Hemp store opens in Jamestown By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com It seems they’re popping up everywhere overnight, although not as fast, perhaps, as video sweepstakes a few years ago and vape stores in the last couple of years. While these last two have a recreational value, hemp stores claim to have a positive physical value. Jamestown is the home of one hemp store, HEMP+ at 5812 Gate City Boulevard. Abdul Abas is the owner and opened the store in August. He said the spacious store, located between the ABC store and Posh, near Mackay Road, is a perfect location for his store, which features
CBD and Kratom products. “It’s a great neighborhood and I think we can really get established here and leave an impact,” he said. He pointed to the Sedgefield and Adams Farm developments nearby as well as the new Publix store, which will open soon. “It’s a prime location.” Hemp and marijuana are essentially the same plant, cannabis, he said, and CBD (cannabidiol), which helps with pain, stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, etc., is found inside the hemp flower Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is a chemical in marijuana that targets Photos by Carol Brooks and binds to certain receptors in (Above) Oils (tinctures) are the the brain to give you a high. It seems to be the buzzword these days. CBD oil. And it’s popping up everywhere. CBD oil, or cannabidiol oil, comes from the cannabis plant. It is touted to reduce chronic pain and be good for everything from anxiety to sleep disorders to digestive problems to aches to acne to heart and eye health to multiple sclerosis and even cancer. CBD is extracted from both hemp and marijuana, but mostly from hemp. Hemp is a form of the cannabis plant that has a very low percentage of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, a chemical in marijuana that gives you a high. CBD will not get you high. The maximum amount of THC legally allowed in CBD products is 0.3 percent. Hemp is used to produce food, rope, clothing, paper, housing material and more.
Hemp and marijuana are treated differently under the law. Hemp is no longer an illegal substance while marijuana is still an illegal controlled substance. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the list of banned substances and more than half of all U.S. states now allow marijuana for medicinal purposes, but not North Carolina. Some of these allow it for recreational use, again, not North Carolina. In these states, CBD products can be made from marijuana, therefore, these products would have a higher concentration of the psychotropic drug THC. In North Carolina many believe that marijuana for medicinal purposes and recreational use will soon become legal. The Drug Enforcement Agency still views CBD as a banned substance and therefore doesn’t regulate it. Anyone can sell a product called CBD oil – but see cbd, page 2
Music at Mendenhall to benefit the Homeplace Each fall since 2015, Mendenhall Homeplace in Jamestown has been the location of Bluegrass musical programs with that certain toe-tapping, hand-clapping style. This year, however, the genre of music has changed a bit. “It is typically called old-time music,” said Alan Teichman, a Jamestown resident and member of The Glenwood Choppers. “It is an older form of traditional
Appalachian music.” The Glenwood Choppers will be performing Sept. 28 at the Homeplace during the Music at Mendenhall event. In addition to Teichman, who plays guitar and harmonica, other musicians in the group include Molly Stouten, playing lead on fiddle, and Randy Johnson on banjo. All three enjoy singing and share the vocals, often harmonizing as they sing the old-time songs. Teichman and Stouten played music together in the
1970s in New York. After Teichman and his family moved to the High Point area in 1981 and Stouten and her family moved to the Greensboro area in 1990, the two reconnected to play the music they both enjoy. Johnson joined the group and it became The Glenwood Choppers. When available, the trio plays at an outdoor curb market in Glenwood on Thursdays. “The style of music we play is pretty popular,” Teichman said. “During the see music, page 2

Nothing to get you criminally charged or high. That’s the one that alters your brain.” He did mention that if a product is being used constantly, traces of THC could show up in a drug test but normally would not show up. “When you smoke pot, people feel mellow, chill and they don’t really feel their pain. That’s what happens with hemp flower and CBD, except it doesn’t get you high. It doesn’t treat any causes, but it’s a great way to get off pain medication and slowly go into more natural things. “CBD actually helps me personally,” he added about wanting to get into the business. “It really helps people and I want to bring light to that issue. “You have a lot of stigma where people think hemp is connected to THC and marijuana. I want to alleviate that tension you have with CBD.” Another product is Kratom, the hemp flower sold in an edible format like tablets and powder form. Abas said that is a great way to get the entire benefit of the CBD flower without having to smoke it. Since he’s only been open a few weeks, Abas said he is still not fully stocked and has more products and display cases coming. “Right now we’re taking suggestions to see what the

