A whole new meaning for the word “Drugstores”

With the upcoming opening of stores selling recreational marijuana, it would be good to know what the state expects from them. There are regulations and rules published that regulate recreational marijuana. You might find these very boring and lengthy, though. So we have made it easier for you to know more about Colorado’s recreational marijuana coup. Read on! The state revenue department will be tasked to oversee the regulation of the recreational marijuana industry and it has set some rules regarding sale and regarding how licenses are to be given out. The very first recreational marijuana stores are expected to open as early as January 1.

So here is what to expect from stores opening in 2014:

• The Department of Revenue places a great deal of importance on product labeling. Sellers of recreational marijuana will need to use specific language as set out by the department informing would-be buyers about the amount

need to remember that the recreational marijuana industry will be tightly regulated. Everything related to operating a recreational marijuana retail outlet from transportation, storage, security, inventory management and even advertising will be strictly scrutinized. Alvin Dy Foreign Correspondent for the state. It is, however, unclear just how much you are going to pay. There are proposals for levying a 15% excise tax and 10% sales tax on recreational marijuana sales and this will be put into the ballot come November. The good thing is that the money from these taxes will be used for marijuana-related programs, as well as to build new schools or renovate existing ones.

That’s just incredible! FuQua Johnson Edible Revue Hello dear friends! Where in the world did summer go? Seriously, I remember the 4th of July, but what happened to the rest of it? It just went way too fast for my liking and can’t believe school is already here. At least we have the football season coming up; don’t forget to enter the football contest at Nature’s Wellness. They always have a great contest going on during football season and give away great prizes to the winner every week. My summer could be recapped in food, music and family. Did any of you catch the “Bootleggin’ BBQ” last month in Garden City? I had a great time and the food was awesome. I really love BBQ and all the things associated with it. Ribs, brisket, potato salad, coleslaw—I could have eaten my weight in brisket, but maybe that’s just me. Also, I heard Ben Harper put on a hell of a show at New West Fest this summer. You really can’t beat anything that’s free, and it’s Ben Harper! I was recently in western Colorado to see some family and stopped in Palisade to eat some peaches. If you’ve never had a Palisade peach, you have not tasted anything so good. First time I was

introduced to these peaches, I made myself sick. I just couldn’t stop eat them, they are that good. Also, I got to eat Olathe sweet corn, and Rockyford’s watermelon. I couldn’t be happier eating wonderful food and being with family. But now, reality is knocking on my door (more like pounding at the door) because school is about to start. Before I get to this month’s review, I would like to thank the owners of the Incredibles kitchen and Matt at Ace High for their help this month. This review has been a long time coming, so I wanted to make sure it was done right! Since I have been writing reviews for the Gazette, I have come to appreciate all the different varieties of edibles that is offered for the MMJ patients of Colorado. From the original brownie type to carbonated drinks, if you can think it, a company probably makes it. So many choices for the patients to try could get overwhelming; believe me, I know. Sometimes I feel like I’m holding up the line at Nature’s because I can’t decide which edible I want to try. I understand many new patients try different edibles to check them out, and when they find one they like, patients tend to stick with that one for a

while. Well, I’ve tried many different edibles from chocolate to powdered drinks but the one company I constantly recommend to patients, and also select for myself, is Incredibles out of Denver. I know I have done reviews in the past on their chocolate bars, but this one will be a little different. Over the summer, I had the pleasure of traveling down to Denver to meet the owners of the company and get a tour of their kitchen. I was greeted by the owners when I arrived and the tour began after a quick introduction. Since we were about to walk into a commercial kitchen, I was asked to wear a hair net for food safety and to meet health codes. They hold themselves to a very high standard, and I think that’s what really separates them from many other companies around now. After the hair net went on, we stepped immediately into the place where the magic happens.

I really felt like Charlie from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”

because I was just in awe of the place. The first thing that hit my nose was peanut butter and hash. That’s right, readers, they were making their new “Peanut Budda Buddha” bars and it smelled amazing. I was introduced to their chef and the maker of these fine confections. The chef is a real trained chef, which I think that really makes a difference on the taste and consistency of their products. Baking and especially chocolate making is a science, if not an art form. Anyone can bake a cake or a loaf of banana bread, but I really think it takes someone special to work with chocolate and do it well. I’ve tried to work with chocolate in the past, but I just ended up burning things or

they just don’t end up how I pictured it in my mind. But the most impressive thing was the most recent addition to the kitchen. Soon, they will be able to have control from seed to extraction to infusion of their products. They will grow their own medicine to infuse their chocolates with, and there will be no middle man. Also, we might see strain specific products like a Sativa Boulder Bar, or an Indica Buddha bar. Now that would be really cool. While in the kitchen, I asked several questions and they were happy to reply. I really wanted to know these questions. First, I wanted to know their philosophy for their Continued on page 13

She just couldn’t keep her eyes open...

