Cycle I: The Cook, the Cabbage & The Knife — The Fridge: Site Analysis The home fridge, past, present, and future. Full of leftovers. the overcooked, undercooked, and the to-be-cooked. I gave myself 9 minutes to analyse, understand, and draw each item from my fridge, with 1 minute at the end to write ponderings and provocations. After the 10 minutes, the next item was to be drawn.

Cycle I: The Cook, the Cabbage & The Knife — Recipe Recipe. The Diagram A Recipe. A Pilgrimmage. It's mum's birthday. There will be a celebration. A tiramisù will be made but the only ingredient that we don't have at hand is mascarpone. There are few places in the local area to buy the Italian soft cheese. Common supermarkets occassionally have it in stock but it's often a gamble. I know of one place that reliably stocks it, 3km up the road. This project is a documentation of a path frequently walked, but infrequently observed. It is a documentation of first impressions and deep memories, of passers-by, and of the bypassed. It is a documentation of the quotidian. 3km. A short stroll. A long wander.

The Table The meal begins with a negotiation. A negotiation of space, of territory, of movement, of contact, of contamination. The table exists as a result of these acts of diplomacy.

Cycle II: The 5 Obstructions — Obstruction II: Wedge Me In

Cut, Inverse: Formal Gestures Diagram

Cut, Invert. No expectation of unity or harmony. In keeping with Shinohara’s generative process and philosophies for the House in Uehara, the house has been adapted to fit the constraints of its new location in Rathdowne St, Carlton. Cut in half and flipped on its head, the house is opened to the world and the natural enviroment. The house accepts its new bisected form, learning to live with its new architectural qualities just as the original houseowners learned to live among eyeheight columns. The house has been opened to the environment, welcoming it in. Or has the house been given permission to expand its domain?

Cycle II: The 5 Obstructions — Obstruction III: The Desecration The Tower of Shinohara The House may be a “Work of Art” but not everyone needs that. A focus on the minutae of artistic expression in a house turns away from the needs of the average person. With the population of Tokyo ever increasing, it is the role of housing to accomodate for the infinite complexity of its people: its families, individuals, and social structures. Aligning with the Metabolist focus on a central core for circulation and services, autonomy of the resident and a distinction between services and living, the project aims to give back power of occupation to the occupants. People make the architecture.

Cycle II: The 5 Obstructions — Obstruction IV: The Masterpiece Building upon the provocation of Obstruction III, Obstruction IV aims to document the stories of three occupants of the Tower. They live across multiple floors of the Tower, with neighbours anonymous to the scope of the project. They have all resided here for their own reasons. Either through occupation or intervention, each resident has manipulated and adapted the spaces they use to suit them. People have made the architecture.

Cycle III: Life In Between — The Midnight Sun Group Members: Hosna Eqbal Paul Newcomen Hoang Nguyen Ivelina Fukarova The Midnight Sun examines a world exposed to constant light. Focusing on a small neighbourhood on the side of a hill in Flowerdale, rural Victoria, the project speculates upon the social, cultural, environmental and architectural ramifications of a world without nighttime. The continuing history of the neighbourhood is told through a special edition of the local newspaper The Midnight Sun, commemorating local sites of excellence in cultural and environmental sustainability.
