Annual pig pickin’ fundraiser highlights derby theme By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com The theme for the 12th annual Family Service of the Piedmont’s pig pickin’ fundraiser in Jamestown is Derby Days: Hats and Hogs. But don’t expect to find racing horses, or hogs for that matter, at this derby. What you will find is lively entertainment, delicious food and happy encounters with friends and acquaintances. “We are encouraging guests to wear outlandish (derby style) hats to add to the festivities,” said Mark Whitesell, chair for this year’s event. The Pig Pickin’ will be held Oct. 9 from 7-11 p.m. at the home of Dr. Steven and Andrea Davis, who also are serving as this year’s honorary chairs. Parking will be available at Jamestown United Methodist Church and guests will be shuttled to the location. The Troupers will be on hand to provide entertainment with a can’t-sit-down style of dance music. In its second decade, the
group offers lots of musical fun in a variety of genres including jazz, R&B, rock and contemporary dance classics. As in years past, the menu will feature barbecue pork and chicken served by BBQ Joe’s County Cooking & Catering, along with southern sides, desserts, beer and wine. The cost is $65 per person, which is all-inclusive. Tickets go on sale to the public Sept. 24 online at www.jamestownpigpickin.com. The event also will include a raffle for an 18kt white gold Hearts of Fire diamond necklace valued at $4,000 and donated by Simon Jewelers. A silent auction will offer opportunities to bid on fabulous vacations at home and aboard (airfare for two included), jewelry, restaurant gift cards and more. You do not need to be present to win. TCDI (Technology Concepts & Design Inc.) is once again serving as the event’s presenting sponsor. Other sponsorships are: Photos by Norma B. Sweet Dough
Bakeshop opens in North High Point By Chanel Davis YES! Weekly Editor *This story originally printed in YES! Weekly August 11, 2021. Traci Thompson always knew she would be a baker. She didn’t know how or when it would come about, but she knew it would happen. Thompson can’t think of a time where she was not baking and has fond memories of baking with her grandmother and mother when she was a little girl. “It’s something that I fell in love with as a little girl,” she said. It was something she would take with her as she traveled across the country with her husband, Ray, and their child. While Ray’s job took them to new cities, it was her baking that brought in a little piece of home. “This is home, but my husband’s job sent us to New York City and later Seattle,” she said. “Throughout that whole time, I baked for family and friends.” A family death would cause the couple to re-evaluate their situation and eventually give Thompson the opportunity she’d dreamed of. “My husband lost his dad, and
because of COVID we couldn’t come from Seattle for the funeral,” she said. “My husband’s job pretty much asked him to work remotely, just like everyone else, we thought there is really no reason for us to be all the way across the country from our families, so we decided to come home, and then we decided to stay.” A little over a year ago, Thompson and her husband were going about their daily routine when he asked her a life-changing question. He asked the stay-at-home mom what her “dream job” would be, and she responded with opening a bakery. A few months later, they stumbled
upon a familiar location. “We would go to work out, go to the juice shop, and we would go get avocado toast and juice,” she said. “One day she was gone, and it was due to COVID. She couldn’t survive it. And then we realized this is it. This is the location that we want to get.” Having already been in the throes of planning, it didn’t take Thompson long to get Sweet Dough settled at 2758 NC-68 North in High Point. On any given day, the bakeshop will offer cupcakes, icebox cakes, see sweet, page 2

September 11: What do we say now? Second World War. Even if there is a successful military strike against bin Laden or his terrorist training camps, it will not win our “war.” Indeed, we must expect that an attack will unify and strengthen the terrorists and their supporters, just as the attack on the twin towers and the Pentagon brought us together and strengthened our resolve. Do not mistake me. A military strike may very well be an important part of our response to this challenge. If terrorism is a kind of cancer affecting the entire world, then radical surgery is probably a part of a comprehensive treatment plan. But radical surgery on a cancer patient is often an incomplete cure. And sometimes the surgery brings about its own set of unintended consequences. Similarly, military action cannot bring about a complete solution to the terrorism cancer, and every military strike will bring about its own set of unintended consequences.
Our efforts against terrorism and its causes are going to be long and drawn out. We can’t maintain a “wartime” footing for so long. Maybe “war” is not the best word to describe to describe our commitment against terrorism. Of course, this is not the first time our government has rallied us around a commitment to solve a serious problem by calling for a “war.” We have the war on poverty. The war on drugs. The war on crime. And we have declared war on racial hatred, on AIDS and other diseases, on underperforming schools, on unsafe automobiles, on the polluters of the environment, and on many other varieties of “evil.” We haven’t yet won any of those wars. There have been some great victories. Things are better than they would’ve been. But “complete victory” was probably never possible. Our national effort in all

