YMCA continues to serve the community By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

When every business, except those with essential workers, were asked to shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, YMCAs were no exception. But from March to June, the YMCA of Greensboro offered Emergency Childcare at its Reidsville and Camp Weaver locations for children of essential workers. “Several locations conducted food and blood drives, as well as meal delivery to families in need,” said Marlee Rindal, interim executive director of the Ragsdale Family YMCA in Jamestown. “We also made calls to our senior members to make sure they were okay.” In accordance with state

and local guidance, the Y’s began offering outdoor group exercise classes and reservations for lap swimming in late May. They continued adding options like water fitness classes, outdoor fitness stations, childcare, and most recently, medically prescribed exercise for those who critically need indoor exercise for their wellbeing. “For so many in our community, exercise therapy is a key to recovery, disease management and prevention,” Rindal said. “For more than 130 years, the Y has served as a non-profit leader and partner in community health, delivering evidence-based health programs and interventions that benefit vulnerable populations and those managing the life-altering effects of chronic disease. We believe serving this population is

now more important than ever.” Only 10 participants are allowed in the fitness center at one time. They make reservations for 45 minutes, after which the facility is thoroughly cleaned before the next group comes in. “Everything we have done is with the health and safety of our members and staff as our top priority,” Rindal said. “We have followed all CDC and NCDHHS recommendations. These precautions include physical distancing during classes, wellness checks prior to anyone entering our facility, reservations for our programs, extensive cleaning procedures and more. We are excited to have been able to start welcoming members back in a safe way.” Rindal noted the members of the Y rely on the

organization for their physical wellbeing and also their emotional and mental health. “The Y is really a family, and especially during this stressful time of limited social activity, we understand how important it is to connect with each other,” she said. “We want to be a partner to them. “We’re grateful to the NCDHHS for recognizing this critical need and providing necessary guidelines we can use to provide needed programs safely.” As remote learning begins for schools across the county, a Back to School initiative has been established at the Y for elementary students whose parents must work. Planning Board hears development plans By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

There was no doubt in Kevin Carr’s mind that he wanted to continue the tradition of hosting a cookout for the staff at Haynes-Inman Education Center to celebrate the start of a new school year. As principal of the school, Carr, along with his wife Nora, has hosted these events at his home in Greensboro for school staff see Cookout, page 2

(Left) Kevin Carr, left, principal at Haynes-Inman Education Center, and Romaine Boyd, the new adaptive physical education teacher, teamed up to grill hot dogs and hamburgers for the staff’s annual back-to-school cookout.

The agenda for the Aug. 10 Jamestown Planning Board just indicated a public hearing for a rezoning request for five properties, three along Mackay Road and two along Guilford College Road, totaling approximately 466.6 acres. But what the Board got was a look at the development proposed for those properties – Castleton Village. The request was to rezone the five properties from Agricultural to Planned Unit Development. The site is currently undeveloped but contains thee single-family homes and outbuildings. Town representatives met with the Johnson family about the future of the property as the 2020 Comprehensive Plan was being considered. That talk resulted in the Suburban Residential designation, but it also included a Traditional Neighborhood Development overlay. Traditional Neighborhood means mixed use, or some commercial. The Castleton Village plan, submitted by Diamondback Investment Group of Greensboro, includes some commercial use. Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn, the Council representative to the Planning Board, polled her fellow members for their thoughts on the submitted plan. Council was interested in density, lot size, how they relate to existing ordinances, construction details, layout including buffers, and other items, but mostly see plans, page 6

Herman outlasts Horschel for Wyndham victory By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

Like several other of tournaments this year, the Wyndham Championship was not a runaway. Several golfers were tied at or near the top all four days. However, it started thinning out at the top late in the round and the outcome was not decided until the final hole, when Billy Horschel missed a birdie putt to tie eventual winner Jim Herman, who was 21-under par. Webb Simpson, the highestranked player in the field, was seeking his fourth consecutive top-three finish at the event. He finished tied for third this year as well. Si Woo Kim, the 2016 champion and second- and third-round leader, showed how much he liked Sedgefield Country Club with an ace on the third hole on Saturday, followed by a near-ace on the 12th hole the same day. His ace is the first holein-one since 2017 at the Wyndham Championship and the 30th overall at the tournament since the PGA

