Welcome to the 40th edition of the Burnett Bull Sale. We are truly thank-full to all past customers for supporting our operation for the past 40 years. Optimism in the industry has never been at this level. The North American cowherd will take time to regain its numbers, in the meantime we can enjoy some exciting times in the industry! I think we are due for some rewarding years to come.

The offering of bulls is very consistent from start to finish. The bulls have been treated same as other years, weaning occurred on October 11 for one group of calves and November 2 for the later born bulls. We continue to select for high volume, easy keeping females that are hands off. Selecting calving ease bulls by AI and walking bulls has been a big part of the “hands off”. There are many calving ease bulls on offer that are suitable for breeding heifers. This isn’t by accident but by design. Our breeding program has focused on these traits for many years now, and we are really starting to recognize the consistency of the calves, both at birth and now, as yearling animals. Calving ease bulls with plenty of performance and eye appeal.

For the past 16 years we have focused on calving ease when selecting bulls for AI and natural service. Birth weight is a part of calving ease, combined with other factors such as gestation period, pedigree and environment. For your convenience we have rated the bulls based on all 3 factors.

The Meaning

I happened to sift through my archives and came across this poem that I wrote many years ago. In reflection I believe it holds more truth today than ever so we’ll share it with you. Upon writing this prelude I read the passage of Proverbs 10: the proverbs of Solomon - A very wise King who God favored and promised to grant him one thing – any thing he desired. Solomon wisely asked for knowledge so he could rule over his people properly.

Here is Proverbs 10: A wise man maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. In Canada as in most countries of the world we could certainly use a Solomon.

I met a cowboy outside a store one day whittling on a hunk of wood.

I asked him of philosophy, life’s events and what made great times really good.

He said, Son life is like shaping this old chunk of wood from one end to the other. It’s got to be sculptured with the proper tools starting with a father and a mother.

People spend money they don’t have on things they don’t need to impress folks they don’t even know. They forget life’s meaning, family, God, a dog for a friend and taking time to watch kids grow.

God made man and woman to join together, create a family, carrying one generation into another. It’s important in raising kids to give them someone to look up to and be proud of, a Dad and a mother.

Children need time to play, dream and fantasize, walk along with mother nature while they’re young and still can. Don’t rush them to get old and tempted with worldly ways, you’ll blink and youth has changed into a man.

See you have to enjoy life, shape it the proper way, make sure all the pieces tightly fit. You can’t buy you way through, money won’t buy happiness, it just lets you explore more for it.

Most important is integrity and truth, don’t short change yourself, above all be faithful to the core. There are no sure short cuts, stand proud and strong and leave the devil knocking at the door.

When you shape your life whittle it true and straight, don’t give into the jeering of the crowd.

Remember your parents along with the love of God above, be sure that in you they would be proud.

Semen Testing

It has become a must to make sure that the customers are purchasing bulls that measures up to meet their needs. The bulls are most often compromised because of environment or weather and being tested before fully mature. Most times they are evaluated many months before they will be turned in with their mating partners. However every year we get the job accomplished.

Marketing bulls in this purebred business takes extra measures that’s for sure, semen testing’s become the norm, things got to be working correct and secure.

There’s proper procedure of measuring, probing, collecting and microscoping, slides are prepared and semen evaluated, for a passing grade we’re a hoping.

The sortin’ crew gathers the bulls to send ‘em up the chute, the clients are penned and anxious to prove they’re a breeding brute.

Then in strolls the boss accompanied by a young lady with manner of perfection the boys poke one another with sorting sticks and nod in her direction.

One lad pulls in his belly, another pushes out his chest, the third checks the zipper on his pants as he pulls down his vest.

They check out her conformation and how she stretches those coveralls so tight, Their eyes a glimmer, minds a wandering maneuvering to get in her sight.

She must be the bosses daughter or maybe a niece, she’s sure enough a looker, But why would he bring her here, that semen testing procedure’s able to spook’er.

Then chivalry died as the boss announced: Boys you better do this job right, this here’s the new vet, when she measures testicles she pulls that tape extra tight.

TERMS OF SALE: Cash or cheque payable to the Clerk on Sale Day. Satisfactory settlement must be made before cattle are released. Animals become the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold, however, every precaution will be taken for the animals welfare.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: All registration papers will be transferred to the buyer for each registered animal after full and complete payment is made.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over any printed matter. Any disputes on bidding will be settled by the auctioneer.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE: Our breeding program is as important to us as it is to you. All bulls have completed a breeding soundness evaluation. Should any Burnett bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, we will replace him with a bull as close to quality as possible or a credit given toward another purchase of a Burnett bull. If you have a problem with your bull, please notify us immediately. We will work with you as long as the bull has not been mismanaged.

SEMEN RIGHTS: Burnett Angus and Tarentaise reserve the right to collect semen for in-herd-use, at our expense and buyer convenience, on any bull in the sale.

INSURANCE: Will be available sale day.

DELIVERY: We realize it is not always possible to take your purchase the day of the sale. We will gladly retain your new purchase at the Ranch and look after it until arrangements can be made or delivery made. All USA purchases will be retained at the ranch. We will arrange for health export status to be completed.

LIABILITIES: All persons who attend the Sale do so at their own risk, and the owners along with sales personnel assume no liabilities, legal or otherwise for any accidents that may occur.

Raising purebred cattle and selling breeding stock has it’s challenges. I often realize that semen testing bulls is one of the most frustrating jobs.
