--Denials of disability allowances in the town of Basildon, England, near London, are handled at the Acorn House courthouse, on the fourth floor, where afflicted people who believe they were wrongly rejected for benefits must present their
appeals. However, in November, zealous government safety wardens, concerned about fireescape dangers, closed off the fourth floor to wheelchair-using people. Asked one woman, turned away in early February, “Why are they holding disability tribunals in a building disabled people aren’t allowed in?” (In February, full access resumed.) Inexplicable
--One of the many decisions gre--Two teachers and three student teachers at a Windsor, Ontario, elementary school somehow thought it would be a neat prank on their eighth-graders to make them think their class trip would be to Florida’s Disney World, and they created a video and PowerPoint presentation
previewing the excursion. The kids’ exhilaration lasted only a few days, when they were informed that plans had changed and that they would instead be visiting a local bowling alley. Furthermore, the teachers captured the students’ shock on video, presumably to repeatedly
re-enjoy their prank. (When the principal found out, she apologized, disciplined the teachers, and arranged a class trip to Niagara Falls.) Unclear on the Concept
--Dustin Coyle, 34, was charged with domestic abuse in Oklahoma City in January, but it was hardly his fault, he told police. His ex-girlfriend accused him (after she broke up with him) of swiping her cat and then roughing it up, punching her, elbowing her and sexually assaulting her. Coyle later lamented to police that she and he were supposed to get married, but for some reason she changed her mind. “If she would just marry me, that would solve everything,” but, according to the police report,

--First-World Products: The DogTread Treadmill is a modification of the familiar exercise machine in homes and health clubs, with special features for dog safety -- a helpful invention in a nation in which over half of all pet dogs are too fat. (A somewhat higher percentage of cats is overweight, but it is unlikely that marketing a cat treadmill has ever been considered.) The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention points out that pets can develop type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis, and that the problem stems from insufficient exercise and overindulgent owners. (The DogTread Treadmills sell for $499 to $899.)

--In a Philadelphia courtroom in February, alleged assault victim John Huttick was on the witness stand tearfully describing how miserable his life has become since he lost his left eye in a barroom fight with the defendant. Right then, however, his prosthetic eye fell out. The judge, certain that it was an accident, quickly declared a mistrial (especially since two jurors, seated a few feet away, appeared sickened).

By Lacewing October is the time of year when we embrace the crazy. In so many ways, people simply let loose and fall apart, only to pick themselves back up on October 31 for the stately and sedate month of Thanksgiving. It is as if the whole country needs a little bit of fun release before suffering through the stress and “good times” of the heavy-hitting holidays later in the year. Though parent celebrations to our American version of Halloween have existed around the world for centuries, the holiday did not exist here from the beginning, like you might expect. The Puritans, unsurprisingly, staunchly opposed the day. They never really were the life of the party, anyway; it was after the heavy influx of Irish and Scottish immigrants came in the 1800’s that Halloween was able to get a toe-grip. Things like Trick-or-Treating and dressing up are traced back to those European cultures. A lot of elements that are sprinkled through celebrations are drawn from horror or Gothic sources, however, like books and movies that made a more terrifying impact on society. Ghosts, monsters, mock-occult imagery, and corpses are common themes and décor for Halloween. Though the day may mean something different for everyone (trick-or-treating for the kiddos, booze and busts for the collegiate crowd, semi-elegant parties for those who enjoy their dignity) Colorado can be counted on to remain in spirit and provide a little extra entertainment, always in keeping with going a little mad. For example, there are quite a few parties centered entirely around dressing up beloved Fido or Mittens. Meow-loween invites you to

