Outreach Center reopens its doors BY NormA B. deNNis freeLance Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com In 1969, when Jamestown Elementary School Principal Olin Jackson mentioned to Doris Berry that a child in his school needed shoes and could not afford them, it is unlikely either realized the impact the statement would have on the entire community for decades to come. Berry did not take the comment lightly, but immediately solicited help from the women’s circles at Jamestown United Methodist Church where she and Jackson were members. The groups began to collect clothing for children in need and were so successful they had no place to put everything. Businessman Bow Stafford allowed the use of his old office building on Main Street, which became the first official thrift store operated by the church. In 1970, the Methodist Men moved the garage of the old Bundy house to

the back of the church and renovated it for use as the Thrift Store. Houston Williams updated the building in 1991 and in 1996 – with the guidance of Williams and help from a wealth of volunteers – the church built a new, larger facility and renamed it the Jamestown United Methodist Church Outreach Thrift Center.

Comprehensive Plan draft available BY CArol BrooKs freeLance Writer cab1hp@gmail.com Work on an update to Jamestown’s Comprehensive Plan began over two years ago. Like many other things, the pandemic slowed progress. But there is a light at the end of that long tunnel. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee has viewed several working drafts of the Plan – meeting several times over the past weeks – in an attempt to finalize the document. Plans call for presenting a final version of the Comprehensive Plan to the Planning Board on Sept. 20 and to the Town Council Oct. 19. The future of a municipality is guided by a comprehensive plan. It provides direction about development decisions, often protecting valuable resources, shaping the appearance of the community and promoting economic development. A comprehensive plan steering committee is charged with determining what the town’s needs are and compiling the data into the final plan. Steering Committee members, residents both of the town and the extrater-

ritorial jurisdiction (ETJ), identified issues and concerns of the town and residents, developed a vision for the plan and set new goals and objectives. Members spoke to residents of their neighborhoods to get them involved in the planning of the Comprehensive Plan, by providing input and through several public meetings. “There aren’t a tremendous amount of differences based on the past Comprehensive Plan,” said Planning Director Matthew Johnson of the new version. Focus was placed on the former Johnson farm property, which has been given the designation MackayGuilford as a future land use category. It is the largest single undeveloped property in Jamestown’s planning jurisdiction. It is expected to experience significant development interest in the near future. Jamestown’s first comprehensive plan was published in 1964. It must have worked fine for the town, because there wasn’t an update until December 2007, 43 years after the original. The most recent version of the Plan is available at https://envisionjamestown. com.

From the beginning, volunteers from the church and the community have been the heart of the Outreach Thrift Center, in its conception, construction and operation. Closed since March of 2020 due to the pandemic, volunteers are once more preparing to open the Outreach Thrift Center at 711 Teague Place on Sept.

14. It will operate Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. “The Outreach Thrift Center offers several benefits to our community,” said board Photos by Norma B. Pop-up cookie business proves perfect fit for local entrepreneur BY NormA B. deNNis freeLance Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com Although the definition of popup retail, also known as pop-up shops or flash retailing, is opening short-term sales spaces before closing down, Amelia Cates hopes to continue her own version of a popup business well into the future. The Adams Farm resident calls her business Very Maggie Cookies and, of course, cookies are her specialty. “I consider them Levain-style cookies, similar to those sold in the famous bakery in New York,” Cates said. “Each weighs at least 5 ounces and are heat sealed to keep them fresh longer. They will last 5-10 days and can be frozen up to three months. “I like them warm. You can heat them in the oven for several minutes or in the microwave for 8-10 seconds.” Cates’ business is named for her mother, whom she said was a good seamstress and baker, among other things. Cates migrated through a couple of endeavors before settling on baking cookies. She had started an see CooKie, page 2

What is your vision for the Johnson property? here’s your chance to talk The Town of Jamestown has engaged a community planner, Seth Harry, to advocate for and work with the community to create a master plan and design guidelines for the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. The development of this 467-acre property will greatly impact the future of the town. Remembering 9∙ ∙01 Survivor recalls Sept. 11 attack BY CArol BrooKs freeLance Writer cab1hp@gmail.com

(This article originally ran in the Jamestown News Sept. 8, 2010.) On Sept. 11, Tad Tadlock won’t be glued to the television watching recaps, nor will he be reading about the 2001 terrorist attacks or attending memorial services. He doesn’t need reminders. He was there. And except for a few names, he can still remember every detail. “It’s like a loop film in my head. It’s there in front of me. Will that

ever leave me? I don’t think it will.” On that fateful day in 2001 he was attending a rookie class for his employer, Morgan Stanley on the 61st floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York City. “I was supposed to be there for six weeks,” Tadlock recalled. Even though he had once worked in the city for five years, he and some friends planned to visit the tower’s observation deck on Tuesday evening to get a view of their surroundings. “Little did we know, there

