A MESSAGE FROM
Our Chairman Dear Friends, In my first year as Chair of Jami, I have witnessed first-hand the commitment, enthusiasm, creativity and resilience of the whole Jami team. Despite continuing to be surrounded by uncertainty, thanks to our professional staff, volunteers and supporters, I have every confidence that Jami and those benefiting from our services will continue to thrive. Together we are changing lives, but we are also investing in a community which accepts, acknowledges and understands mental illness. A community which is resilient and has the capacity and capability to be healthy. A community in which symptoms of mental illness are as recognisable as a heart attack and trigger an equally apropriate response. A community in which Parity of Esteem is a reality and an environment which helps, not hinders, mental health. This should be all of our Youtopia. These past months have given many people a flavour of the isolation experienced for far too long by some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Let us hope that once lockdown and social restrictions are finally behind us, we can rise from isolation together. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2021,
Adam Dawson Chairman

A MESSAGE FROM
Our Chief Executive Dear Friends, The past ten months have probably been the toughest of my professional career, but thanks to the amazing efforts of Jami staff and volunteers, I have also experienced some of my proudest moments. Ever the optimist, I focus on some of the positive outcomes of the pandemic. Society is increasingly acknowledging the importance of mental health. Conversations about mental health are commonplace in every walk of life and in many respects, mental health is the parallel issue alongside the virus itself. Unfortunately, the demands on our services have increased significantly, but with improved awareness and education, our Community moves closer towards our vision of a transformed, more supportive, mental health landscape. This is Jami’s Youtopia. Post Covid, Jami services will be a blend of virtual and physical, taking the best of both to provide more effective services, increased capacity and greater reach. This is possible only thanks to your support. With very best wishes,
Laurie Rackind Chief Executive Officer

Jami’s Covid-19 Response During this unprecedented time Jami has continued to support the mental health of the wider Jewish Community, as well as our existing service users, many of whom have experienced a decline in their mental health as a result of the pandemic. When lockdown first began in March last year, our priority was to ensure that our most vulnerable existing service users were not alone. For some people, attending a Jami hub had been their only opportunity for a hot meal or social interaction, so ensuring both these needs continued to be met was vital. Providing IT equipment and technical support allowed people to access our virtual groups and keep in touch with loved ones and Jami service support, whilst maintaining social distancing.
2000+ meals delivered
With the closure of Jami’s Head Room Café and our four Community Hubs, we have adapted our services. This has been achieved through: • Meal provision and doorstep chats. • Telephone support and 1:1 video conferencing. • Additional telephone/online support to service users engaged with our new Young Adult Service and Vocational Support Service. • Launching and facilitating Community Hub Online and Head Room Online. • Free online programmes reflecting those held in person at our Hubs and Head Room Café. • Online carers support, peer-led and facilitated groups, including the newly created Young Family Carers Group. • Addanon Carers Support Group also moved online, for those caring for someone with addiction problems. • Adapting our educational programmes included delivering webinars focussing on the impact on mental health in the workplace and on the importance of looking after our mental health during the pandemic. • Relaunching our Befriending provision through introduction of the Compeer programme from the US. These vital friendships provide a vital link for service users to engage with the wider community.

It’s so comforting to know that I can tell my own mental health story without ever being judged. Jami have been wonderfully supportive and understanding and I can never begin to thank all of you for everything you’ve done to guide, encourage and help me through. Everybody has been absolutely brilliant.

Wider Community Support
100%
of Jami’s new referrals are Covid related There has been a 110% increase in new referrals of people whose mental health has deteriorated as a direct result of the pandemic. This is in addition to the growth in support needed from existing service users at this time. Looking to the future, we are expanding our provision further to support the needs of longer-term mental health services post-lockdown. Jami has been working closely with Kooth Plc, the UK’s leading online mental health platform, to provide Jewish students and adults across the UK access to free, safe, online mental health counselling and support. Jami Kooth launched in April and Jami Qwell in August and can be accessed through bespoke branded portals on Jami’s web page. We have also teamed up with ‘Shout’, the 24/7 UK text messaging service offering immediate crisis support. If a user texts Jami to 85258 it highlights to Shout they are linked to Jami and the appropriate connections can be made.
Future proofing It is currently unclear how long the latest lockdown is to last, but it’s likely that some form of social distancing will remain for a while. Jami is expecting and planning for a growing demand for our services over the coming year.
500
hours of support on Qwell
(AUGUST TO SEPTEMBER)
2568 hours of telephone support
The continued development of online individual and group support will assist our ability to meet this increased demand. However, given the overwhelmingly positive response to our Covid-initiated online service delivery, in particular enabling people who couldn’t previously access our Hubs to now receive support, it is likely that even when lockdown is lifted, Jami services will be delivered through a combination of in person and online interactions. To meet the increased demand Jami has expanded the service team by 25% with the appointment of additional occupational therapists, peer support workers and social workers.
It isn’t about getting the highest score in the quiz or writing the best piece on a Wednesday or even managing to follow all the body pretzeling directions in the exercise classes... it’s about being accepted and belonging.