these areas continues--but without a “total war” commitment. We learned each time that we could not sustain a total national commitment to all these “wars” at the same time. As we begin our national effort against worldwide terrorism, it might be well for us to remember our prior wars against these other endemic problems. Remember that they last a long time, remember that there are few decisive victories, and remember that Americans’ attention spans don’t last through long drawn-out indecisive wars. Remembering those lessons and putting aside the war terminology, our leaders can better emphasize our country’s need for a sustainable, long-term commitment to the development and patient implementation of wise policies to track down terrorists, clear out their breeding grounds, and deal with

Depending on the level of sponsorship, yard signs and tickets to the event will be provided. The deadline for sponsors to be included in mailings that will be sent to 2,000 local families is Sept. 10. To be listed on the invitation and signage at the event, sign up by Sept. 20. Recognition also will be given on the Family Service of the Piedmont website and social media sites, in the agency’s newsletter and in thank-you ads in local newspapers. A sponsor appreciation cocktail party, at which a victim of domestic violence will be the guest speaker, is planned for Sept. 23. Sponsors at the silver level or above will be invited to a Swine Soiree immediately preceding the pig pickin’. The Jamestown Pig Pickin’ aims to increase awareness of Family Service in Jamestown and surrounding areas, as well as to raise funds to support agency programs. The organization serves more than 19,000 clients who deal with issues of domestic violence, child abuse, mental health and financial stability.

Marty Haley and Susan Dean carefully place design elements onto green and pink derby shirts respectively. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help Family Service of the Piedmont address victims’ needs, allowing the private non-profit organization to continue building safe and healthy families in the community as it has for the past 80 years. Last year’s Safe at Home Pig Pickin’, a drive-thru campaign due to the pandemic, raised over $150,000. “I want to thank everyone for stepping up last year, but issues supported by Family Service of the Piedmont are ongoing,” Whitesell said. “We are
behind in this year’s goal and need more people to sponsor this fundraiser. “This is one of the first in-person fundraisers in a while. Personally I am ready to get out and party for a good cause.” For more information about supporting the Derby Days: Hats and Hogs Pig Pickin’ fundraiser, contact Whitesell at 336-39-0348 or email mark.whitesell@rentalsupplyinc.com. Her husband and family help out on nights and weekends, and she said that their friends are excited about their newly founded business venture. “Everybody has been very supportive, and they’ve made it very easy for us,” she said. Thompson said that depending on what day you come to the bakeshop “there may be something different than the day before.” “We’re pretty much known for our cinnamon rolls and our sticky buns. They’re huge,” she said. “They are the size of your fist pretty much. It’s brioche bread so it’s not very sweet. It’s the topping that’s the sweet part so it kind of balances out, and

it’s just delicious.” Thompson said that she wants Sweet Dough to be a place of innovation and a one-stop-shop when it comes to picking up baked goods. She’s hoping to add a plant-based baker and breads to the menu in the future. “I want to have a bunch of different items. I want to be innovative and have seasonal things,” she emphasized. “You don’t have to go to one place for cupcakes and then go home and bake a pie or go to the store to pick up a pie from somewhere else.” One thing she can guarantee customers is that she’s brought her travels back to the area but added her own twist. “Some of my recipes come from my mom, and some come from things we

We had our favorites when we lived in those places, and so I brought some of those recipes back and put a southern twist on them,” a technique she perfected while living out of town to remind her home. She also incorporates the recipes of her staff. “They’ve brought recipes, and what they’ve brought to the table has sold really well. So they’ve put their spin on the menu, as well,” Thompson said. “They are like my family, and I want them to have a part in this, as well.” Thompson said while opening during a pandemic isn’t ideal, this was the right time for her, and it is still exciting. She says that while she hopes there is not another shutdown, she
feels everyone is ready to get back out into the world. “There is always that fear but you can’t really live in that fear. You’ve got to go for it. If it works that’s awesome and if it doesn’t that’s a lesson learned,” she said. When it comes to operating her bakeshop, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s hard work, but it doesn’t feel like work at all. It’s fun. I’ve been so blessed with the employees that I’ve gotten. Every single one of them is so good and so responsible. It’s fun.” Sweet Dough, located at 2758 NC-68 North in High Point, is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday Saturday, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit sweetdoughbakeshop.com.
the root causes of their activity. Using more restrained words to describe our resolve against terrorism, it may be easier for us to remember that there are other common tasks that are also critical to a healthy and safe America: fighting crime, promoting health, building a strong economy, strengthening education, improving the environment, and working together for a stronger, better country. If the terrorists have diverted us from those on-going tasks, they have already won.

