The nearest train station to the saleroom is Kemble (BR) which is on the London (Paddington) to Worcester Shrub Hill line. Train journey times from London are on average 90 minutes whether direct or with one change, and run at about one per hour from early until late. Several of the trains in each direction are direct and about half the services require a brief change at Swindon. INTRODUCTION We are very pleased to present our Autumn Sporting and Natural History auction, containing a fine selection of some of the best names in sporting art from the 19th century to the present day. Amongst the highlights of the sale are original paintings and watercolours by Archibald Thorburn, Henry Leonidas Rolfe, Joseph Dunn, George Henry Hall, George Edward Lodge, Cecil Aldin, John Cyril Harrison, Philip Rickman, Michael Lyne, Richard Robjent, David Cemmick, and Alistair Makinson. A remarkable collection of over 40 original hand-coloured lithographs by Edward Lear for Gould's Birds of Europe will also be offered for sale, along with fine illustrated books on natural history, both antiquarian and modern. The ancient art of taxidermy is represented by a wide variety of individual specimens, especially game and wild fowl, together with an impressive collection of rare and decorative fossils and minerals, some of which are many millions of years old. Last but not least, we are especially proud to be able to offer for sale several life size foundry bronze sculptures by the renowned wildlife artist David Cemmick, including the wonderful image of Jambo the gorilla, whose remarkable behaviour briefly captured the attention of the whole world in 1986. Jambo has spent the summer of 2010 on display at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and is now looking for a permanent new home!

The caricatures have spawned several books and many of the images have been made into limited edition prints. The artist has staged several sell-out exhibitions at leading London galleries and also at the Sloane Club. Miller, 1782, two fine and rare original pen and ink and watercolour drawings on one folio sheet, both birds (identified as A and B) on a small branch and facing left, identified Tab XXIV in ink upper left and with Miller’s dated neat inkinscription at foot, pencil identification in block capitals in a later unidentified hand at foot of sheet, the drawings one above the other contained within an area of approx. 30 x 21cm on one side of a sheet of laid paper with the watermarks of I. Villedary (name and ornamented crown with fleur-delys), a few minor marks and two small closed tears to blank areas of sheet, sheet size 49.5 x 33.5cm Both these South African birds (modern names Indicator indicator and unidentified) appeared as plate 24 in John Frederick Miller, ‘Icones animalium...’ published in 1785. It is a very rare (and nomenclaturally important) book with only two incomplete copies known to survive. A second edition with text by George Shaw was published in 1796 with the title ‘Cimelia physica, figures of rare and curious quadrupeds, birds, &c., together with several of the most elegant plants’. The work has a total of sixty plates, mostly ornithological but including animals and plants, and many of these were probably coloured by Miller himself. John Frederick Miller, son of the botanical artist John Miller, had been employed by Sir Joseph Banks, receiving from him numerous zoological specimens and information from which he made drawings. He also drew many of the artefacts collected on Captain Cook’s ‘Endeavour’ voyage of 1768-71, and with his brother James was to have accompanied Banks on Cook’s second voyage. When that plan failed, John Frederick accompanied Banks to the Orkneys, Hebrides, and Iceland in 1772. His drawings from that expedition are now held in the Natural History Museum, London. EDWARD LEAR (1812-1888) Lithographs for John Gould's Birds of Europe, 1832-37 Edward Lear is regarded as one of the finest exponents of 19th century ornithological art, and the illustrations he provided for John Gould's Birds of Europe are some of his greatest work. Whilst some of the illustrations are signed in the plate by Lear, many are not, and it remains uncertain as to exactly how many of the 448 coloured plates were provided by him. This fine collection of Lear's lithographs is one of the largest offered for sale by auction in recent times.

