As part of the work on updating the Town’s Comprehensive Plan, the Envision Jamestown team from Benchmark Consulting is offering several walking

That is the premise of the 11th Annual Jamestown Pig Pickin’. The uncertainty about the safety of large gatherings has redirected the Family Service of the Piedmont’s local fundraiser to become the Jamestown Pig Pickin’ – Safe at Home event. “We’ll have a drivethrough food pick-up (only) for hosts and sponsors on Oct. 9 at Jamestown United Methodist Church,” said Mark Whitesell, who is chairing the event for the third year. “We are not selling (general) tickets, but asking people to host or sponsor the event and give at least what they gave last

Constitution Week reminds us of our roots

As individuals, our past molds us into what we are today. It is the same for a nation. Throughout the years, two major historical documents have been America’s guiding force. The Declaration of Independence shaped our national identity and the Constitution built the framework on which our government continues to function. Most people recognize the importance of Independence Day, July 4. After all, it is celebrated each year with parades, festivals, picnics and fireworks. But many are unaware of Constitution Week, an annual commemoration of the document that is the basis of America’s heritage and the foundation for its way of life. It also encourages the study of historical events that led to its framing in 1787 and emphasizes the responsibility of citizens to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution.

However, many descendants of James Mendenhall, whom the town is named after, moved to neighboring parts of the county as well as other parts of the country. “Elihu Mendenhall [born 1817] was the son of James Mendenhall and Miriam Hockett. James was the son of Elijah Mendenhall and Mary Kendall. Elijah was the son of James Mendenhall, for whom the town of Jamestown was named, and Hannah Thomas,” said Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace. “Elijah was also the brother of our town founder, George Mendenhall, and an uncle of Richard Mendenhall of Mendenhall Homeplace.” Elihu owned a house on what is now Skeet Club Road in High Point. The current owners of this house, Raul Cardona Torres and Sandra Romero Torres, want to demolish it for redevelopment. They petitioned the Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission for permission to demolish the building. Ironically, Benjamin Briggs, execu-

house had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. It was designated a Guilford County Landmark property in 1993 and a local historic property by High Point the same year. It was eligible for the National Register of Historic Properties but apparently the process was never

I hope the statute of limitations has run on any of my violations of the Hatch Act and campaign contribution limits during the unconventional warfare exercises in the North Carolina Sandhills in 1964. Two news stories last week made me recall happenings from years ago.. The first from The Charlotte Observer reported that Robin Sage, “the U.S. BY D.G. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School are “placed in an environment of political instability characterized by armed conflict.” Other soldiers from Fort Bragg play the role of guerrillas. Counties within the exercise zone are: Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Cumberland, Davidson, Davie, Guilford, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly, Union, and Wake. Fort Bragg warned, “Residents may hear blank gunfire and see occasional flares. Controls are in place to ensure there is no risk to persons or property.” There should be no danger, but in 2002 a Moore County deputy mistook two soldiers for criminals and shot them, killing one. The Army responded to worries about the possible spread of the coronavirus by assuring that all participants in the exercises “have undergone health screenings at multiple points throughout the training pipeline to insure that no soldiers have COVID-19.” The second news story concerned the political activity of Greensboro’s Louis DeJoy, the U.S. Postmas-

Jane Thomas of Greensboro created materials about the Constitution that teachers could use in their remote instruction classes. She also created a special Constitution Week Edition of the Rachel Caldwell Gazette using information from her website www.historybelle.com. She is sharing this with DAR chapters throughout the country, so they in turn can share it with members and teachers in their areas. Debby Beach of Jamestown assembled a display about the Constitution at the Jamestown Post Office and the Historical Museum in Greensboro. She also received a proclamation about the Constitution from Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery and Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughn. “The Articles of Confederation that was written when our country was founded was not working,” Beach said. “They allowed the national government to make laws, but they had no power to enforce the laws. We needed something stronger. But everything could not be addressed at the beginning. That is why the amendments were added.” The men who wrote the Constitution did not take

Artist captures realistic interpretation of historic event In his painting “The Signing of the Constitution,” artist Howard Chandler Christy immortalized the day. He made the painting as accurate as possible by searching for portraits of those who participated in the event. He located portraits of 37 out of 39 delegates and the secretary. Christy also spent time researching authentic costumes and even borrowed a pair of George Washington’s breeches from the Smithsonian. He depicted the furniture and artifacts used back then. The books beside Franklin’s chair were part of Thomas Jefferson’s library. The artist made the sketch for the the responsibility lightly. It took four months of discussion and debate at a convention to come up with the final draft. It was signed at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, 1787, in Independence Hall in Philadelphia. James Madison, although one of the youngest delegates at age 36, is sometimes called the “Father of the Constitution” because of his extensive research before the Convention and the abundance of notes he wrote after each day’s session. Benjamin Franklin, age 81, was the oldest delegate. Not all of Madison’s original plan was accepted, but many elements of it were found in the final Constitution, including three parts to the government – the Executive, the Legislative (which would be divided into two chambers, a Senate and House of Representatives) and the Judiciary.