Jim Herman celebrates with the trophy on the 18th green after winning during the final round of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. Tour began keeping records. Kim went into the final round with a two-shot lead over Doc Redman and Rob Oppenheim. “This course, just kept hitting the fairway and then that’s more easier like a second shot, that’s the most key here,” the South Korean-born Kim said. “And then greens tough,

but if not miss short-side, not a big trouble. Hopefully, tomorrow a little bit of pressure, but I’m going to keep fighting and hopefully get a win.” He might not like the course as much after Sunday, which was not as favorable to him. He lost a ball on the sixth hole, leading to a

double bogey, dropping him out of the lead. He recovered to finish in a tie for third with Simpson, Redman and Kevin Kisner. Herman started the day four strokes back. He just made the cut Friday at 5-under, but, he battled back on Saturday and Sunday, taking the lead from Horschel late Sunday and the eventual championship. This is Herman’s third PGA Tour win. Herman is a friend of President Trump who helped him out with Q-school prior to becoming president. “I’m very fortunate. I’ve had him in my corner for a long time, one of my biggest fans,” Herman said. “Maybe I’ve got another omen. I played with him a few weeks ago. Whenever I play with him, I usually have some good finishes. [My] last two wins, I had played with him either the week or two weeks before. Maybe three weeks is still within the reach of his, I guess, little bit of good luck for me.

ity, and arts and crafts opportunities. “Because of all the guidelines, it takes more staff to serve less children,” Rindal said. Before school started, the Y held its annual Bright Beginnings program, which served between 175-200 children. “While school looks a little different this year, we know families still need support,” Rindal said. “Instead of our normal inperson shopping trips, we invited people to fill out online Target wish lists for children in need.” Once the Y is back to its full operations, the search for a full-time executive director at the Ragsdale Family YMCA will resume. Kevin Bottomley, executive director at the Ragsdale Y for nine years, left in March to work as an assistant professor at Indiana Tech University. He had worked with the YMCA system for 26 years,

beginning as a lifeguard in 1994. “Until we get a new executive director, we have a team of passionate and experienced executives within the Ragsdale branch and the broader YMCA of Greensboro Association to help guide us,” Rindal said. “During this time, the whole world seems a little different and a little uncertain, however, we believe that with the community’s support, the Y will remain a force for good in our area. As a non-profit, we rely on our incredible members who have continued their memberships and our generous donors. We know the community will need assistance more than ever during and after COVID-19 and we are committed to being a resource. “The Y is accepting new members if we can meet their needs with our current programs.”

cookout

continued from front and their families ever since the school opened in 2010. But with COVID-19 changing the way people could interact, Carr knew this year’s event would look a bit different. “We did a drive-through meal at the school as a teacher appreciation event last year so I saw that as a way to conduct the backto-school cookout,” Carr said. “There are always people willing to jump in and help.” Carr and Romaine Boyd, the new adaptive physical education teacher at H-I, fired up several grills at the school on Aug. 14. They cooked hamburgers and hot dogs and served them with all the fixings, including Carr’s special barbecue sauce.

Carr began the back-toschool cookouts long before he came to Haynes-Inman, suggesting it to others when he was an assistant principal and hosting it as principal. “We have a close community at school,” Carr said. “People don’t eat with people they don’t trust. The cookouts are a way to build trust.” H-I staff and their guests showed up on Friday wearing masks and removed them only to enjoy their meal. In spite of the restrictions, Carr felt the event was quite successful. “It was nice to get to know new staff members and see familiar faces again,” he said. “I like cooking and it is nice that teachers are willing to share their whole family with me. I have watched the children grow over the years.” As the new school year progresses, Carr wants to make sure that the staff finds ways to interact with one another. He is especially glad they will be able to work out of the school building. “We will continue rec-

ognizing staff members at meetings and wearing special staff T-shirts,” he said. “We also have started sharing books with one another – recommending non-fiction and fiction we have read. It is a good way to get communication going.” Physical, and sometimes cognitive, limitations make it more difficult for students at Haynes-Inman to participate in remote learning. They cannot log onto a computer by themselves, requiring help to interact with teachers and staff. This year, however, parents or guardians will be able to arrange the essential therapy sessions that they need by appointment. “We have also been helping parents get care for their kids at home from other organizations,” Carr said. He is looking forward to starting school again, and feels the cookout was a nice way to get the staff back together. The event proved yet again that even activities that look different because of the coronavirus could somehow be the same.

12 Angry Men (1957) — A classic by director Sidney Lumet, “12 Angry Men” centers around the jurors in a murder trial where a young man is accused of murdering his father with a knife. The jurors are hung by one man, Juror No. 8 (Henry Fonda), who forces the others, over the course of the hottest day of the year cramped in a stuffy juror’s room, to debate and review not only the evidence of the case, but also their own prejudices and motivations.

