Redefined Red Angus Female Sale

WelcomeAs I begin to write this welcoming to the 2022 Red, Redefined Sale, it’s 3:04 am and I find myself driving through the night towards Western Oregon, so I can be on site in the morning to photo some Bet on Red consignments. Somehow, I’ve convinced Derrick Wood to help share the miles so that I can work on this catalog to meet our print deadline. The excitement and passion I have to make this first female sale at the homeplace in Niobrara, Nebraska a success, is the only thing keeping me awake. Earlier this week, 48 of the 50 lots in Red, Redefined had been pictured, 50 detailed footnotes were just written, and now I’m onto assembling the final pieces. I’m probably the busiest I’ve ever been, yet thinking about the upcoming offering and the adrenaline of trying to get everything done in a timely manner keeps my mind bright through the final two hours of our twelve hour drive.

Anything Jeff and Tami Keller do, they do to the highest degree. They desired to become the best within a breed of cattle they fell in love with almost a decade ago, and with their perseverance, patience, and determi nation, I truly believe their herd sits among the top of the breed in North America. The passion and dedication NIO has to make progress within the Red Angus breed is unwavering. Each spring brings a new calf crop, and we have been incredibly fortunate over the past few years to see forward momentum every single time. Jake and I have worked hard to do our jobs as a Farm Manager & Marketing Manager to help keep Niobrara Red Angus headed in a positive position. To be honest, it’s been fun as hell to watch our dedicated efforts translate into success for the Keller Family & Niobrara Red Angus itself.

The first Red, Redefined Sale was held in 2020 in an online format, where a group of our best heifer calves were marketed. Since its inception, we’ve had in mind to utilize this as our production sale; an in person, live auction at the ranch in Niobrara, marketing the female seedstock of our operation. It’s been a blast recalling all the information we’ve gathered on all these cows throughout the years. There is truly something for everyone, and the level of honest, phenotypic quality in this group of Red Angus females will likely go unparalleled this fall.

The Team

of Niobrara Red Angus, grew up in Niobrara, Nebraska. In their years around home, they grew up on Tami’s family’s cattle ranch, Leader Angus Farm, helping to complete the day to day of ranch responsibilities. Years later, after college and law school and establishing residence in Lincoln, NE, the Keller’s knew they wanted a connection back to their roots; also wanting their three boys Sam, Jack and Ben to have a chance to be involved in agriculture. Thus, Niobrara Red Angus was established. Although they are not on-farm most business days, the effort and team they have developed, they feel is second to none.

JACOB BATHKE, RANCH MANAGER, resides and oversees Niobrara Red Angus each day. Born and raised in Niobrara, he is the fourth generation to graduate from Niobrara High. He manages and oversees the daily operations of the ranch, and is responsible for their wellbeing. He says he owes most of his cattle knowledge to Kent Snowdon, who got him started in the cattle industry about 15 years ago. Jacob graduated from Northeast Community College with an Associates Degree in Agronomy. He’s grateful for the opportunity to work for the Keller Family, and to be able to work with such high quality seedstock. He would also like to acknowledge and thank his brother Shane, and other friends and family that help him time to time throughout the year.

MEG PENROD, OFFICE MANAGER, resides in Lincoln Nebraska with her husband Tanner, daughter Sloan, and their extra large sweet golden doodle Foster. Meg received her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she spent most of her time throwing pottery. She can often be found drawing, painting or creating some work of art in the middle of the night. She spent the last 12 years working in interior design but her love for people and animals is what drew her to work for Niobrara Red Angus.

GARRETT KNEBEL, MARKETING MANAGER, resides in Bozeman, MT with his wife Katelyn. There they own and operate Storey Hereford Ranch & Harmony Hill, a progressive Hereford & Red Angus operation focused on seedstock for the commercial cow-calf operator. With a degree from Oklahoma State University, Garrett’s main responsibilities for Niobrara Red Angus include marketing, consulting, breeding, and seedstock selection. In his spare time, he travels the country visiting with fellow Red Angus breeders and judging livestock shows.

In the simplest of description, our long-term goal is to bridge the divide in the Red Angus breed between correctly structured “phenotype” cattle with a disadvantage in the availability of genetic data and information, with the typical, number-chasing U.S. Red Angus cow; genetic history and contemporaries of plenty, with a compromised foot structure that has simply been overlooked for far too many years.