(This article originally ran in the Jamestown News Sept. 7, 2011.) Like everyone else on that Tuesday morning 20 years ago, David Griffin, Jr. was glued to the television set at his office, watching as events unfolded in New York City after planes struck the World Trade Center. Little did he know that within a few days he would be in charge of the demolition of the World Trade Centers. “As an American, you want to help,” he recalled. “The more I watched on TV, (I realized) it was a demolition job. That’s what we do.” Griffin is president of D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company on Hilltop Road in Greensboro. “I decided Wednesday night that I was going up there the next day to see what I could find out,” he said. “A lot of people thought I was crazy. I’d never worked in New York (City) and we didn’t have any contacts there.” The 43-year-old Jamestown resident, his wife Donna, and their three children, including 10- and 12-year old girls and eight-month-old son, drove up to New York City on Thursday. “My wife said, ‘I don’t want you to go by yourself,’” he remembered.

cars when they arrive.” Cates notes her cookies are special because they originate from a small local business. She currently features five types including chocolate chip-walnut, birthday cake, marshmallow chocolate crunch, pumpkin spice and dark chocolate with candy in the middle. From October to December, orders may be placed three times a month. As the fall and winter holidays approach she will include addition flavors such as apple cobber, pecan pie, cranberry and gingerbread. “As soon as Pumpkin Spice Oreos come out, I will have special cookies stuffed with them,” Cates said. “The cookies make unique desserts for family gatherings, tailgate parties, or as gifts to friends and business clients. “This pop-up business works for me. I hope people will try the cookies and love them.” The last day to place an order this month is Sept. 22 with pickup scheduled for Sept. 23. Cates may be contacted at 336-580-7060 or through her Instagram, #@verymaggiecookies.

At the first police barricade) I just walked through. My theory is that 85 percent of the time, if you act like you know what’s going on, you can skate through a lot of situations.” It wasn’t as easy getting through the next barricade, however. The U.S. Army was standing patrol with machine guns and wouldn’t let Griffin by without a site pass. ing to donate slightly used items no longer needed. This allows us to offer quality items at minimal prices in a way that maintains the dignity of our customers and uplifts the spirits of our volunteers. All proceeds are then returned to the community through donations to non-profit organizations and our schools. “We expect to grow back to what we did before the pandemic,” he added. The Board of Directors, which currently oversees the Outreach Thrift Center, has used the time the center was closed to upgrade the building, including power washing, painting and installing equipment to improve air circulation. They also purchased a fogger that can be used to disinfect the inside of the building and its contents. “It has been a big process to get ready to reopen,” said Sue Moore, board member.

“We excepted donations for two weeks in June to fill in needed items.” The JUMC Outreach Thrift Center carries clothing, jewelry, household items such as glassware, dishes, linens and comforters, and children’s books and toys. “We can no longer accept lamps, pictures and CDs,” Moore explained. “We do not have room. If we get items we cannot use, we share them with other groups. “Our main purpose is to help people, with a focus on children, and we are still supporting children at Jamestown Elementary. We provide free clothing if there is a need, help those with financial problems and donate to charities.” Donations to the Outreach Center may be brought to the Center during the hours it is open.

Couch Theatre BY rACHel rose Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. (TV-PG) — As the trend of TV reboots continues, we now have this updated version of the early ‘90s sitcom “Doogie Howser, M.D.” This time around the teenaged physician is a girl who’s balancing hospital rounds with time off surfing with friends in her home state of Hawaii. The 10-episode series stars 17-year-old Peyton Elizabeth Lee (who isn’t actually Hawaiian, so slight casting fail there). The original theme song now played on ukulele is a nice nostalgic touch. (Disney+)

Momoa plays Ray Cooper, a Pittsburgh blue-collar worker who loses his young wife to cancer. Blaming a pharmaceutical company’s CEO for his wife’s death after the company pulls a life-saving medication from the market, Ray vows vengeance against him. His teenaged daughter, Rachel, insinuates herself into Ray’s violent attacks, and the two soon find themselves fleeing authorities. Fair warning, there are lots of graphic fight scenes that are painful to watch. But a plot twist changes the whole dynamic of the film, so you may end up watching it twice. (Netflix)

