Hodgin celebrates 99th birthday with traditional party By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com When Quentin Hodgin, better known in the community as Wimpy, turned 90 years old he asked his daughters to give him a party. “Usually our family celebrated his birthday by going out to dinner with a few friends and having cake,” said his older daughter Carolyn Howard. “But that year he wanted a big party.” His family, which also includes daughter Barbara Smith, four grand-

Council approves bids for Lydia sidewalk By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The East Main Street (Lydia) sidewalk project was once again on the Jamestown Town Council’s agenda for its Aug. 20 meeting but this time things look promising. Public Services Director Paul Blanchard had opened bids three times for the project, but only received one bid each time – all from Atlantic Contracting Company, Inc. The bids were above the budgeted amount by $665,965 but the Town has now received additional funding from North Carolina Department of Transportation. Therefore, the Council unanimously awarded the contract to Atlantic Contracting in the amount of $1,434,422.50. A supplemental agreement from NCDOT has provided funding for $1,515,996 and includes the base bid, a 10 percent contingency and 15 percent for project management. The Council also unanimously approved that agreement. “I would like to thank DOT for additional funding,” said Councilmember Martha Wolfe. “I think this is a very important project and we see sidewalk, page 2

Council denies pig amendment By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Lori Herron says her 10 potbellied pigs that live with her are emotional support animals. The Jamestown Town Council says they are livestock and must go. Herron pleaded her case to the Jamestown Planning Board on July 8, asking for a text amendment to the town’s Land Development Ordinance to allow her to keep her pigs. The Planning Board unanimously denied her request and sent it to the Town Council, which passed its own unanimous decision on Aug. 20. Article 3, Definitions, of the LDO currently defines “limited agriculture” as “the keeping of gardens and animals for noncommercial domestic use. Such agriculture generally refers to, but is not limited to, domestic fowl such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, bees, and other small animals (ex: rabbits). Limited agriculture does not permit livestock such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine or the like.” Herron claims her pot-belly pigs are pets and therapy animals, not livestock. She asked to amend the text to read, “Limited agriculture does not permit livestock, animals used for food or fiber, such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine over

is difficult to define the word “pet.” He added that, if amended, the ordinance would apply to approximately 60 percent of the town in several zoning districts and allow for an unlimited number of the animals. He had requested the Council direct his department do more research and suggest an ordinance update which would better define the requirements for keeping “miniature” or “pot-bellied” pigs in residentially-zoned areas, as well as guidelines for limitations

A small red, white and blue sampler that reads “Home Sweet Home” hangs on the wall of a newly renovated cottage at the Heroes Center Veterans Support Camp in High Point. Its location on the wall opposite the front door catches the eye of those who enter, but it also makes a powerful statement to Billy Riley, the cottage’s new occupant. It serves as a reminder of what the future holds and distinguishes the building as more than a place to lay one’s head, but rather as a residence to which one can identify. “I hope it is a place for peace and quite,” Riley said with a laugh. The tiny three-room cottage, consisting of a living room and two bedrooms – each with its own bathroom – could accommodate two veterans. There is no kitchen, but Riley says the microwave, coffee maker and an outdoor grill will be adequate for his needs.
on the keeping of other animals (cats, dogs, exotic pets, etc.), including numbers and conditions for each. The Council did not act on this request. Herron was given 30 days to appeal the decision and after the meeting, Herron said she is planning to appeal. Four people, including Herron and her husband, spoke in favor of the amendment. Only two people spoke up against it. see pig, page 2

A really racy Quaker BY LINDA WILLARD JaMeStOwN frieNDS MeetiNg James “Jimmie” Edward Lewallen, the son of Roy J. Lewallen and Ella Mae Willard Lewallen, was born in High Point, North Carolina on August 22, 1919. On September 13, 1946, Lewallen married Carrie Ellen James. Lewallen and his wife were the parents of one daughter and two sons. Lewallen got his start in racing in 1934 racing motorcycles. Later in the 1930s, Lewallen switched to racing cars. This made his “sideline” job of running moonshine a bit easier! Lewallen raced at a one-mile dirt track in north High Point, North Carolina until he entered the military in 1941. During World War II, Lewallen served in the European Theater Operations until
1945. He was involved in the Battle of Normandy, wounded twice and received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal & Bronze Star Attachment (Triple), World War II Victory Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II, and several Battlefield Commissions. Lewallen was wounded twice. Lewallen competed in the first NASCAR Strictly Stock/Grand National divi-

would later drive a second car for Petty Enterprises at the West Palm Beach Speedway. Lewallen raced for various owners and in various cars throughout his career. In 1975, Lewallen founded the “Old Timer Racing Club.” On October 12, 1946, Lewallen attended the meeting in Atlanta, Georgia with Bill France that formed NASCAR. France offered Lewallen a change to “buy into NASCAR” for $500.00. Lewallen turned down the offer saying that “it would never amount to anything.” Lewallen died from cancer on October 16, 1995 and is buried in the cemetery at Springfield Friends Meeting in High Point, North Carolina. Lewallen a member of Springfield Friends Meeting.
Following the Council vote, Councilmember Martha Wolfe looked at Herron and said, “Sorry, Mrs. Herron.” Other council members also expressed sympathy. The matter began when the town’s Planning Department received an anonymous phone call on Feb. 26 of this year complaining of “trash and odors” coming from Herron’s residence. Johnson investigated and found a large pile of plumbing rubbish in the yard. When he attempted to go to the front door to speak with the owner, his access was blocked by a fence enclosing 10 pigs. Johnson called to request a meeting, which was set up and then canceled. Johnson then sent a notice on Feb. 27 outlining several violations and requesting the rubbish be removed within 10 days and the pigs within 30 days. The plumbing trash was removed but Herron requested an additional 60 days to find a new home for the pigs, thus moving the date of compliance to May 27. Herron attended the Town Council meeting May 21 and asked to be allowed to keep the pigs on her property. She said she had been told in the past by the Town that the pigs were not a problem and the family even checked with the Planning Department when they moved to Jamestown in 2000. They had become members of her family and she presented a letter from her doctor saying they were emotional support animals.