In our extensive travels, we have seen herds of all different shapes and sizes, priorities and unimportance’s, trends and age-old beliefs. Many, not all, of the cattle that appear to be the most elite in the Red Angus database, are in actuality some of the poorest footed, worst structured cattle in the breed that have compromised longevity. We are led to believe it’s because decisions have been made in a swivel chair, and not in the middle of their cowherd. Breeders that have mated cows based on the Planned Mating calculator on the Red Angus website have looked past the visual appraisals that HAVE to take place. Top 1% doesn’t mean guaranteed to breed for 5 years. More times than not, their feet are genetically debilitating and you find them shuffling in when the cow herd is gathered in the fall because their toes have grown crossed and they’re in pain.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve found cattle that prove their longevity. Feet are not trimmed, cows live through their entire productive life and actually make you a greater return on that initial investment. BUT, if you were to look at their EPDs on paper, you may find yourself saying, “Why would I breed to this cow-killing, nanny-goat performing creature with the marbling of a Belgian Blue?” In reality, these cattle calve, perform, and grade equal to or even better than the data-focused cattle that clearly display a strong advantage in their genetic profile. Our thought is, why would I buy a bull perceived to be in the Top 1% for the Herdbuilder Index, when his toes are mal-shaped and I’m going to have to worry about him breeding enough cows to keep me in business?!

In closing, our goal is the crossover of these distinct sectors of the breed. Our cattle may never be Top 1% for a certain trait, but if they prove to have longevity and sire calves that guarantee the buyer gets a solid return on his investment, then that’s when we know we are headed down the correct path. We are following that path now; identifying and utilizing certain bulls or cows that we know provide enough problem-free longevity and profitability for a solid ROI. However, it takes time; lots of time to identify those individuals. And it’s our goal here at Niobrara Red Angus to be able to offer that kind to you.

Cattle producers sell their feeder and slaughter cattle based on what they actually weigh on a scale. When investing in seedstock, it is important to be provided with actual performance data rather than only computer generated projections that change weekly, can fluctuate dramatically and are only as relevant as the accuracy values behind them. EPDs are a selection tool but alone do not create great cattle; real breeding progress requires breeding beyond the numbers for real-world production traits. Selections and matings based on feet, udders, fertility and pounds; that has created consistency, progress, and lessened the cost of mistakes.

of Red, Redefined a truly memorable event, we knew we needed to offer the opportunity

leading-edge of progress within the Red Angus breed. What better direction to take, than the most phenotypically-elite, jaw-dropping Red Angus female that we purchased from the 2019 Complete Herd Dispersal of U2 Ranch. To this day, I cannot mention a Red Angus cow that is more attractive than U-2 Lass 465A. Massive, Bold, Burly, Broody are some words that come to mind. Her skeleton, structural build, foot quality and angles are as elite and progressive as they come. The mother of U2 Malbec 104F, an elite Red Angus semen sire owned by Ovigenetics in Jalisco, Mexico, 465A has proven to be an elite donor cow within the Niobrara Red Angus program. With a few standouts retained in herd, and reports of exceptional calves from embryos marketed to fellow Red Angus breeders, this cow will move a program forward. It hurts to think about not seeing her every day at Niobrara, but we wanted to offer our very best in this first event held at the ranch in Niobrara, and 465A is just the cow to get people excited about the future of Red Angus cattle.

In short, John Wick may be the most influential Red Angus bull in my lifetime. His influence in this breed has been rare but ever-expanding. Why the use?

Because he injects unique, highly soughtafter phenotypical traits into his offspring,consistently, that you can’t find anywhere else in a Red Angus bull.

When sorting through heifer calves this summer, I wanted to offer the best heifers Niobrara could produce, from the heart of their herd. John Wick daughters needed to highlight this section. NIO Gloria 2032 is a royal pedigree, that’s phenotypically stunning. Out of a Signature x Six Mile Gloria 195B daughter, Six Mile Gloria 361T actually ends up on both sides of this heifer’s pedigree several generations back. I remember the days touring Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan and coming upon Gloria 746W, a favorite of many that toured the herd at SIXM. Fast forward almost a decade, we come to find the Gloria cow family’s influence among the most elite Red Angus seedstock in North America. Dark red, huge bodied, square, bold, and true, this heifer exhibits the Wick build we’ve all come to covet. She should prove to be a highlight halter heifer or future donor cow for any program pushing for progress in the Red Angus breed.

