Council to vote on ballot language BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council will meet Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. On the agenda is a look at the language that will be placed on the November ballot for the vote on the amendment to the Town’s charter to stagger the terms of mayor and Council. Earlier this year, the Council began serious discussions regarding extending the terms from two to four years for mayor and Coun-

cil. The Council favored the longer term, citing several reasons, including continuity of leadership. On May 21, the Council unanimously approved an ordinance amending the town charter regarding staggering terms for council members. This vote would have gone into effect June 22 except a petition was received, signed by 356 people opposing the change. The Guilford County Board of Elections determined that 324 of those were registered voters. Only 298 signatures were required. At a called meeting July 5, the Council unanimously voted to

amend the town charter to reflect the staggered terms and to place the charter amendment on the ballot at the Nov. 5 general election, with the outcome affecting that election. However, that decision was changed at the July 16 Council meeting when Town Attorney Beth Koonce declared the outcome of the vote could not go into affect until the 2021 election, not this year. This is in compliance with General Statutes 160A-109 and Article 27 of chapter 163A. If voters approve the measure, it means, as of the 2021 election, the Mayor will be elected to a four-

year term and the two candidates for Council receiving the highest number of votes will be elected to four-year terms. Those receiving the next highest number of votes will serve two-year terms. These two-year councilmembers would be up for re-election in 2021 and could run for a four-year term. Thus, a maximum of half of the Council would be elected every two years. In other business, Public Services Director Paul Blanchard will give an update on the town’s sidewalk projects and Town Manager Kenny Cole will give an update on the Oakdale Cotton Mill situation.

Old School BBQ returns BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

It’s time again for the Old Jamestown School BBQ, Sept. 28 from 4-7 p.m., rain or shine, on the Jamestown Library Commons. Back by popular demand are The Pink Panthers, playing beach music for your shagging enjoyment. All late-’60s Ragsdale High School graduates, the Panthers got back together just last year. “The Pink Panthers hadn’t played together for 25 years before last year,” said Nancy Waller Lowery, one of the BBQ organizers. “One person comes from Tennessee and one from Florida.” The music is free but anyone wanting a plate of BBQ Joe’s Country Cooking – BBQ, slaw, baked beans, hush puppies, along

with tea or lemonade and a dessert – needs a ticket. Tickets are available for $14 in advance at the Jamestown Public Library, 200 W. Main St. but can also be purchased for the same amount Sept. 21 at Day in the Park at High Point City Lake Park and at the event. “You don’t have to have a ticket, but it helps us tell BBQ Joe’s how much to bring,” Lowery said. Proceeds go to maintaining the 104-year-old library building, once the Jamestown Public School. “The proceeds do not go to buying books,” Lowry said of the maintenance SEE BBQ, PAGE 3

Steven Beck, Jake Tice, Lynn Tice and Deanna Privette, bottom to top, have embarked on a new business venture in Jamestown. Beck and Privette are co-owners of Triad Marketplace, located in the Yellow House at 109 W. Main St. Jake is the owner of Guiltless Café, the perfect complement to the Marketplace, while his mother, Lynn will continue to conduct healthy eating classes at the location on Mondays.

The Jamestown Planning Board’s September meeting has been moved from the second Monday to the third Monday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m. An agenda was not available at press time, but the Jamestown News has learned there will be a public hearing to consider a rezoning request from Maryfield, Inc. (Pennybyrn) for 111 Penny Road, 113 Penny Road and 115 Penny Road. The request asks for a change from Single Family Residential to Conditional Zoning Civic. A copy of the proposed ordinance and map are on file in the town clerk’s office for inspection. The public is invited to attend the Planning Board meeting in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.

For several years Triad Marketplace has been making a name for itself in Greensboro. But when co-owners Steven Beck and Deanna Privette saw an opportunity to move the business to Jamestown, they took it. Their store recently opened in the Yellow House at 109 W. Main St. “We’re excited about what other businesses in the area have been doing in recent years and want to feed off that excitement,” Beck said. “Plus the small-town feel is present here. We think these two things go together. We are very appreciative of the space and architecture of the house itself. It goes with a lot of offerings we have. We make a big push to be local and natural.” In addition to Triad Marketplace, Beck owns two other businesses – Black Dog Lawn Care and Landscape and Black Dog Wood Creations. Many of his wood creations are for sale at Triad Marketplace including signs, furniture and other home décor. Triad Marketplace carries merchandise from a variety of vendors, including pottery, jewelry, clothing, and repurposed home décor and gifts. Beck and Privette want their business to be more than a place to

As an update to the Council’s Aug. 20 decision to decline a text amendment to the town ordinances to allow the keeping of miniature pigs within town limits, Town Attorney Beth Koonce informed the Jamestown News that the town sent a letter to the pigs’ owner, Lori Herron, stating she must remove the pigs from her property at 2216 Guilford College Road on or before Oct. 4 of this year. Following the Aug. 20 meeting, Herron stated she planned to appeal the decision. The public is invited to attend the Town Council meeting.