Edible Review
Whats box? in the
By FuQua Johnson
Hello everyone and hope you are all doing well. First off, I would really want to say thanks to all those first responders during the floods last month. I was very young when the Spring Creek Flood happened in 1997, but my older sister was a freshman at CSU and her entire basement floor of her dorm got flooded. I understand that many people from the Evans area were hit really hard. I saw the aerial photos of the before and after shots of the one trailer park in Evans and I just really could not believe how bad it really was. I understand times are very tough and down-right awful for many, so if you can donate in any way, I would humbly ask that you do. You do not need to give money; many have lost essentials for daily life like clothes blankets, food and many other things. If you could spare old clothes or an extra coat for the upcoming winter would really help many of the families affected by this disaster. So, I would like to say thank you in advance for caring for your
neighbors and helping in whatever fashion you can. THANK YOU! Okay, let’s get the review un-
to really let myself enjoy this edible without any problems with me smoking my medication.
der way. On a recent visit to Nature’s, I was curious about this little square chocolate confection I saw in the fridge. I have heard very good things about it but was weary of the whopping 300mgs of THC in such a small package. So I decided to man-up and finally go for it. After receiving the small wonder of awesomeness, I decided to clean out my system for three days
So after three days of waiting patiently, I decided to really enjoy the Bronco game against the Giants with the help of this edible. After removing the wrapper, it reveals a small tin box with a see-thru top to expose the edible inside. The lid shows the dark chocolate and white chocolate, showing you where to cut it in half if you need to. Inside, however, was not
what I expected. The center of this was green and kind of threw me off. The center was revealed to me when I cut it in half because I didn’t want to take all of it at once. I ate the white chocolate half an hour before kickoff (little after 1pm) and waited for the magic to begin. I was getting snacks for the game and my girl was already on the couch ready to watch her Giants play. (Yes, she is a Giants fan and has Eli’s jersey. Can’t blame her though, she was born and raised in Manhattan.) I was about to sit down when I felt this rush of medicine run through me. It was an awesome feeling, if you know what I mean. The half I took was just right for me to really enjoy the game. After the game, I took the other half in two small bites an
hour apart. Let me tell you friends, by the time I was ready for bed, I was feeling amazing in every way. Also, I slept like a baby throughout the night. In other words, I would highly recommend this for patients with major to severe pain and insomnia. This will really help with many symptoms you may be facing on a daily basis. I wouldn’t recommend this product if you want to be productive. I mean, you possibly could if you split it up into smaller pieces, but this edible is small already, and it could be difficult to do. Please stay safe this Halloween and enjoy the candy, and like always friends, please medicate with care.

