Council hears code violations update The Jamestown Town Council has held several special meetings recently, jointly with all candidates for Town office as well as with the Planning Board. Another meeting was for visioning. All of these meetings were over two hours long, so it was probably a relief for Council members to hold the Aug. 17 meeting to less than one hour. Brandon Emory of Alliance Code Enforcement updated the Council as to violations he has found in the Town. On his initial drive through the town’s residential and extra-territorial jurisdiction areas in May looking for Nuisance Abatement and Property Maintenance Code violations such as overgrown lots, junk vehicles, junk piles, minimum housing (abandoned, damaged, etc.), animal complaints and abandoned white goods, Emory found 289 code violations. There were also 30 minimum housing violations. Of the remaining 289 code vio-

lations, he has spoken with most property owners and 30 cases have been opened and 22 abated, with eight going to court for settlement. “We received numerous complaints and were able to inspect immediately,” Emory said. “We spoke with numerous property owners in reference to violations and what needed to take place to abate.” “Most people have been nice and responsive,” Emory said. The majority of violations were overgrown lots, junk vehicles and junk piles. Many of the junk vehicles have been removed and property has been cleaned up. Sign violations included 47 that have been picked up. In other business, the Council unanimously approved the Interlocal Agreement with Guilford County regarding funding for the Jamestown Public Library for five years. The library will receive $55,500 from the county for the first fiscal year. The Council also unanimously approved the Interlocal Agreement with Guilford County regarding

the animal shelter and animal control services for three years. Jamestown will provide $12,265 for the 2021-22 fiscal year. This is a renewal of a contract in place since 2011. Continuing the discussion from July regarding non-profit contracting services, the Council agreed to allot $10,500 to the Historic Jamestown Society for a marketing and visitor service campaign, shelving for historic texts, humidity control and monitoring and display cases, all for Mendenhall Homeplace. The Society had requested $14,150 but the Town only budgeted for $10,500 for historic and cultural services. Katherine Stamey Reese was presented a resolution honoring her service as photographer of newly elected town councils for over 10 years as well as being a recent member of the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee. In his manager’s report, Interim Town Manager Dave Treme reported the staff had met with an architect to review construction Photo by Carol Brooks drawings for the Recreation Main- mayor Lynn montgomery, left, presented Katherine stamey tenance Facility. Senior-assisted living home opens in Sedgefield By CaRoL BRooKs FReeLanCe WRiTeR cab1hp@gmail.com The grounds with three sprawling magnolia trees now house a new senior assisted-living facility. “It seems only right to honor the longstanding nature that was home to the property long before we acquired it,” said Dr. Elysa Graham, director of Magnolia Manor at Sedgefield Assisted Living & Senior Care Solutions, located at 3006 W. Sedgefield Dr. “This location was selected because we fell in love with the house. We were new to the area and had no idea about the nearby golf course and since moving, there has been much building and improvement to the area. We are very pleased with the privacy and beauty the location offers.” The grand opening was July 15. Magnolia Manor is a labor of love created by two nurses who happen to be mother and daughter. It is cottage-style micro-assisted living created to care for those who are aging and are no longer able to be cared for at home. Up to five residents can live in a home-away-from-home environment with a family-style atmosphere. There is 24/7 on-site medical staff see Home, PaGe 2

Staff members of the new Adult Day & Respite Care Center on the edge of Jamestown have been busily working to prepare the facility for clients’ arrival at the beginning of October. To call the care center new, however, is somewhat of a misnomer. For 26 years, the care center was located on Groometown Road in Greensboro, but it had steadily outgrown that site. Staff used time during the pandemic shutdown to seek a new place for their business and the former bank building at the corner of Hilltop and Guilford College roads proved a good fit for their needs. Not only is the building larger, but there is also room for

GOLF CLASSIC APPROACHING QUICKLY The Bow Stafford Memorial Golf Classic, sponsored by the Jamestown Rotary Club, is scheduled for Sept. 10 at Jamestown Park Golf Course. Members of the Jamestown Rotary Club are working on the final arrangements, hoping to make this the most successful tournament they have had thus far. “The community is really stepping up and supporting us with sponsorships and teams,” said Tournament Chairman Jerry Brett. “Although the event is quickly filling up with teams, we are still looking for additional teams, as well as sponsors if anyone has an interest in playing or helping us financially. “Proceeds from the tournament go to Feeding Lisa’s Kids, a very worthwhile local non-profit.” Anyone interested in participating may contact Brett at jerrybrett1976@gmail. com or go to the Jamestown Rotary website at www.jamestownrotaryclub.com.