GUILFORD MEMORIAL PARK

DEAR T.S.: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I think he likely did have a heart attack, which is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Although many people have symptoms of heart disease that they ignore, some people have no symptoms until sudden death. Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol plaque and calcium in the blood vessels of the heart, almost always is present in people with a heart attack. The initial symptom of a heart attack varies widely. Throat discomfort is not rare. Cough is a common symptom, as the heart becomes damaged and the pressure in the lungs increases. The classic symptom of chest pain certainly does happen, but there are many variations. Both men and women can have atypical presentations. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Parkinson’s disease. He also has a stent in his heart. We have been to many doctors to address a breathing problem: fast breathing. He experiences this daily, and we are told that it is anxiety. It is difficult to watch him go through this. It sometimes happens before he is due for his Sinemet, but other times right after taking it. He has been prescribed Xanax, clonidine, cannabidiol-infused gummies and a few others. One doctor says it is from Parkinson’s, but the rest say it is anxiety. — E.W. DEAR E.W.: Shortness of breath can have many causes, but someone with Parkinson’s disease has an unusual possibility, called “respiratory dyskinesia” (which just means “abnormal movement of the muscles of breathing”). This is an involuntary rapid breathing that causes distress, and it usually happens an hour after taking a medication like Sinemet. Changing the dose can help with diagnosis, and working with a neurologist to adjust the dose of the Sinemet (which comes in fast-acting and slow-release formulations) can solve the problem. I would start with an expert on Parkinson’s. Keeping a diary of when he takes his medication and when the breathing trouble starts and stops will be helpful, as would a video of what it looks like when happening. Having Parkinson’s doesn’t make someone less likely to have other causes of shortness of breath, and anyone with a stent in the heart (meaning a history of blockages of at least one heart artery) is at risk of developing further blockages. Poor blood flow to the heart is another potential cause. Get the Parkinson’s evaluation first. I would not recommend anti-anxiety medications unless there is clear evidence of benefit. Ascribing a physical symptom like shortness of breath to anxiety without a thorough workup is unwise. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DEAR DR. ROACH: My very healthy husband collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. They worked on him for a long time but could not revive him. They didn’t do an autopsy, and they declared his death as “atherosclerotic vascular disease.” He was 79 years old and had no health problems. He came into the house and said that something was in his throat and he couldn’t swallow. He tried to cough it up, but nothing came up. He then collapsed. He had no pain. I am still puzzled by that symptom of a heart attack. Have you ever heard of that? I am really curious and still in shock. I hope you can explain. — T.S.

Healthy House 56 becomes Guiltless Café BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Shoppers who have frequented Health House 56 in Jamestown for sugarfree, gluten-free, soy-free and preservative-free food items will still be able to purchase many of their favorites at Guiltless Café. Jake Tice, who along with his mother, Lynn, owned Healthy House 56, has simply taken the business in a new direction. “Guiltless Café is now Jake’s business,” Lynn noted. “But I will still teach classes on how to eat better for better health on Mondays at noon and in the evening. “Jake wanted to capture all wellness programs so changed the name of the business to Guiltless Café.” The café is one of the major vendors of Triad Marketplace, which recently relocated its business to 109 W. Main St. in Jamestown. It will offer a variety of healthy desserts, along with organic coffees, teas, kombucha and wines. Customers can buy an entire cheesecake or purchase it by the slice to enjoy

on site after they have finished shopping. Muffins and cupcakes, all of which are made with natural sugar substitutes to be guilt free, make the perfect complement to a hot cup of coffee or tea. There will also be charcatirie – a meat and cheese board – soups, crackers, pimento cheese and snacks. A microwave will be available in which customers can heat their food. “Local is our focus,” Jake said. “Our kombucha is made by Up Dog Company out of Winston-Salem. We sell it by the cup, bottle, or in 32 oz. and 64 oz. growlers. I also plan to have local caviar, which goes well with wine and cheese.” Anyone looking for a flavorful alternative to sugar and preservatives need look no farther than Guiltless Café, located in the Triad Marketplace. The café hours are the same as the Marketplace hours.

