How to make:

Pineapple Gooey Cake Provided by: Tucker Eldridge

Ingredients Needed: Cake:

1 (18 Âź oz) package yellow cake mix 1 egg 8 tbsp cannabutter, melted Filling:

1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened 1 (20 oz) drained can crushed pineapple 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 8 tbsp cannabutter, melted 1 (16 oz) box powdered sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Combine the cake mix, egg and butter, and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan. 3. To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla and butter, and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mix well. Spread pumpkin mixture over cake batter and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to over bake as the center should be a little gooey. 4. Serve with fresh whipped cream.

Variations: 1. For a Pumpkin Cookies: Instead of the pineapple, add a 15 oz can of crushed pumkpin to the cream cheese filling. Proceed as directed above. 2. For a Banana Gooey Cake: Prepare cream cheese filling as directed, beating in 2 ripe bananas instead of the pineapple. Proceed as directed above. 3. For a Peanut Butter Gooey Cake: Use a chocolate cake mix. Add 1 cup creamy peanut butter to the cream cheese filling instead of the pineapple. Proceed as directed above.

Memorial Day Memories

By: Lacewing

After the winter (known to other parts of the country as spring) we’ve had here in Colorado, summer almost feels like a forbidden dream. We still do not trust the warm weather we get because it’s always been ripped away after a day or two with frost and snow. Now, don’t get me wrong, any moisture is good moisture, but the shock of any actual rain may kill us all. What we need at this point is a day to relax and enjoy the sun, free of work and full of fun. This year, let’s make Memorial Day that day. Let’s make it a day when we gather all of our friends and family together, bring along some badass potato salad, and finally accept that summer is here! Memorial Day has a long history, has been celebrated at different times and in different forms by every state in the Union, and is one of those quintessential American holidays that bring us all together. In an age when everything is tainted by politics and constant reminders of how different we are, Memorial Day is a simple day. Thanksgiving has been lost to Black Friday and Cyber Monday; Christmas has lost its innocence to

complicated religions and petty bickering about phrasing. All Memorial Day wants us to do is remember where we come from, remember those people we have to thank for today, and to have a really great barbeque, possibly some fried chicken. There’s a lot to be said for a day like that. Forget the spring cleaning, chores and stress. Buy ground beef in bulk, a few dozen hamburger buns, some family-size bags of classic potato chips, and don’t forget the necessary condiments. Go out to a nearby park and claim one of those picnic tables that no one ever seems to use. Bring your dog! Bring your neighbor’s dog! Don’t leave the kids behind either. Kids make picnics real fun. The biggest obstacles for Memorial Day are those “epic sales” places like American Furniture Warehouse advertise. It’ll be okay… you really don’t need a deal that badly. It’s not about the money, it’s about the experience. This summer holds a lot of exciting possibilities. From movies and events to concerts and hiking, there will be no end to what great memories you can come away with. A summer like that deserves a launch party.

GROWER’S CORNER The Soil Food Web The soil food web describes the organizational structure of organisms responsible for converting dead organic material back into nutrients that are readily available for uptake by the next generation of plants. For hydroponic growers, this is an irrelevant process, as hydroponic nutrients contain EDTA salts and other chelates whose purpose is to keep nutrients suspended in water, available for uptake by plants, and unbound to one another. But to the organic grower, our soil food web is the key to our entire garden. It allows all of the delicious organic inputs that we put into our garden to be made available for uptake by our plants. Notice I use the term inputs. Things like bat guanos, crab meals, and coffee grounds are all rich with potential nutrient availability, but a large portion of the nutrient potential of these organic inputs is locked away. The key to freeing it is the mass of organisms below the soil line, all looking to take their cut. Bacteria, Fungi, Nematodes, and arthropods all contribute to the transformation of dead

organic matter and plant waste back into nutrients useable by the plant. Bacteria play a critical role in any decomposition process. But below the soil line, the byproducts of their breakdown process are especially important. When organic matter is broken down below the soil line, humic substances are the byproduct. The chief component in these substances is humic acid, the primary organic chelate. The effect of this substance is to help keep other nutrients from binding to one another so that they remain available to be taken up by the plant. In this way, they replace the EDTA salts from our hydro grow with a natural and organic chelate from our feed web. The fungi variety of species play an important role in the health of our food web, and by that same line of reasoning, in the health of our plants. Mychorrhizal fungi do a number of beneficial tasks including attaching to roots, creating root sheaths that protect from plant pathogens, breaking bonds to bound plant metabolites and waste