Volunteering over the pandemic Volunteers are an essential part of Jami. Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to do nearly as much as we do now to support people living with mental illness. Since March 2020, volunteering at Jami has adapted to ensure that anyone experiencing mental health problems within our community could continue to access support, even during lockdown. During this time we have received over 180 enquiries from people interested in volunteering whilst current volunteers adopted new roles and challenges as part of Jami’s Covid response. Remaining socially connected even while physically isolated became more important than ever, with wider society acknowledging a greater understanding of the impact isolation and loneliness can have on our mental health. We launched our new Compeer befriending programme, pairing trained and dedicated volunteers with Jami service users, for regular telephone or Zoom chats. Doorstep chats became central to maintaining contact with those most vulnerable, which volunteers delivered alongside a hot meal. Over 2000 meals were delivered by our volunteers, ensuring no one was forgotten or alone. While Jami’s community hubs were forced to remain closed, hub groups and activities moved online with volunteers helping to expertly facilitate some of the groups. The support administered within these groups has become a lifeline to many since lockdown.
This pandemic has shown the very best in people. It’s been a huge effort for volunteers to be able to provide services to so many people, Jami volunteers are heroes. Adam Dawson, Jami Chair of Trustees

Head Room Education The Head Room Education team reaches out to provide learning and engagement for adults and young people across the community. We’re passionate educators and facilitators, providing conversations and courses about mental health. We work with organisations and individuals, offering relevant and inspirational content to a wide variety of audiences. This year has been unlike any other. At the start of the first lockdown we worked quickly to adapt our programme for online delivery. This has certainly been challenging, a challenge that our brilliant team of facilitators has absolutely risen to. Delivering an online programme has enabled us to open our courses and events up to a diverse audience, some of whom have been unable to engage face to face due to either location, caring responsibilities or situation. Throughout the pandemic, we have also been responding to the needs of the community with our content. We are dedicated to creating spaces where people can reflect, share and gain a new perspective on their experiences during lockdown and the pandemic, as well as life beyond. Alongside this, we’re focused on helping the whole Jewish community to respond to the mental health needs of everyone, through building the capabilities of others, from synagogue communities to professional caring organisations and university student groups. We’re seeing more appetite than ever for learning about mental health and we’re working harder to meet that need with our trademark brand of informed, compassionate and interactive education. Visit jamiuk.org/education for details of our latest courses.
ERIC In February 2020 we announced a communal response to suicide for schools and a joint initiative to help prevent suicide. The Emergency Response Initiative Consortium (ERIC) is a partnership of agencies that together provide guidance and a face to face first responder service to Jewish schools, following a student suicide or sudden traumatic death. The consortium, coordinated by Jami, is comprised of CST, Norwood, Grief Encounter, JBCS and in partnership with PaJeS. At the PaJeS Head Teachers’ conference we launched Coping after Suicide or Sudden Traumatic Death, a guidance document which includes initiatives to help prevent suicide. This ‘postvention’ strategy includes education, training and management tools to create an awareness and understanding of suicide, reduce the taboo around talking about suicidal feelings and encourage people to seek help. Due to interest from organisations external to the Jewish community we have now revised the guide and created a universal version to be shared with Barnet schools, working with our colleagues at Young Barnet and further afield. To date we have trained two cohorts of first responders from across our agencies so that in the event of a tragedy in a school a team can be mobilised to bring skilled and sensitive support to both students and staff. Social Enterprise Most café operators, like many in the hospitality sector, will remember 2020 as a year of absolute horror and uncertainty. Just as so many other cafés and restaurants were forced to close their doors in March, so did our Head Room Café. However, Head Room is no ordinary café. Able to provide so much more than (excellent) coffee and shakshuka, we very quickly adapted to ensure we still fulfilled our role to provide easy access to mental health support for the community and beyond. Within days of the first lockdown commencing, Jami opened the virtual doors of Head Room Café Online. The online programme, like the physical groups in the café, is free and open to anybody who wishes to attend. Jami service users or anyone else needing support were able to stay in touch and get involved in sessions such as Sharing Circle; Kind Co-Working and Art4All. Since March there have been around 2000 attendances at Head Room Online sessions, a 35% increase in the number of sessions run and a 46% increase in participants compared to before the pandemic. Looking forward, the team are recruiting additional staff to provide further support and facilitate more sessions in order to meet this increased demand. Of course, we didn’t completely abandon our ability to provide delicious, healthy food. We were very aware that many of our service users relied on Jami’s Community Hubs for their main hot meal of the day. With the Hubs closed, the staff at the café stepped in and since March, Head Room Café staff and committed volunteers have provided and delivered over 2000 meals to the most vulnerable
people we support. Even more importantly, the doorstep chats and check-in that take place when meals are delivered are as vital to maintaining health as the food itself. When the second lockdown forced the café to close its physical doors once again in October, the Social Enterprise team wanted to ensure that the values of Head Room continued to be shared across the community. Thus, our Chanukah Celebration Gift Boxes were launched in November. Full of delicious treats that could be sent to a loved one, purchasing one of the boxes also allowed us to provide some Chanukah cheer to our service users, delivering additional gift boxes to their homes alongside their usual meals. We also were able to provide Chanukah treats to people on mental health wards, ensuring they maintained a connection to the community and felt they were not forgotten. When ordering a box for a loved one, the purchaser had the option to request a ‘doorstep chat’ for the recipient. We have learned that the conversations that come with the food are just as vital to relieving isolation, and provide as much nourishment as the food itself. Due to the current lockdown, Head Room Café is closing its physical doors once again, but our virtual doors to our fantastic online programme remain very much open. Yes, it’s been a very difficult year, but it has also been wonderful to extend the reach of Head Room Café direct to peoples’ doorsteps and into their homes. These inspirational initiatives will continue long after we’ve moved on from the pandemic.

