This year is truly a special event, marking the 25th Anniversary of the Bet on Red Sale! The Western States Red Angus Association Board of Directors has worked incredibly hard over the last year to ensure that this is an event that none of us will soon forget. If there’s any year I could encourage you all to make the trip to Reno, Nevada, this would definitely be the year.

It is a true privilege to have the opportunity to work with the best Red Angus breeders in the country, in helping to execute the Bet on Red Sale. A genuine highlight of my year is the chance to visit with each and every one of you; to get to know your families, programs, and goals a bit better and talk about the exciting future ahead.

We are so blessed to be a part of a breed that is experiencing positive and rampant growth. The demand for Red Angus cattle is stronger than it has ever been. Cattle prices are experiencing positive movement, and the future looks bright in the cattle markets for the next few years. There may be no better time to find that up-andcoming donor or acquire a few breed-leading replacements to strengthen the herd and provide high quality bulls to market over the next few years. Last year was certainly a record-breaking year for the sale, as a heifer calf consignment from Feddes Red Angus topped the sale at $30,000, selling to the Hansine Ranch of Pierre, SD. That Resource daughter had admirers from every corner of the country!

As the consignments have funneled in, and with a few herd visits taken, I can without a doubt say this year’s Bet on Red will prove to be the best event to date. I am humbled by the willingness of so many long-standing, reputable ranches to consign their very best replacement females to the auction block in Reno. Top quality cattle come from top quality breeders, and I would challenge you to find a better set of cattle, embryos, and semen anywhere in the country. This catalog is packed full of some of the best Red Angus cattle you can find. We welcome all to a weekend packed full of great people, and breed-leading Red Angus cattle.

We assume every time a member of the Western States Red Angus Association makes the commitment to donate a heifer, it isn’t quite as easy a process as it might seem. It’s not like you just wander out to the heifer pasture and pick out a female you could probably live without. This is a totally different deal. You are expected to trot out a female that no one in the family wants to part with.

That’s where we are with MCC Miss Reba 205. She is no accident. She is the product of a deliberate attempt on our part to obtain cows from the Brown Ranch that were granddaughters of KRN Reba’s Robin who produced the $65,000 heifer that sold at the NILE and also produced Grand Canyon and Major League.

What’s more, she is out of 9-Mile Franchise 8942, the top ageadvantaged bull from their fall-calving program and a bull sporting a 3% Gridmaster score plus 8% for weaning and 2% for yearling weight. 205 is stylish, with exceptional width and depth. She has a 9% weaning score, a 7% yearling weight, and an average daily gain at 7%. She also stands in the upper 20% for carcass weight and REA.

This year Rose McPhee wanted to do something very special in memory of her Granny Nellie McPhee who went to be with the Lord and the love of her life Roy McPhee June 25th 2022. Roy and Nellie McPhee were huge supporters every year of Bet on Red since the start, whether it was consigning animals or purchasing animals. Roy & Nellie instilled that same generosity in Rose and the value of giving back. Rose has selected this beautiful powerhouse of spring heifer

If you like investing for the long-term, you’ll want to take a look at this stylish heifer with a one percent score for stay. That’s probably because her dam, DKK Dazzle, is still going strong as she heads into her tenth year. Again, 208 comes from a heifer crop we think is our best ever. This young lady has caught our eye almost since the day she was born. What’s more she is from the 8-year old Traveler cow which just keeps producing exceptional calves year after year. She traces back to Damar Connie and like her pen-mate is out of Great Basin whose progeny have consistently been well-received. She offers a 4% marbling score and is in the upper one-third for ProS, Gridmaster, and calving ease direct. She weaned at 736 pounds. Like our other heifer, she spent most of the summer in the mountains, so she’s only been home for several months.

Tidybee 211K is one of the most exciting females we have ever produced, crossing all of our favorite sires… and you can tell she likes herself! The Tidybee clan is well known for its flashy, up headed, deep bodied look in a dark red package, and 211K is exactly that.

Her dam is an incredible young cow out of the many time champion One of a Kind 6129. That cow’s first calf by Rebelde 8703 was a class/ reserve division winner in Reno last year and will be back as a powerful bred heifer this year.

One of the young cows that made their way to Troy, Idaho was the mother of this absolute knockout of a Nova daughter. With a pedigree the most astute cattlemen can appreciate, combining Reckoning and Copenhagen here in BARH Kaydee 217 should tell you the elite cow that this heifer will mature into; feet, bag, and a maternal kind, she’ll check all the boxes. With the stunning Nova head and an absolutely, massive body type and rib cage, Garrett told us this heifer would have fit into his Flash & Function Sale perfectly. This cow family needs no introductions at the BOR… her dam is a powerful young 9 Mile Franchise daughter out of Chinook 6309, the Eldorado daughter that sold in the ’16 sale to Mackenzie Forbes and came back to be named the Futurity Champion at the ’17 Bet On Red. The sire, PIE Quarterback 789, has taken the breed by storm and is his progeny are some of the most desired genetics around the country. Clark Rosebud 1914-2243 is a very complete heifer both phenotypically and on paper. She carries great depth of body and capacity in a very attractive, feminine package. She stems from our very maternal Rosebud cow family which has produced many broody, productive, problem free cows in our herd.

This heifer’s dam is a beautiful 3yr old Seneca daughter who is doing a great job. She has an excellent udder and problem free feet. We are really liking what we are seeing in our Seneca daughters -they are looking to be some really good cows.

2243 is sired by the well-known Bieber Deep End. We really appreciate the style of our Deep End calves with their added performance and end product merit. We are very pleased with how he has matched on some of our cow families, and we think this heifer is a great example of that.

This is an exciting offering of one of the first C-T Reputation 0094 females to sell. She comes with an exceptionally feminine phenotype, beautiful front end and foot and leg set. When Garrett came out I hoped he would not find this heifer or her sister. We’ve been watching Clark Mattie 1201-1401 raise herd bulls, top heifers and a son standing at ABS for the last 6 years. When we had the opportunity to purchase embryos on her we jumped on it and this heifer is why. We were even more excited to be able to get embryos by Resource 137E whose progeny has taken the breed by storm. The phenotype she passes down is amazing. Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth.

Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, led a study that conrmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled ve years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.

The research team evaluated the effects of independent variables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, and Brahmaninuenced.

They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.
