Wyndham is almost here It will almost feel like business – or golf – as usual this year at the Wyndham Championship. There are a few differences, however. Fans will be welcomed back to the course this year, after not being allowed at last year’s tournament due to Covid-19. There is a daily limit, however, of 15,000 spectators. “The course is in great shape,” said Mark Brazil, who is celebrating his 20th year as tournament director of the Wyndham Championship. Fans wanting to attend must purchase a digital ticket in advance. No tickets will be sold on site or available at Will Call. Your phone
is your ticket and entry to the tournament grounds will be contactless, which will help everyone move through the gate more quickly. Do not print out your ticket and screenshots are not valid. To purchase your tickets, visit wyndhamchampionship.com/spectators/tickets. Brazil noted those persons with a Harris-Teeter VIC card can receive a 25 percent discount on tickets purchased at their stores. Free admission is offered to youth 15 and under, Piedmont Triad teachers, first responders, military and veterans. A current identification card is required to receive a complimentary admission wristband for themselves and a guest. Members of the military (active duty, reservists and veterans) may receive up to

Even Covid-19 protocols couldn’t stop avid golfers. Figures reflecting amount of play and revenue/expenses for Jamestown Park and Golf Course for both the month of June and fiscal year 2020-2021 look good, even though the park was closed for six weeks in 2020 due to the pandemic. “Rounds of play continue to be impressive,” said Finance Director Judy Gallman at the July 20 Town Council meeting. “For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021, there have been 31,368 rounds played. For this same time period in 2020, there were 22,072 played. The course saw 3,392 rounds played in June 2021 compared to 3,280 in 2020. There was one more bad weather day this year and the course was closed one day for aeration. Total revenues for June 2021 were $120,947 and operating expenditures were $123,453, indicating a net operating loss of $2,506 for the month. “In June 2020, there was an operating gain of $11.313,” Gallman noted. “There seems to have been a lot more spent on supplies in both the golf maintenance area and the golf shop in June 2021.” Greens fees this year were up 12.5 percent in

A Moment in Time meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of each month from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Jamestown United Methodist Church. Each one revolves around a theme and is filled with fun activities such as arts and crafts, music from days past, games and conversation, which can be enjoyed together by those facing memory challenges and their caregivers. Individuals with any stage of dementia along with their caregivers are welcome. Caregivers can be anyone, including a spouse, child, grandchild, sibling, friend or paid support person. Originally formed in 2019 as the Memory Café, the group met on the Oakdale campus of Jamestown United Methodist Church. Closed for over a year due to Covid-19, meetings will resume Aug. 17 with the new name and new site. “We wanted to emphasize and celebrate getting the most out of the moment we are in,” Laura Gulledge, chair of the A Moment in Time committee, said about the name change. “Our meetings are a break from doc-

The meeting will provide an opportunity for each group to work with the other and review some of the changes resulting from the new planning laws in N.C. General Statutes Chapter 160D. They will also learn tips for effective meetings and other topics pertinent to both groups. The public is invited to attend.

Total rounds for 20202021 were 31,400 compared to total rounds of 26,500 in 2018-2019 and 22,072 in 2019-2020. Total revenue was up for the year was up by approximately 35 percent. For the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, the total number of paid rounds played in 2021 were 10,169 compared to 9,400 in 2019. Total green fee revenues were up approximately 17 percent compared to the same quarter in 2019. Total cart and range revenue was up approximately 28 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Or the sweetest when it describes a politician’s response to a perceived wrong. In 1984, after two terms as governor, Jim Hunt was running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Jesse Helms. A host of ambitious Democrats lined up to succeed him. Competitors in the gubernatorial primary that year included Lieutenant Governor Jimmy Green, Insurance Commissioner John Ingram, Hunt’s Secretary of Commerce Lauch Faircloth, Hunt’s Deputy Secretary of Human Resources Tom Gilmore, Attorney General Rufus Edmisten, and former Charlotte Mayor Eddie Knox. Even though Hunt was consumed with his own campaign, all these candidates for governor, especially those

campaign for student body president. Their alliance continued as both mounted successful political careers. including Hunt’s statewide campaigns for lieutenant governor and governor. Knox was a close second to Edmisten in the primary. As the two lined up to compete in a run-off and with Hunt’s other closest political allies no longer in competition, Knox hoped Hunt would give him the much-needed help he would have to have to beat Edmisten. It did not come, and Knox lost by almost four percentage points. Knox seethed. A few weeks later, appearing with Senator Helms, Knox let it be known that he had changed his loyalties. He would be supporting Helms rather than Hunt in the upcoming election. Hunt lost by four percentage points. skills to work for his clients. In that 1984 primary, Lauch Faircloth came in a respectable third place, leading him to consider running for the U.S. Senate in 1986. The seat was “open” in the sense that the incumbent John East was ill and later died. But there was no rush of prominent Democrats to contend for the seat. Former governor and Duke University President Terry Sanford had considered running, but dropped out in September 1985 when party leaders were not encouraging, apparently looking for a “fresh face.” Faircloth at this point felt some encouragement from Sanford. With Sanford out, Faircloth became the leading contender and set about organizing his campaign, gaining support, especially from conservative Democrats. Reacting to Faircloth’s seeming success and fearing that he was too conservative, party leaders reassessed their decision to discourage Sanford. They persuaded him to enter the contest. He immediately became the favorite.

These actions pulled the rug out from under Faircloth, who withdrew from the campaign. Sanford went on to win the primary handily and won election to the senate. Faircloth quietly seethed. His opportunity for revenge came six years later in 1992 when Sanford stood for reelection. Faircloth had become a Republican and had the support of Sen. Jesse Helms and the powerful conservative Congressional Club. With Sanford fighting illness at the end of the campaign, Faircloth won by four percentage points. Revenge. Ugly. And sweet. Note: The author was the Democratic nominee for the 9th District U.S. House seat in 1984 and 1986.

A Moment in Time is the only organization of its kind in Guilford County that is based on the national Memory Café concept. “With A Moment in Time we will follow its format, but add our own unique spin,” Gulledge explained. “The meetings we attended before Covid shut them down were fun,” said Carol Phillips who attended with her husband Larry. “We try to do as much together as we can and this is something we can share. It is nice to get together with people who have similar lives. We did not know them at first, but they have become friends. “The meetings are conducted so that everyone feels comfortable. We are look-
ing forward to attending them again.” The upcoming Aug. 17 meeting will incorporate a baseball theme with snacks, crafts and other activities centered on that great American sport. The High Point Rockers baseball club is making a donation toward that meeting. All meetings are free and open to the public and although registration is recommended, it is not required to attend. CONtINUeD FrOM FrONt Golf Maintenance “We have sold several pieces of unused equipment on govdeals.com, and have started moving some equipment into the refurbished fairgrounds building including all greens covers, said Jamey Claybrook, golf course superintendent. “The fairways, tees and greens surrounds turf grasses all have responded well to the fertilizer application in late May, and we have also just completed several fertilizer applications to the greens,” Claybrook continued. “We have completed the process of aerification of greens as well. We regularly check soil moisture readings around the course and especially greens so our irrigation water is use efficiently.” Claybrook noted that irrigation leaks on several holes have been repaired but there are still 13 active leaks that will be repaired soon. “We have completed work on the golf course irrigation computer and have completed several communications repairs to the field irrigation satellites. Most of the irrigation sprinkler heads are fully operational, and working well with computer software.”
