Welcome to the 18th edition of the North of the 49th Bull Sale. Thank you to our loyal customers that have helped build this program. In agriculture we are fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most down to earth people. It’s been a true honour to do business with you over the years. I think we can all agree, 2020 was a year we just want to put in our rear view mirror. Again, we are thankful we are involved in agriculture and were still able to move forward in our day to day lives and kept value in our products we produce. Looking forward to 2021 has a fair bit of optimism already buzzing in the world of Agriculture we live in. Commodities have seen an upward trend like no other and the cattle side has to be optimistic. Our product is of the highest quality and is still in high demand, regardless of what is going on in the world today. The other side is inventory; we haven’t seen these few numbers of cattle in years. The time to use Charolais genetics is right now. The feedlots have spoken and the Charolais advantage is in full force. Charolais bulls have evolved; the calving ease is there, we have seen it being used on crossbred heifers successfully. The performance and carcass advantage is our bread and butter. When used with British type females, these buckskin calves will increase your bottom line in the cow/calf operation. These same principles we speak of, is what makes up our program. We have a relentless desire to add value to the commercial operation. These bulls are raised in a ranch atmosphere with a ranch philosophy and we don’t settle for just a bull. We seek the strongest genetics we can get that will add value and carcass merit. The herd sires we use are a true reflection of our program. We do start from the ground up when finding herd bulls. The foot structure that our program has right now is as strong as we have ever seen it. Our 2021 bull pen is consistent from lots 1 to 100. These bulls will add value and be low maintenance herd bulls. The new sire groups in the sale have worked very well and will be true long term herd bulls in our program. I was asked in the fall what our 2021 bull pen looked like this year and my reply was as simple as this, “Certain years the right cows have bull calves.” Take this as an invitation to come see our line up of bulls and what our program has to offer. We feed for

athleticism&longevity

The entire pen of bulls has been developed on a high roughage, total mixed ration from fall weaning to spring delivery. The ration has been formulated to maximize nutrition. We like the bulls to gain 3-3.5 lbs/day, carrying moderate flesh, not excessive body condition. We feel it is difficult to properly appraise these bulls when they carry excessive condition. Longevity and athleticism is of highest importance - structurally sound feet and legs are a must and we will not put any trait ahead of it. We are confident in the dam’s structure and the herd bull they are sired by or these bulls aren’t in the sale. We understand that we are a performance driven breed and we strive to utilize genetics that add pounds to your calf crop without sacrificing calving ease. It is important the genetics we select also leave you with desirable replacement females.

How to Find Us

Tank was a bull we found on a long bull tour with Mr. Hunter in the foothills of the Montana Rockies at DeBruycker Charolais. We walked through the ten pens of about 600+ bulls, not very many places you will see that many bulls in one stop. The lot 226 bull was the absolute stud of those pens and reminded me as much of the Downtown bull as anything. The Tank bull was as soggy as you will find and possessed a ton of swagger with a herd bull head and look to him. He was early maturing with outstanding growth numbers. The calving ease in this bull is tough to beat - he works on heifers consistently and will shorten gestation by a week on cows and heifers. I find it very fitting that the Tank bull was sold to one of the largest operations in the states. With his first calf crop leading off our sire groups in 2021, we are very confident in the direction this bull is taking our program. You will appreciate the growth in these bulls, their soundness, and the moderate birth weights they have. We calved roughly 30 heifers to Tank this spring and will keep using him in the AI program on heifers.

Honky Tonk is one impressive individual and we believe he has a lot to offer. This bull has been noticed from an early age on and for many reasons. A lead off bull of this type out of a new pedigree is very intriguing. This bull represents what our program is all about and one of the ideal types in our eyes to replicate. Honky Tonk is absolutely one of the most massive bulls we have raised. When you put him into motion he has that swagger and will not miss his stride. You get behind this bull he is as stout as you will find, with that early maturity that the Tank calves possess. When you talk about cow power I do believe this female comes to the forefront of our program. She already produced a lead off Downhome female that sold to Johnson Charolais in our Volume III female sale. We believe in her enough that she was in our flush program this past spring. The Fifty Shades females are proving some huge value with Honky Tonk’s 3/4 sister, Lemon Drop 5H, being a highlight in the Superstar Female sale selling to Harvie Ranching. If performance is on your radar, I don’t know if we have raised a bigger converter than this bull. Conversion is huge and I believe it will be one of the biggest pushes in the industry for us to stay sustainable. The weaning weight and ADG of this fella is off the charts. He does this with no creep, and he is built on a moderate frame. We are going to use Honky Tonk in our AI program for his unique ability to convert and his fault free structure. Lot 3 Haywire is quite a hunk of bull; big ribbed, easy keeping and loaded up with calving ease. We flush cows around here for females, his dam is the Suzanne female that is highly maternal and will improve udder quality. The Tank bulls will have some really high value with their structure, calving ease and growth curve. We are always searching for that well rounded bull in a breeding program and the Tank calves are adding another piece to that puzzle of calving ease and heavier weaning weights.

Hurley has been easy to find from day one. I admire the proud look of this bull. This bull has many herd bull qualities; he is soft made, deep bodied and early maturing. The calving ease in the Tank bulls is impressive and this bull is no different at only 88 lbs on a mature cow and 11 days early on gestation. His calves will have vigour and still have a frame to grow into. Hurley moves out really well with solid hoof structure and performance to boot.