Moving forward, the business will have live music on Friday and Saturday nights and family activities such as S’more Night. People can enjoy creating s’mores or have a dessert – guilt free – from the Guiltless Café, one of the major vendors of the Marketplace. “We would like to become a fixture in the area,” Beck said. “We want it to be a place to not only shop, but also to relax.” Triad Marketplace will be open Wednesday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. “We had a soft opening Sept. 4,” Beck said. “I think people have been pleasantly surprised at the variety of items we have.”

Returning a pet to a shelter BY SAM MAZZOTTA PAW’S CORNER DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am a disabled senior citizen with two beautiful dogs. Recently I was told that I need to move from my apartment to an assisted living facility that doesn’t allow pets. There is no one to take my dogs. Will a shelter take them in? What will happen to them? — Michael G., via email DEAR MICHAEL: The first thing to do is reach out for help. You’re making a huge life transition and should find out what options you have. Contact your city’s senior services department, the United Way or the AARP for assistance. Tell them your dilemma. Ask if there are assisted living facilities available that will allow your pets to stay with you. If you cannot take your dogs with you, contact the shelters in your city or region. Explain your situation, and

that you must surrender your pets. Not all shelters are able to accept surrenders, but all of them can give you information on other places to call for help. When you find a shelter that will accept your dogs, the shelter will probably schedule a day and time for you to come in. You’ll bring your dogs, in carrycages if possible, and will fill out a surrender form. There will probably be a fee for surrendering them. If you need assistance filling out the form, or if you cannot afford the fee, tell the shelter as soon as possible. Once surrendered, the shelter will do its best to find a new home for your dogs. Thank you for thinking of your dogs during this stressful time and making sure they’re cared for no matter what happens. I wish you the best. The threat of Red Britain BY RICH LOWRY

Tory Prime Minister Boris Johnson has, to his credit, seized the initiative in the battle over whether Britain will truly exit the EU, and on what terms. But no one can know how this highstakes gamble will turn out. Johnson just lost his slender parliamentary majority, and the prospect of a new election looms. If things break the wrong way, the winner could be opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, a throwback leftist redolent of the bad old days of Britain’s self-imposed stagnation. It’s hard to exaggerate the threat represented by Corbyn and Co. taking control of our most important ally. In U.S. terms, Corbyn is a mashup of Bernie Sanders and the Squad, mixing orthodox socialist economics with a hostility to U.S. foreign policy and Israel. He is a figure that time is supposed to have forgotten. He inveighed from the back benches against Labor’s turn away from the old-time religion under moderate prime minister Tony Blair. When he mounted an unlikely leadership bid in 2015, he found an audience, much as Bernie Sanders did in 2016. Now, the old-time religion is a few lucky breaks away from power. Corbyn’s past, and present, is littered with valentines to left-wing thugs. He cozied up to the IRA in the 1980s when it was trying to decapitate the British government by bombing. He wrote for a proSoviet newspaper during the Cold War. He called the Russian invasion of Ukraine “not unprovoked.” He’s said warm things about Hamas and Hezbollah, and can’t bear to condemn Islamic terrorism without also criticizing the West. It’s no accident that his Labor Party has become lousy with anti-Semites.

His left-hand man, John McDonnell, shadow chancellor of the exchequer, is fond of implicit threats of violence. To wit, “Any institution or any individual that attacks our class, we will come for you with direct action.” He has called Tory MPs “social criminals.” This from the man in line to become, in our terms, secretary of the treasury of one of the great banking centers on the planet. If McDonnell’s style of rhetoric has a grim revolutionary cast, it’s for good reason. In an interview with — no joke — the Trotskyist Alliance for Workers’ Liberty years ago, he said that the most important influences on him were “Marx, Lenin and Trotsky, basically.” Corbyn has expressed similar sentiments. At least they don’t leave any doubt where they are coming from. If Corbyn had his way, it would be as if Margaret Thatcher never happened (indeed, McDonnell has mused about going back to the 1980s to assassinate her — you know, the way many people do about Adolf Hitler). Corbyn’s program would renationalize sectors of the economy, punish shareholders and landlords, and impose stiff new taxes. If his campaign against capital crashed the pound, he’d surely be inclined to respond with capital controls, truly taking Britain back to the 1970s. Every election in a democratic society is important. But Britain in the coming weeks will be faced with unquestionably momentous choices: Whether to take back its full sovereignty from the EU, and whether to throw in with a dangerous radical. Its modern history, and perhaps that of the West, is in the balance.