A favorite of many this summer, 2157 is about as right for the times as any heifer calf we could offer. Stemming from one of the most productive cows in the herd, 633C, there is defined consistency on both sides of her pedigree. Moderate, big-ribbed, opened-up and square, this heifer’s big boned, heavy structured build will catapult you towards the front of her contemporaries. Getting her photo a few weeks ago, she reminds me a lot of the High Selling John Wick daughter in our 2020 Red, Redefined Sale that sold to Kathy Lehman in Ohio for $40,500. Again, her kind is so hard to assemble, she would be a highlight heifer calf in anyone’s herd.

If you’ve not talked to me personally, I am extremely passionate about cattle that are consistent. With less risk associated in their progeny, they provide a faster return on investment and make flushing expenses seem like a confident business decision. NIO Boysin Berry 2004 is stacked on both sides with maternal giants that provide the peace of mind we all so desperately desire. H/H Adventure 0054 came out swinging in his first calf crop with high end offspring both at Niobrara Red Angus & Harmony Hill. Backed by the incredibly potent Rojas Moonbeam 7102, mother to Adventure, you’ll be acquiring a cow’s influence that is at the core of genetic decisions in Bozeman, Montana. Damar Boysin Berry C161 is a Mulberry 26P daughter that consistently produces one of the top calves in the Niobrara herd every year. Last year, her natural daughter by High Caliber sold for $32,000 to New Jersey, and those two daughters are incredibly similar. A head-spinning look from the side, 2004’s presence is undeniable. Bold, square, big ribbed, and cowy, we’re incredibly fond of her.

You couldn’t possibly get me more excited about a heifer calf with a big, big-time future… Period. This kind of mating right here is what had me excited about incorporating a different line of genetics, acquired from C-T Red Angus with C-T Reputation 0094. If you’ve not heard or noticed, reports on Reputation are quite exciting. A bull acquired with Overmiller Gelbvieh & Red Angus of Smith Center, KS, he was my favorite bull I laid eyes on during 2021 Bull Sale Season and he’s proving to be an incredible asset for each herd involved. 2019 is backed by a genetic-gem; a John Wick x Alana 13X first-calf-heifer with an immaculate bag. You couldn’t possibly acquire anything more currently relevant than NIO Alana 2019. With deep, dark red parents on both sides of her pedigree, she is a massive bodied, ultra-cowy looking heifer calf that screams maternal. Absolutely heart-stopping at the ground, these are the kind that elevate the Red Angus breed to another level. With 6 EPDs in the Top 10% of the breed, this heifer proves to be the combination we’ve had in mind all along.

Semen kept exclusively within the owner’s herds, and the only three units marketed bring $500 a unit, C-T Reputation 0094 is headed down the same prestigious path as Mr. Wick. Both Reputation daughters on offer are backed by first-calf

A true sale highlight is this Resource daughter from the incredibly proven Blackbird 107X donor. NIO Blackbird 2300 is my kind to a T. Long, attractive, sound and the makings of an incredible bag, I’d argue this heifer could have as much upside as any. It’s no secret, the MRLA Resource 137E daughter’s work. With several in herd in Bozeman, and watching the bull become a bag-improver, I’d take as many of them as I can. With multiple high-selling daughters in 2021, and more to come in 2022, 137E is as consistent a bull you can use, doing a lot of very positive things.

NIO Lakota 2115 supports once again the direction we’re headed towards combining the breed’s most elite phenotype and genotype cattle. A stunning, amazing-structured heifer calf that is built for the long haul, 2115 also offers a very progressive EPD profile that is the result of some of our most proven herd bulls. LASO Bucket List E8G sired our High Selling Bull in 2022, NIO American Freedom 1005, bringing $46,000 to Nordlund Stock Farms of Minnesota, and he continues to impress us with his progressive build and EPD profile. A bold, big ribbed, maternal shape to her rib that transitions into a big, square, level hip. Place all of that onto an immaculate structural build, and we’ve described one of the most high-level phenotype females in the entire offering. Due January 24th, 2023, to our Milk Creek Vigilante 1400 addition from Milk Creek Red Angus, we’re combining phenotype & genotype to the highest degree.

