Romie and Esther Tager are proud to support the work of Jami
one in four
The number of people each year who will experience a mental health problem of some kind.
And the Jewish community is no different. The prevalence of mental health problems among both adults and young people is increasing year on year, diminishing the quality of life for many and too often risking lives.
When Paola left hospital, having had what she describes as “essentially a nervous breakdown”, she was referred to Jami and given a support worker. Paola also joined Jami’s online mental health sessions and started going to our hub in Finchley, where she took part in activities and groups to support her mental health. More recently, she’s benefitted from Jami’s vocational support and hopes to gain full-time employment soon. But for now, Paola is happy volunteering for Jami as it’s enabling her to use her skills and experience and give something back. “Because of Jami, my week is filled with positive things,” she says.
Without the support of Jami, my life would be empty.
what we do
Jami enriches and saves lives impacted by mental illness and distress in the Jewish community.
Whether people need a reassuring conversation, expert advice on navigating mental health services, recovery-focused services, an advocate by their side, someone to speak to with lived experience, or long-term professional support, Jami ensures that people living with mental health problems, and their families, get the support they need, when they need it.
A year after their first child was born, Adam’s wife, Amy, had a mental health crisis. In desperation, the couple turned to Jami for help. Amy was given immediate support but what surprised Adam was that, as Amy’s carer, he was offered support too. Like Amy, Adam received one-to-one sessions with a Jami support worker. He then joined one of Jami’s carers’ groups. He says: “It’s been really cathartic. It’s a chance to listen to and support each other.” Adam further adds: “We both have people that we can speak to now – and this is so important. I don’t know how I or my family would have survived without Jami.”
When my wife and I were in crisis, community support was important. I don’t know how we would have coped without Jami.

Jami’s support has been fantastic. I didn’t realise how much I needed it and how much my child needed it.

*To ensure the best use of community resources, on 1st April 2013, Jami formed an Association Agreement with Jewish Care. By way of this agreement, Jami became the provider of non-residential mental health care within the Jewish community and Jewish Care continued to use their expertise to provide residential care. Jami is a separate registered charity with a large professional team and are grateful to receive a grant from Jewish Care towards delivery of its services.
Why we need your support
Over the last three years, referrals into our Young Adult service have doubled, and tripled into our Carer and Family Support service.
As statutory services buckle under the weight of demand, increasing numbers of people in our community are turning to Jami for help, making our lifesaving mental health services more needed than ever before.
We don’t, however, receive any government support to deliver them. Instead, we rely on the generosity of the community to
fund our services, which cost £5 million each year.
To keep our young people and adults safe and mentally healthy, we need the community to invest in mental health support on an entirely new scale. We know we have the ability and expertise to do this, but we can only succeed if the community plays its part too.
