01 TWISTED CORRUGATION Fall 2015, Pratt Institute, Critic: Alex Barker Derived from a herringbone pattern, this project focuses on new solutions to make better use of the POPS (privately-owned public spaces) in New York City. Many of these spaces exist all over the city, however, most of them are underutilized. Located in the heart of corporate Midtown East, this design offers a new approach to ofďŹ ce design. Particularly focusing on small startups, the project offers a variety of small and large spaces to accommodate exibility for events, incubator spaces, as well a different circulation path from the 6 train at 51st St.

02 JOSLYN CASTLE OFFICE Summer 2014, HDR Inc., Team: Jamie Niver & Sarah Jones
During my internship, I was granted the opportunity to work on a project that could greatly affect my community. The project was a preliminary design for a renovation of an existing office to become the new (and first in our city) community design center. This design center would serve as the center for board meetings of organizations like AIA, ASID, ASLA, and other design organizations as well as the venue where an interested citizen could find information about any design events or design chapters. The design created by another intern and I would spark a fund for the design implementation to take place.

03 ORIGAMI Spring 2014, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Critic: Becky Rae Within the third year Interior Design studio, we were assigned to design the interiors as well as branding of a cosmetic store. Situated in New York City within the first floor of an inner-city building, a demanding program made for a challenging but stimulating project. The goals of the project were to carry out a concept through the brand and design and cater to the users. Given this information, I knew I wanted to design something that signified adaptability. The idea of origami is that you can take a simple piece of paper and turn it into something beautiful just by manipulating it without making permanent changes. I’d like to think that cosmetics do the same thing – make one more beautiful without inflicting permanent changes. Origami is adaptable to whatever needs you may have and ideas you want to create, just as makeup is. The store has a modern atmosphere that makes the user feel pleased being there. The cosmetic industry has to appeal to many different people; whether it‘s race, cosmetic needs, or style, Origami is designed with the understanding that a diverse demographic is our audience. Adapting to this varying audience is how Orgami will serve this industry.

04 [IN]TRANSITION: BIRTHING CENTER Fall 2014, AIA Healthcare 48-Hour Charette, Team: Jamie Niver, Nicolette Brown, Rachel Plessing, Brett Virgl, Mustafa Shamel The AIA Healthcare Student Design Charrette is put on each year extending an invitation to four universities who possess a studio that specializes in healthcare. The universities then each select five students to carry out a rigorous forty-eight hours of conceptual design and planning. The project and program are given upon arrival; this year’s concept was a 150,000 square foot birthing center. Our team ultimately decided on the furthest east point of the site given for ease of accessibility to the site as well as visibility to the public. The active boardwalk running through the site is not interrupted but rather celebrated in redirecting users to the roof of and around the birthing center. With the placement of the site, it now becomes a destination for what was previously a dead-end to the boardwalk. The concept “[in]transition” is derived from the experience of the users as they are transitioning their lives in welcoming a new life into their family. This idea of transition is displayed in the overall form as it bridges the gap from land to water while considering the program, views, and the surrounding area.

From the moment the patient arrives, the transitions are emphasized; not only within the architectural form, but by the placement and finish material selection. The lobby condition is empathetic to the high anxieties our user may be experiencing. The expansive curtain wall highlights the view of the marina, while a friendly face greets them on a personal level. When the much-anticipated moment does arrive, the new family comes back to the same environment and experiences the final threshold of the transformation. For those mothers at a higher risk during pregnancy, the long-term stay suites open up onto a patio, which provides views of the marina and a chance for the mother to step out and reflect on the transformations that have occurred and those that are await her and her family. The floor pattern of the labor and delivery suites emphasizes the sacred moment when the baby takes its first breath. The rooms are all designed from a right-hand approach which research shows provides better patient satisfaction and staffing efficiencies.

05 SYNERGY Spring 2015, UNL London Seminar, Critic: Brian Kelly Throughout my semester abroad, I was attentive to what problems London was encountering and possible solutions to those problems. One of which was the city’s issue with overcrowding which has raised the cost of living exponentially. A large portion of the populationhas immigrated from all over the world. Synergy focuses on those young expats to form a self-sustaining community where each individual has the opportunity to use their own unique skill set to give them the opportunity to live rent-free while they work to establish their identity in their new city.

06 KINETIC: CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITAL Fall 2014, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Critic: Stacy Spale & Wayne Drummond Kinetic is a facility dedicated to energy integrated healthcare through community focused wellness and preventative healthcare programs, as well as unique, progressive architectural design. Consisting of an array of spaces which are both functional and engaging, the program weaves both the public and private into a functional network laid out as four wings stemming from a public node at the center. The kinetic motif articulates itself as an energy through motion which is evident throughout each design decision that takes place throughout the building. Energetic design draws its way throughout the building in plan through curved and chamfered walls as well as organic circulation routes. In elevation the design makes use of parametric and conceptual massing techniques to form organic owing architecture which creates a sense of movement and energy throughout the building. This metaphor of movement and energetic design relates closely to the new paradigm of healthcare today which focuses on wellness and the energy as core concepts to the advancement of public health.
