Preserving the theater’s legacy.

Our studio was honored to document and preserve the artifacts from the historic Utah Pantages Theater before its demolition, capturing its rich century-long legacy from vaudeville to cinema. Commissioned by the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency, we undertook a comprehensive assessment using video, photography, 3D scans, and drawings to meticulously record the theater’s opulent interiors and significant historical elements. This effort culminated in the creation of the Pantages Theater Archive, a detailed collection that offers a deep dive into the theater’s storied past.

In partnership with the University of Utah Marriott Library, we established a digital archive to ensure the theater’s legacy would be accessible to the public. This online repository invites users to explore the theater’s historical and decorative significance, providing a valuable resource for understanding and reflecting on the cultural impact of this iconic Salt Lake City landmark. Through this project, we aimed to democratize information and preserve the theater’s enduring heritage for future generations.

A modern mountain retreat.

From the onset, our client’s dream was clear - a haven of modern elegance nestled amidst the mountains of Soldier Summit, Utah. They envisioned a refuge that would embrace the natural beauty while encapsulating the comforts of contemporary living.

Throughout the project’s evolution, collaboration was key. Weekly meetings with the client enabled us to refine every detail, ensuring their unique vision was meticulously woven into the design. three offices

Versatile workspaces for everyone.

In a series of three distinct office projects, we skillfully merged tradition with innovation to meet each client’s specific needs. The first project in Salt Lake City catered to a major tech services company by integrating a bright, minimal palette and intuitive way finding to enhance both individual workstations and largescale training environments, accommodating a diverse range of employee needs and training sessions.

At Triangle Plaza in suburban Illinois, we transformed the space into a sanctuary of creativity and collaboration. Warm wood tones, vibrant green walls, and flexible conference areas were designed to foster both team interaction and focused work.

In our third project, we redefined the hybrid workspace concept for a client seeking to blend remote and traditional office work. This Chicago based project featured a polished glass entrance, a graceful reception area, and versatile conference rooms to balance comfort and functionality. The open-office area was designed to encourage both individual focus and collaborative brainstorming, with carefully chosen finishes and statement features that allowed for personalization and dynamic use.

Each project reflects our dedication to creating workplaces that harmonize creativity, practicality, and employee well-being.

studio crossing:master plan

Crafting the ultimate Park City center.

When our studio was first awarded the Studio Crossing project, we began by developing high level building footprints and a comprehensive site plan. The site, initially home to an existing film studio, presented plenty of room for opportunity. Collaborating closely with our clients to ensure we met all city and MPD requirements, I designed the Studio Crossing master plan with great attention to detail.

We approached the site design with careful consideration, addressing construction phasing, optimizing traffic flow, and maximizing the breathtaking mountain views. The master plan is thoughtfully laid out, featuring an affordable housing building, two mixed-use buildings, two retail buildings, fifty townhomes, and a condo building. A central feature of the plan is a dynamic community plaza that connects the retail spaces. I worked closely with the landscape architect to design this plaza, ensuring it would serve as a welcoming space for both future residents and the larger Park City community.

The design of the master plan was driven by a strong emphasis on amenities. To effectively showcase these features and secure city approval, I developed detailed amenity collage vignettes that vividly conveyed our vision. With the green light from the city, we eagerly transitioned to the next exciting phase of the Studio Crossing project: designing the buildings.

Where alpine adventure meets urban charm.

After the masterplan development, we began the design of the buildings. Spanning five construction phases, this project integrates retail space, market rate housing, and affordable housing into one interconnected neighborhood, anchored by a central community plaza.

Park City, Utah, has long been a destination renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene. As this historic town continues to evolve from its mining roots to a hub of tourism and luxury, the need for cohesive, multi-functional community spaces has become increasingly evident. Studio Crossing, an ambitious development project, is addressing this need through a carefully phased approach designed to enhance the town’s livability while preserving its unique charm.

Working on a small architectural team of three, we first designed and developed a four story, 104 unit, affordable housing building. Followed by two 15,000 sf retail buildings and two mixed-use buildings, each composed of 15,000 sf of retail space and 52 rentable apartment units. I carefully considered the merging of the historic mining town with the modern city for the overall look and feel of these five buildings.

phase 01: affordable housing

The first phase of the development addresses the recent Park City population boom with a four stories of affordable units, designed to foster a diverse and active community. The building’s modern design features natural textures providing homes that enhance outdoor lifestyles while integrating with city’s growing needs and values.

phase 02: retail

Studio Crossing’s second phase brings a vibrant retail center to the heart of the development, featuring over 30,000 square feet of versatile commercial space. The two buildings showcase sophisticated design with large windows and red brick, seamlessly integrating with the town’s natural and architectural aesthetics.

The development’s mixed-use building is designed to cater to both permanent residents and visitors, with affordable homes on upper floors and retail spaces below. The building’s refined mountain architecture, featuring natural materials and sleek design elements, reflects the lively and integrated community of Studio Crossing. phase 03: mixed use

academic work: shipwreck housing

Sustainable construction for workers.

Alang, India, is home to one of the world’s largest ship breaking yards, situated on the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat. Here, decommissioned ships from across the globe are beached and dismantled for recycling. This industry, while economically significant, comes with severe environmental and human costs. The ship breaking process generates substantial pollution, including hazardous materials like asbestos and heavy metals, which contaminate the beaches, waters, and local environment.

Workers in Alang face extremely harsh conditions. Many are migrant laborers who endure unsafe working environments and low wages. These conditions highlight the urgent need for improved housing solutions. Safe, sustainable, and affordable homes for these workers could significantly enhance their quality of life. My housing neighborhood design focuses on creating such homes, aiming to improve living standards while addressing the environmental challenges of the region.

sustainable materiality

Materiality of the buildings must be sustainable. The plastics that are removed from the ships are able to be melted down and cast into interlocking bricks. The bricks slide into the grooves from the next brick to form a sealed wall without any mortar. The metal canopies use metal from the ships.

simple assembly

The design is made of simple rectangles that can be assembled from 10 vertical columns, 18 horizontal beams, and the interlocking bricks. Like a kit of parts, these units can be easily assembled with the pieces provided.

Aside from the sleeping units, the canopy also holds the public amenities. These include an area for cooking, bathing, laundry, and toilets. These are able to be used for anyone in the neighborhoods. These neighborhoods create safer and healthier environments for the migrant workers while using sustainable sourced materials in order to reduce waste in Alang. the site

personal work: jo print

Sustainable printmaking.

In 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, I was freshly graduated and at a loss for the next steps. Architecture firms were on hiring freezes and I had little experience to be competitive in the field. I decided to dive head first into pursuing art. For three months, I spent my time learning to carve linoleum and begin printmaking. I wanted my art to be wearable, but felt very aware of the textile crisis our earth is facing today. In order to mitigate waste, I printed on upcycled fabrics. I purchased some through thrift stores and printed directly on clothing my friends would send me in the mail. The varying materials aided my knowledge in printing. Different fabrics required different pressures or amounts of ink. Certain colors interacted in ways I didn’t expect. Curing the ink with heat onto the fabric was essential for longevity and I had to get creative with how to maintain the print without removing any of the crisp quality.

With my new found spare time, I attended craft markets, gained a small following on social media, and sold on Etsy. The experience taught me a lot about my relationship with my art, production, and consumerism. I looked beyond the clothing as the only means of making sustainable decisions. Everything from the packaging, to my business cards, to the shipping vessels was considered. Paper prints were packaged using compostable plastic covers and upcycled cardboard from neighbors’ packages. I created business cards out of spare chipboard from old sketchbook covers. I crafted handmade mailers out of used brown paper grocery bags.