Jambo the Gorilla, a fine life size foundry bronze sculpture of Jambo the Gorilla, by David Cemmick and Sebastian Wylder, standing in characteristic pose on all fours looking to his right, one of a limited edition of 6, 145 x 160cm, approx. 200 kg This remarkable life size bronze sculpture is based on drawings made by David Cemmick in 1987, when he visited Jersey to sketch Jambo and other gorillas at Jersey Zoo, following the sensational story of Jambo and a five year old boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at the zoo on 31st August 1986. Levan Merrit was knocked unconscious after falling into the enclosure and his mother looked on in horror as the huge silver-back male gorilla walked over to the boy. However, Jambo sat down and appeared to guard him from other gorillas until the child was rescued by the fire brigade. Footage of the event, taken by amateur cameraman Brian Le Lion was sent around the world, and Jambo the Gentle Giant became instantly famous. This extraordinary work produced in an edition of six only, perfectly captures the huge strength of the animal, combined with a sense of quiet protectiveness. (1)

The heath hen was a sub-species of the North Americam Prairie chicken. Found in the scrubby heathland of coastal north America, the birds were extremely common, and were extensively hunted by settlers for food. By the late 18th century the birds were considered a poor man’s food and servants would often negotiate with their employer to not be given heath hen more than two days a week. The intense pressure of hunting led to a precipitous decline in the birds numbers and by 1890 only about 200 birds were left on the island of Martha’s Vineyard of the coast of Massachusetts. Despite strenuous attempts to save the bird, their numbers were gradually depleted by feral cats, a heath fire during the breeding season, severe winters, birds of prey and disease. The compiler appears to be a Capt. Holland-Hibbert. The gamebook covers game shooting and stalking in England and Scotland as well as three seasons in India where Junglefowl, Sandgrouse, Peafowl, Sambher, Leopard, Wild pig, Black buck, Jackal, Bear, Tiger and Panther, and all are noted meticuously along with the size of each animal shot. Holland-Hibbert appears to have been very well connected as his shooting parties often comprise of various members of the English aristocracy and senior army officers as well as various Maharajas when shooting in India. BIOGRAPHIES OF SELECTED ARTISTS
David Cemmick 1955-
George Edward Lodge 1860-1953
David Cemmick was born in Darlington, County Durham, in 1955, and turned to wildlife art following a training in animal anatomy at the World of Nature, Yorkshire. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in Environmental Illustration at the University of Sunderland for four years during the 1990s, but he has generally preferred to pursue his passion for wildlife through field expeditions around the world, including Kenya, Gambia, New Zealand, Madagascar, India, Europe and the Far East. In recent years, he has collaborated with the Master Mould-maker Sebastian Wylder (born 1971) to produce powerful, keenly observed animalier sculptures.
George Lodge was an outstanding artist. born in the same year as Archibald Thorburn. He was to live, hale and hearty, to the ripe old age of 93, painting to the last. Lodge’s enthusiasm for painting birds never left him and he lived long enough to see the publication of the twelve volumes of Bannerman’s ‘Birds of the British Isles’. With this work Lodge achieved his life’s ambition to draw all of our native birds. Lodge was also a very skilled taxidermist, who would often comment that it was impossible to draw the outside of a bird satisfactorily without an intimate knowledge of the inside.
John Cyril Harrison 1898-1985
Alistair Makinson 1961–
As a very young boy Harrison showed an outstanding talent for drawing, and his later sketch books reveal a rare understanding of form and draughtsmanship.
Harrison studied at the Slade School of Art, and for many years lived and worked in Norfolk. Like Edward Lodge, Harrison improved his knowledge of the anatomical structure of birds by becoming an excellent taxidermist.
Alistair Makinson was born in Whalley in Lancashire. He only started to paint whilst recovering from a broken elbow, and his first few exhibitions were so well received that he decided to turn professional after only a few years of painting. It was in 1996 that Alistair started to concentrate on sporting paintings, and in 1997 Malcolm Innes of the Tryon Gallery invited him to exhibit some of his Scottish River scenes in a Christmas exhibition in London. The preview was attended by HRH Princess Margaret and the following day a private viewing was arranged for HM the Queen Mother. With royal patronage Alistair’s career has gone from strength to strength. He still lives and works in the Ribble valley.
As a painter, Harrison was described by Aylmer Tryon the founder of the Tryon Gallery as an artist whose depiction of birds in flight surpassed even those of Archibald Thorburn.
Eric Meade-King (1911-1987)
Harrison usually sketched in the field and his work has an immediacy and life which captures the movement and character of his subjects. This extraordinary talent places him firmly in the vanguard of the best of the 20th century bird artists.