Recreational Marijuana
What’s it good For? weed might just change your Mind By Alvin Dy
Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a neurosurgeon. He teaches neurosurgery as an assistant professor at Emory University’s School of Medicine. He also serves as the associate chief of neurosurgery at the Grady Memorial Hospital. On top of that, he is CNN’s chief medical correspondent and host of the show Sanjay Gupta, M.D. If there is anyone who should be against marijuana in all its forms, it would be Dr. Gupta. In fact, just three years ago, Dr. Gupta wrote an article for Time Magazine where he explained why he was voting no to marijuana legalization. Back then, he said that the diseases and symptoms that were alleviated with marijuana use were easily explained by other things and that most proponents of marijuana were just looking for easier ways to get high. But that was three years ago. Dr. Gupta has now become a staunch advocate of marijuana and has taken time to clear the air in his column for CNN. The title is simple and right to the point: “Why I changed my mind on weed.” In the article, Dr. Gupta wrote that after interviewing more medical professionals from all over the world with experience related and relevant to marijuana and after reading studies about marijuana coming from smaller labs outside the country, he found out two things: 1. Marijuana indeed has medical uses. 2. It does not have a high potential for abuse.
Then Dr. Gupta talked about patients who did not have any other choice but marijuana to help treat their diseases or manage their symptoms. In his work for his documentary on marijuana, Dr. Gupta met a lot of people who have relied solely on marijuana to live normal lives. Instead of merely reading all about marijuana on relevant publications, he was able to get accounts of firsthand experiences from people. These are real people helped by marijuana every single day. Dr. Gupta also presented the case of Charlotte Figi. Before even turning one, Charlotte started suffering from seizures that lasted for hours. The doctors ran a lot of tests on her and still found nothing. None of the medications prescribed to Charlotte worked. What’s more, the seizures and the medications were hindering her development. By the time she was three years old, Charlotte was having 300 grand mal seizures per week. And when Charlotte was
5, the doctors gave up on her and told her parents there was nothing more they could do. That was when Charlotte’s parents turned to medical marijuana. Now, Charlotte is getting weed oil mixed with her food twice a day. She is getting more and more independent and her parents are seeing improvements in her behavior. She’s now riding her bike and walking. Plus, the seizures have practically left; she’s now down to two to three seizures a week. Charlotte is only one of the thousands who benefit from marijuana every day. She might be controversial because she is still a child, but it does not take away the fact that, like many others, she is now living a more normal life because of marijuana. And this is when nothing else worked! We need to change the way you think about weed. In the future, maybe even in the near future, people could look back to today and see just
how cruel it was to deny the sick or dying the healing properties of marijuana. Seeing how cannabis is able to help a lot of people manage their diseases, and sometimes with cannabis being the only treatment option that works for them. Isn’t it enough that we are denying patients like Charlotte the ability to live pain-free and normal lives? We should become catalysts for change when it comes to marijuana legislation. Marijuana was classified as a schedule 1 substance in 1970. That was more than four decades ago! Now, doctors and medical experts are saying that the declaration that marijuana is as dangerous and addictive as heroin and cocaine is baseless and unfounded. Now, with all of these new findings, studies and personal experiences regarding marijuana, isn’t it about time we take the chance to change our minds as well?

By: Trey Gochenour, The Hash Man Hello Fellow Hash Lovers and Ganja Gazette Readers! Let me start by saying thank you so very much to everyone that contributed to my daughter’s fund! We greatly appreciate your generosity and caring! Through she still has to have bone grafting done and more braces, she is recovering well and will be at Nature’s Herbs and Wellness Center on Customer Appreciation Day and looks forward to meeting you all and thanking you personally. Now on to the consumption of hash! The effects of Hashish can be induced by any of three methods of ingestion: eating, smoking, and vaporizing. Smoking and eating are the most common ways of ingesting hash. The effects of eating hash are definitely different from smoking or vaporizing, because of the pathways of absorption. When smoked or vaporized, Hashish goes directly to the brain, and when eating it, it has to go through the liver first before entering the blood stream. Smoking of hashish is directly related to the introduction of tobacco smoking, which made smoking hash more easily accessible. No longer did one have to eat Hashish and spend 12-24 hours under its powerful effects. Now, with just a few puffs, the user could be pleasantly high for only a few hours. The addition of vaporizing also made this even easier and more enjoyable, as it was less harsh on the lungs. What is a “high?” The experience of being high on hashish varies for each person. In

ancient times, some people used it as an integral aide to a mythical search and meditation. Few modern hashish users seek supernatural or transcendental experiences. 12th and 13th century poets described the effects as euphoria, social ability, carefreeness, feelings of importance, intelligence, jocularity, and amiability. Most modern day hashish smokers also seek some of these same effects. Also the feeling of relaxation is sought today. Smoking of hashish is usually done in a social setting. The common goals are to relieve stress and alleviate boredom, enabling the troubles of the day to be forgotten. Hash may be smoked to enhance creative thought, letting mental ideas that may otherwise be blocked be freely thought out. Hashish has also been known to increase sexual pleasure. Older consumers use it to pass time and relieve the aches and pains of aging. Smoking hashish, for some, gives them an awareness and appreciation of community. Cannabis users often feel persecuted because of the legality, and so they feel they are part of an intimate group that usually does not become a social problem. Generally, the effects of smoking Hashish are light and manageable, leaving all but the most inexperienced users with a controllable feeling of euphoria. However, eating hashish can leave the consumer quite powerfully effected, with vivid hallucinations, rushes, a feeling of loss of control, and paranoia from eating large doses. One belief is that cannabis smoke expands in the lungs,

