Arriving ahead of the bell
New principal excited to begin duties at JES Going to a different school is somewhat an adventure for Christa DiBonaventura. As the new principal at Jamestown Elementary School, DiBonaventura views the position as an opportunity to meet new people, learn new educational strategies, grow as an individual and help others grow as well. “I have heard wonderful things about JES and feel I can make a difference in the lives of the children there,” DiBonaventura said.
DiBonaventura had wanted to work in education since she was a child. She credits the fantastic teachers and leaders she had in school with the fact she carried through with that desire. She began her educational career as a third-grade teacher, but the encouragement and support of her colleagues, mentors and other principles took her a step further into administration. A step across county lines brought her to Jamestown Elementary. She comes to Guilford County Schools from Davidson County, where she served as principal at E. Lawson Brown
Planning Board to consider zoning, annexation for Johnson Farm By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Planning Board will hold a public hearing at their regular meeting on Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center. The public hearing is to consider an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow for the new Planned Unit Development (PUD) zoning. Five parcels of the Johnson farm property are to be considered: • 2221 Guilford College Road (Parcel #159144) approximately 27.89 acres +/-, from AG (Agricultural) to PUD (Planned Unit Development) • 5300 Mackay Road (Parcel #159105) approximately 30.70 acres +/-, from AG to PUD • 2207 Guilford College Road (Parcel #159106) approximately 384.49 acres +/-, from AG to PUD • 5230 Mackay Road (Parcel #65604) approximately 0.41 acres +/-, from AG to PUD • 5303 Mackay Road (Parcel #158765) approximately 0.6 acres +/-, from AG to PUD.
Additionally the Planning Board will have an opportunity to discuss the plans for Castleton Village on the Johnson property. Plans were submitted to the Town in late July. The meeting will be closed to the public due to social gathering restrictions due to COVID-19. However, the meeting will be streamed live on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page at https:// www.youtube.com/channel/UCmi_MH3cM_DfOvhsLO9ZC6w. The Board will hear the introduction of the rezoning request at this meeting and is planning to continue the hearing to a special called meeting at a later date. There will be no public comment at this meeting and Planning Director Matthew Johnson does not anticipate a vote at the called meeting. He believes the vote will not be held until the regularly-scheduled meeting on Sept. 14 at which time the public will be allowed to offer public comments by admission to the room per COVID-19 regulations in see farm, page 2

Middle, Churchland Elementary and Friendship Elementary. Her school has met or exceeded academic growth targets for three consecutive years. DiBonaventura received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Appalachian State University. She obtained both a master’s degree in school administration and a doctoral degree in education leadership from Gardner-Webb University. She is excited to begin work at Jamestown Elementary. “Elementary school is the foundation for a child’s entire education,” DiBonaventura said.
DiBonaventura is currently completing responsibilities in the Davidson County School system before coming to JES full time on Aug. 10. Once she gets there, she plans one-on-one meetings with the staff before school begins virtually for students Aug. 17. “I also want parents to know that my door is open to them,” she said. “Although school will be starting online, I know GCS has lots of support systems in place during these unprecedented times. It will be different, but I believe JES is going to do an Submitted Photo

