Welcome to the 9th annual Spring Select Simmental Bull and Female Sale. This edition is once again on the first Saturday in March, at VJV Dawson Creek. Phone order bidding and live internet bidding will be available this year if you cannot attend. We also have videos of the animals this year so please see our website www.fallentimberfarms.com for links to those. Needless to say, the last year has had some challenges in Agriculture that have literally changed the landscape, and adjustments across the board are being made daily to keep operations afloat. These hard times force some consideration and reflection in business strategies and ranch practices alike as efficiency improvements becomes the only way to shelter an already thin profit margin. In the cattle business, this translates to ruthless culling principles, strict pasture management, and disciplined forage production/purchase. The working cow becomes a pillar in this strategy as it all hinges on her production and the input costs associated with her raising a calf to get to market. Our own herd is based on these principles and we strive to produce efficient, trouble free seedstock, that will better your program. We believe deeply in quality walking sires and have made a habit of spending good money on outcross genetics to those already at work in the Peace Region. We breed in the North for the North, and work the genetics out on your behalf to ensure only the animals that can make it through the droughts, snow and cold are coming to market. The 2022 Sale offering of FTF bulls is likely the most even set we have raised. Drought conditions did no one any favors but these calves weighed up great and the mommas bred back above average, which is a demonstration of the working cow families. With a bumper crop of first calvers giving the right type of herd bull looking calves last fall, this bull pen is heavy with calving ease types. These calves are versatile and have growth built right in, so study each lot, as many of these bulls will work double duty on a heifer pen and out on range on the brood cows’ herd. Leading the catalogue off several lots are available from our new Black walking sire AIA “Northstar” 49G. He is an absolute tank, moving out like a jungle cat on great big black feet – I am excited to see his progeny go to work in the Peace. From heifer pen specialist Rendezvous 244F (Ron) a large offering of solid red/black and baldy bulls. These bulls are friendly, hairy and evenly muscled all with smooth shoulders and small heads. The second crop off Deeg 81F (McDavid) calves was heavy on replacement heifers (which we selfishly kept for ourselves) but the 2 bulls on offer are good ones with 833J being one to keep an eye on. A few outcross calving ease type bulls in red suits are available in the next set of calves in the book, off of a package of 1st calvers we purchased from Tymarc last year. Rounding out the offering we hit the staple bulls from Dare Devil, Red Whiskey, and Rockstar Capone. These calves need no introduction and are just plain good. On a sad note we lost Capone last year to a catastrophic injury, so this will be the last naturally sired offering from the old legend. Our animal handling philosophy remains unchanged for the 2021/2022 growing season; a no/low pressure work environment when handling cattle, with a one-way ticket to town for the bad actors. This season we transitioned to hand feeding the bulls a soy-based pellet formulated for optimal bull development, and this control allows us to dial in the percentage of daily intake. The balance of the program hinges on home grown grass hay and alfalfa silage. We continue to believe in growing our animals with longevity in mind, and want to show the growth potential in a specimen while maintaining health. The 9th sale has a strong offering of good made FTF influenced commercial replacement heifers from a very reputable breeder in the South Peace. Mike and Wynter Weiss will be coming to town with ~20 bred SimAngus females bred back to Angus heifer bulls. This program has invested heavily in FTF bulls over the years, so buy with confidence on these front pasture replacements. We pride ourselves on repeat business and welcome new buyers to visit the ranch, learn about our operation, and visit for a while. We are truly grateful for all buyers and bidders, new and repeat, along with those simply interested in our program. Respectfully,
Chet, Jamie, Taos, Rhett & Nash Jans FALLEN TIMBER FARMS

This is the first calf crop from our new walking sire “Northstar” as we call him. We were searching for an outcross black bull, full of meat, with explosive growth and excellent EPD’s, backed by a great cow family, and we were fortunate enough to purchase the high selling black bull from the Rendezvous herd in Manitoba in 2020. To say the least, his first calf crop has not disappointed. Hassler is a cookie cutter sort of bull compared to his sire. Thick, soggy made, and meat in all the right places. This rascal has a hair coat on him made in the north for the north, and coming from the old legend 238c cow here, he is backed by a true foundation female FTF 4A. The heaviest weaned calf in our pen, and the second heaviest yearling weight – he is consistently packing pounds. Star this guy.