By: Tucker Eldridge

products using their natural enzymatic processes to allow for these nutrients to become readily available to the plant, and they will also send out hyphae to seek and uptake necessary nutrients for the plant. These processes are taken up by a number of fungal species, with each task being better suited to a different endomychorrhizae or ectomychorrhizae. Nematodes of different species play a number of important rolls on a number of different levels. You have root feeders, grazers who seek out healthy root mass and consume it, much the same way certain arthropods do. And then you have your carnivorous nematodes, the ones who keep our bacterial and fungal populations in check. Root feeders are generally classified as a plant pest, so removal of these pesky organisms is ideal. But our carnivores are a primary contributor to the balance of our web. Different species seek out their ideal food source and keep it within an acceptable range. When there is a booming bacterial population, fungi that rely on the same profile of

resources to survive would be out-competed for resources and they would die off, as fungi do not reproduce as readily as bacteria do. But our population of bacteria-hunting nematodes provides a natural solution. As our bacterial food source increases in availability, our nematodes do the same in response to more available resources. Once all excess bacteria have been consumed, the lack of food then causes an appropriate natural shift in our nematode population. The last component on our list is arthropods. Earthworms are an example of arthropods important to the conversion of waste to nutrient gold. As they move

through the earth, they consume the organic matter in front of them and convert it into rich, nutritiously available vermicompost. This also reintroduces a number of beneficial bacterial species from inside the worm back out into the soil. The soil food web is a highly complex organization of thousands of species of organisms into levels of consumption. What is most important to you, the grower, is knowing that having a representative in each of these categories within your soil, because this will allow for a teeming, truly organic crop that provides the highest quality, most medically viable, medicine you can provide yourself.

Edibles in Review:

Kitchen that Grows

Hello dear friends! Wow, what a crazy month of weather we just had. Seriously, you know you are in Colorado if it can be snowy, rainy and sunny all in one day— or even at the same time—and you are not surprised. I want to thank all the wonderful people at Nature’s Wellness Center for putting on an awesome 4/20 event. It seems to get bigger every year, with more music, food and fantastic vendors. I also want to thank all of you for coming out and enjoying the day. I had a great time meeting a whole of you, and thanks for sharing your ideas and comments. I have been writing for the Gazette for almost a year now, and I always wonder if the reviews actually get read or if they really help people out. I am happy and glad to do these reviews and share them with you, the wonderful readers of the Ganja Gazette. Thanks again for all your support and now, let’s get on with the review for the month. I recently got to try some products from The Growing Kitchen company out of Boulder. The make many wonderful products, like the Zoom Ball, GoChi Ball, and Fantastic Brownie. I got a hold of their Choclava and also their White Chocolate Macadamia cookie to try. I thought I would try two different products from the same company for this month for a little more variety for the readers. I looked at their website and it seems all their products are made using organic ingredients. Some are listed as non-dairy products and many of their products come in two varieties, Sativa or Indica. For example, their White Chocolate Macadamia cookie comes in Sativa or Indica strain

edibles. They took the guesswork out of how you should feel by eating this edible, which is really good for many of the patients looking for specific medication needs for their ailments. When I was picking up one of the products, the delivery guy for The Growing Kitchen was dropping off some edibles and I had a quick chat with him and he told me that the company makes everything in small batches and the batch numbers are located on the back label along with the CBD count. By the way, the very first ingredient in every one of their products is “LOVE.” Let’s talk about the two products I tried. I suggest both of these products with a nice glass of milk to wash it down or soy milk if you are lactose intolerant. The first on is the “Choclavafeels so good” (batch #H032513) and it tastes absolutely amazing. I love Baklava, so it was a winwin situation for me. For those who don’t know what baklava is, it’s a pastry dessert created in the Ottoman Empire and is very popular in the Middle East, Greece, and many other countries. It’s made with various nuts, sweet syrups, and phyllo sheets. This product contains 200mgs of active THC and it’s a big piece of baklava with layers of chocolate. This product is a Hydrid and the package says “Extremely Potent” on it. The Chocolava is recommended for anyone with serious insomnia or severe pain issues. I had this product after a very long day and my lower back was absolutely killing me. I ate the Chocolava around the 6pm time and I was perfect by 7pm. I think it kicked in a lot faster because I ate it on an empty stomach before