A prolific sporting author and artist, Eric Meade-King was educated at Malvern College and Westminster School of Art. His earliest exhibitions at the Greatorex Galleries in London, in 1937 and 1938 were enthusiastically received, as were his illustrations for Sport and Sportsmen of the New Forest by C.R. Acton, published in 1936 and ‘Hunting for All by the same author, published 1937, and his first work both written and illustrated by him, entitled The Silent Horn, Summer Sketches of Horse and Hound (1938). After serving with the household cavalry in the Second World War, Meade-King resumed his career as a sporting writer and artist.
Edward Lear 1812-1888 Edward Lear is ironically best known today for a piece of nonsense verse called ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’. Sadly Lear’s charming if somewhat nonsensical poems and limericks obscure a huge talent as an artist. Lear began painting at the age of sixteen and was only nineteen when he published ‘Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae or Parrots’. Lear’s brilliance came to the attention of the entrepreneurial John Gould and Gould enlisted Lear to help produce ‘The Birds of Europe’. It has long been argued that it was the lifelike and naturalistic Lear drawings which transformed Gould’s works, but Lear, with his faltering health – he was an epileptic - lack of business sense and general naivety never received the credit he deserved in Gould’s publications. However his genius is well recognised today and Edward Lear lithographs always attract a premium amongst collectors of ornithological works.

David Reid-Henry 1919-1977
Archibald Thorburn 1860-1935
Born near Kandy, Ceylon, into a family of naturalists and artists, David Reid-Henry was largely self-taught as an ornithological and wildlife painter, except for a little help from his father and the eminent George Edward Lodge. Following his wartime military service, he settled in Woodford Green, Essex, producing illustrations for books, journals and postage stamps. Reid-Henry emigrated to Rhodesia, where he married the botanist and ornithologist Louise Westwater in 1976, and an exhibition of his bird sketches was held at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 1979.
Archibald Thorburn has been described as ‘the greatest ornithological artist ever’, with a wonderful talent for placing his subjects in perfect harmony with their natural surroundings. At the age of twenty Thorburn’s work was accepted by the Royal Academy and in 1887 his reputation was secured by a commission to illustrate Lord Lilford’s ‘Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles’. This involved Thorburn painting 268 watercolours. Born in Scotland, Thorburn’s influence on the genre of natural history and sporting paintings is unsurpassed. Prolific, supremely gifted and unstinting in the help and guidance he offered artists who followed in his footsteps, Thorburn quite rightly deserves his place in the pantheon of truly great artists.
Philip Rickman 1891–1982 Philip Rickman studied under George Lodge and through Lodge got to know Archibald Thorburn. The influence of both of these great artists can be seen in Rickman’s work, but he also developed a style which is as individualistic as it is instantly recognisable. Rickman illustrated many books and for many years was a regular exhibitor at the Tryon gallery in London.
Owen Williams 1956– Owen Williams grew up on a hill farm in West Wales. His passion for fishing and shooting developed and nurtured a desire in him to capture the wildlife he saw when out with rod and gun. Entirely self taught Owen has developed a reputation as one of our leading wildlife and sporting artists. This widely held opinion was confirmed in 2003 when Owen was commissioned by the Royal Household to paint a picture for Prince William’s 21st. birthday. His work hangs in galleries and private collections throughout the world. He has illustrated several books and his work has adorned the covers and the contents of ‘The Shooting Gazette’ and The Shooting Times’.