The story of Mollie Trey Gochenour The Hash Man

Hello fellow hash lovers. Today I want to start by saying thank you, so very much, to everyone who has donated money to Mollie Wienski. She is the young lady that the donation boxes are for in the Nature’s Herbs and Wellness and Altitude Wellness stores. Mollie is my step-daughter, but I have been her Dad since she was 6, so in my eyes and in my heart, she is mine; we greatly appreciate all of your kindness. I would like to tell you a little bit about our Mollie. She is an incredible 18 yearold girl, full of kindness; not afraid to speak her mind, but always willing to help anyone and everyone who may need it. Mollie is a go-getter, and when she sets a goal, she goes after it, whole-heartedly. She was Prom Queen and graduated with a 4.13 GPA. She worked with the handicapped kids in the SSN room and absolutely loved it! She was great with those kids and they loved her, too. She got accepted at CSU Fort Collins, which is where she has wanted to go since she was a child, telling her mom

that she wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up. By the time this issue goes to print, she will have started her 8 year journey to do just that. She is so excited to get started. All of that potential and all of those dreams almost came to an abrupt, tragic end. On July 23rd, after working all day and then stopping at the store for milk and eggs, she crawled into our minivan to head home. She was exhausted. It’s only a twelve mile drive home, so she thought she could make it. About six miles away, she just couldn’t keep her eyes open. As the

van started to drift off Falcon Highway, she heard the weeds brushing against the side and awoke with a start. She grabbed the steering wheel and yanked hard to the left, over-correcting herself. Realizing she was too far over and going into the other lane, she yanked the steering wheel back to the right and then everything went black… Back at home, I asked my wife where Mollie was. Noticing the time, she called Mollie’s cell phone. Her heard sank and her legs grew weak when the person answering Mollie’s phone was a State Patrol Officer. The officer told my

wife that Mollie had been in an accident and that they were flying her by helicopter to the hospital. Mollie’s sister, our nine year old, was asleep so

I stayed home with her and began calling everyone I could think of to pray for our daughter. Continued on page 9

The story of Mollie Continued from page 7 As the long night progressed into morning, the story of what happened came together. Mollie had gone off the highway into an 8 foot ditch, which caused the van to go up on its nose and the back end to come up over the top. It hit a fence made out of 2x6 boards; one of them was wedged in the van, right behind the radiator, sideways. Another of the boards came through the driver’s side window and smashed her in the face, leaving a 5 inch gash from the corner of her mouth to just under her eye. The airbag did not deploy, which was a blessing in disguise, because if it had, Mollie’s head would have been pushed back and the other board that came through her window would have smashed her head. The van then rolled two more times and came to rest on its wheels, in a field. She had been collecting canned food for the Black Forest fire victims and had about forty cans in the back of the van—needless to say, the food was now all over the van. Luckily, not too long after the crash, a car came by and, seeing the van upended, called 9-1-1. Besides the gash in her face, she broke her orbital bone and shattered both the top and bottom jaw bones. She lost two teeth and all the rest of her teeth

were loosened. She broke the middle finger on her left hand and had cuts and bruises everywhere. When she awoke, she found the paramedics cutting her clothes off and putting her in the helicopter. “Please don’t take me in a helicopter!” she pleaded with the pilot. “I can’t afford that!” Because they didn’t know if there was any brain damage or internal injuries, it was a must. Mollie remembers telling him not to take her, but she does not remember the ride to the hospital. A plastic surgeon sewed her face up at 4:00 am. It took two hours, but he did a phenomenal job. It was not a clean cut, but a very jagged rip that went all the way through her cheek. He said it was full of splinters and he hoped he had gotten them all out. He said her face would be paralyzed on that side, because the board had cut through the nerves. Nerves take a very long time to grow back, and even then they often do not work. She may also need more surgery down the road; only time will tell. Mollie’s second surgery was that evening at 5:00. It took three hours, twice as long as predicted. This surgeon had to try and wire her bones back in place and wire her teeth to the bones in hopes that they would live through all of this.

When she awoke, her mouth was full of metal and she was in extreme pain. The swelling in her face was unimaginable. She has to wear these “braces” for eight weeks and is on a strictly liquid diet. After those braces are removed, she will have to have regular braces on for at least a year, to form the teeth back into their original state. She will have to have implants put in where she lost the two teeth. Hopefully, her other teeth will survive and she will be able to keep them. If not, she will have to have them all pulled, and either get dentures or implants. She may need more surgery on her jaw, as well. Again, time will tell. Mollie remained in the trauma unit for four days. All the doctors, nurses and even the helicopter pilot told Mollie that she is extremely lucky. The pilot came to see her at the hospital and said that he was certain when they arrived on the scene of the accident that she would be dead. Others who have had wood come through their cars have been completely disfigured, had severe brain damage, or didn’t make it at all. Thank God, Mollie did not have any brain damage or internal injuries, and that she was wearing her seat belt, or the outcome of this accident could have been so much