Fu-Qua Johnson Ganja Gazette

dinner. I was feeling awesome all night, and the pain level was way more manageable then before, and I slept like a baby. The “White Chocolate Macadamia-Lucky You” (batch #1030113) cookie contains 100mgs of active THC along with 4mgs of CBD. Like the Chocolava, this cookie is big and tastes great. The cookie was a little bigger than the palm of my hand, so a good size cookie. I got the Indica strain cookie for the snowstorm we got during the month of April. I thought an edible and a movie would be exactly what the “doctor ordered” for the night. About an hour it the movie, I was becoming part of the couch. I was so relaxed, and the body high was outstanding. I could feel it all over and was very pleased with this product. I am happy and pleased with all the products I have had the pleasure of trying and these ones were no different. If you are having sleep issues along with managing your pain at night, this product might help you. Who doesn’t like a cookie and a glass of milk at night before bedtime? Last time I was in Nature’s, the Chocolava and the Macadamia cookie were sold out, so I think patients already know how good

they are. If you see them on the shelf, I suggest getting one. Once again, thank you for all the support I have received from all the readers, Ganja Gazette, and Nature’s Wellness Center. I have had a great time writing these reviews and with your support I hope to continue doing them. See you next month and always remember to medicate with care.

How to: Medical Marijuana

Part 1: Vaporizing: Another Way to Enjoy Marijuana

At this point, it is widely recognized that medical marijuana is a very beneficial substance for people who suffer from certain diseases and conditions. It is great for those who are suffering from chronic pain, cancer and stress. There are several ways to ingest marijuana. You could smoke it, which is by far the most popular method, and you could turn it into capsules. You could also turn it into oil, cannabutter or lotion and put it on your skin. There are also marijuana drinks, suppositories and medical marijuana flour. And you could also vaporize it. Vaporizing is not smoking, contrary to what most people think. Vaporizing involves the use of high temperatures in order to evaporate the substances found in marijuana. Meanwhile, with smoking, you need to burn it using open flame. In short, with vaporizing, there is no combustion involved. Vaporizing works by heating the marijuana to a temperature that is hot enough that the beneficial substances evaporate. You would need to have a vaporizer, of course. There are several types of vaporizers

available in the market classified according to how they heat marijuana. These are thermal conduction, convection and thermal radiation. The good news is that there are a lot of different brands of vaporizers available. There is the Volcano vaporizer, the Arizer, the relatively newer WISPR and the Lolite. If you cannot get your hands on any of these, you can also create your own vaporizer using a light bulb. You can follow the instructions here: http://www. marijuanagrowing.eu/ how-make-simple-vaporizer-t593.html. There is no single right temperature in vaporizing medical marijuana. It depends on several factors, such as the potency of the marijuana you have, the density of vapor you are comfortable with, the type of vaporizer you are using, and the amount of cannabinoids you want. It is safe to vaporize your marijuana at temperatures between 200°F and 350°F. To be sure, if you want to vaporize THC, CBN and CBD effectively, you would need to keep your temperatures up from 270° to 415°F. The benefits of vaporizing: 1. Vaporizing minimizes the ill effects.