Golf course figures down but rising By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com As expected, COVID-19 has not been kind to Jamestown Park revenues. Fourth quarter 2020 paid golf rounds at 5,307 were just slightly more than half of the 10,041 for the same period in 2019. However, rounds played for the entire 2019/2020 season were 24,066, just over 3,000 fewer than the 27,663 rounds played in 2018/19. “Rounds have continued to rise since reopening,” said Ross Sanderlin, golf course manager at the July 21 Town Council meeting. “We’re up 25 percent over last July and the month isn’t over.” Greens fees for June 2020 showed a 5.69 percent decrease over the previous year, but rounds played, not including complementary play, were actually up slightly in June of this year, 3,280 compared to 3,197 last June. Year-to-date figures show 22,072 rounds played in 2020, 25,565 in 2019. There was only one bad-weather day in June of this year and five in 2019. Clubhouse rentals for 2019/20 were $8,760 compared to $11,410 for 2018/19. The clubhouse has closed for rentals for several months
due to the virus. The grill was open for take-out only, resulting in a loss of over $4,000. Year-to-date, the grill is behind $20,000, or about 25 percent. Overall, operating revenue for June 2020 was $104,037, compared to June 2019, which was $111,208, down 6.45 percent. Year-to-date operating revenue is down 14.34 percent. Expenditures were up in June 2020 by approximately 9 percent in comparison to June 2019 because some expenditures were put off during the course closure but actually occurred in June when the course was open. In addition, there were expenditures needed to provide for COVID-19 safety measures, such as
rental of hand sanitizing stations, etc. Overall, for the entire fiscal year, both revenues and expenditures were down from the previous year due to having been closed for 43 days due to the coronavirus. Capital expenditures were up, however, due to some projects that were done during the course closure, such as repaving some areas of the cart paths. It was easier to get this accomplished when the course was closed. “We are slowly going back to normal hours,” Sanderlin said, “but we’re closing earlier.” “We are avoiding [having] tournaments and large gatherings and we’re spreading out large groups so they all won’t be on the tee box at the same time.”
N.C. black inventors provided many important products By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Black lives matter is an important phrase these days and throughout history, the lives of many people of color from our state have greatly added to life as we have come to know it. The horseless carriage, cotton cultivator, a blend of tobacco, ice cream freezer, doll with movable eyes, turn signal for a car, portable heart/lung machine and electric airplane, to name a few. What do these items have in common? They were all invented by African-Americans from North Carolina. Dr. Lenwood Davis, retired professor from Winston-Salem State University, is the author of Black Inventors in North Carolina. He mentioned there was no book written about North Carolina inventors, prompting him to write North Carolina Inventors: Whites, Blacks, Women and Indians, published in 2009. He is also the author of sev-

eral other books on black history. “No one knows the exact date of the first AfricanAmerican inventor in North Carolina,” Davis said. “What we do know is that African-Americans have a long history of being artisans, craftsmen, mechanics. As slaves, African-Americans made a number of things associated with a plantation. There were also see inventors, page 2

continued from front outstanding job of making the start of the new school year successful. “Teachers were put through a challenge at the end of last year and they worked hard then and during the summer to improve what they learned and make it better. Nothing can replace a teacher’s personal support and nurturing, but we will do what we have to do until we can get back together in the building.” The pandemic has certainly changed the mold of education by providing an opportunity to study online. DiBonaventura feels some students may want to continue that, but many will prefer to have a face-to-
face experience with teachers in the classroom. Encouraging children to learn includes reading, an activity she endorses by example. DiBonaventura enjoys books by author James Patterson because of his variety of writings for different age levels. Her favorite children’s book is The Giving Tree written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein. “It teaches such a cool lesson about life that is good for children and adults,” DiBonaventura said. Recently DiBonaventura learned to play golf, joining her parents, husband and children in their par-
ticipation of the sport. “I am terrible at it, but getting better,” she said. “It is the only thing I do terribly, but still enjoy. Realizing I am a left-handed golfer like my dad has improved my game.” But with little time between the beginning of her new job and the start of the school year, DiBonaventura’s focus will probably be less on golf for the time being and more on organizing fall learning opportunities for the students at Jamestown Elementary. “I feel honored to serve as that school’s principal,” she said.

continued from front place at that time. “The Board needs to do their job first,” Johnson said regarding the lack of public comment at the two meetings. The Board will review the Castleton Village plans with the opportunity to go back to the applicant, Diamondback Investment Group, with suggested changes. Diamondback also requested annexation for the property, but that request goes straight to Town Council, not to the Planning Board. Once the Planning Board approves the plan, it will then go to the Council. “It probably won’t go before Council to vote until at least November,”

