Pig Pickin’ on track to go the distance Members of the Woman’s Club of Southwest Guilford have worked diligently making decorations for the upcoming Derby Days: Hats and Hogs Pig Pickin’ to be held in Jamestown Oct. 9 from 7-11 p.m. “We had the idea for this theme and decorations last year,” said Laura Gulledge, president of the Woman’s Club, “but due to the pandemic we switched to Safe at Home with a drive-thru

We saved the derby theme for the 2021 fundraiser.” The most recent crafting session to create the look and feel of an authentic Kentucky Derby involved large paper rosettes, which will be displayed at the event along with other derby décor. The annual Pig Pickin’ is a fundraiser for Family Service of the Piedmont, which serves more than 19,000 clients who deal with issues of domestic violence, child abuse, mental health and financial stability. Jamestown teen arrested after school threats By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com It only took six hours for the High Point Police and Guilford County Sheriff’s Office to arrest Kayshawn Williams for social media posts threatening several area schools. High Point Police Capt. Curtis Cheeks spoke to reporters Sept. 21 following Williams’ arrest earlier that morning. “Approximately 7 p.m. last night we began receiving numerous tips through Crime Stoppers from parents, teachers, community members and students about threats of violence to High Point schools, [and others] in Guilford County on the

planning board approves Comprehensive plan By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com With little discussion, the Jamestown Planning Board approved the 2021 Comprehensive Plan at a special called meeting Sept. 20. The Board unanimously recommended the Plan be sent to the Town Council for final approval, which is expected to be in October. Vagn Hansen, of Benchmark Planning told the Planning Board – several of whom were on the steering committee for the plan – of the nearly two-year process to receive citizen and committee input on the plan. Parking will be available at Jamestown United Methodist Church and guests will be shuttled to the location. “We will be following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for the outdoor Jamestown Pig Pickin’,” said Claudia Perez. “We are encouraging attendees to wear a mask and to practice social distancing and good hygiene through hand

washing/sanitizing.” Tables at the event will be spaced out, and there will be hand-sanitizing stations available to help guests follow protocol. “The amazing Jamestown Pig Pickin’ committee and the Family Service of the Piedmont staff have worked very hard this year to go forward with this event safely,” said Mark Whitesell, event chair. Council approves annexation investigation for Johnson property By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council unanimously approved a resolution directing the town clerk to investigate the former Johnson farm property for possible annexation. D.R. Horton, Inc., the new owner, filed a petition Sept. 2. The former owner, Diamondback Investment Group, withdrew their annexation petition earlier this year after the Town Council rejected plans submitted for development of that property. Diamondback had submitted a petition in August 2020 and the petition was approved in September of that year. However, even though Town Clerk Katie Weiner found the property to conform to annexation criteria at that time, the process must be repeated since there is now a new owner. D.R. Horton also received a waiver of Section 5.36 of the Land Development Ordinance to allow the company to submit a rezoning request. That section states that a rezoning request for the same property could not be considered within 12 months, which began Jan. 20, 2021, the date Diamondback’s rezoning request was denied. The intent is to prevent subsequent requests from applicants without some significant change to the request. Since Horton is the new owner, they cited the LDO section that states there could be exceptions see COUnCIL, PAGe 2

Genealogy Day highlights past and preservation By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Delving into history can have different meanings to different people. For some it is a study of the world, a nation or a state. For others, however, history takes on a more personal meaning – it is the study of their individual backgrounds. Instead of being considered historians, these individuals are called genealogists. The Jamestown Public Library is hosting a special Genealogy Day Oct. 2 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The event, which will be held on the front lawn, is open to everyone interested in seeking information on how to research their past or in learning how to preserve the past and present for the future. “A few years ago, we did a presentation at the library about genealogy that

It is really more like a genealogy fair.” Participants will have the opportunity to talk with

several experts in the field of genealogy who can give individual guidance on the subject. They will share different ways to search for and preserve one’s personal history. Among the experts will be Larry Cates from the Heritage Research Center at High Point Public Library,

Shawn Rodgers of the Historic Jamestown Society will discuss Quaker heritage and Dale Metz will demonstrate how to use Ancestry.com to research family backgrounds online. “I also like a site called Family Search,” Sue Metz said. It is free and has a wealth of information.” Everyone is welcome to attend the free event. In case of inclement weather, it will be held Oct. 9. “I think it will be fun and can help people get started (or continue) learning about their genealogy,” Metz said.