Vaporizing is the better option if you often have smoker’s cough or if you are avoiding the bad substances that come from burning marijuana, such as tar. You also get to keep these bad substances from getting into your respiratory systems, lungs, and throat. And since you are not burning anything, you do not get the smoky taste, nor do you have irritating substances to deal with. So, in short, you get more of the things you need to help manage your symptoms and less of whatever can be harmful. 2. Vaporizing lessens the risk of getting an accidental high. There are a number of medical marijuana users who do not like getting high. Vaporizing marijuana can help you avoid getting high. One way is to use lower temperatures than what is needed to vaporize tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. THC usually vaporizes at high temperatures, around 300°F to 390°F. And you can still get other cannabinoids without THC. Take note, however, that CBD and CBN vaporizes at a much higher temperature, specifically 403.3°F and 414.9°F, respectively. If you need CBN and CBD, you would need to get THC as well. But do not fret because vaporizers, especially the high-end ones, turn themselves off automatically to make sure that you do not get too high.

by: Alvin Dy

3. With vaporizing, you would need only a small amount of medical marijuana in order to enjoy its health benefits. It is recommended that you use a maximum of a gram of medical marijuana. Admit it, even in a world where marijuana legalization is fast becoming more and more acceptable, it is still very difficult to procure medical marijuana. So you tend to save it when you get your hands on it. With vaporizing, you actually use only a little amount of marijuana to get its health benefits! 4. Vaporizing marijuana leads to better tasting and better smelling cannabis ingestion. Terpenes and flavinoids evaporate at very low temperatures.

These are the substances that give marijuana its taste. So when you are vaporizing, you are actually inhaling great-smelling and great-tasting vapors. 5. You can reuse the vaporized weed. Although it is extremely dangerous to try to smoke the remnants of vaporized weed, they can be reused to make cannabutter, tinctures or hash. Vaporizing is much healthier than smoking cannabis, plus it is a faster and more efficient delivery method than, say, drinking a marijuana capsule or making cannabutter. Given the chance, you might think about giving it a try. Continued on Pg . 15

Chuck Shepard’s News

of Weird

Huh, that’s weird... 2,000+ sq. ft. toilet Architect Sou Fujimoto recently unveiled his public restroom (for women only, though) whose one transparency-enclosed toilet sits in a 2,160-square-foot private garden of cherry, plum and peach trees. The

6-foot-high-walled park is located beside a railway station in Ichihara City, east of Tokyo. Japan is a world leader in fanciful toilets, and Fujimoto said he thought the scenery would enhance the user’s “feeling of release.”

Just a Minute In May, the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled, 3-0, that it is not necessarily improper under federal law for Minute Maid to name a beverage “Pomegranate Blueberry” even though those two ingredients constitute only 0.5 percent of the contents. A compet-

ing seller of pomegranate juices had sued in 2008, pointing out that 99.4 percent of the Minute Maid beverage was merely apple and grape juices. Minute Maid’s owner, Coca-Cola, called the competitor’s complaint “baseless.” [San Francisco Chronicle, 5-18-2012]

Cinco de Mayo Festival!

by: Lacewing

Put your dance shoes on and dust off your sombrero, because Cinco de Mayo is nigh! This unique holiday is technically in honor of Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla against the French in 1862. Within Mexico, however, only the State of Puebla considers May 5 to be a holiday. Cinco de Mayo, despite its history, is really America’s celebration of Hispanic heritage. As well as a great excuse to eat a lot of really delicious, potentially spicy food. Colorado specifically is known to thoroughly enjoy celebrating this particular holiday. Denver is pulling out all the stops, starting first thing in May, and Cinco de Mayo is taking over the Civic Center Park downtown with the Celebrate Culture Festival. (Did you know that the-

word ‘festival’ means the same in English in Spanish?) It all gets kicked off by a grand parade first thing in the morning on May 4 at Colfax Ave and Welton St, heading east on Welton. It will loop around and down Lincoln St, ending at Lincoln and 13th Ave. The eleventh annual Cinco de Mayo concert, Un Toque de Mexico, will be performed on May 2 in the Boettcher Concert Hall. Some of the featured musical talents performing for the official festivities on May 5 are Banda la Revuelta, Maximo Nivel, Desididos, Banda la Original de Jalisco and dozens more. There will be literally many hundreds of different vendors coming out to provide an endless line of gifts, crafts, traditional foods, snacks, games… Rows upon rows. And don’t forget about the people. There will be an estimated 400,000 people milling through booths, dancing at concerts, and cheering on their favorite Chihuahua during the races. More than anything, Cinco de Mayo is about family and community, and

