Romie and Esther Tager are proud to support the work of Jami

What is Jami? Jami exists to enrich and save lives impacted by mental illness in the Jewish community. Our work is structured in three core areas:

We advise and advocate Guiding people through the challenging journey of navigating mental health services and providing emotional support and expert advice.

We provide treatment and support Providing professional, person-centred and peer support services for young people and adults with mental illness, as well as their families and carers.

We educate and campaign Providing education and training, developing collaborative partnerships, reducing stigma and building mutually supportive relationships across the wider community.

Our current services In 2021, Jami staff delivered 34,250 separate service interactions.

Volunteering

Jami’s Head Room Café in Golders Green brings awareness, education and access to mental health support to the high street. Jami’s hub services are a lifeline to those within the community affected by mental illness. Offering a monthly programme of activities and group support.

Physical Health

Promotion of the link between physical health and wellbeing and running exercise classes and walking groups.

Carer and Family Support

Jami offers a comprehensive programme of support to carers, whether it be for one-off advice or ongoing assistance.

Vocational Support

Vocational rehabilitation is an integral part of Jami’s recovery strategy; offering people a well-structured and supportive path into voluntary work, education/training and paid employment.

Education Outreach

Jami’s Education Team provides learning and engagement for adults and young people across the Jewish community, including schools, synagogues and organisations. In 2021 181 people people became Mental Health First Aid accredited.

Suicide prevention

ERIC – the Emergency Response Initiative Consortium - a group of charities led by Jami, have together created gold standard guidance for schools and deliver immediate face to face or online support within schools in the event of a suicide.

Initiatives such as Mental Health Awareness Shabbat have expanded to become an annual feature in the communal calendar. Our volunteer workforce is integrated into our service provision, including the Hospital Visiting team which provides an important link to life outside of the hospital as well as to the Jewish community. In 2019/20 the Jami Hospital Visiting Team made 814 visits to Jewish people in mental health units across London.

Compeer

In lockdown, Jami’s Befriending Programme was enhanced using the Compeer model, an international approach that matches screened and trained volunteers and people with mental illness.

Jami Qwell

An online mental health platform providing adults and students across the UK access to free, safe, online mental health counselling and support through a bespoke branded portal on Jami’s website.

Shout

Teaming up with Shout, a 24/7 UK text messaging service, for times when people feel they need immediate support.

We employ specialist mental health professionals to deliver our current services, predominantly Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and Peer Support Workers.

Impact of Covid and Jami’s response The impact on mental health has been one of the most significant outcomes of the Covid crisis. Anxiety, loneliness and isolation, and for some, the loss of loved ones, have led to significant increases in requests for Jami’s help since the pandemic began.

Jami responded to the increased need for services with a

55% increase in the hours of support provided

x2

Requests from young adults for our specialist service doubled

x3

Demand for help from our Carer & Family Support Service tripled

As well as the additional challenges created by the pandemic, an extensive consultation we conducted showed us that the Jewish community and wider society cannot easily access timely, evidence-based treatment for mental illness when they need it. Despite progress, the community continues to lack sufficient understanding of mental illness and distress and demands the ability to build resilience within safe and inclusive environments.

Launch a new service for young people of secondary school age

Open more Head Room cafés to support easily accessible mental health care in welcoming environments

Jami must extend existing services and introduce new ones to meet the mental health needs of the Jewish community.

Increase campaigning, education, and suicide prevention

Make it easier and quicker for people to access help and advice through a 24/7 helpline

Enable access to counselling and one to one psychological therapies

*To ensure the best use of community resources, on 1st April 2013, Jami formed an Association Agreement with Jewish Care. By way of this agreement, Jami became the provider of non-residential mental health care within the Jewish community and Jewish Care continued to use their expertise to provide residential care. Jami is a separate registered charity with a large professional team and are grateful to receive a grant from Jewish Care towards delivery of its services.