Richard Robjent 1937– Richard Robjent is a true polymath of the sporting art world. An artist, publisher, naturalist and keen sportsman, Richard’s paintings of birds, wildlife and fishing scenes have placed him as a worthy successor to the sporting artists of an earlier era. His work has been compared to Archibald Thorburn, George Lodge and Philip Rickman. After attending Winchester College of Art, serving in the Army and travelling extensively, Richard’s first publication was a limited edition book written and illustrated by Philip Rickman. ‘A Selection of Bird Paintings and Sketches’ was enthusiastically received by the press and included a forward written by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Richard went on to both illustrate and publish a series of six monographs on game birds and wildfowl, the first of which was ‘The Woodcock’ in 1988, the last being ‘Sporting Wildfowl of the British Isles’ in 1999. This monumental undertaking resulted in Richard producing over 350 watercolours and 2400 sepia sketches. Richard’s paintings, watercolours and books are highly sought after and we are delighted to be able to offer a selection of his work. Richard’s latest project is to produce wildlife paintings in conjunction with his son Crispin. Crispin studied portrait and figure painting at the Charles Cecil Studios in Florence from 1998-2001. The school is famous for continuing the practices of the masters of this genre such as Titian, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Rubens. There are several examples of Richard and Crispin’s combined work in the auction, and two of Crispin’s portraits are on view in the gallery.
George Wright 1850–1942 George Wright was one of the foremost equestrian artists of his time. Born in Leeds, he was one of five children and both he and his brother Gilbert went on to become famous artists. Not much is known about George’s early life except that many of his early works are done ‘en grisaille’ leading one to believe that they were done as book or magazine illustrations. George Wright is best known for his strong and exceptionally well finished Hunting and Coaching paintings but he also painted horse racing, polo, and many horse portraits. In 1908 George moved from Rugby in Warwickshire to Oxford and from 1925 was under commission to Ackermanns in the U.K. and Grand Central Galleries in New York. He staged many successful exhibitions with both galleries. Many of his oil paintings were made into prints which spread his fame to a wider audience. He eventually retired to Seaford in Sussex where he died in 1942.

Crispin Robjent’s collaborative work with his father, Richard, is well represented in this sale. However these two portraits demonstrate Crispin’s original calling, which is to the naturalistic tradition of the old master portraitist. Trained at the Charles Cecil Studios in Florence, Crispin’s career has progressed rapidly, so much so that he is now returns regularly to his alma mater as tutor.

Conditions of Sale and Business 1. The Seller warrants to the Auctioneer and the buyer that he is the true owner or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims.
7. Any representation or statement by the Auctioneer in any catalogue, brochure or advertisement of forthcoming sales as to authorship, attribution, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price is a statement of opinion only. Every person interested should exercise and rely on his own judgement as to such matters and neither the Auctioneer nor his servants or agents are responsible for the correctness of such opinions. No warranty whatsoever is given by the Auctioneer or the seller in respect of any lot and any express or implied warranties are hereby excluded.
2. (a) The highest bidder to be the buyer. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen he has absolute authority to settle it or re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance of bidding or refuse a bid, divide any lot, combine any two or more lots or withdraw any lot without prior notice. (b) Where goods are bought at auction by a buyer who has entered into an agreement with another or others that the other or others (or some of them) shall abstain from bidding for the goods and the buyer or other party or one of the other parties is a dealer (as defined in the Auction Biddings Agreement Act 1927) the buyer warrants that the goods are bought bona fide on joint account.
8. (a) Notwithstanding any other terms of these conditions, if within fourteen days of the sale the Auctioneer has received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within fourteen days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneer in the same condition as at the time of the sale and satisfies the Auctioneer that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. "A deliberate forgery" means a lot made with intention to deceive. (b) A buyer's claim under this condition shall be limited to any amount paid to the Auctioneer for the lot and for the purpose of this condition the buyer shall be the person to whom the original invoice was made out by the Auctioneer.
3. The buyer shall pay the price at which a lot is knocked down by the Auctioneer to the buyer (“the hammer price”) together with a premium of 17.5% of the hammer price. Where the lot is marked by an asterisk the premium will be subject to VAT at 17.5% which under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme will form part of the buyer’s premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified (the premium added to the hammer price will hereafter collectively be referred to as “the total sum due”). By making any bid the buyer acknowledges that his attention has been drawn to the fact that on the sale of any lot the Auctioneer will receive from the seller commission at its usual rates in addition to the said premium of 17.5% and assents to the Auctioneer receiving the said commission.