First Wives Club (TV14) — This BET original series isn’t really a reboot of the hugely successful 1996 movie, it’s more like a reinterpretation of it in episodic form. It still focuses on three long-time friends who all find themselves divorcing their cheating or otherwise dubious husbands at the same time, but that’s where the similarities end. The jokes fall flat and the writing is uninspiring. Singer Jill Scott is dynamic, but her talents are underutilized here. (BET+) In Case You Missed It I Don’t Like Mondays (NR) — This 2006 documentary tells the story of 16-year-old Brenda Spencer, who perpetrated America’s first mass school

shooting. The 1979 tragedy inspired the pop song “I Don’t Like Mondays” by the Boomtown Rats, written for Spencer’s stated reason for why she began shooting that morning in San Diego. The film covers events up to and including her 2005 parole hearing, mostly through interviews with childhood survivors of the event, family members of those killed, police on scene and her own parents. What is unexpected is the shocking number of times that Spencer was repeatedly failed by adults who could have changed the course of her life, and how the public’s focus on her statement overshadowed the full story. wouldn’t be an observation deck by Tuesday night.” Tadlock recalled that, during a break, he looked out a window on the south side of the tower, a view showing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. He believes the time must have been around 8:45 a.m. Suddenly he saw scores of 8 1/2 x 11 paper flying through the air. “I lived in New York City for five years, but I have never seen a ticker tape parade like that,” he recalled thinking. Just then, his friend Chris said that something terrible had happened in the north tower. “We need to get out,” Chris said. Leaving their bags and cell phones in the conference room, the men joined thousands of others crowding the stairwells of the South Tower. “A lot of people were on cell phones but only one guy was panicking, pushing his way down. “We were wondering what happened and thought a small commuter plane accidentally hit the first tower.” Tadlock said it was slow moving down the stairs but building marshals had been trained in evacuation procedures following the 1993 bombing. He made it down to the 43rd floor. “It came over the PA that there had been an accident

on the North Tower but that it was under control.” Elevators began operating again and everyone was allowed to return. While most people continued down to the ground, Tadlock said he did something stupid – he went back for his cell phone. The elevator Tadlock used was on the north side of the South Tower, facing the North Tower. When he arrived back on the 61st floor, he looked out the window. And saw what had happened. He described the horror of the next few moments in detail so graphic that, even now, it was difficult for him to finish without choking up. “I told Chris, ‘Let’s get out of here.’” Just then, the second plane hit their building between the 77th and 85th floors. “I don’t remember hearing the sound, but (the building shook) like a buggy whip.” Tadlock made a back-and-forth whip-like motion with his arm indicating how the building rocked. “(I thought), ‘This is no accident. We’re under attack – but by who? Who would attack us?” The men’s earlier pristine view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island was now obscured by a

bright orange glow. They started back down the stairs. “I graduated from N.C. State in engineering and knew stairwells were the safest place.” But this time, Tadlock noticed cracks in the walls that weren’t there before and there was more nervousness from the others trying to escape. Firemen were coming up the stairs as the throng was going down. “But there was no panic. Most of the people knew they needed to evacuate. Everyone was so wonderful, helping each other.” Tadlock admitted he must have been somewhat in shock. He still had his suit coat on and felt cold. But after someone commented that he must be used to the heat in the building, being from the South, he felt the heat and broke out in a sweat. “The main thing that kept me going was the 23rd Psalm. I kept repeating, ‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.’ When I was cold, I felt the presence of the angels and Jesus and God. “I never had any fear of dying in the building. I knew I’d get out.” By the time he got to the mezzanine, shops there had already been looted. Once he got out of the building, he started walk-

ing. Tadlock said he wanted to go to the river where it was open. If the building went down, he figured he could jump into the river to escape debris. After walking several blocks away from the World Trade Center, Tadlock realized he needed to go back to help. “I should be back there helping people,” he recalled. “But I didn’t know what I was going to do.” But at that moment, the South Tower – the one he had been in – began falling. Tadlock said the sky turned black, like the hoard of locust, in the Bible, blocking the sun. He started running away again, managing to duck into a hotel lobby to escape the dust but he didn’t stay long. A very pregnant woman needed assistance so he helped her to an aide station along the East River. The two covered their faces with towels to keep out the dust. “I still have that towel. Some day I’ll take it back.” Tadlock’s hotel was about four miles from the towers, so he decided to walk back. “When I got to 16th or 18th street, I could hear the oohs and ahhs. The first tower was coming down. “One tooth was missing (from the skyline), then the other one went down. “I went to a little park and just boohooed. Then someone joined me and we patted each other on the leg and shoulder.” The attacks began about 8:46 a.m. but Tadlock was not able to reach his wife Barbara until after 1 p.m. “I (had) hoped my family wasn’t looking at this on television. I was wrong.” Being afraid his younger daughter would see it on TV at school at High Point Andrews, his wife picked her up from school. She didn’t know her father was in the WTC. On Thursday, two days after the attack, Tadlock was able to hitch a ride home with the father of one of another daughter’s friends. “We were talking the whole way. It seemed like it took just two hours to get to North Carolina.” Today, the Tadlock family has immersed themselves in Jamestown United Methodist Church, which they joined about six years ago. Tadlock even sings in the choir. He feels his experience has led to a deeper religious commitment. Tad Tadlock will probably spend this Saturday in the warmth of his family and close friends. He has not been back to New York City since.