and that the more potent it is, the stronger the cough it produces. Many smokers believe you have to “cough it off.” A large enough bit of cannabis will produce a rush and will cause coughing if it is held in long enough. In order to get the maximum THC absorption, a hit should be held in for 20-50

seconds. If too much smoke is inhaled, it is difficult to hold in for longer than 5-10 seconds. So try to take smaller hits and hold them in longer; this will allow your stash to last longer. This is part 1 of 2 on the consumption of hashish. So, until next time, keep your stash full of hash.

Marijuana Legalization
By The Numbers By Alvin Dy While the rest of the country, and many parts of the world, keep an eye on the daring move Washington and Colorado have made into the world of marijuana, the debate still rages as pros and cons battle it out. Ultimately, a lot is at stake for what impact the sale of marijuana will make on our flagging economy. Without touching on the very sensitive issues of person freedoms, proper care for patients, or the effort for the truth to be known about what marijuana really is, we are going to break it down to the basics of cold hard cash.
1. Up to $7.7 billion saved. Legalizing marijuana would save the government up to $7.7 billion by not enforcing prohibition laws, including apprehending and persecuting users. This was the finding of Jeffrey Miron, an economist at Harvard University 2. $6 billion earned. Miron also reported that the government stands to earn around $6 billion if they are going to tax marijuana the same way tobacco and alcohol are currently taxed. 3. More than 300 economists. Jeffrey Miron is a highly respected economist. If you think that he has been “tweaking” the numbers to make it economically appealing to legalize marijuana, then we can happily tell you that more than 300 economists have endorsed Miron’s study. That includes three Nobel laureates. 4. $1 billion a year spent. American taxpayers – yes, that’s you and me – are paying at least a billion dollars every year jailing marijuana users. That is according to
statistics released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice. 5. 25 million Americans and 31 million pounds. According to High Times, 25 million people in the United States use a total of 31 million pounds of marijuana in a single year. 6. A $113-billion industry. According to Jon Gettman, who holds a Ph.D. in public policy from George Mason University, in his study “Lost Taxes and Other Costs of Marijuana Laws,” marijuana is a $113-billion industry. That means that the government is losing out on $41.8 billion every year by keeping it illegal, including $31 billion lost in tax revenues. 7. $14 billion sold. Time Magazine wrote in 2009 that California sells $14 billion worth of marijuana a year, making it the state’s biggest agricultural commodity. In fact, marijuana was making almost double what milk and cream were bringing in for the state. That means that legalizing recreational marijuana in the state would give the state coffers around $1.3 billion, eventually helping the state turn around its worsening economy. 8. 43,000 medical marijuana dispensaries. In 2010, there was an estimated 43,000 medical marijuana dispensaries in the United States. 9. 44% of Americans in favor. A Gallup report in 2010 showed that 44% of American adults are in favor of legalizing marijuana, almost doubling the number of people who agreed to have marijuana legalized just 15 years before.
10. $36 billion. How big is the illegal marijuana industry? It’s $36 billion. 11. $600,000 in license fees. In one county in California, an increase in licensing fees brought in $600,000 in revenues for just one year. Mendocino County used to get only $60,000 from licensing fees, until it started to use zip-ties to identify legal plants. The county started charging $50 per plant and an additional inspection fee. Where did the money go? It saved seven sheriff’s deputies from unemployment and brought money into the county coffers. Around two-thirds of the county’s economy is financed by medical marijuana. 12. $5 million earned. Colorado was able to collect $5 million from taxes related to medical marijuana. Colorado Springs, for example,
earned more than $700,000 during the year. Not much? Think about it, the city turned off a third of its street lights the year before to save around $1.2 million. That $700,000 is certainly a big help. On the other hand, Denver collected $3.4 million in sales tax during the year. 13. 75 jobs. Marijuana grower WeGrow says that each of its stores gave jobs to 75 people, whether directly or indirectly. 14. 300 dispensaries. As of July 2011, Denver had more than 300 medical marijuana dispensaries. That number is far more than the number of Starbucks in the city. The bottom line? Legal marijuana helps the economy in a big way. It creates jobs, it brings in much needed revenues for the government and for the cities, and it also lowers the costs for law enforcement agencies.