The tinctures (oils) are the most popular products so far. “They help the most, I believe,” Abas said. “They get into your system quickest and are longest lasting.” It’s not a inexpensive product but some products come in different sizes, or amounts of milligrams. Abas said his 300 mg oils average $39.99 and the 600 mg bottles are $69.99. Gummies are less than $10 a pack. Vape pens are $9.99 with the 1,000 mg refillable cartridge running $13.99. Water is $2.99. Hemp products with CBD come in oils (tinctures), gummies, lollipops, oral sprays, creams, capsules, protein shakes, taffy, water, vape pen flavors, bath bombs, sunscreen, water and even pet treats. “It’s the most natural of ways to get the benefits ibuprofen could offer, with fewer pills,” he said. Everything is natural. It’s not made in a lab. The plant grows and we’re using the plant. It’s lab tested, of course.” Many people find a hemp product that works best for them and stay with that one product exclusively but others use several different products during the day. “It’s natural, so there isn’t anything you could mix and be potentially harmful,” Abas said of using more than one product. Abas agreed that people

there may not be any CBD oil in the product. A 2017 paper by the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that nearly 70 percent of all CBD products sold online do not contain the amount of CBD stated on the label. This past June, the North Carolina Senate passed the North Carolina Farm Bill of 2019 (Senate Bill 315) officially authorizing and regulating statewide hemp farming. However, in July, lawmakers were still debating whether smokable hemp should be banned. Most authorities recommend checking with a doctor before using CBD. CBD has known serious side effects but could cause fatigue, diarrhea, changes in appetite and weight loss. It could also interact with some medications. The jury is still out on what doctors think about CBD. While the products could be treated like supplements or vitamins, some doctors recommend them, some are non-committal. Most doctors believe there has not been enough research on CBD and very little government regulation. “Scientists have been studying other constituents in the marijuana plant beside THC, and there has been an emerging interest in the medical community for a while,” said Ryan McLaughlin, PhD, assistant professor of integrative physiology and neuroscience at Washington State University in Pullman, in an undated article in Reader’s Digest. “Scientists have identified a number of receptors in the nervous system where CBD acts,” said Orrin Devinsky, MD, professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry at NYU Langone in the same article. “It’s established that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and can increase activity at some serotonin [the feel-good neurotransmitter] receptors.”

The New York Times should stop whinning BY RICH LOWRY The New York Times, an organization devoted to gathering and publishing information, doesn’t want people to gather or publish information inconvenient to it. A group of Trump-supporting operatives has been finding and archiving old social media postings of Times employees and other journalists for use in the ongoing brawl between the president and the press. There’s no indication that this is dumpster diving rather than an effort to scour readily available sources for stupid, embarrassing or offensive things that journalists have said publicly under their own power. The Times broke the news of the campaign in an alarmed-sounding report. It related that “the material publicized so far, while in some cases stripped of context or presented in misleading ways, has proved authentic, and much of it has been professionally harmful to its targets.” It’s not clear what makes this different from what happens in our public life ... every ... single ... day. Headhunting based on past offenses, real and imagined, is the norm, indeed one of the left’s favored forms of ideological combat. Nonetheless, the press and its progressive allies act as though the First Amendment is being endangered if journalists apologize for past things they’ve written or — depending on the decisions of their own organizations — get cashiered for them. “The goal of this campaign is clearly to intimidate journalists from doing their job,” thundered Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger. A spokesman for CNN went further, saying that when government officials, “and those working on their behalf, threaten and retaliate against reporters as a means of suppression, it’s a clear abandonment of
democracy for something very dangerous.” This is the usual hysteria yoked to the usual foggy thinking. The First Amendment is an important protection of press freedom. Yet nothing in it protects members of the press from criticism, let alone criticism over things they have written. Such criticisms are exercises of free speech in response to other exercises of free speech — i.e., public debate. If the Times and others don’t like the weaponization of foolhardy and untoward social media postings, they can start pushing back against it across the board. The left-wing organization Media Matters for America exists to publicize (allegedly) controversial statements by conservative media figures toward the end of getting them fired or ushered off the air. If recirculating the past tweets of employees of liberal news organizations is undemocratic, why isn’t the work of Media Matters also dangerously authoritarian? The Times may say that it won’t be “intimidated” by pressure over past postings, but it has readily surrendered to such pressure from the left. The paper pulled the plug on its hiring of tech writer Quinn Norton last year when it emerged that she had tweeted offensive terms about gays and blacks, albeit sardonically. The hounding of conservatives isn’t considered beyond the pale; it’s considered sport. Much of the left would be rendered practically mute if it weren’t braying for people to be fired. I think it’s a bad idea for either side to rummage through old social media postings and writings looking for firing offenses. But the rules of this game were established by the left long ago. It should either change them — or stop whining. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Can toxin affect dogs like it does people? BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S corNer DeaR PaW’s coRNeR: My dog “Percy” loves to jump into the lake nearby for a swim every day, especially on a hot afternoon. But the last time we were at the shore, a neighbor said there was an algae warning and that dogs and people should stay out of the water. Percy has been in that lake all summer and hasn’t been affected. Would that algae really do anything to him? — Pet Dad in Texas DeaR Pet DaD: If you doubt your neighbor’s warning, check with the city or municipality that manages the lake to see if an algae advisory has been issued. Signs are often posted at boat ramps and swimming areas. There is at least one type of algae that is particularly harmful to pets. Bluegreen algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can build up around the shores of lakes and ponds where water does not
flow quickly — especially during the hottest months of summer. It’s not always visible, but when large amounts are present it may clump together and appear as a blue-green or “pea-soup”-like scum or foam. Cyanobacteria can be fatal to dogs because it can cause liver failure, and lifelong health problems if a dog survives the initial exposure. Dogs that ingest the bacteria can show symptoms within a few minutes — vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, breathing difficulties, confusion, seizures or collapse. Immediate treatment by a veterinarian is essential when symptoms appear. So, if you hear a warning about letting your dog go into a specific lake or pond, whether from a neighbor or an official, take it seriously. Keep Percy out of the water until the all-clear is given. Open in case of emergency BY ANGeLA SHeLF MeDeARIS KitcHeN diVa The past few years have produced some unusual weather. Whether you live in an area that has been hit with storm-related power outages or you just want to stock up for the times you’re unable to shop, creating an emergency pantry using canned goods as staples is a wise choice. First, start with a good quality product. Choose can goods that aren’t rusted, dented, scratched or bulging. Home-canned foods should only be made using research-tested procedures, equipment and recipes from sources such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture website. Here are some tips for creating, stocking and using an emergency pantry: canned Goods and Water: — Choose foods your family enjoys. Good options include canned beans, vegetables, fruit, breakfast cereal, peanut butter, pouches of fully cooked whole grains, nuts, whole-wheat crackers and
shelf-stable milk or plant milk (the kind sold in aseptic boxes in the grocery aisle). — When buying canned foods, choose low-sodium or no-salt-added products, and choose fruits packed in water or their own juice instead of syrup. — Store canned goods in a cool, dark, dry area away from furnaces, pipes and other places where temperature changes occur. Keep metal cans off the floor, because moisture may lead to rust. — Always use the FIFO (first-in, first-out) method when using foods from storage so that you use your oldest cans first. If you see that a can or jar has a broken seal or is rusting, bulging or denting, it should be discarded. If any food does not look or smell right, throw it out. — Keep at least 6 gallons of water per family member to be prepared for one week. Store water in airtight, food-grade storage containers. Replace water every six months.