Turn old crayons into new shapes By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun When it comes to the annual back-to-school supply list for young students, crayons are still at the top. It’s no secret that kids love new boxes full of colorful crayons with sharp points, but what about last year’s stash? There’s no reason to throw out those worn-down stubs from school and a summer of coloring and art projects. Instead of tossing them in the trash, collect them in a box and get going with this repurposing activity that turns old crayons into new shapes. You and your kids can make creative “designer” crayons — perfect for fall art activities or favors at your child’s next birthday party. There are numerous techniques I’ve used over the years, including melting crayons in jars and

an hour. To hasten the process, put the tray in the freezer for 10 minutes. Pop newly shaped crayons out of the mold. Try out a new crayon on a piece of paper and you’ll discover that it really works. If you still have extra crayons in the sorted piles, make another batch and enjoy sharing the remade crayons with family and friends.

pouring the liquid into plastic molds. But this year, I’ve landed on a simple, no-mess approach: melt crayon pieces in a silicone mold in the oven. There are different sizes and shapes of molds available to inspire you, such as fall leaves, animals and silly characters. Or, go basic like I did with a standard silicone ice-cube tray, which formed easy-to-handle chunky crayon squares. Here’s the stuff you need: — crayon stubs in your favorite colors — silicone muffin, candy or ice mold available at craft and discount stores and online in seasonal and geometric shapes — baking sheet

continued from front “He’s been very supportive of me.” As usual, rain was a factor as usual for the tournament, with a delay late on Friday and early start times and threesomes on both the front and back nine on Saturday. Preferred lies were used due to wet conditions. But that did not deter low rounds. At the end of the third round, five of the top eight players on the leaderboard either set or tied their career low rounds on the PGA Tour: Oppenheim (T2), Redman (T2), Herman (T5), Mark Hubbard (T5) and Peter Malnati (T7). There seemed to be more cheering at this tournament than previous spectatorfree events this year due to residents with homes lining the course sitting in their back yards to watch the play. Still, local favorites missed their fans. “I just love playing in front of people that you know love you so much,” said Harold Varner III, who is from Gastonia. “It’s unfortunate this year because I enjoy the cheers and stuff, but we’ll get through this year and figure it out. It’s just good to be close to home.” He finished tied for seventh, his best finish at Sedgefield and best finish of the season. With the quarantine and other hardships due to the coronavirus, the charities supported by the Wyndham Championship were even more important this year. A nine-hole exhibition match on Wednesday prior to the tournament earned $160,000 for the First Tee of the Triad. The First Tee of the Triad runs after-school programs throughout the school year and various summer programs for 1,500 students at 18 Piedmont Triad locations New this year for the Birdies for Backpacks Charitable Giveaway, during the third and fourth rounds, Wyndham Rewards donated $500 to the Birdies for Backpacks for every birdie or better made on holes 15, 16 and 17, also known as the tournament’s “Sweet Spot.”

But there was a bigger incentive on hole No. 16. C.T. Pan had a hole-in-one on the par 3 hole on Sunday, earning a $1 million Wyndham Rewards point donation to the charity. “It’s been tough out there for me this weekend, so it’s good to finish with a hole‑in‑one,” Pan said. “I want to thank Wyndham Rewards for doing this charity. Hole-in-one, the chances are pretty slim, so I’m happy to help, and just really grateful for Wyndham Rewards for helping make society better and for helping kids out there.” One out of five children in North Carolina is food insecure and the Birdies Fore Backpacks program works with local organizations to provide backpacks full of nutritious food for children in need when school is not in session.

The good and the bad of the Wyndham They came. They played 36 holes. They went home Friday night. Many of the top golfers in the world – as well as several former champions – were absent over this past weekend at the Wyndham Championship as their scores were above the 3-under cutline. Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose, Brendon Todd, Jim Furyk, Nick Watney, Charl Swartzel, Charles Howell III, and others, along with former champions J.T. Poston, Arjun Atwal, Carl Pettersson and Ryan Moore. Koepka, who has battled knee and back problems this year since the restart of the PGA Tour, mentioned after his 72 in round 1 that his body was nowhere near 100 percent. After his 70 in round 2, his comment was, “I know how to do it, I can do it, I just physically can’t do it.” His 142 for two rounds was five shots over the cut line.