A true power cow in the making, you couldn’t possibly make one bolder, stouter, wider, and bigger ribbed. With an incredibly sweet and attractive head, she’s also got the makings of a beautiful bag underneath. Actually… wait. If you wouldn’t mind… don’t bid here. I’d like to bring her back to Montana myself.

When sorting through the U2 Ranch Dispersal offering, the U2 Mission 61W cows were among our favorites and were proving to be worth having. Having AI’d and flushed a few cows that way, he is proving to make a very worthwhile kind here at home as well. This 61W daughter was on the short list to sell in last year’s Red, Redefined Sale in Bozeman, Montana, but proved to not appreciate the altitude, so we sent her back to the replacement pen in Niobrara. One of the more phenotypically attractive heifers in the offering, she’s long bodied, beautiful fronted, deep sided, and very sound. If you’re in the business of raising some show heifers, I’d have this bred heifer on my short list. She’ll do it one day, probably sooner than later.

NIO Tarmily 1073 hit me as among the biggest ribbed, boldest bodied, moderate sized heifers in the offering. Another Foreigner 413B daughter, this time on an Indpendence x Tarmily 106A daughter, you can expect much the same in this female as the previous lot. Sound structured, easy fleshing, and bold, I’d expect this heifer to last a long time in production. We’ve since flushed the Damar Tarmily 016A cow to John Wick, and there are several very nice heifer calves that made the replacement pen this year of that mating.

We’ve been one of a few to dive into U2 Nova 627F, and we’d encourage anyone to take some cows that way. These next 3 daughters all sired by Nova bring a lot to the table. NIO Lakota 1096 stems from a beautiful Weber Reform daughter backed by the prominent Six Mile Lakoto 35W cow. That Reform daughter made this female a deep, dark red that is ripped up with shape and power. Ultra cowy, sound structured with the undeniably attractive Nova head, this heifer will make a stunning cow in production.

Another U2 Nova 627F daughter, this time from a very productive Damar Redeeming daughter from the legendary Damar herd.

The final U2 Nova 627F daughter on offer is out of one of the most proven cows on the ranch, 3519. One of the original cows Jeff purchased from 5L Red Angus in Sheridan, MT, 3519 has continually produced one of the best calves in the calf crop every year. NIO Boni 1132 is a super maternal, stout constructed heifer that’s beautiful through her front one third. She strikes me as a female that could remain in herd for a long time; just like her mother. Favorable to the $46,000 High Selling Bull from the 2022 Bull Sale, NIO American Freedom 1005, this combination of cow families and genetic profiles should result in a fast return on investment.

Another highlight in the 2022 Red, Redefined Production Sale is this Resource 137E daughter from the C-T Verdi 2011 cow. Verdi 2011 didn’t waste any time over the last 5 years creating a permanent place within the herd at Niobrara Red Angus. This bred by 137E maintains 2011’s stunning, feminine, maternal look with added power and a very long-term structural build. Much the same, I’ll reiterate, these bred heifers from some of the most consistent cows on the ranch are a true feature. Take advantage of cow families that were acquired for good reason; consistency is key in our operation.

Among the youngest heifers we kept to breed this year was this Powerhouse daughter by the D249 cow. A favorite of many when they walked through the replacement pen this spring, this heifer has a look that is undeniable. Stunning up front, so level and attractive in her lines, and very sound at the ground; again, if you’re in the business of marketing some show heifers, this could very well be a female you flush in the future. Damar Bonnie D249 is a stunning donor cow that was purchased by Sam & Lauren Hunt of Troy, Idaho last fall when we opened the doors up for a few progressive Red Angus breeders to assemble a group of bred cows and heifers to support their endeavors moving forward. I’d find this one on sale day.