through the barricades and down the street. “It was the longest three blocks,” he recalled. “I never looked back, but I could feel like someone was going to grab me on the back of my neck.” Griffin said walking around the area “was one of the scarier times there because your adrenaline’s running. Not even my wife knew (exactly where I was). But I was wanting to help so bad.” During the drive from North Carolina, Griffin had worked the phone, calling everyone he knew in the construction industry who might have contacts in the city. He learned that Bovis Lend Lease had been awarded a $100 million emergency task contract, so he started looking for their area. Griffin discovered that many of the workers on-site were construction people, not demolition. They didn’t know the best way to remove dangerous debris for the search-andrescue operation. “They had been trying to take down a curtain wall buried into a debris pile that was hampering rescue operations, cutting it down on a crane a foot at a time from the top,” he recalled. “I said, ‘Why don’t we just cut it at the bottom and drop it like a tree. We can have it on the ground in five minutes.’” Officials agreed to his plan and seven minutes later, the curtain was on the ground. That night, Jim Abadie from Bovis called Griffin’s cell phone and offered to hire him as a demolition consultant for one or two weeks. Griffin accepted the assignment. “I went initially as an American but it turned into an American who knew something about demolition.” Later, when the multi-story curtain wall from Tower 2 needed to be removed, Griffin put in a bid for D.W. Griffin Wrecking – and got the job. “The top bid (up ‘til then) was $18 million and the job would take two months,” he said. “We thought we could pull it down … for $100,000 … in an hour.” Griffin planned to sway the wall with cables until the bolts sheared, weakening the structure. He gave the example of taking a drink can and wiggling it. The more the can is wiggled, the more it will go into fatigue and finally fail. Three days after D.W. Griffin Wrecking took down that wall, Michael Burton, deputy commissioner of the City of New York who was in charge of the project, asked if the company would be the City’s consultant, in charge of all demolition operations. Griffin had two hours to make a decision. “I called my wife, called my dad (the company founder), and got both of their blessings because I knew it would be a long-term commitment,” he said. “We signed up for the job and from that point forward we were in charge of all demolition operations.” Griffin stayed in New York City for seven months overseeing the operation, only coming home about 18 days in that period. The company stayed for 19 months. In all, 17,168,000 square feet of office and retail space totalling 1,700,000 tons of debris were removed. Griffin was able to complete the project nine months ahead of schedule and $400 million under budget. Griffin said it was the hardest project he had ever worked on and it affected him emotionally, physically and spiritually. However, it was also the opportunity of a lifetime – the largest demolition project that has ever been done in the world. “But at the same time, it’s the largest loss of life in American history,” he said. “I cried numerous times.” Each day, traveling from the apartment he rented, Griffin passed hundreds of signs and letters on walls and windows – makeshift memorials and appeals for information on a loved one. “It just broke your heart. At the same time, it would remind you of what you were there doing. It was an honor.” Although he was invited to the memorial service in New York City this year (2011), David Griffin, Jr. will stay close to home and attend the Station 1 service in Greensboro. Just like area resident Tad Tadlock (see related story) who was actually in Tower 2 when it was hit, Griffin refrained from speaking of the most gruesome memories. But he is able to recall events in detail because he has spoken on the topic over 200 times in the past 10 years. Ask anyone of a certain age where they were when they heard John Kennedy had been shot and you’ll get an immediate response. It’s something burned into the memories of this country. The same holds true for Sept. 11, 2001. “9/11 is our generation’s Pearl Harbor – a life-changing event,” Griffin solemnly mused. “It’s something we’ll never forget.” Indeed, as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said of Pearl Harbor, it is “a date that will live in infamy.”