Couch Theatre BY AMY ANDERSON Booksmart (R) — Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein star as Amy and Molly, two hyper-driven academic types who realize, on the eve of graduation, that their tendency to skip the social life to hit the books has left them underachievers in high-school fun. So, they attempt to make up for it all at once by living up their partying dreams in a single night — a hilarious combination of fails, nearmisses and triumphs that’s endearing and quite hilarious. The whole experience feels funny and fresh, and is a real coup by actress Olivia Wilde in her feature directorial debut.

Ma (R) — Kids do stupid stuff, like asking perfect strangers who happen to be adults to purchase alcohol for them. Well, when a group of kids approach loner Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer) to be their 21-plus hookup, they get much more than they bargained for: access to Ma’s place, where copious amounts of alcohol flow. It’s a secluded basement crash pad for teens, and the host offers a whole lot of personal attention. Few rules apply; just never enter the upstairs area. But when some of the kids try to pull away, Ma gets progressively possessive and vindictive. Billed as a psychological thriller, it’s from Blumhouse, so

left her family and home to join an enigmatic man who was called the son of God. Pretty brave stuff. The rich source material of an early feminist who unabashedly follows her heart despite the suffocating gender restrictions of her day, particularly a historic woman as maligned as Magdalene — mischaracterized as a prostitute, a disciple who was left out of the historical record — should have been compelling, but I was underwhelmed. It’s beautiful and all the players do the things they should, but it never materializes into the powerful piece it could have been. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Add more seafood to your menu BY ANGELA SHELF MEDEARIS KITCHEN DIVA At our house, we’re always searching for ways to eat healthier ... on a budget. One way to do just that is to add healthly seafood to your menu at least twice a week. This includes both fish and shellfish as the main protein on your plate. Seafood is available in a variety of price points, so it doesn’t have to be expensive. Seafood contains an abundance of nutrients, including healthy omega-3 fats. According to Dietary Guidelines for Americans, eating about 8 ounces per week (less for young children) of a variety of seafood can help prevent heart disease. Here are some tips: Choose wisely: Include the types of seafood that are higher in omega-3s and lower in mercury, such as salmon, trout, oysters, Atlantic and Pacific mackerel, herring and sardines. Keep it lean and flavorful: Try grilling, broiling, roasting or baking — methods that don’t add extra fat. Spices or herbs such as dill, chili powder, paprika or cumin, and lemon or lime juice, can add flavor without adding salt. Shellfish counts, too!: Oysters, mussels, clams and calamari (squid) all supply healthy omega-3s. Try mussels marinara, oyster stew, steamed clams or pasta with calamari.

Get creative with seafood: Think beyond fish fillets. Try salmon patties, a shrimp stir-fry, grilled fish tacos, or clams with whole-wheat pasta. Add variety by trying a new fish such as grilled Atlantic or Pacific mackerel, herring on a salad or oven-baked pollock. Use in a salad or sandwich: Top a salad with grilled scallops, shrimp or crab in place of steak or chicken. Shop smart: Whiting, tilapia, sardines, canned tuna and some frozen seafood are usually lower-cost options. Check the local newspaper, online and at the store for sales, coupons and specials on seafood. Grow up healthy with seafood: Omega-3 fats from seafood can help improve nervous-system development in infants and children. Serve seafood to children twice a week in portions appropriate for their age and appetite. A variety of seafood lower in mercury also should also be part of a healthy diet for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Know your portions: To get 8 ounces of seafood a week, use these as guides: A drained can of tuna is about 3 to 4 ounces, a salmon steak ranges from 4 to 6 ounces and a small trout is about 3 ounces. Keep seafood handy: Canned seafood (think canned salmon, tuna or sardines) is quick and easy to use. Canned white tuna

Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the pasta cooking water for adding to the Pasta Puttanesca at the end of the cooking time. 2. In a large saute pan or skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat, then add the onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add sardines and their oil, then the garlic and Italian seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper, the honey, stevia or sugar, cloves, the red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper, tomatoes, olives, and capers. 3. Turn heat to low and cook until the tomatoes are softened and the sardines are breaking apart, about 15

minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Add the linguine to the pan, then pour in 1 cup of the reserved pasta cooking water, stirring well to combine all the ingredients. If the pasta still looks dry, add the remaining pasta cooking water, 1/2 cup at a time. Season with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper, and the Pecorino Romano or Parmesan.
