jei-tei_ bridging the gap between children and education...

Nestled among the Badagong mountains

in Southern China, there lies a small rural village called Zhang Jiawan. In this village, children have to climb a 40-metre tall cliff to get

to school, involving a very perilous journey up

narrow wooden ladders that reach the top of the h i l l a n d l e a d t o t h e v a l l e y b e l o w. S o l e l y d u e t o

their circumstances, these children have to risk their lives in order to get to school. Education h o w e v e r, s h o u l d b e a r i g h t , n o t a p r i v i l e g e .

The /Jiē tč/, meaning ladder in Chinese,

is a proposal for a vertical steel structure, that not only physically links the inhabitants of

this isolated village to the rest of the world,

but bridges the gap between these children and knowledge.

STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN:

This steel staircase structure is

based around a system of four staggered platforms which follow the natural topography of the cliff. This system has

D

replaced the pre-existing ladders, which were staggered based on the natural

“platforms formed by the roc k formation. These platforms are held up by

tension rods on top, and tubular struts below - both connected (pin connec-

tion) to a steel plate being held by rock ties.

The mast at the top of the cliff is

meant to be a main support for the first platform, as well as it acts as a thresh-

E

old, framing a pathway for people com-

ing from the top of the cliff. The stair-

case acts as a rectilinear core supported

by cvv columns, and is contrasted by the angled supports of the platform.

in order to successfully integrate the roof space to the site. The figure 8 shape was able to work

best on the inclined site, and by sloping the edge to grade, it invites users of the railpath to visit the communit y space. From the railpath, the

entrance to the ramp leads down into the right courtyard, where cyclists can easily dismount

their bicycles to lounge in the coffee shop, visit the bike kitchen, or use the building as a pit stop.

The library features two floors of pub-

courtyard is designed to be a space for leisure

salvage_

every space is worth salvaging....

The first portion of this project was a hand

drafting assignment, requiring us to design dif-

ferent components of a home. I designed a hearth consisting of two pieces, one with a kitchenette

and one with a shelving unit equipped with a fold out table. The perforated steel doors allow for

utensils or pots to be hung, and when not in use, the entire unit can closed and pushed away into small spaces.

The second portion of the project was to

design a modular housing complex located in

Cambridge, Ontario; re-purposing a series of sites that would otherwise be abandoned and salvaging them to create affordable housing units. It consists of a series of cabin-like dwellings that are

interconnected by a cedar deck. The deck acts as a pedestrian-like street that is accessible by the

community but also creates a unique, shared space for the inhabitants to interact.

Each unit is designed to

house two unrelated individuals, equipped with a shared

living space, kitchen, mezzanine bedrooms, and large ga-

rage doors that open out onto the deck. The east and west

units differ slightly from the positioning of its main en-

trances to the stairs, but they

all face each other in order to maximize interaction between inhabitants.

capsule_ save the nunavut narwhals!

This project is an off-grid research station

dedicated to studying Arctic animals. The station is situated in Pangnirtung, Nunavut and is cur-

rently occupied by two narwhal fanatics who enjoy studying and observing these majestic creatures. The majority of the year in Pangnirtung is cold

with winter temperatures dropping as low as -40

degree celsius. As a response to the extreme temperatures, capsule is designed with a raised aerodynamic shape to accommodate for harsh winds and cold temperatures. The project is passively designed for year round living, incorporating

features such as photovoltaic panels, solar water

heating and passive heating strategies to create a comfortable oasis.