this festival brings those elements together beautifully. This brings us to possibly the best part—the whole shebang was put together by NEWSED, an organization that exists “to promote and develop economic, community programs and projects that raise the income, educational and political levels of West Denver residents.” For specifics about who, what, where, when and how, check out cincodemayodenver.com. Three stages playing music morning, noon and night; numerous vendors selling crafts, wares and artwork; contests and competitions where you can prove yourself (races, eating contests, cook offs); the annual Cinco de Mayo concert... This is our community coming together and celebrating!

How to: Medical Marijuana Part 2: Juicing Marijuana

If you have been in tune with the latest health trends, then you would know that there are a lot of people who are into juicing fruits and vegetables nowadays. It is said that there are a lot of benefits from juicing. For one, your body can easily absorb the nutrients found in vegetables and fruits. A typical person would have less than optimal digestive processes. If you cannot digest the food, you cannot get the nutrients out of it. Juicing pre-digests the food for you, so you can easily get the nutrients you need. What’s more, if you do not like the idea of eating vegetables and fruits too much, it is a good idea to juice them. Do you know that you need one pound of raw vegetables for every 50 pounds of body weight you have? So, for example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need to eat at least 3 pounds of vegetables every single day. You might not want to eat that many carrots, but you can certainly drink carrot juice instead. So if you can juice raw vegetables and fruits, can you juice marijuana as well? The short answer is yes. Cannabis is no dif

ferent from vegetables, or from plants grown as food. We all know that if you cook vegetables and fruits, they tend to lose some, if not most, of their nutrients from the heat so, ultimately, smoking cannabis will lessen the good stuff you get from it. It just makes sense to juice marijuana, instead, and here is why: 1. When you juice marijuana, you avoid having to burn it. This means that you do not get irritating smoke that may contain harmful, irritating and/or carcinogenic substances in them that can affect your lungs, your throat, mouth and other parts of your respiratory system. 2. You can still get all the nutrients and the good stuff (THC and other cannabinoids) that you need in order to manage your conditions and diseases in their purest form. An additional benefit is that juicing marijuana not only gives you the healing substances, but it can also help you avoid getting high. 3. Juicing marijuana allows you to get the cannabinoids that can heal you, but, as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Getting marijuana raw by juicing helps you get more benefits. In-

stead of curing diseases and managing symptoms, juicing marijuana allows you to lessen the chances of getting sick. 4. Juicing marijuana helps your immune system work and function better, making you less vulnerable from coming down with something. It also helps your body fight infections, while also improving brain function. Further, it can help you have increased bone metabolism wherein new bone tissues are formed to replace mature bone tissue. 5. Marijuana, when juiced, can also help inhibit the spread or growth of cancer cells. 6. There are no highs from juicing marijuana. As you know, THC is what makes you high. Juicing marijuana helps you get THCa, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, and CBDa, or cannabidiol acid. When you burn marijuana by smoking it or heating it, you convert the THCa to THC, which is why you become high. Nevertheless, the THCa and CBDa benefit your body. All you need to do to juice cannabis in the same way you would juice vegetables. The fresher your marijuana is, the better it would be for you. Do not juice dried marijuana. Juice roughly 2 large marijuana buds and 15 marijuana leaves per day. The best time to harvest marijuana buds and flowers is when the THC glands are clear,

not when they turn yellowish or amber. Raw cannabis may be bitter when juiced, so add in another vegetable to lessen the bitter taste. For example, add 1 cup of cannabis juice to every 10 cups of carrot juice. Try to experiment with other types of juices and even with various fruits. You can store juiced marijuana for three days, provided that you store it in a tightly sealed container and you keep it in the refrigerator. Drink juiced marijuana after a full and satisfying meal. Medical marijuana users are increasingly finding out new ways to use and ingest mar-

ijuana so that it would help make their lives a little bit better and their conditions a whole lot bearable. It is just sad that the benefits of medical marijuana, whether juiced or not, is not being enjoyed by a lot more people, or by people who should have access to them.
