weirdNews Chinese High-Tech Answer to Red Bull
Chinese media reported that on May 4th, at the Xiaogan Middle School in Hubei province, high school students studying for the all-important national college entrance exam worked through the evening while hooked up to intravenous drips of amino acids to fight fatigue. A director of the school’s Office of Academic Affairs reasoned that before the IVs were hung, weary students complained of losing too much time running back and forth to the school’s infirmary for energy injections. After the media reports, there was a public backlash, but less against the notion that China was placing too much importance on the exams than against reports that the government was subsidizing the cost of the injections. Can’t Possibly Be True
Desmond Hatchett, 33, was summoned to court in Knoxville, Tenn., in May so that a judge could chastise him for again failing to make child-sup-
port payments. Official records show that Hatchett has at least 30 children (ages 14 down to “toddler”) by at least 11 women. He said at a 2009 court appearance that he was “through” siring children and apparently has taken proper precautions since then. (In Milwaukee, Wis., in April, Sean Patrick was sentenced to 30 years in prison for owing more than $146,000 for 12 children by 10 mothers, and the city’s Journal Sentinel newspaper reported that, before being locked up, two convicted pimps, Derrick Avery and Todd Carter, had fathered, respectively, 15 kids by seven women and 16 children with “several” mothers.) The Associated Press reported in May that Kentucky prison officials were working behind the scenes to resolve the thorny question of whether inmate Robert Foley deserves a hip replacement. Normally, a prisoner in such extreme pain would qualify. However, Foley, 55, is on death row for killing
six people in 1989 and 1991, and since he has exhausted his appeals, he is still alive only because a court has halted all executions while the state reconsiders its lethal-injection procedure. Furthermore, all local hospitals queried by the prison to perform the procedure have declined to take Foley because the prison considers him dangerous. Chilean artist Sebastian Errazuriz recently created “Christian popsicles” made from wine that Errazuriz obtained by trickery after a priest consecrated it into “the blood of Christ.” The popsicle’s stick is actually a figure of Jesus on the cross, as sort of a reward for finishing the treat. (Also, The Icecreamists shop in London, England, recently began offering a popsicle made with absinthe -- and holy water from a spring in Lourdes, France, which many Catholics revere for its healing powers. The “Vice Lolly” sells for the equivalent of about $29.)

Voters wanted this. And the law is now in the Colorado constitution after 65% of voters said yes to legalizing recreational marijuana. Colorado will begin allowing recreational marijuana sales on January 1 to anyone age 21 or over. Colorado wasn’t the only state to OK this in November 2012. Voters in Washington also said yes, but that state won’t open marijuana retail outlets until later in 2014. Why?
Because buyers of medical pot won’t face the additional taxes. Medicinal weed in Colorado still requires a physician’s recommendation. How much recreational weed can I buy?
You won’t be allowed to smoke pot in public and, in fact, can’t even smoke in the pot shop or other establishments governed by the state’s Clean Indoor Air Act. That leaves the smoking to private properties, with the owner’s permission. Communities and counties can still choose not to allow recreational marijuana stores in their local jurisdictions, and a good many towns have, such as Colorado Springs and Greeley. Meanwhile, ski resorts are concerned about scofflaws lighting up while on the slopes, with smoke intruding on family settings.

There are the usual “legalize it” arguments about how pot is less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco and how legalization would save taxpayers $10 billion yearly on enforcing the prohibition. Then there’s the reality we all know: There will be a tax bonanza to public treasuries. Retail weed will have a 25% state tax -- plus the usual state sales tax of 2.9% -- making recreational pot one of the most heavily taxed consumer products in Colorado. Some communities are adding even more taxes to the product. The additional revenue will initially amount to $67 million a year, with $27.5 million of it designated to build schools, state tax officials say.

How can this be?
If you are 21 or older, you can buy up to an ounce at a licensed store, as long as you have a Colorado ID. People from outside Colorado can buy a quarter ounce. Only a handful of stores, however, are expected to open on January 1, and Denver will be home to many of them, according to the Denver Post and the weekly Denver Westword. In fact, there are concerns that supplies will be sold out on the first day, with so few stores having passed the lengthy licensing process so far. About 160 retailers are still seeking licenses statewide. Users can also share an ounce of cannabis with a friend as long as no money is exchanged.