Better to sleep on left side or right? BY KeITH ROACH, M.D. to Your good HealtH

I was in charge of taking meal tickets and handing out plates for an outdoor burger buffet lunch after a Family Fun Run event. Greeting all ages coming through the line, I was caught off guard when two girls looked like “one,” from the waist up anyway. Full of kidlike chatter and smiles, the cousins said they were so cold after running, they grabbed an adultsize long-sleeve T-shirt from one of the moms, stretched it over their heads and shimmied into it. Jane’s right hand came through the right sleeve, while Elouise’s left hand came through the other. Snug, warm and famished, they held a plate on each outstretched hand and tried to focus on serving each other burgers, buns, pickles, beans and fries. As they headed for a picnic table, they were giggling so hard, they soon became a crowd attraction trying to focus on walking in sync while balancing their heaping plates of food. Cooperation was the key. Engaging in simple family play, just for the fun of it, can happen anytime and almost anywhere. You might want to try the girls’ cozy and challenging T-shirt idea in your home by slipping one over two young kids and encouraging them to walk around from room to room. For older kids, go outside and challenge them to do an activity together, like bouncing a ball or raking leaves. Looking for more cooperative fun? Make dinnertime pizza prep a game. Here’s how: 1. Set bowls of pizza toppings side by side on your counter. The fun begins when the person responsible for assembling the pizza covers his eyes completely with a scarf or head-
DeaR DR. Roach: I am a man in my late 50s. I now am told to sleep on my right side and not my left side, because it’s better for the heart. However, my sinuses seem to open up and it’s easier to breathe lying on my left side. What, if anything, will happen if I sleep on my left side? Can it damage the heart permanently or lead to an early death? — M.N. DeaR M.N.: Most people can sleep in whatever position they find comfortable without any problem. However, there are a few instances in which sleeping on the left side may potentially cause problems. One is in people with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, in which several studies have shown that sleeping on the left side leads to slightly more breathing problems than sleeping on the right. However, in people who are treated, that should not be a problem. Pregnant women should sleep on the side. Although women have often been recommended to sleep on their left side, either side is fine for the baby. Left-sided sleeping may reduce swelling in the feet. People with known severe congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease and who habitually sleep on the left side have a small increase in death compared with back or right-side sleepers. However, my opinion is that the benefit is so small that comfort and quality of sleep is more important. Sharing one T-shirt, 8-year-old cousins Jane Humphreys and elouise Clark serve up lunch cooperatively. band. The other person gives directions. (Kids like to play this role.) 2. Instruct the pizza maker to roll out the dough, then hand him the ingredients, beginning with the tomato sauce. 3. Ask him to brush on the sauce, then continue by arranging and sprinkling toppings one by one. Since this is a cooperative effort, the person giving the instructions should guide the pizza maker verbally as he works. Don’t get the anchovies mixed up with the cheese! 4. However, I would look for a brand that is labeled “certified USP,” meaning it is tested for contaminants, and one that has a low vitamin A level (below 10,000 IU daily). You also might want one with high (450 mg or greater) EPA plus DPA (the most commonly recommended omega-3 fats). Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