Retro dinner gets a modern makeover
By patti diamond divas on a dime
Perhaps best known as an iconic TV dinner, Salisbury steak has been a favorite dinner in my family for decades. It’s such an old school, comforting meal from back in the day. In honor of National TV Dinner Day, Sept. 10, 2021, let’s revisit a classic. When I was a kid, it was a special occasion for me to get a TV dinner, reserved for those rare times when my folks went out and I had a babysitter. Do you remember the ones in the aluminum pans with the individual compartments for each food? When I was 8 years old it was so exciting. A whole miniature meal, all for myself. My favorite was the Salisbury steak dinner with whipped potatoes that had a yellow square of what we can only assume was a pat of butter, peas and perfectly square carrots, and in the upper center compartment, a blissful chocolate brownie! Oh, joy! Kids today just don’t understand the excitement. (Boy, I sound ancient!) Now everything is frozen and zapped in the microwave. I updated the recipe, but the
essence remains. Most recipes from back in the day called for a can of this and a packet of that. My recipe is made simply from scratch, and the difference is glorious. This lip-smacking savory, beefy delight is even better when it’s homemade.
1. Start with the onion. To clarify — cut the onion in half. You’ll finely mince one half and thinly slice the remaining half into rings or half-moons depending on which direction you sliced the onion. If you’re serving mashed potatoes, start them now or they won’t CLASSIC SALISBURY be ready when the Salisbury STEAK WITH steaks are done. MUSHROOM GRAVY 2. OK! Slow-Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup Mention “slow-cooker meals” and your mind no doubt drifts to chilly fall and winter weather eating. Mine, too, until my oldest son, Bjorn, took charge of dinner a few nights ago and ladled up bowlfuls of his tasty slow-cooker chicken tortilla soup. Topped with crisp bean sprouts from the Asian market, cilantro from the garden and a handful of grated cheese and crushed chips, his version of TexMex/Asian fusion made for healthy family fare. It even gets better when considering the three-minute prep-time factor. No need to saute the chicken or chop vegetables ahead of time. Simply let your kids open five cans of basic ingredients while you unwrap a package of fresh chicken breasts.

Three-Cheese Pizza This recipe features three cheeses with distinctly different textures and flavors — delicate, fresh mozzarella, creamy ricotta and chewy Pecorino Romano.
1. Place all soup ingredients in a slow cooker and stir together lightly. Cover, set slow cooker to low and cook for 6-8 hours. 2. When ready to serve, remove the cooked chicken and shred into bite-size pieces with a fork. Place the shredded chicken back in the slow cooker and stir. Cook for another hour if you wish, or ladle in large soup bowls. 3. Add toppings according to taste. Serve with a green salad and enjoy fresh fruit for dessert. 1 pound fresh pizza dough 4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, coarsely shredded 1/2 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 1/3 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on mediumlow. 2. Cut dough into 4 equal pieces. On one end of oiled cookie sheet, with fingertips, spread and flatten 1 piece of dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. (Edge does not need to be even.) On same cookie sheet, repeat with another piece of dough. Repeat with a second oiled cookie sheet and remaining dough. 3. Place all 4 pieces of dough, oiled side down, on hot grill grate. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until grill marks appear on underside (dough will stiffen and puff). 4. With tongs, turn crusts over. Working quickly, top crusts with mozzarella; then dollop with ricotta and sprinkle with Pecorino Romano cheese and pepper. Cover grill and cook pizzas 3 to 4 minutes longer or until undersides are evenly browned and cooked through. 5. Transfer to cutting board; sprinkle tops of pizzas with parsley. Cut into wedges. Makes 4 servings. TIP: Look for fresh pizza dough in the dairy section of your supermarket, usually sold near the tortillas. (Frozen pizza dough is also available, but it takes several hours to thaw before it can be used.)