the business to grow. The Adult Day & Respite Care Center serves individuals 18 and older that have developmental disabilities or mental challenges, including dementia and Alzheimer’s. Chandra Cagle has been the care center’s director since 2016. Cagle’s mother, Joanne, started the center in 1995 at the encouragement of her pastor. “He approached my mother and wanted to meet with her to share his vision of the adult care center,” Cagle said. “After talking to the pastor, she felt led to run the program.” Joanne, who had a master’s in social work, began tackling all that was mandated by the state to make the original vision Photo by Norma B. Comp Plan draft available By CaRoL BRooKs FReeLanCe WRiTeR cab1hp@gmail.com

Jamestown’s Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will get a look at a working draft of the updated plan when it meets Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The committee began working on the update with Benchmark Planning in 2019. Meetings included listening sessions with the community, community surveys, business roundtable discussions, downtown walking tours for the community, visioning and growth management workshops. The future of a municipality is guided by a comprehensive plan. It provides direction about development decisions, often protecting valuable resources, shaping the appearance of the community and promoting economic development. A draft of the 91-page updated Comprehensive Plan is available on the Town’s website, www.jamestown-nc.gov. The public is invited to review the draft and attend the meeting. The public will have an opportunity to review the plan thru October. The meeting will not be streamed but will be available later at www.youtube. com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

ConTinUed FRom FRonT trained in CPR offering assistance with daily living activities. Support staff includes nursing assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, drivers, cook, functional movement specialists, physical therapists, psychologists, counselors, yoga instructor and an activities director. “Micro-assisted living is a term we use to separate us from the large commercial assisted-living locations in the minds of consumers,” Graham said. “We are technically a family care home overseen by the state of North Carolina, designed to provide a home-like environment for aging seniors who can no longer live at home without assistance. It is the same care one would receive at a large local assisted living but in a small intimate setting.” Some senior-living services offered include mental awareness stimulation, exercise, assistance with weekly shopping and

errands, laundry and house cleaning, bathing, dressing, and perhaps most of all, companionship and conversation with residents. Residents can keep their personal physician or a geriatric specialist can be arranged. A registered dietitian will create meals for each resident. There are daily activities, weekly outings and monthly cultural events. The home is just inside Sedgefield’s entrance off High Point Road, across from the old Pilot Life Insurance property, which is currently under development. Improvements included major landscaping overhaul, the addition of a hallway that leads outside for remote exit safety, ADA compliant bathrooms and exits with handrails, grab bars, comfort toilet height, and a tucked away nurses station. Basically, however, it looks and feels exactly like a standard single-family home.

Four bedrooms – two large, two small – all with televisions and private bathrooms that can accommodate singles, couples or double occupancy. Dr. Graham moved to the area in 2017 after 13 years of active duty as an army nurse and as a civilian registered nurse and nurse practitioner. Her master’s and doctoral degrees focus on geriatrics. She has completed and still pursues specialty courses in family practice, cardiology, diabetes, business and health education. Cynthia Ann Kerr, Graham’s mother, is also a registered nurse and veteran. A nurse for over 40 years, she specializes in mental health, home health, wound care and care of soldiers and veterans. “Caring is a calling, more than a thing we do or a particular action we take,” Graham said. “Caring is a way of life. “Magnolia Manor at

mother while she was still in college at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She assisted with grant writing and some annual bookkeeping responsibilities during school breaks and vacations. “My mother wanted me to learn all aspects of the business,” Cagle said. “After college I went into banking and then worked with non-profit community service. When my mother passed away in 2016, the board pressed me to name a new director. I had the experience and education so agreed to serve as interim while they looked for someone. “They have not found anyone yet and I don’t think they are looking any more,” Cagle added with a smile. The current staff of six includes a certified nursing assistant who can provide clients with their prescribed medications and a mental health professional. The care center is open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Two

van services – SCAT from the city of Greensboro and Big Wheel from the county – are available to transport clients to and from the facility. The morning begins with coffee and conversation and group exercise. Participants then break into groups according to their interests, for example arts and crafts or gardening, and therapies that are needed. Participants also enjoy trips and guests who come to talk or entertain. Following lunch, which participants bring from home, there is time to relax before ending the day with group activities. “Each month has a different theme,” Cagle explained. The care center is funded by the state for many of the services. Those who do not qualify for state funds may participate in a private pay plan. Once registered, they join the group from 10 a.m.3 p.m. The facility also offers a caregiver support group that meets after the clients

