Welcome to our Annual Bull Sale. Thank-you for considering our program! We are very appreciative of all our repeat customers and to the new customers we get to meet along the way.We are very thankful to be in the cattle industry and offering our 38th selection of bulls to you, our customers. With the challenges of finding enough feed for the winter months, culling herds and planning for the next few years, the cattle producers have become very resourceful and open minded. The cattle herd in western Canada should be the highest quality it’s ever been, after all the tough culling decisions that have been made. “New” feed rations and applications have been tested resulting in a very resilient and determined mindset for producers. Here’s to hoping for a 2022 that can put some feed back into the feed stack and restore some water holes. Our program continues to focus on the true maternal side of Angus Cattle. Our cowherd is based on the moderate framed mother cow, with big capacity and easy fleshing ability. Foot quality and udder structure are constantly being criticized and longevity is key. Calving ease and moderate birth weights are a big part of our breeding program. There is a large selection of bulls that can be safely used on first calf heifers. Birth weight, gestation length, genetics and structure have all been considered when determining the calving ease rating on the bulls. The bulls have been treated, and fed same as always here at the farm. Feed consists of cereal silage, alfalfa silage, cut hay, barley and corn. The bulls were weaned and weighted on October 20, 2021. Culling and selection continues right up until sale day. There were 90 bulls calves that made it to weaning time and 54 bulls have been selected to be for sale. Consider this your invite to attend the sale on Saturday April 2 at 2pm. Complimentary lunch with be served at 12pm. Bulls will be penned inside sale morning and during the sale. Leptin is associated with increased fat deposition in beef cattle and is responsible for regulating energy by suppressing the intake of nutrients by an animal. Ranchers seek to identify animals with the mutated “Leptin T” allele, with the ideal animal being “Leptin TT” (those that inherit a leptin ‘T’ allele from each parent). These animals exhibit increased appetite, resulting in a subsequent increase in marbling and fat deposits. Whether you are selecting for weight gain, milk production, or meat quality, leptin plays a role. Such preferable characteristics can be achieved through selecting bulls with a mutated “Leptin T” allele with the ideal genotypes being “Leptin TT”. These “Leptin TT” genotype animals have the ability to finish for slaughter approximately 30 days faster with an ADG of >3 lbs, while also producing a higher rate of ‘AAA’ Canadian grade beef. Milk production is also connected to the leptin gene, as cattle with “Leptin T” alleles have been shown to have increased milk production of 1.5kg than “Leptin CC” cows, while also turning off significantly heavier beef calves with weaning weights up to 271bs heavier. Therefore taking home a bull with either a CT or TT result allows your to maximize the genetic potential in your herd. 287 Day Gestation A tank of a bull. Long, thick, wide chested huge performance. Starting off at 100lbs. he should have some good performance, and this guy does. Dam always throws a bit more birth weight, but this guy surprised us. For whatever reason, every once in a while there’s a surprise. Recommended for cows, thought we don’t expect him to throw calves that are as big as he was.

The year 2021 sorrowfully past and done, as mother nature sadly did battle, refusing to rain, the sun glowed with pain, as it melted cowboys and cattle. Scientists raged that climates had changed, carbon foot print is a crime, but history, has related to me, that climates been a changing since Noah’s time. The summer sizzled and grasses frizzled, into the prairie ground, no rain did we see, for months would it be, so hay was not to be found. Prices did slip on cows that did strip, the earth of sparsely burnt grass, we kept them paired, as long as we dared, hoping calf prices would last. The cull in the fall was tough on us all, what to sell and who to keep, young girls should stay, send the old on their way, it’s hard when bloodlines run deep. There’s old 66U a patriarch true, her calves are the ones that endure, it’s preg testing time, the truth’s on the line, the vet says she’s in calf for sure. Feed stacks are trim next years future looks dim, cows have to be sold, young cows should stay, no time to delay, there just ain’t no feed for the old. In the trailers rolled for the culled and the old, to the auction they’re on their way, I watched them sell, the pain started to swell, years of hard work faded that day. Then 66U entered into view, as the auctioneer beckoned a bid, it stopped when it started, a lump in my throat parted, to them her worth silently hid. The pain did endure her real worth was sure, more than those buyers could see, as I raised my palm, I spoke very calm, “that girl will go home with me.” It’s tough to let go of old friends you know, I’ll just take her back to our place, I backed up the truck, and with any luck, the boys won’t see the hurt on my face. The loading crew joked as that old girl poked, her way past the trailer door, But the tear in my eye, was hid when the sky, opened up and it started to pour.

Should any Burnett bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, we will replace him with a bull as close to quality as possible or a credit given toward another purchase of a Burnett bull. If you have a problem with your bull, please notify us immediately. We will work with you as long as the bull has not been mismanaged. SEMEN RIGHTS: Burnett Angus and Tarentaise reserve the right to collect semen for in-herd-use, at our expense and buyer convenience, on any bull in the sale. INSURANCE: Will be available sale day. DELIVERY: We realize it is not always possible to take your purchase the day of the sale. We will gladly retain your new purchase at the Ranch and look after it until arrangements can be made or delivery made. All USA purchases will be retained at the ranch.