NIO Leanna 1185 has brood cow written all over her. Big ribbed, long bodied, wedged right from front to back, and sound at the ground, this front-end Bonanza daughter brings to the table a lot to be appreciated. C-Bar Leanna 776E has been a productive Defender daughter for us, most notably producing NIO Legitimate 0083, purchased by The Nelson Ranch of Richland, MT in 2021 for $9,000. Favorable AI to Bieber Energize F121, her first natural calf could provide an incredibly fast return on investment.

What a way to finish up the bred heifer section, right? Rounding out the bred heifers on offer is this stunning SIXM Warcraft 254Z daughter, back by a daughter of the Blackbird 107X donor cow. With a killer look from the side, in a nice, moderate size, this Warcraft daughter demands your attention. Warcraft 254Z has stood the test of time, breeding cows in a commercial setting in Canada for almost 10 years. There’s ultimate longevity witnessed on both sides of this heifer’s pedigree. With the breed ablaze by Bieber CL Energize F121, her first calf should be sired by a bull whose influence is as in demand as any.

When I asked Jake to help identify some cows in the herd that would make this inaugural Red, Redefined Sale at the ranch a true highlight, we both thought about incorporating this direct daughter of WCR Miss Kuruba De 2085Z. As we look back on the cows that have had the biggest impact on Niobrara Red Angus to date, 2085Z may very well be that cow. This daughter of Legacy A-314 has proven to be a cow worth owning. In 2021, Fischer Red Angus of Harlowton, MT selected her John Wick son to incorporate into their program. And most recently, in 2022, her Big Timber son was selected by The Klocke Ranch of Randolph, KS. When I started working with Niobrara Red Angus back in 2017, it took me a few years to get a handle on exactly what cattle Jeff & Tami had already acquired. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY - The Inherent Risk of Owning Registered Cattle

Unfortunately, all of us in the Registered Seedstock business have similar experiences with respect to owning livestock. Regardless of how attentive, nurturing and caring we are, we can only control so much. In owning registered cattle, most of the time purchased at a premium, we all run the inherent risk of injury or death in those cattle. That said, there is no ‘industry norm’ or ‘industry expectation’ in terms of how this array of unfortunate instances are dealt with. Every business offers different terms for their product, and we feel the need to outline those instances and list what we feel as a breeder, we are actually responsible for.

We try unwaveringly to provide the best and most detailed animal husbandry we can for our cattle. However, once they leave our property, we are no longer in control of what may happen to them. Once they are released from our care, we can no longer control what they may be faced with or come into contact with. We are not in control of them and feel that is the responsibility of the new owner to see to their well-being.

Fertility is foremost the only thing a ‘breeder’ should guarantee their bull or female provides. We guarantee that they are sound and healthy breeders, that can do their part to reproduce to provide a timely return on investment. Please reference our Terms & Conditions in the catalog.

Purchasing Livestock Mortality Insurance is firmly advised.

The following are additional circumstances we cannot prevent.

SUDDEN DEATH

Bloat may be the most common, but there are also many other ways cattle may show no signs of pain or discomfort before ultimately leading to death. Internal abscesses, internal hemorrhages, intussusception, internal blockages, heart, or lung injuries, choking, etc. All these things and more, we cannot control, and is part of the inherent risk of owning livestock.

DEATH BY DISEASE (BACTERIAL OR VIRAL)

We vaccinate and treat our cattle for every known disease they may come into contact with, but we cannot guarantee they may pick something else up in their lifetime, in a different geography or location. We are not liable for our cattle contracting a new disease, out of our ownership or possession.

DEATH FROM ENVIRONMENT

Cattle getting stuck in between trees, high-centered on a hill or hole, stuck in a fence or gate, electrocuted by lighting or electricity, coming up lame with an injury sustained from other cattle, drowning, etc. All of these things no one can control. Cattle can get themselves into all kinds of situations. It is our responsibility as their caretaker to try our best to keep them out of harm’s way, yet there is only so much you can do.

DEATH FROM BREEDING, PREGNANCY OR PARTURITION

Another inherent risk of owning cattle is their process of reproduction and parturition (calving). Many things can go wrong in the process for every bull or female. We cannot guarantee a hands-free, live calf. Many, many, many things contribute to a calf’s presentation, delivery, shape, and weight.