4 Edible Review
How By FuQua Johnson
Natures Herbs & Wellness - Altitude Wellness
sweet
Hello, dear friends, and Happy New Year to all of you! I hope Santa was good to you. I don’t know if anyone still makes New Year’s resolutions, but I decided I am going to do one, for my health. I am really going to try cut down my consumption of soda this year. I am going to replace it with health water and juice. Wish me luck and I will return the favor. I know it might be silly but it’s worth a shot. I am really excited for what the New Year may bring, because I feel like you get a fresh start every year, and sometimes I really feel like I need it. Okay, before I get into the review for the month, I am doing some more research on the recreational side of MMJ. I feel like I should get more educated on the subject and I will try to pass on the best and most understandable information I can get my hands on. I know with the New Year upon us, it will bring more people into Nature’s or Altitude’s curious about the different types of edible available for recreational use. So I will try to keep everyone up to date on
it is
this matter. There has been a plethora of edible companies popping up and some are pretty darn good. Recently, I had the chance to try a giant gummy bear from the Sweet Stone Candy Company. It’s a very big gummy bear with a potent punch of 100mgs of THC. I got this information below from their website and I think this explain it quite well: “Available in a variety of flavors, these marijuana infused gummy bears are not only big in size (1500% BIGGER) but potency too. These award winning edibles weigh in at 100MG THC per bear.” They really mean a lot of flavors and there is too many to list on this review, but I know Nature’s will carry a wide array of flavors that will suit your needs. Since it is one big bear, I highly recommend using this product when you are at home, not going anywhere soon. I don’t know about many of you, but I was kind of a twisted boy growing up, to say the least. I remember taking my sister’s pack of gummy bears and taking
the heads off them. Then I would mix the flavors by putting together the separated heads with different flavor bodies. She always hated it when I touched her candy, what can I say, that’s what little brothers do. Anyway, I bought two different flavors (apple and raspberry) and headed to the movies. My girl and I both ate half a bear before the movie started and ate the other half little after. I was curiously surprised at the effect and potency of this product, and so was my girl. She commented on the flavor of them, and I agreed, they taste wicked good, just like a gummy bear. We highly enjoyed the movie and the edible that helped us along. Besides
just enjoying the movie, my back could actually sit in those awful seats. I have really bad lower back problems and sometimes movie theatre seats are too much for my back to take. I will sit through the pain if the movie is really good, but I’d rather just be comfortable. The company also makes hard candies and chocolates. The Gem Stone candies are 50mgs each and each package contains five “Gem Stone” candies. I would highly recommend this product for anyone with severe pain or just to help fall asleep. I think this product has the potency and the lasting effect many patients are looking for when it comes to edibles. Check out the gummy bears or the “Gem Stone” candies. For patients needing higher dosage, just buy two bears and you will be just fine. Well, I hope this review has helped, but seriously, just ask any of the “bud tenders” and they will help find the right edible for you. Like I said, I will do my best on gathering information of Recreational Use in Colorado and what this means for patients (MMJ Card Holders) compared to non-patients (adults over 21). This could get very messy and confusing when I start digging into this matter, so wish me luck. So until then, please medicate with care and I will see you on the flip-side.

Recreational Marijuana - Taxing Marijuana
A BAD TRIP By Alvin Dy There is a lot of talk about the advantages and benefits of taxing marijuana. Like how marijuana would pay for rehabilitation programs, educational campaigns and enforcement. Tax proponents are saying that marijuana will be able to pay for itself. So make it legal as long as it is taxed heavily. However, this kind of thinking is self-defeating, not to mention dangerously wrong. Here is why taxing legal marijuana in Colorado is just not right.
1. It will only discourage the people who need it. What’s the point of legalizing marijuana when you tax it so heavily that prices go up so that people would not be able to avail of it? Sure, it will be accessible, but you still would not be able to get it because you simply cannot afford it. So instead of helping out the people who want and need it, taxation is actually making it more difficult for them to get it. 2. They are doing it wrong, anyway. Colorado voters approved a 15% tax for wholesalers. The thing is, Colorado’s marijuana industry will largely have no wholesalers. The marijuana laws in Colorado say that at least 70% of the state’s sellers will have to grow their own product. If you do not have wholesalers, how do you tax them? The price-based tax will be confusing at the very least, not to mention that a lot of sellers would be trying to beat the system to avoid paying too much in taxes. Nobody would know what the correct tax is, because you are basing your tax on prices that do not exist. If Colorado au-
thorities were to tax marijuana correctly, they should not have looked at price-based taxation, but instead levied a tax based on its potency or weight. Instead of saying you pay 5 cents for every dollar you earn from selling marijuana, you should be paying 5 cents for every gram. That is tangible and easy to do within the system that Colorado has set up for legal marijuana sales. 3. Encouraging bootlegs. With such high taxation, prices of legal marijuana will be so high that people would be looking for cheaper sources: bootleg marijuana. Businesses will try to avoid paying the high taxes and instead sell marijuana on the sly. This will actually defeat the purpose of having enough money to enforce the laws and educate the people about marijuana use. Also, if marijuana
would still be available illegally at more affordable prices, that would only drive up enforcement and regulation costs, not to mention it would be more difficult to monitor quality. So what should be happening here? Taxation is not avoidable when it comes to legalized marijuana. And we do understand that there is a need to earn money in order to be able to enforce marijuana laws and keep worried parents assured. But the taxes should be low enough to put bootleggers away. Without bootleggers, you would not have to worry about people selling marijuana without a license because it is just not worth it. You could be sure about the quality of marijuana going around and that kids would not be able to buy from unlicensed sellers.
In short, having a high tax rate for marijuana is actually self defeating. In the greed to earn more money, the government is actually putting us at a disadvantage. The high taxes will be passed on to consumers who would have to pay for high prices. The high prices will encourage tax cheaters who could beat the system and sell marijuana at a lower price. And because these tax cheaters are cloaked in secrecy, nobody would be able to check on their activities, including the quality of their products. The government would not earn a single dime from bootleg marijuana, but they will be spending a lot of money fighting it. Now does that even make sense?

