The Wyndham Championship Returns By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com It’s here! The Wyndham Championship has returned this week to Sedgefield Country Club for the 14th year. This week’s field includes former champions, major championship winners, Olympians, world-ranked players and a large contingent from the University of Georgia. Leading the field is defending champion Kevin Kisner, who won a dramatic six-man playoff in 2021 to take home the Sam Snead Cup. This was only the third six-man playoff in PGA Tour history. Kisner beat Roger Sloan, Adam Scott, Branden Grace, 2016 Wyndham champion Si Woo Kim and Kevin Na on the second sudden-death hole. Three challengers from the 2016 Summer Olympic are in the field

this week, 2016 gold-medalist Justin Rose, 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett, and Rafa Cabrera Bello. The field also includes former World No. 1 and major championship winners Adam Scott and Jason Day. Francesco Molinari, who won the 2018 Open Championship, has also indicated he will play. Former Wyndham Championship victors in the field are Davis Love III (2015, 2006, 1992), J.T. Poston (2019), Webb Simpson (2011) and Brandt Snedeker (2018, 2007), Ryan Moore (2009), Camilo Villegas (2014), Si Woo Kim (2016) and Jim Herman (2020). Rising star Will Zalatoris, who played at Wake Forest, committed last week as did Rickie Fowler and Jason Dufner. Zalatoris is familiar with Sedgefield, having played in the AJGA Wyndham Invitational in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Local fan favorite Harold Var-

It did not take much to encourage Don Routh to ride in the Bike MS Tour to Tanglewood in 2006. He knew several people who had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, including his best friend. On Sept. 24-25, the 76-year-old will participate in his 17th ride in honor/memory of 14 friends and acquaintances. Two of the people Routh rides for are in his church and one is a classmate from the 1964 graduating class of Ragsdale High School. “People with MS need us now more than ever,” Routh said. “I want to do everything I can to prevent more people from learning what it means to live with this disease.” Routh was impressed with the

cONtiNUeD frOM frONt Lee Tillery, High Point Parks and Recreation director, last year. “The pool liner and maintenance system are old.” Other aspects of the overall park project are replacement of the pontoon boat, which is used for tours of the lake and replacement of the playground. Nearing completion is a pedestrian bridge beside Penny Road across the Arnold Koonce City Lake. It will connect the park with the Piedmont Environmental Center and both the High Point and Bicentennial greenways. A trail from the bridge to the park must be

constructed before the bridge can open. September is the target date. The original completion date was Memorial Day of this year. This marks the third summer the pool has been closed, the first two years as a result of Covid-19. The park is located in High Point but actually has a Jamestown address on West Main Street. The city purchased land along both sides of West Fork Road, presumably Penny Road, and what is now East Fork Road, in the 1920s to create a city water supply reservoir. The park was constructed in 1934-35, the first major city park in

the state. The pool was the largest in the Southeast. The park offered the opportunity for work for the unemployed during the Depression. The Civil Works Administration (CWA), and later the Works Progress Administration (WPA), were part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal plan to provide work to idle laborers. More than $300,000 federal funds were given to construct the park and it was completed by CWA workers. Other park amenities, like shelters, fishing, marina and playground with rides remain open.

His doctor advised him to forget running and get a bicycle. Taking spin classes at his local Y also inspired him to bike and it was through the Y that he first learned about the Bike MS events. “I borrowed a bike for my

first Bike MS ride,” Routh said. “I had one but it did not have many gears. Since then, I have had all kinds of bikes.” Routh originally rode with Team Routh, which included his uncle. Today he rides with a 25-member team MSBS Bespoke Cyclery, which includes four or more participants with MS. Bike MS is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world with 68 rides across the United States. Nearly 75,000 cyclists and more than 6,000 teams ride together each year in hopes of changing the world for people living with MS. All rides are well organized and supportive while maintaining a unique local flavor. The Bike MS Tour to Tanglewood is one of the largest rides in North Carolina, drawing as many as 1,000 cyclists from across the state, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee. It showcases miles of outdoor trails along the Yadkin River at Tanglewood Park, highlighting the rolling hills of Pilot Mountain, one of the most distinctive natural features in North Carolina. New Bern is another popular MS ride in North Carolina because the routes are flat, without the added challenge of hills. Some riders participate in more than one ride, but Routh has stuck with the Bike MS Tour to Tanglewood. “I used to ride 100 miles during the two-day event,” he said. “Before I retired as a Methodist minister, I would only participate in the actual ride on Saturday, but I would ride on Thursday to get my extra 50 miles in. Now I am riding 25 miles each day.” Every route is patrolled to help riders cross intersections safely, mechanical and medical assistance is provided if needed and frequent rest stops complete with food and drinks keep the riders fueled. Anyone over 12 years of age may participate, which

