Staff guide to our Personal Tutoring System for Staff
www.anglia.ac.uk/personaltutor
We are committed to engaging with all of our undergraduate and postgraduate taught students from the start of their studies. Our aim is to engage our students in useful and meaningful conversations which help them succeed in their studies, and subsequently realise their career aspirations. A robust personal tutoring system which works equally well in all departments in all Faculties can help ensure we realise these objectives. This guide outlines the minimum requirements for group and individual tutorial meetings in each year of a three year undergraduate degree course and in the first two semesters of a postgraduate taught course, and advises on the kinds of issues which could be discussed in each of the meetings (be aware that some of the suggested topics – particularly the timing of surveys – may need to be adjusted for January starters). It may be that you already exceed this provision, or that you will need to have more contact with students depending on their individual circumstances. We are aware that there will be Faculty or course specific issues (e.g. PDP) that may also form part of the discussion at these meetings.
2
Scheduling of tutorials Note the difference in scheduling personal tutorial sessions. Group meetings must be scheduled by the personal tutor (or other Faculty nominee) so that the sessions appear in their tutees’ timetables. In contrast, it is the responsibility of students, following consultation with their personal tutor, to arrange the individual tutorial sessions.
Monitoring of tutorials A pro forma has been produced to help you monitor the attendance and achievements of your tutees. It will also inform whether the new system has a positive impact on the retention of our students. For further information and to access the pro forma please visit the personal tutor website: www.anglia.ac.uk/personaltutor