leave for the day. Tiffany McBride, habilitation technician, also leads that group. It will meet weekly or monthly depending on need. Staff members are planning an open house for clients and their families on Sept. 18. There will be tours of the facility starting about 5 p.m., a movie shown outside and a bounce house for children. “We are truly partners with the families and are caregiver supported,” Cagle said. With room to expand, Cagle hopes to make that a 3-5 year goal. “We plan to be here another 26 years,” she said smiling. “We are preparing for nothing but success. We want to come in with fresh wind and a newness of life for our community.” Adult Day and Respite Care Center is located at 5605 Hilltop Road, Jamestown. Val — You don't have to be a huge Val Kilmer fan to enjoy this self-produced documentary on the actor's life. In fact, it might even be better if you're not entirely familiar with his library of work. Ever since his teen years, Kilmer has filmed both his personal and professional lives, starting with amateur productions made with his two brothers. This current doc-

umentary features old selfie-type commentary, on-set joking with co-stars, screen tests and even conversations with his mom. After chronicling his training at Juilliard, his debut on the New York City stage and his rise to Hollywood stardom, it delves much deeper into his spiritual beliefs and some truly touching personal family stories. After losing his voice due to throat cancer, Val enlisted his son, Jack, to narrate the film in the voice of his father. Self-described as "a sensitive, intelligent being with the soul of a clown," Val is introspective, playful, humble and unapologetic. (Amazon Prime Video) ©2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Serve the easiest-ever Labor Day feast By patti diamond divas on a dime I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Labor Day is supposed to be a day off for those who labor. Traditionally, we’d plan a big barbeque feast with all the trimmings. Now, I’m certainly not opposed to such things, but in the spirit of Labor Day, I’m proposing we go against tradition and prepare a meal that practically makes itself. It’s time to pull out the easiest pulled pork recipe

known to mankind. Requiring only four ingredients, all you need is a big ol’ pork roast, a bottle of root beer (stick with me here, your pork won’t taste like root beer, I promise), salt and your favorite barbeque sauce. See? Four ingredients. Easy. What cut of pork? For tender, juicy pulled pork, buy the cheap stuff. Choose cuts labeled “shoulder,” “butt” or “Boston butt.” Notwithstanding the name, the butt portion comes from the animal’s shoulder. The name is

from Colonial New England and the way the shoulder cuts were shipped back then. The barrels used for shipping were called “butts,” hence the name “pork butts.” Why root beer? Science! Root beer with salt added acts like a brine and marinade combined. The salt and sugar are absorbed deep into the meat, seasoning it, like a brine. The flavors in root beer — sassafras, nutmeg, anise, molasses, cinnamon, licorice and honey — complement the pork beautifully, acting like a marinade. Root

beer adds a subtle sweetness and complexity that partners with BBQ sauce to make this pork melt-in-yourmouth scrumptious. When buying root beer, it must contain sugar, not artificial sweeteners. This is the time to buy a high-end root beer, but if that stretches your budget, purchase one you can comfortably afford. ROOT BEER PULLED PORK Yield: 8-12 servings Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 8-10 hours What You’ll Need: 1 (6 to 8 pound) pork shoulder roast 1 (12 ounce) bottle of root beer 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 1/2 cups BBQ sauce (bottled or homemade), divided, plus more for serving

Root beer is the secret to this melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork.

Here’s How: 1. In the crock of your slow cooker, mix the root beer with the salt (but grab the kiddies first to watch it fizz up). Add 1 cup BBQ sauce, and stir to combine. 2. Place the pork into the crock (if necessary, cut into chunks to fit in your slow cooker), tossing to coat with sauce; cover and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours. While it’s safe to eat at a temperature of 165 F, you want the pork to reach 205 F degrees to be falling-apart tender. 3. Remove pork to a cut-

ting board. Reserve 2 cups juices from the crock and discard the rest. Shred the pork with two forks, removing any unwanted fatty bits, and return it to the crock pot. Add 1/2 cup BBQ sauce and 1 cup juices, tossing to coat. Add more juice if needed. Keep warm in the crockpot until ready to serve. (Oven Directions — Preheat oven to 325 F and follow directions above, placing pork in a Dutch oven. Bake with the lid on for 3 hours, then remove lid for 1 to 2 more hours or until the pork reaches 205 F.) Serve a generous portion of pulled pork on a toasted bun with additional BBQ sauce on the side. Hawaiian style rolls are ridiculously good with this. Accompany

with coleslaw, corn on the cob and pickles for a perfect salute to end-of-summer cuisine. As the lazy days wind down, I hope the holiday weekend finds your backside firmly planted in the shade and your hardest decision being should the coleslaw be on the bun or on the side. Happy Labor Day, my friends.