Halifax is a bull we think quite highly of for many reasons. This might just be the calving ease bull we will AI our heifers to for the next few years. The type and kind he represents is what our program breeds for. This bull is so correct out of the front shoulder, you admire his extension and get lost in the depth of body from front to back. He is tight sheathed with plenty of scrotal. When you combine outcross pedigree on the Wynnemaker female we feel it can be a long term breeding tool. He will consistently shorten gestation, calving ease on top and bottom of his pedigree. One of the great features of Tank is his superior hoof structure; these bulls are square to the ground on all four corners.

Hang on is precisely what the Tank calves can do, hitting the ground at 68 lbs with an adjusted weaning weight of 785. The growth spread on these calves is tremendous. Here is a bull you can use on heifers with one full sibling in the sale to this mating. Calving ease on both sides of the pedigree with a ton of maternal upside. Here is a nice Tank son that shouldn’t get overlooked. This bull is smooth from front to back. He will calve easy and have plenty of growth to them. His maternal brother is working at the Daines Oneil operation in Innisfail. This Tank son has an interesting story as we lost his dam in late June and he carried himself until weaning in September. I am pretty certain had he been on his cow until September he would push the weaning weight into the mid 800lbs.

This bull is a soft made and long sided type bull with a clean shoulder. He is a performance bull carrying a little birth weight. His dam is one of the stoutest cows in the yard with an ideal udder type. She does carry some birth weight in her pedigree though, but year after year she will calve out on her own. With the mating to Tank, you can rest assure this herdbull will calve on your cows and add some extra grow into your calf crop.

Carbon Copy is a new sire group this year and is also our largest sire group on offer this spring. He is a calving ease bull that works well on heifers and yet maintains the stoutness and growth the Charolais breed is noted for. This sire is as easy keeping as you will find with a great disposition. Sometimes you buy into a bull and you hang his picture up in the sale barn and it will hang there for 20 years. This is that bull. I don’t think you can paint them any better than his type, and the way he passes these traits on is pretty impressive. This sire will produce females and his pedigree is loaded with two of the strongest females in the business. Carbon Copy has a show record that not many bulls will replicate. He won Denver and Louisville as a 2 year old after naturally breeding roughly 100 head at our ranch and the Doll Ranch in South Dakota. ‘Building Legends’ is our motto here and I think we have found a true Legend in the Carbon Copy herd sire.

Carburetor is quite the way to start the Carbon Copy sire group. This bull is a standout in many ways. The hip structure is spot on, he is square in that hook to pin and the power he possesses is impressive. His Cactus Cut dam out did herself the first crack and has a full sib on the ground again this year. She is a well put together female with a real sound udder type. Balance in these Carbon Copy sons is impressive and the way he tightened up sheath on the first cross is just what we were looking for.

Lot 14 Copy Cat is massive in his design, full of red meat in that loin and carries it right into his lower third. This easy keeping smooth shouldered bull is real easy to notice. The capacity, eye appeal, and foot structure on this bull is long term.

Carbon Cut is a real nice breeding tool, this bull is stout and put together so well. The DCR Commissioner daughters are going to have some real long term value and the cross with Carbon Copy works really well. This moderate bull is so full in that hip and over the top line. He ties into that front end very well and has a desirable skull structure to him. If you like cattle that are sound, attractive made, with some real calving ease in their pedigree have a hard look at this one.

Hometown is a bull that is going to leave an impact at our ranch. The Carbon Copy sons are impressive and this is our leadoff son out of the Wynnemaker female. When I saw Carbon Copy at Doll Charolais as a yearling, I think this bull is as close to a replica as I have seen. The front end on this bull is absolutely insane yet he is bold enough from front to back. Hometown is so strong in his type, we feel he can compliment many females with his clean lines and sound structure. Nothing gets us hyped around here more than cattle that are functional and have that balance from front to back. The Carbon Copy bull will cut a large swath around our ranch and we feel the Hometown bull has the foundation to do just that.

A bit of a story behind this bull. His dam was purchased out of our Volume III female sale by our friend, Ross Bobier. He purchased three females that day as an investment and left them at the ranch. Ross passed away unexpectedly this past summer. He was a close friend to our family and his company will be forever missed. We will always remember his infectious grin and the excitement he brought just coming out to the ranch, ready to dig in to whatever job we had for him before bull and female sales. This bull has done very well and is soggy made with plenty of barrel and nice performance.

High Road is one of the real treasures of the bull pen. This herdbull is as complete as anything we have raised, a bull that is not extreme in any way but ties it all together really well. A bull that commands attention with his depth of body, square design, sound structure, with a gentle disposition. His dam needs no introduction into the charolais industry, she is a Firewater x 0641 who is superior in so many ways: udder quality, sound structure, and a chiselled front end. Compared to last year, there are not many Epic sons in this year’s sale. The Epic group led off our 2020 sale with high selling Guinness 787G to CSS Charolais. Sometimes, we will use a bull one year and step back, watch him mature and make sure he is taking us in the right direction. This Blackjack son is a really attractive made herdbull. This mating has being highly productive at Elder Charolais, and the 70X female has been one of the most productive donors in the breed in the last 5 years. Headspin is a really nice balance from front to back, he is sound with excellent hip structure and length of body. Length of body = pay weight without sacrificing calving ease! Homestead is a bull out of our Suzanne female whom we temporarily took out of production in 2018 to flush her. This is her first calf back into production, the higher birth weight is a direct result of this. When you flush a cow for a whole year they put on a fair bit of excess weight resulting in a larger calf the following year. The Suzanne female raised the Diplomat bull in 2017 that led off our sale and a high selling female in our 2017 female sale. TERMS AND CONDITIONS TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. THe settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made. BIDDING: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale. DISPUTES: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the lat bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final.