Legally aware of
Can I grow my own? Yes, you can grow up to six plants in your home, but the pot patch must be enclosed and locked. Can the underage get busted for pot? Yes, it’s illegal to possess and use marijuana if you’re under 21, but the city of Denver this month decriminalized pot for people between ages 18 and 21. The city would keep the fines -- but remove the jail time -- for being caught with an ounce or less. The potential jail time had been up to a year. Youths under age 18 could be sent to a juvenile assessment center, instead of jail. The measure ensures kids “don’t have to live into adulthood with mistakes they might have made when they were 19,” Councilman Albus Brooks said in a Denver Post article. What about DUI? A motorist in Colorado can be ticketed for impaired driving if his or her blood shows more than 5 nanograms of active THC, the active constituent of marijuana, NORML says on its
website. Some users will fall below that level three hours after consuming pot, but “some people will still be well above 5 ng,” NORML says. “Do recognize that the effects of alcohol and marijuana together may be more than the sum of their parts.” Some analysts describe impairment as a guessing game, depending on the person. “Is Colorado’s marijuana DUI rule flawless? Far from it. But as the state’s policymakers have come to realize, the world’s first legal pot rules aren’t going to be perfect. They just have to be good enough. Good enough to keep the feds away, good enough to keep marijuana stakeholders happy, good enough to keep Coloradans from worrying they’ve made a horrible mistake,” University of Denver law professor Sam Kamin and writer Joel Warner wrote in Slate this month. And what about the feds? It’s always been a murky relationship between the feds and those states with laws authorizing medical -- and now recreational -- marijuana. Federal law says the drug’s possession, manufacture, and sale is illegal,
punishable by up to life in prison, and its mass cultivation is a sensitive subject among growers, experts say. But in August, the U.S. Justice Department said it won’t challenge Colorado or other states with laws legalizing recreational marijuana. Instead, federal officials will focus on serious trafficking and keeping the drug away from children.
Can I giggle? Let the jokes and puns begin -- stoned or not. Even Colorado NORML is being cheeky about it, posting online a list of what’s allowable under the new recreational pot law. It’s called “Doobie-DOs.” CNN News and CNN’s Miguel Marquez, Ana Cabrera and Sara Weisfeldt contributed to this report.