continued from front Council wanted the Planning Board to do it right. “Take the amount of time it takes,” Rayborn said. The most important thing is to be thorough. Ask every question you need to ask. We just want a good product in the end.” “We don’t want to go through the process, get a plan the Planning Board feels is worthy of going to Council, only to have them say it was not what they were thinking,” said Matthew Johnson, planning director. He is not related to the owners of the property in question. Johnson urged citizens to contact Planning Board members with their concerns about the project. The Board had few questions for Johnson but several for Amanda Hodierne, an attorney for Isaacson Sheridan, representing Diamondback, which has the property under contract. She presented the Castleton Village design. Hodierne said there would be 1,517 total units of townhomes and single-family homes with a maximum of 3.25 units per acre. No apartments are included in the design, a response to many who said they did not want the apartments shown in an earlier plan. “We would like to keep open the possibility that one of the townhome pods might be a for-rent model,” Hodierne said. “Just a thought for now, open to discussion.” Approximately 3.5 acres would be devoted to mixed use, located at the Guilford and Guilford College roads intersection. These would include some commercial businesses, with residential space on the second floor. “Mixed use is significantly scaled back from what you saw in February,” Hodierne said. “We heard the feedback – it was too big, too much. [Now] we have a town square type … with two commercial buildings. “We’re looking for some input on this.” The design of the commercial buildings would be fashioned after the Mackay Hunting Lodge that was once in the area. She added that there would be no “big box” or groceries stores in the development. Mixed use is currently planned in the second phase of construction. Amenities include a clubhouse, a junior Olympic

pool, playground and tot lot, bark park, pickleball courts, trails, gazebos and pocket parks. Planning Board members had several questions or suggestions for Hodierne. Russ Walker suggested having a buffer along Mackay Road that would correspond to the planned one along Guilford College Road. Sherrie Richmond, an ETJ board member, noted that the proposed signage is too large. She also hoped the heritage trees could be kept without clear-cutting. Hodierne said they would work with an arborist to identify the heritage trees. Board chair Sarah Glanville was very concerned about how the density would affect the school population. “The schools can’t take any more,” she said, pointing to other developments currently under construction or planned in the local school district. Board member Eddie Oakley had contacted the Guilford County School Board earlier this year and learned that group did not know about either this project or the one at the former Pilot Life campus. Diamondback co-founder Zach Tran addressed the Planning Board to say his company had worked on it, but pointed out that the development would bring in more in the tax rate in Guilford County, of which 50 percent would go to the school system. “But that money doesn’t necessarily go to Jamestown schools,” Glanville said. Suggestions were made to write letters and otherwise contact School Board members about this. Glanville also was concerned about walkability, since Jamestown bills itself as a walking community. She pointed out the danger of crossing Guilford College and Mackay roads to take advantage of the trails at Castleton Village, which would be open to the public. Oakley was concerned about having the sports field located on the busy Guilford College/Mackay corner, but Hodierne pointed out parking would be inside the development and entrances would be away from the corner. A traffic impact analysis is now available at www. jamestown-nc.gov/newsand-notices/town-news.

Glanville mentioned the current downturn in the economy due to Covid-19. She did not want to see unfinished construction at the new development. Richmond suggested moving the townhomes further inside the development and replace with single-family homes. “I think it should compliment Cedarwood,” she said. A positive note came from Planning Board member Ed Stafford. He shared the plan with an architect and city planner and both were impressed with the layout. “It’s similar to Cedarwood,” Stafford said and added he liked using the hunting lodge history. “It’s a really nice touch and connection between this [former] Mackay land and Cedarwood, which was also Mackay land. (A future Jamestown News will feature an article on the Mackay property history.) “Tonight is a night of introduction,” said Johnson. “We’re not asking for a vote. “It’s very early in the process. We ask those in attendance and those watching online to let the Planning Board have time do their job. Opening up the public hearing and letting people come to speak with you at this time is a disservice. The plan is going to change based on your input going forward.” The process typically takes two to three months to complete, with back-andforth changes from both the Planning Board and Town Council. Johnson said the Planning Board and Town Council would act basically as the “designer” of the development and added that he did not expect a vote on the rezoning at the Aug. 10 meeting. Diamondback Investments has requested annexation of the property onto Jamestown. This request will be heard by the Town Council, not the Planning Board, at the Aug. 18 meeting, at which time the Council is expected to ask Town Clerk Katie Weiner to investigate the situation. There was no public comment at the Planning Board meeting and the public hearing was continued to Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. Again, this will be an informational meeting and there will be no public comment until the Sept. 14 Planning Board meeting.
