WELCOME Welcome to the 6th annual Spring Select Simmental Bull and Female Sale. This edition is once again on the first Saturday in March, and is sure to be a great event. For 2019 all lots on offer are right from our own Ranch. There are some exciting lots on offer this year, and I humbly present the catalogue for your appraisal. The Registered Simmental department has an offering of yearling bulls and open registered females from some new blood lines, and those in short supply in the Peace. Phil and Barb Pybus are joining the sale again with a great group of commercial Simmental cross opens that would be a welcome addition to anyone’s herd. We are also very proud to host the Groundbirch 4H Multiclub Helping Hands Fundraiser again this year, and urge you to come out and support the community’s Youth (whether you are in the market for cattle or not). I touch on it each year but the success of the sale, and our own Registered herd, is due to the hard-working Cattlemen and Cattlewomen that support our program, year after year. Jamie and I are genuinely grateful for this support and take that seriously as we search for elite herd sires each year to continue bringing new blood to the Peace Region. We believe in walking sires, and always have, and have invested serious dollars in some new bloodlines. Our calf crop this year is tailored to industry demand for moderate carcass size, in calving ease packages with impressive growth potential. You will notice a broad range of cattle in this set, but more calving ease prospects on offer than years past. Our best advertising and testament to our program is our repeat volume client base, and I encourage perspective clients to purchase with confidence. We have seen a lot of change in our own Bull Battery in the last year with a few stretches of bad luck. Our Elite Red Rocket Son passed last winter pre-breeding and as such the crop on offer in this catalogue is the last, as no semen was collected. Our heifer bull specialist “Mountain” also went to town due to a hip injury on winter pasture. Rock solid Arizona ran his course with many replacement females at work in our herd, but does have a small group on the ground this January 2019. With changes afoot last year, we relied heavily on Capone and he again did not disappoint. The dollars spent for his service is an investment and we are seeing returns in progeny daily. Of particular note, Lot 1 and 2 are standouts, and may be some of the best calves we have raised. We also purchased a Red Whiskey Son directly from MRL in 2017 after careful consultation with Lee McMillan, and what a job he did in his first year of service. We also were fortunate enough to breed a former home-grown bull FTF Backwoods 127B, and his offering is very consistent. Looking forward to the future, a new calf crop from a Pretty Reckless son, MRL Daredevil 243D just hit the ground and I already look forward to the sale next year to talk them up. With bull season just around the corner we are ever searching for the next sire to grace FTF and provide quality feedstock to our valued customers. Our mission has and will continue to be to produce seedstock for use in real world conditions, specifically designed for cattle herds operating in the North Country. We maintain a no/low pressure work environment when handling cattle, and believe in temperament as strict criteria for animal retention. Our bull development program is based on alfalfa silage and a locally grown oat based mixed ration which we modify depending on weather, and growth patterns in the pen. We pay special attention to each group of calves to ensure they are developed with longevity in mind, but fed to exemplify their growth potential. Our yearling bulls are made to go to work. In closing, we look forward to meeting you on or before sale day, and working together to supply tailor made genetics for your operation. Should you ever have questions or concerns regarding your purchase or require assistance during breeding, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Polled Purebred. Evolution is a Bull that I have been waiting for since we started our Purebred Herd. He is an absolute stud, and could be the best bull we have ever raised. Length of spine, spring of rib, depth of muscle to the flank and hawk, in a big square hip, tidy front third, and clean head, with an easy fleshing finish makes me more than excited about this guy. Walking out on big square feet that track nearly perfect, is surely icing on the cake. This old Janzen Dam is a foundation female here. At 12yo, she never misses. Perfect feet and an udder that is always full. I had a bit of a self-inflicted grass issue in my bull pasture this summer and she made the difference on this calf. I sure wish his picture were better, because in the flesh he is something else.

Polled Purebred. Big time sale feature for sure. The Picture doesn’t do him justice. We have never raised a calf with so much performance jammed into an easy fleshing soggy made bull. He has a puppy dog attitude and has been commented on as “4H steer quiet” all season. The quarter and hip on this bull is really impressive, and his Top is so wide and flat you could set dinner for the whole family on him. He has carried himself with that herd sire look since a calf. It isn’t too often you see a black purebred dressed up in fleck clothes, but the half fleck cow apparently threw a bit of chrome at Daybreaker. As you can see, she is a solid red Revolution cow with a tiny snippet of white on her face, tidy udder and perfectly set in the feet department.