A red edition Norstar calf, Haines is the brother to lot 1. Slightly more moderate in muscle expression, Haines is a balanced bull that is easy on the eyes and even easier to get along with as he is the first to the trough every day. If you are looking to add some maternal to your herd, I can’t say enough about these 238C progeny; this is a bloodline you can start a herd with.

Talking cow families is my go-to in these catalogues, as we look hard at females when buying cattle and herd sires for our own herd, and it sure is nice when you get an idea on the cows in the lot descriptions. Jorvik is from a gem of a female, the 424E girl that catches many eyes, going back again to 238C/4A. He is a specimen, balanced beautifully, and equipped with a tidy front third and small head. Take note of his EPD’s – he is standout.

I like this bull. He is wide topped, full of hip, has a great hair coat and is show ring fancy. The balance in carcass is evident, and moving out he is smooth as silk – he’ll cover some range. Jeter’s momma is a real brood cow – a red baldy Upstart female set up correct that milks hard, going back to the Tara cow that raised many good ones, and likely had the best feet I’ve seen on a cow.

Jokaste is another soggy sort of bull that is right full of middle. A red son from a red momma cow that is thick as a brick and broody – she is a hard-working girl that is built for the cold. 889J is a curious bull that tracks out nice and even, but doesn’t particularly care for the socializing at the feed trough or a bunch of grooming. Cowboy’s have a look at this guy as he should work really well on range and add some pounds to a calf crop.

Herd bull type right here. This black bull is a country mile long and powerful, coming from our McDavid son. I appreciate 833J’s fluidity in motion and really like how athletic he is on his feet. There is some real maternal in this bull as well, as his red damn 335C, goes back to the Red Destiny cow that has several females in our herd hard at work. Good honest working females that breed true are a key ingredient to consistency in calf crops, and it is bred right into Jackman’s pedigree.

Another jet-black McDavid son here back to a sweetheart red Anchor D female we picked up a couple years back. Jarvis is smooth made bull built right with a ton of spine., and very smooth. The McDavid sons in last year’s sale were very popular, and with his 2021 calf crop being predominantly females, we only have 2 sons on offer this year – don’t miss out.

The first “Ron” Son to kick off this section is a really good one! This baldy calf has all the boxes checked – top, middle, ample quarter, friendly, and a full chrome package. These Ron calves all have hair, are the “in your pocket” sort of bulls with low birthweights, and exhibit great daily gains. Hendrix has curve bender EPD’s with all traits above average, and comes from a fancy type of red baldy Capone female jam packed full of maternal strength – she loves her calves and milks hard. Not a lot of first calvers can wean them at over 800lbs on a drought year browsing on willows and bush grass.

Drop the tags on these Ron Progeny and you’d be hard pressed to tell them apart across the pen. Consistency in this crop is on display. Harley is a hairy made package of meat that is smooth and tidy headed. Starting out at only 82lbs, Harley grew and grew, with credit given to his beautiful black Capone momma absolutely stacked with foundation females in her pedigree, back to our gold standard AEDJ 12U female, who unfortunately went down the trail at 13 years old. This guy needs a hard-long look on sale day.

Where to start…I mentioned 12U a few lot’s up, and this is a strength in Hanson that needs some discussion. A great bull is from a great cow, and may likely be legend if there are stacked cows considered great all the way through the pedigree. Hanson has this going on. His damn 627 is our last 12U female and holds a special place in our herd. A flashy baldy cow herself, this translated through to Hanson. Amazing EPD’s, great growth, and smooth made – star this lot.

Another heifer bull candidate with a great baldy presentation. Cookie cutter type calves and hard to talk up as they are so similar in make. Holt has a great personality and is always at the trough for a visit. He doesn’t waste too much time on small talk though as his daily gains from weaning through to yearling are above average. Holt’s damn is sweety baldy Daredevil female with a nice middle and great udder.

A solid red hairy Ron son a frame score higher than most of his brothers, he comes by it honestly off of a big red first calver. These really broody females are an asset, especially when they can push a 100lb calf on their own, and get right up and start mothering. These Ron calves are some of the most vigorous I have seen, and when the cold sets in and the sun is down, it is a nice treat not having to worry about first calvers.