worse. Mollie has kept her spirits up throughout all of this mess. She is very strong individual. However, because she is 18, the bills will go under her name and none of us has a lot of money, and that is why we are asking for your help. We don’t want to send her off to college with a huge debt hanging over her head, so if there is anything you can do to help her out, please do so. Stop by either of our stores, Nature’s Herbs and Wellness or Altitude Wellness, and put your donation in the box. If you would rather, you can deposit money into her account at any ENT Federal Credit Union. It would be under Mollie Wienski. Once again, we thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, and may

God bless you all for your giving. People, please, don’t drive when you are tired. Pull over and rest for a little while, or call someone to come and get you. It’s not worth risking yours or anyone else’s lives over! If you won’t do that for yourself, just think about how your mother, father, or any other loved one would feel if they called your cell phone and the State Patrol answered… I apologize for not continuing my lessons on hashish this month, but I will be back on track in next month’s issue. Don’t forget to enter the “Name that Hash!” contest. You just might be our next winner. Thank you, again, for helping Mollie. Until next time, keep your stash full of hash!

GROWER’S CORNER

Controlling Powdery Mildew Tucker Eldridge Ganja Gazette

Blumeria graminis, or Powdery Mildew as we all affectionately know it, is a scourge of the grow room during Colorado summers. It is one of the easier diseases for us as growers to spot, due to its distinguishing characteristics. It begins in the root zone, infecting the plant from the bottom up with spores that travel through the plant systemically. When conditions are right for spore maturation, white spots will begin forming along bottom leaves, and as symptoms progress, they will not only spread throughout the plant, they will also increase in size and density as the mildew continues production of asexual spores to help in its spread. Powdery Mildew tends to spread in this prolific manner in moderate temps and with high humidity. It is also important to note that poor airflow can also contribute to its increased severity. Luckily for us, there are a number of solutions to managing this problem in our garden ranging in both price and long term effectiveness. The first, and least expensive, option for

relieving powdery mildew that we have available to us is milk! Milk has been used for decades by rose cultivators to help battle powdery mildew within a crop. When mixed in a ratio of one part milk to ten parts water, it simply needs to be sprayed so that it comes in direct contact with the spores. This kills spores on contact, as well as briefly making the plant surface inhospitable to mildew spores. Due to the fact that fats in the milk neutralize the spores so they are no longer viable, using milk that contains at least 2% fat is a must. The downside to this method, and the primary reason it isn’t the only means growers control powdery mildew by, is that it can only be used as long as there are no visible buds on the plant; saturating buds, with their penchant for holding on to moisture as they increase in density, will cause your buds to mold more quickly than spraying with just water. Another inexpensive, quick fix is to use pH Up to create a 9.5 pH foliar spray for your plants. This causes a shift in the pH of the leaves surface area, making it an inhospitable

growing and breeding environment for powdery mildew spores. This can only be used a couple times in a row though, as consistently spraying your plants leaves with such a high pH water, causes the plants ability to uptake nutrients to be affected, as the plant absorbs different nutrients from the soil depending in the varying pH of the plant and its soil. Spraying more than four or five times on a three day interval will start to make certain micronutrients less available to the plant. You also run into the problem that spraying increases humidity and this is the very issue that initiated our powdery mildew problem in the first place. The next method by which we can effectively combat and prevent mildew, is with a foliar spray of beneficial bacteria. Bacillus subtilis is a beneficial bacterium with a massive array of beneficial uses. One of these uses, when sprayed liberally on plant leaf surfaces, is to out-compete the powdery mildew, as well as other molds and mildews, and neutralize the spores it releases. Again, as with any spraying, this will increase your

Photo courtesy of onegoodyear.com humidity for a time and make your room an ideal location for the mildew to germinate again. Another negative side effect of B. subtilis is that it is more effective as a preventative than it is as a cure once you have an infection. The last method we will talk about, and my personal favorite, is the sulfur burner. A sulfur burner is the most expensive option initially, but it is also the most effective with the least pronounced downsides. It vaporizes sulfur up into the air, and as the sulfur cools it descends down onto the leaf surfaces, killing mildew spores on contact, and can be burned all the way up until week six of flower. The benefit of burning sulfur over spraying anything at

all, is that you are at no point increasing the humidity in your room and compounding your problem. All it takes is purchasing a burner and sulfur prills, hanging the burner in your room, turning off your fans, and running the burner for a few hours during your night cycle, and your problems are solved. So the next time you see those distinctive white spots filling your garden, don’t fret, and get to work dealing with it before the problem spreads to unmanageable proportions! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at Naturesherbsgrower@gmail.com!