HIGH-ALTITUDE DISEASE

Niobrara Red Angus is not headquartered at an altitude that would allow one to think they have no risk of High-Altitude Disease. At our elevation, it would never show itself, therefore, we don’t even have the correct environment in order to perform accurate PAP testing. We cannot guarantee our cattle will not show signs of “Brisket” or High-Altitude Disease.

The health of the herd is excellent. We guarantee that all sale cattle will ship to any state or Canadian province. All females are officially calfhood vaccinated. All cattle are on a complete pre-conditioning and herd health program.

TERMS

Niobrara Red Angus reserves the right to two future flushes on any females selling at our expense and the buyer’s convenience.

Terms of the sale are cash unless other arrangements have been made before the sale with Niobrara Red Angus. Every animal will be sold to the highest bidder with the auctioneer settling disputes.

Announcements from the auction block shall take precedence over the sale catalog and/or any additional printed information regarding animal(s) sold.

A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal. It is your responsibility to give Niobrara Red Angus the appropriate transfer information at the checkout counter, in order for the transfer to be executed.

All cattle are the buyer’s property as soon as sold and will be cared for, for a reasonable length of time at the buyer’s risk. Neither Niobrara Red Angus nor any person connected to this sale assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.

GUARANTEE

Every animal in this sale is free from disease or defect to the best of our knowledge or they will be identified.

All animals are guaranteed breeders, with the exception of:

i) Calves less than 12 months of age.

ii) Animals shown by purchaser after the sale that were:

a. transported and shown while trying to maintain a pregnancy, during heat or unnecessary stress.

b. only artificially inseminated, and never exposed to a bull with a recent BSE.

c. fed to an extreme level of obesity or kept too thin for reproductive health.

d. fed unnecessary supplements, or victim to illegal practices altering their conformation.

iii) Females that are to be used, or attempted to be used, in an embryo transfer program, after the date of sale.

iv) Animals who suffer injury and disease following the sale.

v) Gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Buyer.

‘Safe in Calf’ Females have been examined by a competent veterinarian and are so guaranteed to be in safe in calf. No further fertility guarantee post calving is available.

Cows with calves at side are presumed to be breeders with no further fertility guarantee.

If those animals that meet this guarantee fail to breed after a period of six months, it may be returned to the seller in good condition and in compliance with Nebraska Health Regulations. The seller reserves the right to try the said animal for six months and if it proves to be a non-breeder, either an animal of comparable rank will be substitute, or a credit will be given on a future sale on an animal for animal basis. Those credits are to be used within one calendar year from when the credit is offered. No cash refunds will be dispersed.

LIVESTOCK MORTALITY & THEFT INSURANCE

It’s nearly impossible to have livestock without some deadstock. Unfortunately, our businesses trade a live product that can expire at any given moment, from a never-ending list of causes. It is important that your worthy investment is protected with an Annual Full Mortality & Theft Coverage policy. James F. Bessler, LLC, of Fort Worth, TX is a trusted cattle industry partner that specializes in livestock mortality insurance. It is your duty as a purchaser of cattle in this sale to protect your investment from the wide array of unfortunate circumstances that come with the responsibility of owning livestock. We do not offer refunds if such unfortunate events occur. Either your policy does its job, or we will work with you to receive another animal of comparable value, so long as it still meets the criteria outlined in our Terms and Conditions. HALF INTEREST

On a few select lots we are offering half interest only. The buyer will receive all the show rights and will be responsible for all the show expenses related to such exhibitions. Whomever maintains possession of the animal after their show career, will receive the female’s natural calves in order to justify the female’s annual operating costs. Therefore, the other owner is not to be billed for half of the female’s operating costs. With respect to embryo production, the buyer and Niobrara Red Angus will rotate back and forth on who receives which flush/IVF opportunity; the first going to the buyer of said female. It is each party’s financial responsibility to pay for their flush entirely when it is their turn. All embryos from those flushes go to the owner flushing at that time, unless otherwise agreed upon before the flush/IVF occurs. DELIVERY

We will pay one half of the delivery cost to central points, anywhere in the continental US, on animals who sell for $4,000 or more. For animals under $4,000, delivery will be at cost. Please understand, if lining up the logistics is to be our responsibility, expecting us to deliver them to your doorstep is unreasonable.