Coming from a black baldy Capone female backed by 129B back to Tara, there is a consistent story to be told. Ron went down half way through breeding season and never did recover so short of the few calves we had in late December 2021, this may be your last chance on a bona fide candidate for the heifer pen. The one and only “Spud” calf on offer this year, back to a very nicely put together Erixon cow from a long line of good uddered and footed females. Hallford is a balanced bull, has ample muscling and a smooth shoulder, with a bull presence about him he had right from birth.

Moving into these Daredevil calves I know I will be struggling on descriptions as they are certainly stamped a certain way. Over the years we have really grown to appreciate Daredevil progeny, and are extremely pleased with the replacement females – great udders, strong maternal, hardy and fertile successively. Jester is great example of the right traits at work, top, hair, length of spine, and growth in a smooth package. Going back to a moderate Red Warrior female getting some age on her and still never missing or having an issue, I feel this splashy fella may make some really good keeper heifers.

Marked just like Lot 21, Jetstream has a tick more performance in him, likely inspired by Upstart in the back ground on the 208B cow, throwing an extra rib on the spine. I appreciate this bull as he has some performance showcased on the hoof and in his EPD, all while carrying a smooth made carcass and moving out with an athletic gait.

Performance bull long as a well rope from a tank of a cow, pretty well sums up Juggernaught. This guy has been a standout since birth and was easy to find in the bush with his great pigmentation. Balancing explosive growth with functional travel built in for years of breeding is no simple task, so when a bull comes around that checks these boxes and comes into the world at 90lbs, spend some time considering this bull as your next main walking sire.

Solid red bull up for discussion here. Back to the great 1A female off of 12U, real foundation female bloodlines are purposefully bred into Joystick. The balanced EPD spread seem evident in this guy as he is super agreeable to most through the pen. 886J is a good honest made red bull.

Holy smokes, Whiskey did it again, sale feature for sure. If you are in the market for a baldy bull that is as good on the hoof as he is on paper (he is above average in every department) do not miss your chance on this guy. Jameson is Jamie’s pen pick. He is moderate, smooth made with a heifer bull type head. He is growthy, athletic, and is saddle horse chill…super friendly. His Capone damn is another never miss female that is royally bred with the old 12U cow everpresent in the background. Star your books for this guy.

These Whiskey calves are the right type. They come easy at birth, bounce right up and gain evenly past yearling age. Jägermeister is a hairy bull with top to spare and a barrel of significance. He has the soggy spring of rib built into him from both his sire and the damn. She is a big middled momma cow.

A black edition Whiskey son off of a black Arizona female, 852J should have some friends on sale day. He is moderately framed and muscled right up, traveling out on a nice square foot. His damn is a maternal momma cow that never quits, and is a good one to have on pastures with predation issues as she is keen to watch out for other calves.

The last naturally sired Capone calf crop on offer may be the most consistent. Cowboys - Take a look at this guy – 834J is set up to cover cows. Balanced EPD’s, a long stride and a big foot, with a moderate birthweight and a snippet of chrome to boot. The dam is a direct descendent of 42R back to ROO 1N, and these cows were money makers – no nonsense females – not going to get a ribbon at the fair, but they will land you the biggest cheque in the fall when their calves cross the scale.

Jet is a fancy rascal that should catch your eye. He is a smooth mover and is athletic as a northern summer day is long. Back to a sweetheart red baldy female with a big middle, there is some hardiness built in from his dam. Jet isn’t up for a tail scratch at the trough but doesn’t move off, just a hair herd bound.

Possibly the sleeper of the sale right here folks. 858J is a soggy long made bull that carries his flesh deep into the flank and hangs the hams deep in the quarter. With excellent rate of gain, his efficiency is exemplified and should breed true as his dam sure does raise them up, with an abundance of milk, and great condition year-round.

This black Capone son is fancy, correct and thick. The hair on these calves has always impressed me. Justice is back to a monstrously middled perfect uddered red female that can raise them up right. Taos’s bull calf off of a foundation Arizona female. One of the youngest bulls we have offered for sale – but a specimen that certainly deserves a long hard look. With a fantastic EPD spread and pedigree ripe with foundation females, along with a near perfect baldy pattern – I think Jelly Bean will have some pretty awesome calves. As aforementioned, Capone is long down the trail and this may be your last chance at a typically made Capone son – don’t miss out on a breeding legend.
