The finish you can get from perfect binding, if you get all the components right, can make your work look and feel incredibly professional.
Perfect Binding
Perfec t Bindin g Perfect Binding, Unsewn, or cut-back binding is a method that is commonly used for magazines, paper back books and other formats which have a flat spine.
Materials & Tools Certain essential equipment is needed to perfect bind: - Pages of the book - Cover - PVA Glue - Book Press - Scrim - Bone Folder - Grey Board

Perfect Binding

1 Collect together your single sheets of paper. These sheets all need to be cut to exactly the same size.
Then gently sand paper the spine of the book to create rougher surface and using your finger, lightly apply a layer of glue to the spine of the book. Cut and place scrim on top of the spine of the book.

Cut two pieces of grey board to roughly the same size as the paper you have cut. Sandwich the stack of the paper with the grey board. Slot this into the book press and tighten it.

Add another thicker layer of glue, using your finger on top of the scrim and leave to dry for ten minutes. Loosen the press up and take the pages out.
By using your finger, lightly apply some more glue to the spine and press the cover, use the bone folder to press the cover onto the spine.

Cut the cover of the book to allow for the specified spine width & height of both sides of the cover.
Perfect Binding
By using a scalpel cut the grey board off the pages. You can smooth down the scrim & the edges of the spine by slightly sanding it down.
3 If you need to you can press the cover to the pages of the book by using the press. Trim each side of the book apart from the side where the spine is on using the trimmer machine.

To create a basic stab bound book, four holes, which is what Yotsumme Toji translates as, are made through all the pages of the side of one book. These holes are then sewn together with thread and a needle in the basic pattern.
Japanese Stab Binding
Stab_ Bindin g Japanese Stab binding, also known by it’s traditional name Yotsumme Toji, is a very simplistic book binding method.

Japanese Stab Binding

1 Collect together your single sheets of paper and cover. These sheets all need to be cut to exactly the same size.
Then mark out 4 holes, spaced out evenly, a few centimeters from where you want your spine to be.

Cut two pieces of grey board exactly the same size as the pages and the cover. You then need sandwich the pages and the cover with the grey board and bind them together using a clip.

You then need to punch some holes through the grey board by using a drill. *Use a drill bit which is slightly bigger than the thread you will be using.
2. Now, sew through the next hole along, away from the nearest edge of the book.

1. Sew the thread into the second hole in from either side, take the thread to the front of the book and sew through the same hole again.

Unclip and take the grey board off and then clip the cover and pages together again. Now you need to sew through the holes.

4. Thread into the final hole and wrap the thread around the side of the book for extra strength, once this done you can thread through any missed holes to add more strength until this pattern is achieved.

3. Sew the thread into the next hole along, take the thread to the front of the book and sew through the same hole again.

This type of stitching is probably the simplest way to bind a book and to make it even more simple you can staple the pages together. It is typically used to bind things such as notebooks, brochures, pamphlets and other small books.
Saddle Stitching
Saddle _ Stitch Saddle Stitching get it’s name from the inverted V fold on to which the pages of the book are placed. Sections are opened out and placed inside the other with a cover placed on the outside.

1 Collect together your single sheets of paper and cover. These sheets all need to be cut to exactly the same size. * You then need to line them all up perfectly

Saddle Stitching
Then fold the pages in half.
Stab three evenly spaced holes in the center of the page. * Make sure you go through all the pages.

Now you need start sewing the thread through all of the pages. Thread through the middle hole on either, the middle or the front.

3 Then sew through either of the other two holes and then sew through the final hole.

Now you can end the binding up by tying your thread into a knot.

Concertina Fold
Conce r_ tina A concertina, or also known as an accordion fold, comprises of two or more parallel Mountain & Valley folds in opposite directions and open out. This folding method enables many pages to be collapsed into a smaller size publication.

Make sure you cover is cut roughly 2mm bigger than the pages on each side, except from the bottom. -

PVA glue each side with a cross on. Once this is finished, stack the folded pages on top of each other, with the x touching each other. Then clip these together and leave to dry in a press for 10 minutes.
Concertina Fold
Fold your inside pages in half and draw a cross on the top and bottom on the outside side of the fold (This cross is there to signify where to glue later).

When the pages are all dry, stretch them out and check to make sure the pages haven’t been stuck together.
Glue the front and back pages to the front and back covers, respectively. The best way to do this is to place a sheet of newsprint underneath the page you need to glue.

Concertina Fold
Once one cover is attached, glue the other cover to the other end of the pages to complete the book.
