The new land will become a fabulous area for Engine Farm nature in its own right. But it will also complete a huge circle of habitat where wildlife can spread and flourish. As well as boosting nature, it will also enable us to create a new circular cycleway and footpath. Holme Fen River N

Every £1 you give could be worth £1.25 to local wildlife – at no cost to you

I am a UK taxpayer and I would like all donations made to the Wildlife Trust in the last four years and in future to be treated as Gift Aid donations. I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year (other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify). I understand the Wildlife Trust will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

Your financial support may be used for Contributing Third Party (CTP) purposes through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF). This enables us to turn every £1 that you give us for nature conservation, into £10. Money used as CTP is not eligible for Gift Aid. Should we exceed our target of £182,000 the funds will be used for other vital Wildlife Trust conservation work.

“ With recent shocking news that 60% of UK species are Ramsey to miss this B660 in decline, it would be a tragedy St Mary’s amazing opportunity to transform a huge new area in the Great Fen to wildlife-rich habitat and a fabulous place to visit. Please do give what you can to this appeal today”. – Stephen Fry

Please help us add this vital piece to... Dear <<Salutaion>>

The Great Fen

The Great Fen is among the most ambitious and visionary nature restoration projects in Europe. We’re aiming to return 14 square miles of arable fields in Cambridgeshire back to wildlife-rich and people-friendly fenland. That’s an area the size of a small city! Already some of the rarest species in Britain are returning since we began work on the ground in 2004. With 60% of our native species in decline there could scarcely be a more important time to give nature a helping hand.

A vital piece...

I’m writing today to ask for your help at a critical moment. We have a fantastic opportunity to transform another 182 hectares (450 acres) of land at the heart of the Great Fen at Engine Farm. This chance comes years sooner than we’d hoped, and would increase the area for wildlife by almost a fifth in one go! With your help, not only could we transform this major new piece of land into a nature-rich haven, but crucially, we could at last join up a number of separate areas we are already restoring. Together with the precious relic of original fen at Holme Fen, it could become one huge swathe of habitat where wildlife can spread and flourish. Following a record-breaking grant of £7.2 million for the Great Fen in 2008, the Heritage Lottery Fund has now given us another generous £1.89 million grant towards this and other significant work on the Fen. We must urgently find £182,000 of match funding for this grant to do the work. You already do so much for our work for local wildlife, which is hugely appreciated, but I hope you will feel able to help us raise this sum and make the Great Fen even greater, even sooner and send your donation today. Thank you.

wildlifebcn.org/appeals Oliver Burke Director of Living Landscapes P.S. We have to raise £182,000 by the end of September, so please, send what you can today. You can see just what a huge difference your gift will make overleaf.

n 9,100 acres (3,700 hectares) of an impressive range of wildlife habitats could ultimately be restored in the Great Fen – an area the size of Peterborough or Gloucester!

n Rich grasslands, meadows and wetlands will be created on the new land to provide homes for birds such as corn buntings, linnets, skylarks, lapwings and snipe.

n Cranes, avocets and black-tailed godwits have visited the Great Fen in recent years. We hope they might breed one day, along with other wetland birds such as spoonbills.

n Over 5,000 species have been recorded on land managed by us. 131 bird species have already been found on land we are restoring.

n 55% of the land in the project area has already been secured and is undergoing restoration.

n Water voles, in serious decline across the UK, are abundant here.