He even used flags like the Stars and Stripes, another one from a Maryland dragoon regiment, and regimental colors from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. They all would have been used in 1787. In composing the scene, the artist took some liberties, which included painting John Dickinson, whose signature was added by proxy. Three men who were present but did not sign the Constitution are not shown. He obscured the faces of the two signers of whom no portraits were found.

“The happy Union of these States is a wonder; their Constitution a miracle; their example the hope of Liberty throughout the world,” said James Madison after the document was signed. When the delegates came outside, bells were rung throughout Philadelphia to celebrate the event. The new Constitution had to be ratified by nine of the 13 original states before it would become law. North Carolina was the fourth largest state at the time of the convention and the 12th to ratify the Constitution. Since its beginning, the Constitution has seen many changes. In addition to 10 amendments known as the Bill of Rights, 27 other amendments have been added to create a document representing all people. Franklin D. THE PREAMBLE The Preamble is the opening statement of the Constitution. “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” This statement gives American citizens, not the government, the power of rule. In 1690, John Locke said that a government can only rule by consent of the people. It is thought that Gouverneur Morris – his name not a title – (1752-1816) of Delaware wrote the Preamble. But it is not certain that he did it alone or if it was devised and revised by a whole committee.

BILL OF RIGHTS • A “Bill of Rights” is a list of basic human rights guaranteed by law. • The first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution are called the Bill of Rights • They were written at the first meeting of Congress in 1789 and ratified in 1791. • George Mason is credited with being the “Father of the Bill of Rights.” • Virginia’s Declaration of Rights was used as a basis for this part of the Constitution. • James Madison brought 13 amendments to the first Congress to be approved. • In addition to the Bill of Rights, a 27 other amendments have been added to the Constitution. “The Mendenhall/Blair house can be one monument to the antebellum South that is worth saving because it demonstrates our commitment to democracy and equality.” It is believed that the oldest portion of this two-story house is the one-story section, possibly once a separate dwelling. It was probably built by Elihu’s father. Briggs believes the house dates to 1818. Sometime prior to the Civil War, the Greek Revival-style twostory was added, possibly in the 1840s. The property originally covered 350 acres and included a barn, corncrib and milking barn. It began being sold off in the 1970s. The current property covers about 6.5 acres. Margaret David Winslow, wrote A Gift from Grandmother in 1958 and described the house of her grandfather: “It was grandfather Elihu Mendenhall who provided us with the traditional grandfather’s house. He lived on a large farm and operated a

The power of place and authenticity matters. Each loss of a historically significant structure makes the next loss exponentially more difficult to bear. I called Watts Auman and asked him if his family would take in a “spy” for a few weeks. Watts and his brother Bob had been my friends at Davidson College. Their parents, Clyde and Sally were well-known peach farmers in Moore County, and lived right in the middle of the maneuvers. They agreed. I moved in and conducted my “spy” activities under the cover of being a farm helper. Clyde was campaigning for a seat in the North Carolina legislature and Sally and Watts were working on his campaign materials. Their challenge was to persuade folks in Pinehurst and Southern Pines to vote for a farmer from West End. They asked for my help and I gave it willingly. The Aumans had long been active in politics, supporting candidates sympathetic to the needs of farmers. Clyde had been county chair for Kerr Scott’s 1948 campaign for governor and 1954 campaign for the U.S. Senate. The year I was spying, Kerr’s son Bob Scott was running for lieutenant governor. When he came to Moore County to campaign, Watts and I drove him around and he shared with us the highs and lows of political life. Looking back, my campaign activities during the maneuvers were probably violations of the Hatch Act, which prohibits active campaigning while on the job and campaign finance laws that prohibit the use of an employer’s assets to aid a political campaign. I am glad the statute of limitations has run. There was no coronavirus in North Carolina that summer but, thanks to the Aumans, I picked up another virus, the political bug, and that virus has stuck with me to this day.