continued from front to this rule. Town Attorney Beth Koonce noted the waiver was appropriate in this situation. The developer has not submitted any plans to the Town at this time. Interim Town Manager Dave Treme reported that he had created an update to the town’s public records request following a sharp uptick in requests. Treme said there had been 35 requests since June and 83 percent of those were from the same person, who happens to have a High Point address. “This could be over 10,000 records,” Treme said, noting the Town did not have enough staff or other resources to honor those requests, which have created a backlog. The Council received a copy of both the current and proposed public records requests to review and discuss at the Oct. 19 meeting. Treme also reported that in fiscal year 2020-2021, the Town received $850,164.34 in sales tax revenue from the state. This is the highest amount in the past five years. The sales tax covers several types of tax. In other business: • Eddie Oakley was honored for his service as a member of the Planning Board. Sweep on Sept. 18. At the Litter Sweep, 31 volunteers collected 37 bags of trash. Greeson said anyone could participate on their own by requesting supplies from Town Hall. • Treme received Council approval of the following vision statement for the Town: Jamestown will be a thriving community with strong roots in our history. One dedicated to a high quality of life for residents of all ages, including: recreation, education, and supporting businesses. A community of clean, beautiful, and safe surroundings and welcoming neighborhoods where everyone can feel at home.” • Jane Payne was appointed to serve as a member of the Planning Board and Pam Burgess was appointed alternate. • Treme received unanimous approval of the creation of a new position in Jamestown, that of Accounting Specialist. This person will help with various accounting tasks and payroll. • The Council set a public hearing date for their Oct. 19 meeting to consider the update to the Comprehensive Plan. A public hearing on amendments to the Land Development Ordinance will be Nov. 16. • Councilmember Martha Wolfe reported that the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) has approved the NCDOT Bike and Planning Grant Initiative for the Town. Wolfe also reported that the East Main Street sidewalk project should be completed soon.

Letter to the Editor

I do not approve of the negativity or the attempts to manipulate Jamestown. There is an effort being made to spread misinformation and to confuse people. There are a few individuals that are receiving information from Robert Fredrick to post or email out. It is destructive and it should stop. It looks like Fredrick is running for mayor and is trying to manipulate things for his own benefit regardless of if it is hurting the town. — Nick Anderson

plan

continued from front management workshops were part of the process. “A comprehensive plan, or land use plan, is primarily a guide for future development, capital investments and growth management decisions for the next decade,” Hansen said. “It sets forth the ‘blueprint’ for the future of Jamestown, providing a clear vision and guiding principles.” The Plan encompasses the corporate limits as well as the extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) of the town. A future land use map divides the area into 14 distinct land use categories: Town Center, Commercial Corridor, West Main Street, Business Park, Industrial, Mill District, Campus, Mixed Use, Town Residential, Suburban Residential, Deep River Residential, Estate Residential, Parks and Open Space and Mackay-Guilford, which is the former Johnson farm property. These divisions will help make land use and development decisions. All zoning

changes and zoning ordinance amendments must comply with the Comprehensive Plan. During the development of the Plan, the steering committee crafted a new vision statement for the future of the town. Hansen said the final line sums it up: “Moving forward, we will continue to seek excellence in all that we do as we build a community that everyone is proud to call home.” Included in the new Plan are 13 guiding principles that the Town should follow while considering future land use. The Planning Board also unanimously approved updates to the body’s Rules of Procedure. An anticipated discussion and vote regarding updates to the Land Development Ordinance was postponed until Nov. 8. The updates relate to nuisance abatement, the property management code, the minimum housing code and sign regulations.

serve the High Point area. “Approximately 11 p.m., investigators identified Kayshawn Williams, who is a current student at Southwest High School, as a suspect in this investigation.” Since Williams, 18, lives in the new Magnolia on Main development in Jamestown, just inside town limits, High Point Police contacted the Sheriff’s Office, which services Jamestown, for assistance. Williams was taken into custody at his home at 1:30 a.m. Sept. 22 and charged. This charge stemmed from a previous traffic charge and failure to appear against Williams earlier in September. “[These are] minor charges compared to felony fake report of violence on education property,” Cheek said. Williams admitted to making the