Cooking With Cannabis Concentrates:
Kief and Hash
Cooking with concentrates, namely kief and hash, opens up a whole new world of recipes that can be converted to cannabis cooking. A lot of these recipes contain far less fat than ones that depend on butter or oil to carry the medication, an important consideration for those trying to curb calories or limit fats. Of course cannabis metabolizes better with some fat, but when you cook with concentrates, you eliminate the need to add extra oil or butter to achieve a proper dose. When cooking for my own use, as opposed to developing recipes for others, I almost always use hash. I find that its slightly nutty flavor naturally blends in better with more foods than the herbal undertones contained in marijuana infused butter and oil. Before we go further, let’s define the terms so everyone is on the same page: • Kief is a powdery substance composed of the resinous glands or trichomes on the marijuana plant. The powder can range from somewhat sticky to gummy depending on
the plant and strain. • Hash is kief that has been heated and pressed. Hash can range from gold to dark green or brown in color and from a dry, crumbly, powdery texture all the way to a sticky putty-like substance, and all points in between. Hash and kief are known as cannabis concentrates because they contain the part of the plant that contains the THC, without much of anything else. In practical terms, this means far less herbal flavor in the finished food. The potency of a given concentrate, of course, depends on the quality of the plant that dedicated its glands to making it. Hash and kief can be used interchangeably in recipes. How to Cook with Kief or Hash As we discussed earlier, kief and hash can range from dry and crumbly to sticky and gummy. Many smokers prefer the latter, but for cooking purposes, the dry, crumbly, powdery stuff is often easiest to work with because it is easy to grind which then allows you
to stir the fine powder into all kinds of foods, something impossible to do with the gummy type of hash. If you plan on dissolving the hash in a hot liquid, however, either type will work fine. Like any cannabis edible, your hash or kief infused food needs some fat, or alcohol, to help it metabolize effectively. If you do want to add hash or kief to a fat free food, be sure to accompany the food with another dish that does contain some fat, or wash it down a glass of milk, or coffee or tea with cream, or some other fat
containing beverage. The other consideration when cooking with any kind of cannabis is temperature. Remember, THC evaporates at temperatures greater than 392 degrees F. You can cook at temperatures higher than that, as long as the temperature of the food itself doesn’t get that high. Thanks to Cannabis Cheri at http://www.cannabischeri.com/ for providing such a fantastic article and cooking tidbits. Check out her fantastic cook book The Cannabis Gourmet Cookbook by Cheri Sicard

just for Fun which can be floral in scent but can be stinky as well. Some people become catatonic after toking, while others eat a lot or become paranoid.
By Alvin Dy We have always been serious around here, right? So why not start the year on a lighter note? For this month, let’s tackle some of the questions that you might have about marijuana and answer them one by one. Marijuana is all about THC, right? Well, right and wrong. THC is probably the most talked about component of marijuana because it has been pinpointed to be responsible for the high that most users experience, and this is what most people look for. But there are literally hundreds of chemicals in a marijuana plant, and this is the reason why marijuana’s effects differ from person to person. Perhaps more than THC, people should also be talking about CBD. CBD is like having a whole pharmacy in a marijuana plant. The CBD gives you all the medicinal benefits and properties. It is CBD that fights cancer, relieves nausea, alleviates pain and even reverse multiple sclerosis and fight HIV and AIDS. Remember that it is only THC that is primarily responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana, so if you are looking to get high, ask for something that has a high THC content in it. Where did marijuana come from? We are more inclined to answer “the earth,” or “same place as the grass, the trees and the mushrooms.” But, seriously, there has been evidence of marijuana use among the an-
I have an employment drug test tomorrow and am going to a party. Will that show up? Unless you partake, marijuana will not show up in your system. Even if you stay in a room where everybody is smoking. A scientific test done more than 20 years ago revealed that you will need to inhale a ridiculously high amount of second hand smoke for it to show up on any test. So you need 14 people lighting up in a small and unventilated room measuring 10 feet all around before traces of marijuana show up in your tests.
cient Chinese close to five millenniums ago. So to call people in Colorado “advanced” and “modern” for approving and legalizing marijuana use would need to be put into context. What’s the fastest way to get a fix? There are actually several ways to get marijuana into your system other than smoking it. You can use a blunt, a volcano, or a water pipe. That means that you can vaporize it, make it into oil, smoke it, or eat it. Ingested THC, however, can be very slow. Inhaling the smoke is still the fastest way to feel the effects of THC.
Sativa and indica, what’s the difference? There are several strains of marijuana available in the market. It could be anywhere from a pure indica to a pure sativa. Before we bore you to death with the technicalities, indica gives you a feeling of sleepiness and makes you relaxed. Sativa, or to make it easier for you to remember the difference, viva sativa, gives you more energy. It is these strains that also give marijuana different effects, tastes and smells. Marijuana users often find the most pungent marijuana to smoke, smelling like dirty diaper, biodiesel and skunk. There’s also gumbo
But how does marijuana work? As we have indicated, marijuana has several chemicals in it. The thing is, our bodies produce chemicals that are similar to these compounds found in marijuana. And this is the reason why we are affected by it. Our brains, for one, have neurotransmitters that can receive and process THC, CBD, CBN and a host of other chemicals found in marijuana. Marijuana’s components hijack these receptors and work on them. For instance, anandamide is a receptor that THC can hijack. Anandamide regulates your appetite, pain, mood, memory, and learning. The human body has a lot of these cannabinoid receptors, so even one joint is enough.
