Introducing: Allegaeon
T
hrough their lyrics of science and the universe, Colorado death metallers Allegaeon have slowly been building a reputation in the death metal circuit. Through three studio records the five piece have showcased absolutely excellent musicianship that highlights the best attributes technical death metal has to offer. 2008’s Fragments of Form and Function sets the tone for what fans can expect; crushing breakdowns, frantic solos and vocals that roar above the destructive sound. The God Particle is a particular highlight that showcases Allegaeon at

their very best; sensational solos and riffs that replicate a rollercoaster. Four years on from their debut effort, the band released their second full length record entitled Formshifter. Progressing the band musically with a bigger focus on intricate guitar play it led Allegaeon to bigger and better things. The band embarked on several successful tours across the United States in support for that record and continued to amaze with their flourishing skills in technical death metal. Yet it was the release of last year’s Elements of the Infinite that has sent the band into the stratosphere. The band’s
third record was critically acclaimed by critics due to the sheer excellent musicianship and maturity the band have showcased in their career to date. Following from that release the band have toured with some of metal’s best death metal bands; from Job For A Cowboy to Chimaira. Despite the band never touring Europe, there is the sense that Allegaeon are about to become metal’s next big thing. For people who crave technicality fused with brutality, then Allegaeon is your perfect match.

Slipknot’s Mick Thomson Stabbed in the head!
S
lipknot have always been a band that seem to embrace controversy in their brutal assualt of their explosive sound.
The band’s guitarist, Mick Thomson, has been hospitalised following a knife fight with his brother, Andrew, that left both Mick and Andrew with serious injuries including a stab wound to the back of Mick’s head. The incident took place at Mick’s home in Iowa and it is believed that both men were under the influence of alcohol as the altercation unfolded. Whilst both men sustained injuries that required medical attention it is confirmed that the injuries were not deemed life threatening by officials.
this incident will not affect their current plans for touring; a massive North American tour in April with hardcore giants Hatebreed. The band released their fifth studio record, 5: The Grey Chapter, last year and have only recently completed a massive UK tour with Korn and King 810. Slipknot are set to headline the Friday night at this year’s Download Festival.
This is not the first time that Slipknot have been involved in a major news story; the tragic passing of bass player, Paul Gray, in 2010 stunned the alternative world. Slipknot have confirmed that www.distortedsound.wordpress.com

Insights from the industry Interviews and insights with some of the music industry’s key figures
Dante Bonutto
Katie Needham
Dante Bonutto is a legend in rock journalism having worked on music magazines like Record Mirror and Kerrang now works for Universal Music. We talk to Dante about his career in music journalism and his best advice to give to aspiring music journalists.
Katie Needham is a freelance gig photographer. She has covered bands like Parkway Drive and Eluveitie to name a few. We talk to Katie about her career so far and the best advice to give to upcoming gig photographers.
What was your first publication you started working on?
How did you get into gig photography?
I worked on a magazine called Record Mirror which would be back in the late 70s I suppose. It was more of a pop magazine, it doesn’t actually exist any more as it folded, but it covered some rock music as well.
I don’t know really, I just used to take a little digital camera to gigs and try my hand at getting good shots. I’ve always had a passion for photography.
Throughout your career as a music journalist, who were the best musicians to interview? Ozzy Osbourne was always a good guy to talk to. I was a big fan of KISS so I was lucky to interview them on many occasions, I interviewed Deff Leppard and Motley Crue were always good to talk to, I never really had a bad interview. What would be your best piece of advice for music journalists who are starting out today? I think the number one thing is to have a genuine passion for music and you can’t create that. If you haven’t got that I would give up now.
Do you have any projects planned for the next few months? Slam Dunk festival, I would love to shoot Reel Big Fish or Stick To Your Guns. In June, I’m going to Finland to cover Tuska Festival and get to photograph bands like Lamb of God and Alice Cooper. What would be your best advice for upcoming gig photographers? It’s tricky because everyone is different. Not everybody has the same amount of money. But all I can say is, whatever you have got, use it to the best of your ability and try and get the best picture. Try to branch out your contacts as much as possible, email them your pictures and just try your best! www.distortedsound.wordpress.com

erusalem, the Holy City. Deeply rooted within history and religious conflict that spans generations. The last place on Earth you’d expect to find heavy metal. Melechesh defy this and have slowly crafted a brand of black metal that features expertise musicianship and traditional Middle Eastern elements....