Johnson said of the annexation and rezoning request. After six months of agenda hopping due to the COVID-19 virus, on June 16 the Jamestown Town Council finally unanimously approved a text amendment to the Land Development Ordinance adding a new zoning district, Planned Unit Development (PUD). The timing of the announcement by Diamondback to develop the Johnson farm on Guilford and Mackay roads muddied understanding about the PUD, with many believing the amendment was because of the Johnson property plan. However, the Jamestown Planning Board approved the PUD in November 2019 and Diamondback’s plan was not unveiled until February 2020. Still, Town officials undoubtedly felt development would be coming on several possible large pieces of property in Jamestown, notably near the bypass, the
Auman property on Harvey Road, the Johnson farm, some owned by the Ragsdale family and other properties. That possibility caused Town officials to initiate the text amendment. No development plans have been submitted for any of these properties – including the Johnson property – at this time. “PUD is a zoning tool which is used to create flexibility for both the Town and a potential developer in order to help achieve a more acceptable development outcome,” Johnson said earlier. “It is to be used to accommodate commercial, residential and mixed-use development on large-scale sites of 10 acres or more. It gives the Planning Board and Town Council more control over types of development. “You can create the product you want to see in Jamestown,” Johnson added. “This [amendment] will give you the legal ability to hold [a developer’s] feet to the fire.”
free African-Americans who were craftsmen and inventors.” In 1790 the United States government passed the U.S. Patent Act, which gave patent rights to inventors, including free blacks. Slaves would not have this privilege until the 14th Amendment passed in 1868, guaranteeing rights of citizens and other persons. Previously, since slaves were not considered citizens, they could not enter into contracts with their owners or government. The first documented African-American inventor from North Carolina was Lunsford Lane, born in Raleigh in 1803. He was a household servant on a plantation and he was taught how to grow a certain type of tobacco. He invented a pipe that cooled the smoke as tobacco passed through it. In 1835, he made enough money, through this invention and other entrepreneurial endeavors, to buy his freedom and later, the freedom of his wife and five children. An historical marker stand on East Edenton Street in Raleigh noting his accomplishments. Another early black inventor in North Carolina, Horde Spears, received a patent in 1870 for an invention for an improvement in shields for infantry – the forerunner of our modern day tank. And there were other African-American patent owners. “Edward Sutton was the second AfricanAmerican inventor from North Carolina to receive a patent. He thought there was an easier way to cultivate cotton. In 1874, he received a patent for his cotton cultivator.” In 1898 John Austin invented a horseless carriage. The “Pittsboro-Chatham Record” at the time said, “The machine is propelled by condensed air which can be used as a motor at very little expense and is more powerful than steam power.” There is no evidence Austin ever received a patent or that it was ever produced. W. F. Johnson, who was born in 1887 in Greensboro, was the first African-American to design an airplane – an electricpowered plane in 1910. Apparently only a model was built, however. Sarah Boone, who was born a slave in Craven County, N.C., invented a new style of ironing board in 1892, designed to improve ease of ironing sleeves and bodies of women’s clothing. Sidney Nathaniel Davidson patented a pants presser in 1914. More recently, Winser Edward Alexander invented a system for enhancing detail in thermal photographs in 1967 and Andrew Williams and Richard H. Ames
patented a drilling instrument for the brain in 1972. Alonzo D. Parker, Jr. from Durham had more inventions than any other AfricanAmerican in North Carolina. Between 1974-90 he had eight inventions, from exercise machines to a reclining chair. The woman with the most inventions by any African-American was Mary Bernice Kenner who was born in 1912 outside Raleigh. She had over 40 inventions to her credit, including a convertible top for a rumble seat in the 1930s. She was not able to finance it, however, so the invention was never produced. She was later turned down for some patents because she was African-American but did receive patents for five inventions, one of which was the bathroom tissue holder. Some of these inventors envisioned items that were only improvements on existing products, but they are considered inventions nonetheless. “Inventions don’t have to be big things. Everything we use has been invented,” Davis said. African-American inventors from across the United States have come up with many items that are now in everyday use. Joseph Winters, of Chambersburg, Pa., came up with the idea of a folding ladder for fire wagons to rescue people from upper stories of buildings. He received a patent for it in 1878. In the 1880s, Judy Reed, of Washington, D.C., invented a kneading and rolling machine for bread making. She is one of the first black women to receive a patent. In 1891, Philip Downing of Boston invented the big, blue letterboxes still seen outside post offices and other locations around towns. Other than protecting the mail from getting wet, however, they were constructed so mail could not easily be stolen. Joseph Nichols and Lewis Latimer perfected Thomas Edison’s light bulb invention in New York City 1881 by improving the filament inside. Garrett Morgan saw a traffic accident in Cleveland, Ohio, and realized a traffic signal could have prevented the accident. His invention came in 1923. Frederick McKinley invented the roof-mounted refrigerated delivery truck in 1940. He co-founded the U.S. Thermo Control Company, later known as Thermo King. Alexander Miles almost fell to his death falling into an elevator shaft because the doors had to be manually closed. He received a patent in 1887 for an automatic door that would open and close the elevator doors. Dr. James E. West co-created a microphone in 1960 that was used in hearing aids, tape recorders and telephones. It is still used today in telephones and cameras. While working for IBM in the early 1980s, inventor and engineer Mark Dean was part of a team that developed the first IMB personal computer. He also helped develop the first color monitor and first gigahertz processor in 1999.

