Black molds thrive on cellulose, which makes paper product materials. Because drywall has two thick paper liners, if the drywall gets too damp, it may become infested with mold. Drywall is also a porous material, allowing the black mold to root, thus making it harder to get rid of. If the black mold growth on the drywall is not abundant, you will be able to clean the drywall sufficiently with bleach and water. If the mold is all over, and appears to be growing inside the drywall, you will need to remove and replace the drywall. Determining the extent of the mold, is done purely by observation, unless you are tearing out drywall to fix something else, and just happen to see mold in the framework and insulation. It appears on the outside when the drywall has become damp or wet from too much humidity, water leaks, or flood. If there are just a few specks on the painted surface of the drywall, it can probably be removed. If you notice growth beneath the surrounding wall and baseboards, the drywall probably has mold growing somewhere on the inside as well. Signs of mold growth inside, are discoloration of the drywall, bulging, and cracked paint. Use a black light to scan the walls, and if a yellow glow appears, mold growth has begun. It is useless to clean drywall that has mold growing inside, because you will never be able to get rid of it. This drywall will have to be carefully removed, so that the spores of the mold are not disturbed, and spread, and discarded appropriately. To clean the black mold from your drywall, you will need to: Secure the area to be cleaned, and protect carpeting and other materials that may get destroyed by bleach or chemicals used. Plastic sheets and duct tape may be used to seal off the area. Protect yourself from mold spores and chemicals, by wearing rubber gloves, protective eye wear, a respiratory N95 mask, and old clothes that can be discarded after cleaning the mold. The quality mask is necessary to prevent you from inhaling mold spores, and the black mold removal product that is used. Wet the infested area thoroughly with a sponge soaked in a chlorine bleach and water mixture, and wipe mold away, discarding sponge when dirty. You may also want to use old rags that would be discarded anyway, to save money. Let this sit about 15 minutes. You may also spray the affected areas, but be careful not to spread the dry mold spores while doing so. Some people prefer to initially clean the areas with soap and water first, then use the black mold removal product.
Go back over the chlorine washed area with a dish soap and water mix, then rinse with clean water and dry the wall thoroughly with towels. Dispose of all cleaning materials and plastic used to secure the area, in a garbage bag and secure with a tie, so that spores do not spread to other rooms or items. Discard bag immediately. It is important to point out that only painted drywall can be cleaned. If it has not been painted, the drywall will have to be replaced, because the mold will be inside and behind the drywall as well. The cleaning procedure may discolor the drywall, and may need to be painted again. You need to use paint with mold inhibitor when painting the drywall again, to help prevent the black mold from coming back. If you do not actually kill the mycelia, or roots of the black mold, it will return, and you will have to start all over again. It is a lot of work, and mess, but the toxins in black mold spores can make your family ill, and it can destroy the structure of your home, so black mold removal from drywall is well worth the effort.