2 years on from their humble origins the band have just unleashed their brand new record Enki to the world. We speak to mastermind, Ashmedi, to discuss the new record and why Melechesh are invidiual in black metal...
"Death metal and black metal are so mechanical...” From this process Ashmedi has crafted and moulded the band’s sound over an expansive career with every record the band has released sounding unique to the one that came before. The band’s brand new record, Enki, features frantic riffs, consistent blast beats and vocals that snarl above the barrage of sound, all whilst traditional Middle Eastern elements slowly creep into the mix. It’s rare for a band to have so many elements present and still produce a record that flows easily for the listener. Often bands include elements of their heritage to act as a selling factor, 10 www.distortedsound.wordpress.com
Melechesh’s music has always been unique. The tempo always ebbs and flows, unique Mediterranean drum beats feature heavily and Ashmedi’s snarls are trademark to black metal. This unique sound is what gives Melechesh their appeal in a genre that has slowly stagnated over the years, Ashmedi describes just how he creates the band’s sound; “I listen to lots of different types of music so when I’m writing it’s not
Ashmedi ensures that Melechesh does not follow this trend. “Well we always say first and foremost that we are a metal band. We don’t use the traditional elements as a gimmick to hide behind, if they are used it is just as a cosmetic.” Despite this, Melechesh’s heritage is one of the huge selling factors as to why the band are so popular within black metal today. But the journey wasn’t easy; the political crisis of the region didn’t help and the lacking of modern technology somewhat hindered the band’s early
mechanical. Death metal and black metal are so mechanical, even in the studio. But for us this is intuitive, this is honest. What you do is you just listen to music and get influenced and it seeps into your music without you really noticing; be it Indian raga or hard rock, psychedelic rock or rock like metal. You as a maker of music get the ingredients of music and you make the songs.”
development. “We never knew we were getting known, there wasn’t the communication we have today and you can’t forget that there aren’t diplomatic relations with the countries there. I think through the internet we just started getting known. But it was hard also to break through everywhere in the world, why sign a black metal band from the Holy City which are practising what you preach when you can sign privileged people from a suburban place in Europe?” WORDS: James Weaver
Since their inception in 2003, Dutch black metal trio Carach Angren have slowly built up a strong reputation in the modern black metal scene. With all their records to date acting as concept records about Dutch Legends, war and horror the band have the cutting edge. We spoke to Clemens Wijers to discuss the new record and why Carach Angren are the leaders of black metal today... 12

N
ow, in 2015 the band have unleashed their fourth studio record, This Is No Fairytale. Through a twisted tale of Hansel and Gretel, Carach Angren continue their stories of horror....
Keeping to tradition, This Is No Fairytale is a concept record. Across nine songs, Carach Angren depict a twisted tale of Hansel and Gretel that addresses themes of fantasy and horror. Clemens recalls how this theme became the focal point for the record; “For some years we already had this idea to include fairy tales in one of our stories. When I sat down one day Seregor called me and said “I’ve made this really
twisted version of Hansel and Gretel”. In the original tale the children are put in the forest because the parents cannot take care of them but in his version he wants them to flee the house because it’s horrible inside. It’s over the top horror!” This can certainly be experienced on the new record, Two Flies Flew into a Black Sugar Cobweb is twisted and raises goosebumps where
as Possessed by a Craft of Witchery drives fear through the signature orchestration and Seregor’s twisted snarls and roars. It’s an aspect of Carach Angren’s lyrical focus that sets them apart from other bands in the modern black metal scene. Whilst other black metal bands focus on atmosphere, Clemens believes by telling twisted tales Carach Angren are unique and therefore sets them above other bands in the scene. “I
"We expect controversy about the subjects at hand” www.distortedsound.wordpress.com

