On behalf of all of us at Pugh Farms we want to welcome you to our Annual Spring Sale. We are pleased to once again be working with the staff at Dryland Cattle Trading Corp to showcase our genetics. We want to thank them for their professionalism and support over the years. We appreciate all that the staff does for us on sale day and the days leading up to the sale. We count ourselves fortunate to also have a number of these individuals as customers as well. We believe that our seed stock business is driven by the operations of our commercial customers. Our customer’s needs and goals are what shapes and drives our program, as we recognize that it is our job to add value where our genetics can to your breeding herds. We can’t say thank you enough to you all, for having faith and support in our program. We are thrilled that we get to work with so many exceptional people, and are always so impressed with the quality of cattle, innovative ideas, and excellent conversation you present to us when we are visiting and touring your places. We want to also thank Larry and Vicki of L&V Red Angus for consigning to the sale for the last number of years. When Larry approached me with the idea of not selling bulls in the sale, we reflected on how fortunate we were to be able to have a working relationship spanning two decades. What started with us custom calving some cows for them turned into trading genetics back and forth, marketing those genetics together and forging a great friendship along the way. Thank you guys! We would also like to thank our families and neighbours for all the help and lending hands that are given throughout the year. We often remark on how fortunate we are to have great neighbours and to get to live and operate in the community that we do. Our family is integral in the operations of our place whether it is the day to day work, or the management of the cattle we pasture out west near Amanda’s folks, or the coming and operating of equipment with us in our peak seasons. Without their support and helping hands we wouldn’t be able to operate the way that we do. Thank you for continuing to work with us and support us. We also want to thank the folks who have worked alongside us on the place throughout the last year. Cody, Colby, and Hayley; thank you for your dedication, attention to detail, and great attitude while working here. Once again this year we have a great set of customer commercial heifers consigned. These heifers are the top rung in terms of quality and they are the kind that will go out and work efficiently and productively for years to come. Make sure to check out the listing in the catalog and contact any of the consignors for more info. The athletic development techniques we utilize in our management for our bulls are outlined in the catalog at the start of each group. Our bulls have been developed with the intention for them to be able to graze and convert on high forage rations. We do utilize concentrates in our rations but in such a way that the cattle can optimize their forage and gain efficiently. Chelated mineral is utilized to further aid in development. We believe that bulls are athletes. They need to have natural muscle bred in, be tested environmentally to further lean muscle development, and be fed or grazed in such a way that they will last for a multitude of breeding seasons. Some of the traits we continue to breed for are calving ease, maternal strength, structural integrity, and an abundance of weaning performance as we feel cattle bred in this way can accelerate in a multitude of environments and add value to our customers operations. One change to the catalog this year is the lack of Residual Feed Intake data. The limitation on the data was not by choice, but because of a hail storm at the facility we are testing at causing a shortage of forage to be fed to the bulls. This stopped the test from happening in 2019 for us, but we have full intentions of rolling back into the process of RFI testing our entire offering for our 2021 sale. We believe that if we can continue to find more and more lines of cattle within our operation that carry a higher level of feed efficiency genetically. Doing this allows us to continue to find more ways to add extra value to the bottom line of our customers by helping them to reduce their feed and grazing costs. One other change in the catalog is the absence of Hereford bulls. We decided that we would offer our Hereford bulls privately out of the pen moving forward. The decision came from the realization that the small number of Hereford bulls we were marketing through the sale wasn’t enough to draw a number of buyers, and we felt that there are a number of sales around marketing larger quantities of them that are a great option for folks to sort through. If you are needing Hereford genetics and would like to access them through a private treaty setting feel free to contact us and we can inform you on the options of what we have available. Modern, efficient, heavy producing, sound structured, “built to last” cattle are the kind we are striving to produce. We believe that that to be able to continue to lower input we cannot lower, limit, or compromise output in terms of saleable pounds of calf crop for you to market from our genetics. We raise our cattle in much the same way as you do, and use our own commercial cattle as a measuring stick to measure where our seed stock genetics have the ability to consistently add value. We are immersed in each part of the development of these genetics from research, breeding, calving, raising, feeding, culling, marketing and everything in between. If you need or would like more information on the cattle available in the sale, feel free to contact us anytime. We offer sight unseen purchasing and have many customers utilizing this program. All it takes is a phone call and the time to discuss your genetic needs. We then will provide you with the information to help you decide which bulls will work for you. If you are comfortable with utilizing online bidding DLMS is our trusted broadcaster and the sale can be viewed allowing you to participate in the auction on their platform. Preferably, of all the options, is for you to be our guest and join us on sale day for lunch, take in the sale and stay to visit with us after. To the folks looking into our program for the first time, we appreciate your consideration of our genetics and look forward to the opportunity to work with you. To our existing customers, we want you to know that your ongoing support of our program, your continued friendship, and the information you provide us is invaluable and we are glad to call you our peers, allowing us to work with outstanding cattlemen and cattlewomen year in and year out. Be our guest and join us March 10 in Veteran for the 2020 edition of our Spring Bull and Replacement Heifer Sale!