Grower’s Corner
Home
Organics Options By Tucker Eldridge
When growing our medicine organically at home, spending large sums of money on expensive bottled organic nutrients can begin adding the bills up quickly. This, along with making sure our medicine is safely produced, is precisely the reason we begin growing for ourselves in the first place. This means that if we have the opportunity to use waste products from around the house to improve the health and vitality of our garden, we should exercise that opportunity to the fullest extent. This article will outline some of the ways we can convert our at-home waste into usable nutrition for our plants to thrive from. We can start in our front lawn. Every time we mow, we take dozens of pounds of nitrogen rich grass clippings and throw them in the trash. These clippings can be composted with soil and root mass from past grows to form nitrogen rich soils that can be added as a top dress or cut in when transplanting to increase vegetative growth. You can generally use most of your garden plant waste as a high nitrogen nutrient source for your compost pile. You can use things like root mass and crushed plant stems as a carbon source, and things like chicken, cow, and horse manure offer a wide array of complex nutrients for your plant to take advantage of. When creating a healthy compost pile there are a couple of things we must remember to ensure the successful decomposition of our pile as well as to protect the viability of as much of the micro life within our
“...to form nitrogen rich soils... compost as possible. Keeping a compost pile moist, but not soggy, helps encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria within the compost pile, which will aid plant growth when the compost is used with the plants. It also speeds the composting process and will allow you access to your homemade compost more quickly. A healthy warm compost pile breaks down more readily than a soggy cold pile devoid of life and oxygen. My preferred method for adding oxygen deep into the pile is a breather tube. There are many variations of this, but the basic premise is that you are inserting a thick tube down into the bottom of your pile and using this tube to introduce oxygen deep down into the pile. The reason I prefer this method to the traditional turning of a com-
post pile is that fungal strands in their early stages of life can be particularly fragile, and the constant agitation of your pile inhibits their ability to grow at their full capacity. The last thing we want to remember about our compost pile is that we want to avoid the addition of any meat or dairy products to our pile, as they attract unwanted pests and bacteria to our pile. These inputs come primarily from the one other place in your home where prime nutrition is being tossed away, in the kitchen. In the kitchen, we produce a tremendous amount of waste through a myriad of processes. From cooking to reading the newspaper to opening junk mail, we end up with a lot of leftover waste that ends up in the trash. But with the proper means, we can convert this waste into a
highly nutritious soil amendment to improve the growth and health of our plants, all while reducing the amount of waste we contribute to landfills. This can be done through the simple process of vermicomposting. A small vermicompost bin would consist of a small bin full of worms to which you could add your kitchen waste. Worms would eat the waste and convert it to nutrient and microbe rich vermicompost, an organic soil additive with tremendous potential to improve plant health and vitality. Chopped up plant waste from fruits and veggies provides their primary food source, and provides a broad spectrum of nutrients in our vermicompost. Shredded newspaper provides them with bedding, as well as providing a rich source of carbon for your final amendment. You can also add things like used coffee grounds, crushed up egg shells, and dried up or moldy bread to even further diversify your nutrient content of your vermicompost: and once your earth worm bin is producing rich healthy castings, you can use them for a broad spectrum of beneficial applications. These include top dressing your pots or flower beds, mixing it into your soil when transplanting, and brewing teas to be used in water and foliar applications. The uses for your home made lawn compost, and your home made kitchen vermicompost are extensive, and making them allows you to turn your daily waste into quality organic medicine.