9. Lots may be removed during the sale after full settlement in accordance with 4(d) hereof. 10. All goods delivered to the Auctioneer's premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction unless otherwise stated in writing and will be catalogued and sold at the Auctioneer's discretion and accepted by the Auctioneer subject to all these conditions. In the case of miscellaneous books, the Auctioneer reserves the right to extract and dispose of books that, in the opinion of the Auctioneer at his absolute discretion, have no saleable value and, therefore, might detract from the saleability of the rest of the lot and the Auctioneer shall incur no liability to the seller, in respect of the books disposed of. By delivering the goods to the Auctioneer for inclusion in his auction sales each seller acknowledges that he/she accepts and agrees to all the conditions.
4. (a) The buyer shall forthwith upon the purchase give in his name and permanent address and pay to the Auctioneer immediately after the conclusion of the auction the total sum due. (b) The buyer may be required to pay down during the course of the sale the whole or any part of the total sum due, and if he fails to do so after such request the lot or lots may at the Auctioneer's absolute discretion be put up again and resold immediately. (c) The buyer shall at his own expense take away any lot or lots purchased no later than five working days after the auction day. (d) The Auctioneer may at his own discretion agree credit terms with a buyer and extend the time limits for collection in special cases but otherwise payment shall be deemed to have been made only after the Auctioneer has received cash or a sterling banker’s draft or the buyer's cheque has been cleared.
11. (a) Unless otherwise instructed in writing all goods on the Auctioneer's premises and in their custody will be held insured against the risks of fire, burglary, water damage and accidental breakage or damage for which insurance the Auctioneer will charge a premium of £1.50 per £100. The value of the goods so covered will be the hammer price, or in the case of unsold lots the best bid, or in the case of loss or damage prior to the sale that which the specialised staff of the Auctioneer shall in their absolute discretion estimate to be the auction value of such goods. (b) The Auctioneer shall not be responsible for damage to or the loss, theft, or destruction of any goods not so insured because of the owner’s written instructions.
5. (a) If the buyer fails to pay for or take away any lot or lots pursuant to clause 4 or breaches any other condition of that clause the Auctioneer as agent for the seller shall be entitled after consultation with the seller to exercise one or other of the following rights: (i) Rescind the sale of that or any other lots sold to the buyer who defaults and re-sell the lot or lots whereupon the defaulting buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer any shortfall between the proceeds of that sale after deduction of costs of re-sale and the total sum due. Any surplus shall belong to the seller. (ii) Proceed for damages for breach of contract. (b) Without prejudice to the Auctioneer's rights hereunder if any lots or lots are not collected within five days or such longer period as the Auctioneer may have agreed otherwise, the Auctioneer may charge the buyer a storage charge of £1.00 + VAT at the current rate per lot per day. (c) Ownership of the lot purchased shall not pass to the buyer until he has paid to the Auctioneer the total sum due.
12. The Auctioneer shall remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller thirty days after the day of the auction provided that the Auctioneer has received the total sum due from the buyer. In all other cases the Auctioneer will remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller within seven days of the receipt by the Auctioneer of the total sum due. The Auctioneer will not be deemed to have received the total sum due until after any cheque delivered by the buyer has been cleared. In the event of the Auctioneer exercising his right to rescind the sale his obligation to the seller hereunder lapses.
6. (a) The seller shall be entitled to place a reserve on any lot and the Auctioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the seller for any lot on which a reserve has been placed. A seller may not bid on any lot on which a reserve has been placed. (b) Where any lot fails to sell, the Auctioneer shall notify the seller accordingly. The seller shall make arrangements either to re-offer the lot for sale or to collect the lot and may be asked to pay a commission not exceeding 50% of the selling commission and any special expenses incurred in cataloguing the lot. (c) If such arrangements are not made within seven days of the notification the Auctioneer is empowered to sell the lot by auction or by private treaty at not less than the reserve price and to receive from the seller the normal selling commission and special expenses.
13. In the case of the seller withdrawing instructions to the Auctioneer to sell any lot or lots, the Auctioneer may charge a fee of 12.5% of the Auctioneer's middle estimate of the auction price of the lot withdrawn together with Value Added Tax thereon and any expenses incurred in respect of the lot or lots. 14. The Auctioneer’s current standard notices and information (i.e. Collation and Amendments) will apply to any contract with the Auctioneer as if incorporated herein. 15. These conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English Law.