threats and received a $250,000 secure bond. “Pictures on the post featured firearms ranging from a pistol to rifles,” he said, but added no firearms were found at the residence. He believes the pictures were taken from Internet websites. Cheek does not believe the incident was gang related. “We believe this was an incident that was a personality conflict between Mr. Williams and some unidentified students,” he said. “As of now we have no further concerns with the safety of our students in our High Point schools.” Mike Richey, executive director of emergency management for Guilford County Schools stressed the importance of “see something, say something” to the right persons if anyone sees suspicious activity. “Last night was a perfect example

of, “’you see something, say something,’” echoed High Point Police Chief Travis Stroud. “We got some actionable intelligence that was forwarded to us by community members. “For all intents and purposes, we prevented a school shooting. It comes down to that.” “There are consequences to filing a false report, making a false claim or making a threat to schools,” Richey said. High Point Police increased police presence at their schools for classes on Sept. 22. The threats by Williams came just three weeks after the fatal shooting at Mt. Tabor High School in WinstonSalem. “That was a wake-up call for us,” Stroud said.

Queenpins (R) — We can stop complaining that there are no unique ideas for movies and everything is a remake. This based-on-a-true-story comedy starring Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste is all about the intriguing and exciting world of extreme couponing! But not just everyday couponing, the plot soon delves into a multi-million-dollar counterfeit coupon scam started by two best friends who cheated corporations and attempted to pad the pockets of fellow budget-conscious housewives. The Problem With Jon Stewart – Six years after vacating his host position on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart is making a return

to television. Some may question if we really need another nighttime political and social commentary show. The answer is a resounding YES, because it’s Jon Stewart. In this new series, each hourlong episode will focus on a single topic, with new episodes airing every two weeks. In addition to wellknown current affairs, topics will also include advocacy work on which Stewart has focused his attention over the past years while he was out of the spotlight. But after that impressive rise came the inevitable fall of both product quality and customer satisfaction. But who was to blame? Breakfast boats make brunch a breeze By PaTTI dIaMOnd DIVAS ON A DIMe

You know why we love brunch dishes so much? Because they’re so versatile. They work for breakfast, brunch, lunch or breakfast-for-dinner. Also, most are easy to prepare and very inexpensive, making them perfect for stress-free entertaining or a lazy Sunday at home. This breakfast-boat technique is especially drool worthy. If French toast and quiche had a love child it’d be a breakfast boat. You’re basically baking a quiche inside a loaf of bread. Along with the salty, savory sausage, the eggs soak into the bread as it bakes, making a creamy custard while the bread crust gets all crispity-crunchity. It’s just crazy delicious. It smells amazing as it cooks and looks gorgeously rustic on a platter.

As with many ideas I share through Divas On a Dime, this is an adaptable technique rather than a single recipe. You can adjust the ingredients to suit your family’s taste, dietary requirements and, most importantly, your budget. A couple of things to know before you make this recipe, the sizes and shapes of bread loaves vary greatly. This makes it difficult to offer exact quantities to fill your loaf or give an absolute baking time. You can use any kind of unsliced loaf (French bread, whole wheat, Italian bread) as long as the crust is, well ... crusty. Dayold is preferable because it better absorbs the eggs, is less likely to leak and is super affordable. If you fill your loaf with the egg mixture and it looks skimpy, add a couple more eggs. see BRUnCH, PAGe 8

Faux-leather vase shows off fall finds By dOnna eRICKsOn DONNA'S DAY: CreAtIVe FAMILY FUN “The leaves are definitely turning in New Hampshire,” friend Judy Barlow reported to me this week in an e-mail, “and my three kids are always the first to point out the beautiful reds and golds in our neighborhood. But to the kids, it’s not really an appreciation of nature — it’s more a signal that their favorite holiday is coming (Halloween) and their favorite season (winter) is just around the corner. “We take them for lots of hikes in the woods at this time of year,” she wrote. “They collect the most beautiful leaves, and then we iron them between two sheets of wax paper to preserve them. Or they build fairy houses in the woods with leaves and twigs (dead materials only), and we check back later to see if any ‘fairies’ have visited.” If you are as inspired as I was by Judy’s description of fall in New England, turn a new leaf on your family activities this week and enjoy the unparalleled entertainment autumn brings. Husband is always tired By KeITH ROaCH, M.d. tO YOUr GOOD HeALtH DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is tired all the time. He functions, but frequently has to sit to recoup his energy, even after a shower. He is diabetic and has been for over 10 years. He does not take insulin and manages to keep his A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs 207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 75 years old. His bloodwork always comes back normal, and a nuclear stress test came back negative. We have discussed this chronic fatigue with our family doctor. His only explanation is possibly low testosterone (the low end of normal). We know that some if not all of his medications list fatigue as a side effect, but we cannot persuade our doctor to do further tests. My husband does have an appointment with a cardiologist in May for a consultation and any suggestions, and also a checkup in six months with our family doctor. My concern is his medications and the fact that they are generic. I have read many stories about generic drugs and problems with their effectiveness. — J.C. DEAR J.C.: Fatigue, which is the