“if people call us dark metal or horror metal we don’t care” think not many bands do it the way we do it. There have always been some concept albums but we really put this in front, we prioritise it. We really try to keep this a focus and a lot of black metal bands focus solely on atmosphere or try to make a point throughout a song. We are story tellers...” Clemens words ring the truth as Carach Angren’s lyrics are often dark, twisted and cover themes that make the skin crawl. There’s No Place Like Home is a clear indication of the band’s priority to deliver horror in the musical format, so much so that following the release of this track prior to the record’s release that band received death threats due to the subject nature of the song’s lyrics; domestic violence. “We expect controversy about the subjects at hand; like domestic violence”, it’s clear that Carach Angren aren’t afraid to focus on subjects that could be controversial, if anything it helps bolster the band’s grip on the black 14 www.distortedsound.wordpress.com
metal scene today. Black metal was notorious in the early 1990s through church burnings and brutal on stage performances, almost two decades since the early days black metal it is considered by many to be tame and simply just another sub-genre of the heavy metal umbrella. Even though Carach Angren don’t resort to actions of an extreme nature outside of live performances, comparisons certainly can be drawn through their twisted lyrics; “of course we included some things stylistically like the vocals and the rhythm guitar playing but that’s just our music as it evolved throughout the years. We don’t try to be like that and if people call us dark metal or horror metal we don’t care.” That is testament to how Carach Angren have developed in their 12 year musical career, without taking extreme measure to gain notoriety, the band have developed a reputation of being fierce and extreme purely
through their sound, a trait that is extremely difficult to achieve in modern music. This is showcased through the band’s live shows, where the addition of unique elements, like a ballet dancer to portray their music of horror or as Clemens states “to spook it up a bit”, this therefore can set the band apart from other bands that fall under the categorisation of black metal. Clemens believes by having unique aspects to Carach Angren’s sound and live performance it can set the band apart in a genre that has steadily become stagnated; “You have to try and find a voice of your own and that can take time. We also had to do this but you have to start somewhere. I think we have a lot of bands that aren’t so necessary, I appreciate everyone trying but I miss bands with their own voice.”
With This Is No Fairytale finally unleashed to the world, the band are ready to bring their horror stories through vast touring. “We are going to try to tour as much as possible. We have some festivals planned and we have good management and good booking agents, so we hope to tour as much as possible.” And despite the challenges of replicating the band’s unique sound, Clemens is confident that it will be possible and a sight to be witness to, “It is a challenge technically because we are a three man group but we did the release show and it really worked well. I’m really sure we can bring this to different countries!” This Is No Fairtale is available now via Season of Mist WORDS: James Weaver

Sword bearing. The Latin translation of Ensiferum. Now 20 years since their humble beginnings, the band are ready to unleash ‘One Man Army’. We spoke with Petri Lindroos to talk about the new record and the dark side of the internet.
‘One Man Army’ is an assault of the senses, blending both speed metal and folk influences to create an album that replicates the sound of medieval warfare. With the record set for released in late February, Petri seems eager to get back on the road. “I’m getting mentally ready to get back on the road. It´s been a while since the last tour so we are looking forward to touring again.” After lengthy successful tours spanning the globe in 16

support of the more diverse yet successful ‘Unsung Heroes’, Petri assures, not just myself, but the fans that the new record is back to the roots of Ensiferum. “Our fans can expect a really kick ass album with a great sound! We added more speed and metal to “One Man Army” and that was definitely the right call after the more diverse “Unsung Heroes”. This time our songs are fitting tightly together creating a great folk metal album”.
Petri’s words ring the truth as One Man Army certainly showcases more speed and aspects of metal that makes a vast improvement to Unsung Heroes. Heathen Horde features excellent double bass drumming and Warrior Without A War features a slick combination of symphonic elements and lead guitar work. It certainly is a polished and refined record and Petri hopes for big things following One Man Army’s release, “that’s the aim of Ensiferum and to

get new opportunities on the touring front by making a great album that will get noticed around the world. This is our strongest album in my opinion and we are feeling great about that and that will be seen on stage in the near future!” The development of the internet and in particular social media has had an impact in nearly every aspect of modern life, and heavy metal is no different. The band allowed the track, Heathen
Horde to be streamed via Metal Hammer’s website, allowing fans a first chance to new song from the upcoming record. It’s now the norm in the modern world for bands to release a track online prior to a record’s release and Ensiferum are no different. Petri believes that social media is vital for bands to reach out to their fanbase; “The importance of those is growing bigger these days. It’s so much easier to get news out to our fans in an
instant than 20 years ago when you needed to wait for a magazine to be released. So that is helping bands to get visibility very easily…” But like every form of media, music in particular, there is the risk of records leaking online and the issue of illegal of downloading which has caused massive damage to record shops. For Petri, this is a personal issue; “the Internet has also caused the fall of record shops where I used to buy my albums by actually going there, checking

Ensiferum out new albums, listening to them and then end up buying one or more CD´s and going home with a smile on my face.” Despite the best attempts by bands, record labels and legal legislation, the problem of the illegal downloading of music remains a thorn in the music industry’s side and upcoming records being leaked online is more or less inevitable, “I’m pretty sure this album will also get leaked at some point. I hope people who listen to it online and like it that they would then buy it the right way.” Despite the issue of records leaking onto the internet, Ensiferum have still built a solid reputation in the world of heavy metal and Petri is confident that following the release of One Man Army, the band can reach new heights. “This is our strongest album in my opinion and the European tour will start on 11th of March. There´s also a handful of festivals confirmed (Hellfest, Wacken, Into The Grave, Bloodstock). Right now the sky is the limit for us and feels like that´s too low.”