OUR BULL DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY We believe that bull development should be done in such a way that a bull’s longevity is not compromised. What we
mean by this is that we start the long term development of our bulls from birth and stay with our plan for the development of muscle and soundness of structure straight through; preparing them for a lifetime of breeding. We calve our spring calving cows on grass in large pasture groups. The cattle need to walk for feed and water allowing the baby calves the opportunity to travel with their mothers, starting their structural development at an early age. Our pasture distribution finds these bull calves on their mothers in the summer, grazing river hills where the elevation change is steep. This further allows them to harden and develop muscle as they travel for water at the river and graze the top land in the cool of the evenings. The bull calves continue grazing with their mothers into late fall/early winter where they will often start on stockpiled native grass and end up on oat swath grazing or corn. They are offered a water source from a well in the yard which is often half to three quarters of a mile away allowing for more movement to aid in their athletic development. When the bulls are weaned off their mothers we do this as low stress as possible weaning them into large pens with fence line access to their mothers. Their bed pack is maintained on one side of the pen on lower ground with the water tire on the other side also on lower ground. This constant but gradual hill climbing everyday further allows for their muscle development as they mature. The first winter they are fed a TMR ration for moderate gain, utilizing chelated mineral to meet their dietary needs. The bulls are then turned to grass in the spring where they run in one contemporary group. Their pasture is utilized for development as it again has a large hill running through it with the optimal grazing being the farthest point in the pasture from the water source. The bulls will stay on grass through the fall. When the tame grass dries down and the protein value is lowered in it, we will start supplementing the bulls with a protein source in troughs. This allows us foot access to the bulls, further aiding them in the interaction with us and providing us the opportunity to assess daily temperament. Once the ground freezes hard, the bulls are brought into a large development pen where they are started on a high forage TMR feed source utilizing a high level of chelated minerals. They are developed in this pen where they share a fence line with cows. This fence line sharing provides them with stimulated movement all throughout the winter again helping them to further develop muscle and vital organ capacity. We believe that our bulls should be athletic, perform, and last. These are a few things that we are doing each year to provide you with these breeding pieces.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL MO ANGUS, Mona Howe and Family | Irvine, AB You know cattle are raised right when they transition seamlessly from one set of environmental conditions to the next. This has been my experience with the Pugh Farms bulls and females I have acquired over the years. These animals have matched or exceeded the level of production of the homeraised animals in my herd. This is not an easy task in the often hot and dry conditions of southern Alberta, not to mention the rough terrain they are expected to thrive in. A true testament to the soundness, functionality and longevity in the Pugh breeding program along with their commitment to low input management style and customer satisfaction.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL TELLER BAR LD RANCH LTD, Luc Tellier and Family | Bonnyville, AB We have been utilizing Pugh Bulls for nearly three decades on our ranch south of Bonnyville. We find the success with the bulls comes from the fact that they last. The bulls we have bred with here have often only been replaced because they get too old! This compliments the extended grazing goals of our program and the longevity of our cowherd.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL SWEARNGIN ANGUS, Craig Guffey and Family | Lawerence, Kansas We have found in a lifetime of breeding cattle, that utilizing cattle from similar management and environmental pressure, yields more cattle that work when looking for outside genetics. That’s the key to the success we have found in the ease of transition that our Pugh Genetics have made here in Kansas.

YEARLING BULL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Our Yearling Bull
development program carries the same thought process as developing our coming two year old bulls. Development for athleticism starts a month after birth when these calves are turned with their mothers to an 80 acre pasture. This pasture allows the opportunity for hill side travel when the snow moderates and the days are longer, seeing the cows traveling in this larger area. In early spring these winter calving pairs are turned to a river hill pasture of stockpiled native grass with seeded crested wheatgrass. The wheatgrass is seeded on an aggressive slope where it greens early in the spring, promoting the cattle to graze up hill and down. This hardens and starts significant muscle development in the calves. When summer hits, the winter born pairs are turned to a large native grass pasture in a wide part of the river valley. Travel is key to find optimal grazing so this pasture is utilized to promote movement and stamina to gain on hard grass. As the summer progresses, the pairs are rotated closer to a yard with working corrals. The final pasture they see on their mothers is all native grass with three significant coulees running through it. The up and down hill movement of the cattle as they travel this pasture further tests structural soundness and hardens the muscle pattern on the calves. When weaning comes, we utilize quiet wean nose paddles to put as little stress on the calves as possible. After a short on cow weaning period the bull calves are hauled back to the main yard where they are grazed on alfalfa/brome paddocks throughout the fall. They are supplemented with a protein source in troughs during this time as like the coming Two Year Olds, this allows us the ability to assess temperament. When winter sets in, they are then moved to a large development pen and started on a high forage TMR ration utilizing chelated minerals to optimize lean muscle development. We believe that like the older bulls these yearlings need to last and cover cattle on large pastures. They are hardened and know how to forage extensively.

BULL NUTRITION When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life gives you never-ending rain, make…Silage! Despite challenging weather last summer, the 2019 forage quality was excellent and plentiful at Pugh Farms. High quality silage has allowed for growing bulls with only moderate supplementation, with a mixture of oats and barley. This is key for developing structure, fertility and soundness, andi proving the longevity in breeding bulls. To enhance growth, fertility and hoof-health, a customized mineral and vitamin supplement was formulated to match the 2019 forages. Feeding with a Total Mixed Ration ensures consistency in delivery of all nutrients, as every mouthful of feed is the same throughout the feed-bunk. I believe that feeding cattle SHOULD be boring – gradual ration changes and consistency day in and day out are what builds EXCITING results. Feeding bulls for long-term success is a balance of science and the basics – the foundation of the Pugh Farms reputation. Jack Fisher M.Sc., P.Ag.