sensation of feeling tired, is a nonspecific symptom and a complaint that’s commonly heard by general doctors. It can be related to many diseases, as disparate as multiple sclerosis to heart failure, anemia to depression, and chronic infection to sleep disturbances. However, your husband notes a severe intolerance to exertion, which makes me suspect systemic exertion intolerance disorder, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and having worse symptoms with standing also go along with this diagnosis. There is yet no lab test for confirmation. The diagnosis is made after considering other causes, and testing for those that make sense after a careful history and exam. Diabetes, when not well controlled, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m not so concerned with generic medications as I am about too many or the wrong ones, so a careful review of medications is appropriate. I have previously recommended a graded exercise program for this condition; however, the study that led to this recommendation had several significant see TIRed, PAGe 8

continued from page 7 issues; many people will actually have worsening of their post-exercise fatigue, so exercise must be used very cautiously and on an individualized basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy has had some benefit, but we desperately need better treatments. DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you said that using peroxide in the ear is a bad home remedy. Would you please expand on this subject? My children grew up with me using

peroxide to clean excessive wax from their ears, and they now use the same remedy on my grandchildren. ANSWER: Most earwax does not need to be removed. It should be removed only when there are symptoms (such as poor hearing, ear pressure or pain, and sometimes itchiness or dizziness), and when it is clear that the symptoms are coming from excess earwax. This requires a look in the ear, since similar symptoms may come from infection. Hydrogen peroxide is too

harsh to put on skin. Doctors may use it to irrigate the ear canal while looking into the ear, but it is diluted, usually 1:10. Over-the-counter earwax preparations, such as carbamide peroxide, may also be recommended once the diagnosis is clear.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. ©2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

continued from page 7 SAUSAGE AND VEGGIE BREAKFAST BOAT Yield: 4 to 6 servings Prep: 20 minutes Bake: 35 to 45 minutes Serving breakfast in a bread boat is fun and a major way to upgrade your eggs for the cost of a loaf of day-old bread. 1 (16 ounce) loaf French bread 1 pound breakfast sausage 2 cups mixed vegetables, such as onion and bell peppers 8 eggs 1/4 cup half-and-half 1 cup shredded cheese — cheddar or your favorite 1. Preheat oven to 375 F degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil. 2. Place the whole bread loaf, upside down, on the sheet. Place it in the oven for 10 minutes to lightly toast the exterior of the bread, set aside. 3. Meanwhile, in a skillet, cook and crumble the sausage until no longer pink. 4. Next, add 2 cups of veggies to the sausage, and saute until soft. (I used 1/2 cup each of diced onion, red pepper, green pepper and sliced mushrooms.) Allow most of the liquid from the veggies to cook out, so the mixture isn’t wet. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. 5. Whisk together eggs and half-and-half until well-combined.

6. Using a serrated bread knife, horizontally slice the top inch from the loaf of bread. Scoop out most of the center of the bread. Keep at least an inch away from the sides to avoid damaging the outer crust. (Make breadcrumbs with the bread you remove.) 7. Spoon the sausage and veggie mixture into the bread, distributing evenly, and top with the cheese. Slowly, pour the egg mixture over the sausage and let it percolate through toward the bottom. 8. Bake immediately for 25 to 45 minutes. It’s done when the internal temperature reaches 160 F. TIP: For variety, swap out different meats, vegetables and cheeses to vary the flavor. If you have about 4 cups of total “goodies,” proceed with the recipe as directed. Here are some more ideas: Quiche Lorraine — bacon, onion and Swiss cheese. Tex-Mex — taco-seasoned hamburger, green chili peppers and pepper-jack cheese. Italian — Italian sausage, peppers, onion and mozzarella.