People’s Perspective Thoughts and opinions about the current state of the music industry
Jay Z’s Tidal Still Isn’t Making Waves On March 30th Hip-Hop mogul Jay Z promised to change the world with new global streaming service Tidal. Some of music’s biggest names declared that the service would save the future of the music industry. With backing from artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna, Nicki Minaj and Daft Punk Tidal was expected to “change the course of music history”. 5 weeks later and Tidal has been labelled a Historic Flop. Less than a month after the service was professed to be the industry’s saviour the app has unfortunately dropped out of the iPhone top 700 downloads chart and with 770,000 subscribers critics see Tidal as no match for competitors such as Spotify and Pandora. So why has Tidal flopped? And is it fair to say that it has…
Tidal is more expensive than it’s competitors costing $20 a month. But unlike main rival Spotify, Tidal provides better sound - offering a lossless high-fidelity quality. Although this initially sounds like a great USP, is it really worth the extra cash every month? Why would consumers care so much about sound quality when they never have before? Tidal does offer more than “lossless”. They also offer exclusive HD music videos and music playlists made by Tidal musicians. But still this isn’t enough. The supposed exclusives are available to anyone. Jay Z’s Tidal exclusive of “Glory” thanks to the Internet - is now on YouTube. Not so exclusive at all.
don’t really care.”
Despite the service being for “artists & fans” Tidal has received criticism from key music industry players. Mumford and Sons told The Daily Beast “ We just want to play music, and I don’t want to align myself with Spotify, Beats, Tidal, or whatever. We want people to listen to our music in their most comfortable way, and if they’re not up for paying for it, I
In order for Tidal to succeed it must lower the price. Why would a consumer leave Spotify for the exact service (despite the sound quality of course)? Streaming has only recently become a success following the era of mass illegal downloads. So why does Jay Z and his famous friends believe people will now agree to pay a higher price on behalf of exclusives and sound quality. It was a nice idea Jay but the world doesn’t need it – yet.
Last week Jay Z fired back to critics. Tweeting what he called a “stream of consciousness”. “The iTunes Store wasn’t built in a day. It took Spotify 9 years to be successful. We are here for the long haul. Please give us a chance to grow & get better”.

With so many elements present in Nightwish’s sound, there are moments where the atmosphere is lost briefly. Instrumental The Eyes of Sharbat Gula drags for its six minute duration and it is moments like this where Nightwish falter. It can be disappointing, as moments like this taint the otherwise fantastic elements that are present for
the majority of the record. Despite moments where the experience can falter, the introduction of Troy Donockley as a permanent member of the band is a breathe of fresh air. With his duties on uilleann pipes and tin whistle included into the band’s sound, it gives the band a new angle for the symphonic scene. it creates a sound that is both refreshing yet replicates the sound of traditional folk bands. armozets (9) kicked things off in fine style. As the lone support act for the tour, it seemed to many there would be a lot of pressure on the Yorkshire quintet to deliver. Thankfully, they did so in spectacular fashion. Kicking off with the funky ‘Move, Shake, Hide’, underpinned by Will Bottomley’s masterful bassline, vocalist Becca Macintyre and co. immediately grab the attention of the audience, and follow up with another seven
choice cuts from debut album ‘The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets’. The band’s frenetic brand of rock is, for the most part, refreshingly heavy and yet impressively catchy, far removed and more maturesounding than the math-rock stylings of their earlier EPs. It’s really in the slower numbers that Becca’s vocals really began to shine though, the mid-set balladry of ‘Captivate You’ and ‘Particle’ providing a far more melodic contrast to the other abrasively
heavy numbers. That said, it’s ‘Born Young And Free’ and ‘Why Do You Hate Me?’ that evoke the biggest response from the audience, the former even causing a small mosh pit to open up. Even from just this eightsong set, it’s pretty clear that Marmozets are a band that’ll be on to much bigger things soon enough – and deservedly so.