News of the Weird

Huh, that’s weird... Can’t Possibly Be True Though Americans may feel safe that the Food and Drug Administration approves a drug only for certain specific uses, the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York ruled in December that drug company salespeople have a First Amendment right to claim that drugs approved for only one use can be marketed

for nonapproved uses, as well. Doctors and bioethicists seemed outraged, according to the Los Angeles Times, generally agreeing with a University of Minnesota professor who called the decision “a complete disgrace. What this basically does is destroy drug regulation in the United States.”

Holy Handguns

One of the many decisions greeting Pope Francis, as Salon.com pointed out, is whether to officially recognize a Patron Saint of Handgunners -- as urged by a U.S. organization of activists for more than 20 years. According to legend, St. Gabriel Possenti rescued an Italian village from a small band of pillagers (and perhaps rapists) in the 19th century by shooting at a lizard in the road, killing it

with one shot, which supposedly so terrified the bandits that they fled. No humans were harmed, activists now point out, signifying the handgun was obviously a force for good. The head of the St. Gabriel Possenti Society has noted that, however far-fetched the “lizard incident” may be, it was rarely questioned until U.S. anti-gun activists gained strength in the 1980s.

Teri James, 29, filed a lawsuit recently in San Diego against San Diego Christian College because it fired her for being pregnant and unmarried -- a violation of specific employee rules. She said the firing was obviously

illegal gender discrimination because her job was quickly offered to the next-most-qualified candidate -James’ fiance, who was openly cohabiting with James all along and is the baby’s father.

Triumph for Colorado

Federal Government is leaving us alone Lacewing Ganja Gazette

As of the end of August, the federal government announced that they would not challenge the new marijuana laws passed in Colorado and Washington, a triumph of sorts for our state government. “Attorney General Eric Holder informed the governors of Washington and Colorado [Thursday] that the Department of Justice will allow the states to implement their ballot initiatives that legalized the production, distribution, and sale of marijuana for adults. Deputy Attorney General James Cole also issued a memo to U.S. attorneys across the country outlining priorities for federal prosecutors enforcing marijuana laws,” informed a press release from the Drug Policy Alliance. One of the big worries voters here in Colorado had when Amendment 64 was on the ballot was that it was in defiance of federal law. As everyone knows by now, the amendment passed anyway, and with a higher turnout of voters than the presidential election drew, but it is an enormous relief at this point to know that we have one less issue to worry about while we work to make this new venture viable. The federal government has made it clear that they have more on their minds, and do not want to waste valuable resources

fighting states that have voted to make recreational marijuana legal. Obama is quoted saying “we have bigger fish to fry” in an interview with Barbara Walters last winter, but this stance has now become official. The government will focus more on “targeting offenses like the distribution of marijuana to minors, the use of violence or firearms in the distribution of the drug, or the sale of marijuana to fund gangs or cartels for prosecution,” according to NBC News. “All the more in a time when federal resources are especially scarce, the Justice Department should focus on countering and prosecuting violent crime, while respecting the will of the states whose people have voted to legalize small amounts of marijuana for personal and medical use,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. While this could be interpreted as simply an effort to re-prioritize, some are considering this as more of a nod of approval. “I must admit, I was expecting a yellow light from the White House. But this light looks a lot more green-ish than I had hoped. The White House is basically saying to Washington and Colorado: Proceed with caution,” said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the national Drug Policy Alliance. According to the LA Times, “For supporters of the state laws, the policy marked a

milestone that they believe will boost their efforts to legalize marijuana in other states, including Oregon, Nevada, Massachusetts and Alaska.” Rachel Gillette, the Colorado executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, also sees this announcement as a positive change in attitude. In a statement for the LA Times, she said, “We’re finally reaching a point where we can look at alternatives to prohibition. It’s become very, very clear that the war on drugs has failed and we need to look at alternative ways to deal with illicit drugs. I’m hoping this will inspire the federal government to treat drug abuse as a health issue, rather than throw [abusers] in jail and leave them there.” It should be made clear at this point, however,

that this announcement in no way endorses making marijuana in any form legal at the federal level. “The Department of Justice [reserves] its right to file a preemption lawsuit in the future, since marijuana remains illegal federally under the Controlled Substances Act,” stated the Drug Policy Alliance. And marijuana remains a Schedule 1 drug, right along with cocaine or heroin. Proponents of legalizing marijuana are still hopeful, however, and the work continues with renewed vigor. As Nadelmann said, “Today’s announcement demonstrates the sort of political vision and foresight from the White House we’ve been seeking for a long time.” Not exactly a win in the fight for legalization, but pleasant news, nevertheless.

Libra

Sep. 23 - Oct. 22

How much time have you dedicated to family lately? It’s easy to take advantage of them, assuming they will be there when you have time, but they deserve a little more attention.