Among the decorations was a long table filled with mementos of Hodgin’s life and lots of pictures, including one of him and his late wife Mae. Hodgin enjoyed his special party so much that the next year he wanted to do it all over again. The tradition continued and on Aug. 24 he celebrated his 99th birthday in style with a “big” party in his honor and pens for everyone. The memento table now includes albums filled with pictures of former party guests. “My favorite part of the birthday parties
is seeing so many old friends and recalling memories from the past,” Hodgin said. As the years have passed, he now sits down to greet his guests, but his smile for each is just as broad. “This is almost like standing in line to see Santa,” said his niece Joy Hodgin Watkins, as guests waited patiently in line to greet Hodgin and wish him well. “Daddy is such a people-person,” Howard said. “To be around family and friends is what he loves. And if the good Lord is willing, we will have another party next year.”

The existing sidewall will be extended to near 411 E. Main St. where the Town will install a crosswalk so the new sidewalk can connect with the abandoned railroad underpass in a safe manner. Originally scheduled to be completed by Sept. 23, 2018, the new completion date is July 15, 2022. This delay has been caused, in part, by scarcity of bids and consideration of funding sources. Town Manager Kenny Cole said work should begin soon as should work on the East Fork Road pedestrian bridge.

throwing America under the bus BY RICh LOWRY Beto O’Rourke has taken the measure of America and found it wanting. “This country, though we would like to think otherwise,” he intoned, “was founded on racism, has persisted through racism and is racist today.” This is now a mainstream sentiment in the Democratic Party. Bernie Sanders said earlier this year that the United States was “created” in large part “on racist principles.” The New York Times has begun the so-called 1619 Project, marking the 400th anniversary of the importation of slaves from Africa. The series seeks nothing less than “to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.” It is certainly true that an American nation existed prior to the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and slavery was its great sin, with permutations still felt today. But to pretend that racism is the essence of America and constituted one of the country’s founding principles is an odious and reductive lie. It doesn’t explain why any reference to slavery was kept out of the Constitution. James Madison, per his notes during the drafting convention, “thought it wrong to admit in the Constitution the idea that there could be property in men.” The careful avoidance of the term was subsequently used to buttress the position of opponents of slavery from John Quincy Adams to Abraham Lincoln to Frederick Douglass. The great black abolitionist asked, “if the Constitution were intended to be, by its framers and adopters, a slave-holding instrument, why neither slavery, slavehold-
ing, nor slave can anywhere be found in it?” Of course, in crucial respects the Constitution was indeed a compromise with slaveholders. It’s not clear why it would be considered better if, in the absence of such a compromise, slave states had possibly gone their own way to create a rump nation-state wholly devoted to slavery and not yoked to a North that became more anti-slavery over time. “The Revolution suddenly and effectively ended the cultural climate that had allowed black slavery, as well as other forms of bondage and unfreedom, to exist throughout the colonial period without serious challenge,” the historian Gordon Wood writes. In his view, it set in motion the “ideological and social forces” that eventually led to the Civil War. In the broadest gauge, it’s a mistake to treat the United States as an outlier in terms of its racial attitudes, when it was really an outlier in its (imperfect) embrace of liberty. “Europeans did not outdo others in enslaving people or treating slaves viciously,” the late historians Elizabeth FoxGenovese and Eugene Genovese observed. “They outdid others by creating a Christian civilization that eventually stirred moral condemnation of slavery and roused mass movements against it. “Today we ask: How could Christians or any civilized people have lived with themselves as slaveholders? But the historically appropriate question is: What, after millennia of general acceptance, made Christians — and, subsequently, those of other faiths — judge slavery an enormity not to be endured?” It’s not a question anyone running in the Democratic presidential primaries, or editing The New York Times, is inclined to ask. Are you (and your pets) ready to bug out? BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S cOrNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What can I do to protect my dog and two cats if an asteroid strikes the Earth? — Curious in Fresno, California DEAR CURIOUS: To be honest, I haven’t done a lot of research into asteroid strikes. NASA, however, is putting a lot of resources toward studying this particular type of astronomical object. A more likely scenario affecting you and your pets is a natural disaster that has an earthly or man-made cause. Hurricanes, windstorms, forest fires, floods, earthquakes, house fires — you name it. What can you do to protect your pets against these things? It’s difficult to prepare for all scenarios. But you can be ready for the most likely disasters in your area. Fans of disaster preparedness recommend having a “bug-out bag.” This is a container or a pack that holds key
documents, medications, food, water and other supplies that can be grabbed and carried easily if you need to evacuate your home in a hurry. Prepare a similar bag for your pets — with enough food for each of them for 1 to 3 days, any medicines they take regularly and copies of their shot records, licenses and tags. Include your contact information and the vet’s info on a collar tag. Consider microchipping your pets, too: If they’re separated from you and lose their collar, a vet or rescue agency can find out who they belong to by scanning for the chip. Have an evacuation plan that includes getting pets into their carriers quickly. Make sure their supplies can be grabbed and packed up. Once those preparations are in place, you can breathe easier and spend more time enjoying your pets, and less time worrying about the future.