Mental Health Awareness Shabbat 31st January – 1st February
March
Over 150 communities, organisations and individuals throughout the UK, US and Israel took part in Jami’s MHAS which falls annually on Shabbat Bo, the weekly portion that reflects on the plague of darkness and has particular resonance with mental illness. We also saw the launch of a joint initiative with Maccabi GB, whereby all Maccabi affiliated football league and club matches held on Sunday 2nd February began with a 1-minute delay, allowing players, managers and spectators to think about their own mental health and wellbeing, or how they can support other people.
With the onset of Covid-19 we realised that the pandemic was as much a mental health crisis as a physical health one. We quickly adapted our services and prioritised our most vulnerable service users (Read more about Jami’s covid response on page 12).

Young Jami We are very excited to be going into our fourth year and are looking to continue to “bring light to mental health” for the younger generation throughout 2021 and beyond.
133%
increase in referrals for people under 25 struggling with their mental health over the last 3 months
Now, more than perhaps ever before, the challenges presented by mental health issues are at the forefront of our community and wider society. This is particularly true amongst our young people; 74% of those aged 16-25 reported a deterioration in their overall mental state since the beginning of the pandemic, and early reports suggest that the long term impact of this period will have the greatest effect on the mental and physical health of young people.
Young Jami has risen to the challenge of operating in the new normal. We continue to work hard to support young people and young professionals through this difficult time, raising awareness and funds to contribute towards vital mental health support. This year saw us launch a series of physical health events - as the link between good physical and mental health becomes increasingly well established. These events, consisting of a range of weekly workouts, nutrition advice and wellbeing tips from Jewish personal trainers to help people stay in tip top shape, were particularly key during those early lockdown days. In October, in the first event of its kind, we collaborated with Young Jewish Care, Young Norwood, Young UJIA and Young Gift to put on an inaugural cross communal young professionals event. A tastebud-tingling evening consisting of a virtual honey cake bake, run by the founder of the famous Palomar kitchen, sold over 200 tickets and raised £11,000 for the charities. Hopefully this is just the first of many collaborative events with the other wonderful young committees in our community. Finally, as we entered a second lockdown but with the excitement of Chanukah looming, we created a set of special edition Chanukah-themed wellbeing boxes, with a selection of edible treats, homely goodies and mental health boosting ideas for each of the 8 nights, which were sent to loved ones to help them celebrate the festival. We are grateful for the opportunity to work for such an amazing charity that focuses on such a worthy cause, and want to thank Jami for all the support they have given us in creating and operating a young committee. Young people are the future of our community and being able to encourage a more open conversation about mental health will help to put our community in a stronger place for the future. We are delighted to be a part of that journey. Thank you for your on-going support.

As always we are delighted to continue to support our charity in any way we can. Jami has grown so much over the last 31 years and has become the Jewish community’s dedicated mental health service. Although many people may not have realised it, the stress brought about by the pandemic has caused an increase in mental illness in the Jewish community. This in turn has created a greater demand for Jami’s services and at a time when our five hub day centres have had to be closed, necessitating the implementation of alternative support services. Only with your financial assistance will Jami be able to continue its essential work in our community. Thank you for your understanding and support and with our very best wishes to Jami for its continual success in helping those so much in need. Jean and Martin Aaron
