Vitamin B12 Injection Dosage Our body requires very small quantities of Vitamin B12. The amount is around 2 to 3 micrograms a day for adults above the age of 14, 2.6 micorgrams a day for pregnant women and 2.8 micrograms for women who breast feed. Children require even smaller amounts ranging between 0.4 micrograms per day to 1.8 micrograms per day. We need to add large quantities through diet and suppliments since Vitamin B12 is not absorbed very well in the human body. Vitamin B12 injections are administered intramuscularly or under the skin. Different doses of Vitamin B12 Injections are administered based on the presence or absence of any neurological involvement. The recommended dose of Vitamin B12 depends on several factors like; the reason for which you need to take the Vitamin B12, your current medical conditions and other relevant medical conditions and finally based on this, which form of Vitamin B12 you take. The dosages of Oral and Nasal forms of Vitamin B12 are higher compared to the injected form. Basically the oral and nasal forms are absorbed less by the body. The dosage of Vitamin B12 depends entirely on the medical condition of the patient. Periodical changes are made to the dose based on changing medical conditions of the patient. Blood tests should be conducted periodically so that your doctor can administer the correct doses as per changing medical conditions. This will also allow your doctor to determing the length of your treatment with these doses. An individual suffering from Pernicious Anemia, which occurs when Vitamin B12 is not aborbed properly from the intestine, would require a daily dosage of 100 micrograms per day for a period of 6 to 7 days. If there is an improvement in the condition of the patient the same dose of 100 micrograms can be given on alternate days for 7 doses. Following which 100 micrograms every 3 to 4 days for another 2 to 3 weeks. After this a monthly dose of 100 micrograms is necessary for life. The Vitamin B12 injection should be co-administered with Folic Acid if needed. Patients with Normal intestinal Absorption are treated with an initial dose of 100 micrograms per day for 5 to 7 days based on the severity of the condition. Vitamin B12 injections are also administered for the Schilling's Test to check the absorption of Vitamin B12 in the body. In such a case a full dose of 1000 micrograms is administered intramuscularly as a flush dose. In some cases where nerve problems due to Vitamin B12 deficiency are to be treated, large doses

of 1000 micrograms per day are administered. Most doctors prescribe Vitamin B12 injection dosage as 1 mg per dose every 2 days x 10 times. Maintenance doses are then given as 1 mg once every month. Dosages would need adjustments in cases where the patient has any kind of infection, kidney or liver diseases, iron or folic acid deficiency or if the patient is receiving treatment or medication that affects the bone marrow.