leaves the event open to a mix of riders with different experiences and skills. “This is something I look forward to each year,” Routh said. “I love riding in rural areas and used to ride about 100 miles a week. Since I am older my training is not as intense. The Y has a quarter-mile route that I often use. I don’t want to be hit at my age.” Routh says he has been hit once while on the open road. In 2008, he was training with a friend for a ride across Iowa called Ragbrai (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa). It is not an MS event but one of the biggest bike rides in the world, gathering as many as 18,000 riders to promote the state and tourism. A man on a moped hit Routh and his friend as they were preparing for that ride. They were not seriously injured, although Routh needed two shots of cortisone and ibuprofen to make it through the Iowa ride. “The terrain there is a lot different from North Carolina,” Routh acknowledged. “There is just one corn field after another.” Routh’s goal for the 2022 MS bike ride is $3,000. He has raised more than $2,600 and hopes by time for the ride he will exceed his goal. “I usually start with a goal of $2,500 and when I reach that goal I move it up,” Routh said. “I have been in the top 100 individual fundraisers for 14 of the years I have ridden.” The goal for Bike MS rides this year is $785,000, but the ultimate goal is to end MS forever. To support Routh with his ride, help those who have MS and hopefully eradicate the disease, write a check to the MS Society and mail it to Don Routh at 167 Hemlock Street, Mocksville, NC 27028. You may donate online by going to the Bike MS Tour to Tanglewood 2022 — National Society, scroll down to the list of participants, click on Routh’s name and then click the orange donate button.

Faldo to retire after Wyndham By CARol BRookS freelaNce writer cab1hp@gmail.com Some people have been coming to the Wyndham Championship since it began in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open (GGO). Englishman Nick Faldo made his PGA Tour debut as a player in Greensboro in 1979 when the tournament was held at Forest Oakes Country Club. That year he tied for 44th and took home $737.86. In nine starts, Faldo’s best finish was third in 1981, pocketing $20,400. In all, he earned $64,178.86 at the GGO. Throughout his career, he won six major titles including the Masters and Open championships three times each. Faldo has spent the last 16 years in the broadcast booth after he retired from playing. This year’s Wyndham Championship will be his last with the tournament and with broadcasting in general. He announced his retirement in June. “The great run includes the fact that I have been on the road since I was 18 years old and am about to be 65 years old this July,” Faldo said in a statement. “That’s a long run of airports, hotel rooms and restaurant meals. “As a person who can appreciate the full circles that life can present, my mind goes back to the very first event I competed in on the PGA Tour in 1979, which was the GGO in Greensboro, N.C. Moving forward to now, I have come to the time that I am announcing my retirement from full-time broadcasting for CBS and the Golf Channel. “As fate would have it, that will be on Aug. 7, 2022, at the end of the GGO, now named The Wyndham Champion-

nick Faldo ship in Greensboro where it all began for me in the U.S. all those years ago.” The Wyndham Championship tweeted, “We’re honored to have been your first PGA Tour tournament and your last stop, Nick Faldo. We’ll miss seeing you.” Faldo and his wife will move to Montana to work on developing other businesses and partnerships, including those with Black Bull Scotch Whisky, the Faldo Design business and the Faldo Series. Sir Nick Faldo was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2009 for his services to golf. He is the only British golfer in the modern era to receive such an honor. He received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, better known as the MBE, in 1988. Trevor Immelman is expected to replace Faldo as lead analyst in the broadcast booth alongside Jim Nantz. So, the Wyndham Championship will say “goodbye” to Nick Faldo on Aug. 7, having welcomed him to Greensboro many years, first as a player and last as an analyst.

off Core and Shackleford Banks until the storms of 1896 and 1899 ravaged their homesteads and drove them to higher, safer ground.” Many floated “what was left of their houses and belongings across Back Sound to nearby Harkers Island, where they bought land for a dollar an acre.” The descendants of these settlers have long ago passed away but, according to the authors, “the story of the exodus from Shackleford Banks is told with great reverence by islanders, underscoring a deep and abiding attachment to place.” Among its more than 300 pages of recipes and memories, “Island Born and Bred” a short note written by Susanne Yeomans Guthrie explains this attachment. “No tradition is more precious to a native Harkers Islander then the privilege of returning to Shackleford Banks. For it is through this ritual that island people ‘go home.’ In fact, the desire is almost an actual need-often undiagnosed by the individual but quenched only by going and ‘feeling’ the Banks under your bare feet.” To help preserve these memories and share them with a wider group, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center, led by Amspacher, has reopened after the repair of extensive damage during Hurricane Florence. It is located on Harkers Island at 1800 Island Road and adjoins the National Park Service’s Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center.

With three floors of exhibits and experiences, the museum gives visitors a rich experience and real connection to the history of Harkers Island and other nearby Down East communities. “Island Born and Bred” and “Living at the Water’s Edge” are available at the museum’s store and online at https://shopcoresound.com/collections/books

DIY breakfast kits save money, time and sanity By PAtti diAMond DiVaS ON a DiMe

What? Didn’t summer just start? I just realized school is already starting in communities across the country. Before you think I’m a goofball, my kids are adults, so I’m blissfully detached from the school year schedule. But I’m not detached from morning chaos. We all have that in common. The only way to mitigate the morning madness is to organize the chaos. Here’s one trick I’ve found: If we make self-serve breakfasts, it frees us up to drink more coffee and search for matching socks. So, let’s make a freezer full of homemade breakfast scrambled egg kits. You know, the kind you “just crack an egg” into. Wink, wink. Have you seen those scrambled eggs kits? Microwavable cups holding diced potatoes, sausage or bacon with veggies and cheese, ready to stir and microwave. I love everything but the price. So I make them myself. To compare prices, these ready-made kits sell for around $3 each and contain about 3 ounces of ingredients, and you supply the eggs. I made a bunch of kits in a variety of recipe combinations. Mine weighed between 4 and 6 ounces and cost an average of 75 cents, includ-