Tidy, moderate, but balanced with growth front to back, top to bottom. Polled Purebred. Here is another Red Rocket Son that looks like the rest. It sure is hard writing descriptions on these guys (and last year as well) as they are all so similar. If they lost their tags, I would have to work at figuring out who is who. I am a believer in uniformity and consistency and would hope that a group sired by 506E would do the same. As for the dam – she is my oldest cow at 15 years old – a true warrior that never misses. A long long time ago when she was a first calf heifer, and Jamie and I weren’t in purebreds, we actually used one of her sons in our own commercial herd and were beyond happy with the fall run, and the keeper pen. She is a real momma cow.

Polled Purebred. Twin. 500E is a typical Red Rocket Son, with loads of spine and spring of rib. He has a nice tidy front third which is common in this group. This bull has an impressive pedigree dating back to Upstart and Revolution on the bottom side, and Agribition Champion Rocket on the top, leading me to believe that he will throw some nice replacement females. 500E’s dam who did the raising on this guy has a picture-perfect udder and feet, and most definitely is considered a front pasture cow on our ranch. As mentioned in the welcome, our Red Rocket son passed last winter so this is the final calf crop from this stellar herd sire.

His Upstart dam is in a cow family with several sisters at work in our herd. Proper udders are a hallmark for them. In best efforts to be transparent, I must say that 540 developed a small abscess on his cheek on pasture this summer that was lanced, but there is a small scar and a bit of scar tissue. This is on the opposing profile to the picture. He is sound and growthy and guaranteed.

Polled Purebred. This Arizona son is fancy made with a real splash of chrome. He has been a standout since birth and is very correct. Balanced muscling with a long smooth frame and flat top. He is from a great baldy Upstart female back to our cornerstone female SCSF 21U, which has raised sale toppers year after year.

Polled Purebred. 543F is another pen favorite and is definitely one of Arizona’s best Sons. Deep, wide, with lots of length and a nice smooth shoulder, are all favourable attributes I like about this guy. Cow Family wise, 543’s dam is a staple Upstart daughter, that produces a sale bull or a keeper heifer every year.

Polled Purebred. If you are looking for a baldy that is near symmetrical in pattern, this is your guy. He is full of hair, nice and square hipped with good top, in a very moderate frame. His dam has a female at work in our herd with a similar baldy pattern, that seem to get passed on. The dam has square feet and a tidy udder.

Polled Purebred. The first Backwoods son on offer is a blaze edition that has a small head, clean front and a long spine. These Backwoods’ calves move out amazingly and can cover ground on nice square feet. The momma cow is a super correct Upstart female, in blaze herself, with moderate frame, square udder and standard square steep Upstart feet.

The cross between heifer bull progeny (Arizona females x Mountain Sire) worked out to produce a very similar style of animal in both the heifer pen and the bull pen.

Polled Purebred. This moderate bull is stout and thick like other Mountain sons from years past, but in a black paint job this time. EPD wise – they don’t get much better in the BW and CE department and with a few blood lines to previous walking heifer bulls on our ranch (Mountain and Arizona) he has some heifer bull potential in the right pen. As I mentioned Mountain went down on a hip injury right before breeding and as such, this is his last crop, so don’t miss out on this final group of bulls.

Polled Purebred. The only Whiskey female on offer from our herd this year. She is one of those females that I really want to keep as the mix on the dam side is really great. I appreciate these Whiskey calves for their hip and middle and 528F is no exception. The dam, a PAW female, is very feminine and has half sisters at work in our herd.
Polled Purebred. What a beauty of an Arizona heifer in a nice black outfit. This girl is sure to be a leading lady as she goes back to a 33U daughter (208B) that is correct in udder, feet, and shape. She has lots of barrel and tons nice feminine angularity. As mentioned in the pre-amble, Arizona went to town this year due to age, and although he is gone, his legacy lives on in his progeny and there is a pile on the farm to ensure nice tidy udders and steep black feet for years to come.

She is a black Mountain calf as a result of crossing an Arizona female, which as described in the bull section of this catalogue, turned out progeny that are really solid. 522F’s dam is near perfect conformationally speaking and goes back to, (in my opinion) our best cow TYS 812U. 522F is one to watch.