The Cedarwood Garden Club recently awarded its Yard and Mailbox of the Month winners for August. For Yard of the Month, the winners are Pat and Cecil Little of 2006 Guilford College Road. They have a stunning display of white hydrangeas framing one side of the lawn and a classic container with ferns and caladiums on the other side. For Mailbox of the Month, Shirley and Bill Haworth of 107 Sagewood Road won the award with their bright pink impatiens, germander for the bees, and blue lobelia. Nestled near the mailbox, a rabbit garden ornament welcomes the viewer.
JAMESTOWN — Quentin “Wimpy” Hodgin, 99, celebrated his “Home – Going” on Friday evening, July 31, 2020, at the Hospice Home at High Point, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 25, 1920 in Jamestown, a son of the late Joseph and Myrtle Allred Hodgin. He has been a resident of this area all his life, he attended Jamestown school and later served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World World II. In 1955, he established Hodgin Sprinkler Company (later Hodgin Inc. and Hodgin Sprinkler Inspection Service), and operated it until he was 90 years old. He was a longtime active member of Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church; where he was saved in the early 1970’s, served on the board, was a member of the Wesleyan Men, and participated with the seniors on the supper excursions. Wimpy loved deep sea fishing, going to the “Singing Echoes” Homecoming, and celebrations; especially his birthday, which over 100 guests attended every year since his 90th birthday. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends; having made a hole in one in 1968, at Summer Hills, and winning the High Point Classic in 1969. He also loved the Atlanta Braves and Duke basketball. His true love and passion was spending time with his family. Wimpy loved his Lord, his family and his friends, and will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his wife of 56 years; Mae Young Hodgin; his infant son, Junior; his brother, Kermit Hodgin; his sister, Juanita Carlton and a bonus daughter, Wanda Dills. He leaves to cherish his memory:
his daughters, Carolyn Howard and her husband, Randy; Barbara Smith and her husband, Keith; his grandchildren; Felicia Sebastian and her husband, Eddie; Daniel Howard and his wife, Tina;Abby Owenby and her husband, Brent; Adrienne Epperson and her husband, Matthew; his great grandchildren: Holly Sebastian, Ayden Fiery, Andrew Owenby, Gabe Epperson, Quentin “Quen” Epperson, Mattie Ann Epperson and Raelynn Epperson. Also surviving are his bonus daughter, Paulette Brewer and her husband, Don; his bonus son in-law, Joe Dills; his bonus grandchildren, Cheryl Martin and her husband, David; Donald Brewer and his wife, Jennifer; Branson Dills and his wife, Cindy; Wendy Dills; Jonathan Dills and his wife Danielle; 13 bonus great-grandchildren and 2 bonus great-great grandchildren. A service to celebrate Wimpy’s life will be held on Wednesday afternoon, August 5, at 2 o’clock, at Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church. The committal service will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. His family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, August 4, from 6 until 8 o’clock, at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.
