Minburn Angus was founded by Harold Warrilow in 1939, since then we have been raising registered Black Angus cattle just northwest of Minburn, Alberta. To say that Angus weren’t highly sought after at the time would be an understatement but I think we all know what it’s like…. When you get the bug it just hangs on. With the 5th generation coming up on the ranch today the love of not only being a good cattlemen but a steward of the land in trying to look after the cows, land and ourselves. The template of needing a good cow herd started right off the hop as selling Angus bulls in that era was a challenge. 73 years later we are still striving to make the cows as good as we can along the way but we feel there is a type that has been developed and that has served us well. Even with a top quality cow behind every herd bull we feel the need for performance and doability to stay relevant in this ever changing market.
MINBURN ANGUS PICK OF THE BULL CALVES
Over the years honing in on the cow with the right bull on her whether that was in our herd or on herdbulls purchased has always been important if the bulls daughters are going to look like his dam. Recent herdsires that we find raising some top females in our herd is a DWW 57E, Poss Element son that really leaves a set of wedgy daughters with great design from their great front ends to their big barrel while finishing with plenty of width on their hooks and pins. Just calving his second set of daughters this year has us impressed. Eastondale Innovation 65E is leaving a set of daughters of the same outline but with just a little more frame. 2017 we stepped out and purchased an interest in SAV Renovation and 5 years later we are seeing the fruits of that decision. In his second calf crop DWW 25H was born and he raised the bar yet again carrying a little extra frame, balance and performance. 25H was sold to Rhodes Red Angus in South Dakota at $35,000 and his first set of calves this year look fantastic! You will find in our program that the cattle are similarly bred as we have used multiple sons to add in a cow family that we think a lot of.

We are a hands-on, multi-generation program making use of A.I. (and embryo transplants) as well as home-raised and purchased walking sires. Mark and Shane proposed “a Masterpiece sale heifer” should be consigned after viewing our family’s cows with heifer calves at side, during the SK Summer Angus tour. Somewhere along the line the anti was upped and this “pick of the crop” opportunity unfolded to open the gate on fifty plus SSA prefixed heifers. Like always we want to represent our program with top end females, and that is exactly what we are doing here. 52F the dam of this heifer is one of the most exciting building blocks one can find. She is a big barreled, moderate framed, soft made Merit Genesis 1077 daughter with excellent feet and udder structure. 52F has also had a very successful show career wining several shows for my nephew Dylan at Freyburn as a heifer calf and bred heifer. This awesome cow family started for us when we purchased the grand dam 5Y as a bred from Kary Family Farmsl. 5Y is still very active in our program to date, its no surprise that she raised the high Selling Bronc son in our recent bull sale. We don’t do a lot of embryo work, but when we do its for a damn good reason. Her sire, Rippin is well known for being part of the 2019 pen of 3 Champion bulls at Agribition as well a top 3 finalist in the Saskatchewan sweepstakes that same year. He was later purchased by John and Apryl Grant as the high selling bull in our 2020 bull sale. However, I feel Rippin’s greatest achievements are yet to come in these incredible daughters he’s producing.

Kandy is super elegant in her design and will turn a lot of heads in the ring and out on grass. Barabara 20K is a heifer that is definitely worth the look over! Beautiful and elegant front end on this Coleman Bravo daughter, which should come at no surprise there. She follows that with a long spine and a thick wide top. Finishing off with a strong set of feet and legs. Her dam, Barbara 21E, is a powerful Wilbar Cavalry daughter that we just love. Cavalry’s legacy is cemented in for producing long, thick, good footed, perfect udder females that will last the test of time. Barbara 20K has the stop and look at me presence. I believe she could go into the ring and be very competitive, but more importantly she’s got the tools to be a front pasture cow!!
With this being our first consignment to the masterpiece sale we wanted to make it a great one. I think this is as good of a heifer as I’ve raised. She’s out of a beautiful young sting daughter I bought from Eastondale in the touch of class sale. Add in the power and style of Firebrand and you’ve got a no miss show heifer with a strong productive cow family behind her. She’s been shown very successfully, winning banners and buckles alongside her mother as a pair, as well as individually. Topping off the show ring success with champion Angus heifer calf at the Perdue cattle show. She’s a heifer that has it all, the look, the pedigree, and she’s dead quiet, perfect for a junior.

We decided to try something new, we said what better then going to Black Angus. The one we wanted to raise is a South Point calf. So here she is ERF 6K comes from the highly productive Conley South Point 8362 and when we asked Bryan Willms what would be the best cross he sent us his Mayflower family. Once we had our heifer calf we knew this one would be ticket to get into the Masterpiece sale. This long body stylish heifer catches everyone’s eye and we excited to see what the future holds for this gem of a heifer.

I have the utmost confidence in this heifer calf to be a front pasture female, she is the type that will raise powerful herd bulls!

When the opportunity came up to put a female in the Masterpiece sale I immediately knew I was going to consign the very best heifer calf I had. 5K has been a standout right from day one, a stout soft made moderate heifer sired by Cowtrax Red River 21H, whose first calves are about to be weaned and have surpassed the expectations we had. Red Rivers mother, Belle 20Y is one of my all time favourite cows in the Cowtrax program, and i’m super excited to watch the females from 21H grow into cows. 58D is a BarE-L All Star 7A daughter that was acquired in dam out of the Sandy Bar Dispersal, she is a moderate framed tank of a cow who has an udder that is second to none and I believe that 5K will be the replica of her mother!

3. AS SOON AS AN ANIMAL IS SOLD, it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser.
9. BREEDERS GUARANTEE: The terms standard with the Canadian Angus Association shall apply. Beyond that: (a) All animals sold are guaranteed breeders. (b) All bred females have been declared safe in calf by a qualified veterinarian. Pregnant females are guaranteed pregnant a minimum of ninety (90) days. (c) All mature females raised a calf in this year. (d) All calendar year heifers are guaranteed open at time of sale. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after the date of sale, if, in healthy condition, may be returned to seller at buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller, at his option, may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal value in full settlement and satisfaction of ALL claims. Any complaints regarding fertility of any animal in this sale shall be directed to the Contributor. All complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the time specified above and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health. Any calendar year heifer calf shown and/or flushed by the purchaser is no longer guaranteed a breeder under this paragraph #9.
1. TERMS: Unless otherwise previously arranged with an individual consignor, terms of this sale are cash payable in Canadian funds at the prevailing rate of exchange on the day of sale. All cattle may be held until the selling agent is satisfied that suitable arrangements for payment are made.
12. INSURANCE: Livestock insurance and/or transit insurance will be available. Insurance rep, Larry Toner, will be on-site Sale Day.
13. TESTING: All cattle will be held at sellers’ expense until all necessary health requirements are met.
6. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the Auction Stand at sale time, and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.
CONDITIONS&TERMS
4. BIDS: Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder. There will be no by-bidding by the owner or anyone authorized by him, however, the owner will be permitted one protective bid.
2. IN THE CASE OF ILLNESS, a veterinarian will be called by the Sales Manager if deemed necessary, but any expense involved will be the responsibility of the CONSIGNOR until the animal is sold and the PURCHASER thereafter.
7. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A CANADIAN certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement is made.
5. DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.
