THE JACK MAPPIN COLLECTION To commence at 10am

Jack Mappin (1931-2016). Jack Mappin was born in 1931, and attended Manchester Grammar School. He joined the Royal Air Force after the war, and rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant, flying Shackleton and Wellington aircraft for Coastal Command. After leaving the RAF he worked for both British Overseas Airways (BOA) and British Eagle, flying to Africa, the Middle East and Australia. Passionate about the Royal Air Force, in later years Jack was editor and press officer of “Intercom”, the magazine of the Aircrew Association, whose chief patrons were Arthur “Bomber” Harris, and Leonard Cheshire. Jack’s enthusiasm for military and aviation history led to the creation of an extensive private collection of military objects and memorabilia, to which he devoted the remainder of his life.

A group of awards comprising Silver Star, Air Medal, Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, American Defense Service, WWII Victory and American Campaign Medals, presented in a frame with brass plaque engraved ‘Sgt Edward W. Driscoll JR, Air Gunner 36047422, 64th Bomb Sqdrn, 43rd Bomb Group, K.I.A. 21 May 1943’, with white metal Gunners badge and cloth badges, 33 x 44cm plus a huge amount of copied paperwork, letters written by Driscoll, photographs, etc. 36047422 Air Gunner Edward Driscoll was born in Illinois, United States in 1918, he served as a radio operator on B-17E and was assigned to the 5th Air Force, 43rd Bombardment Group, 64th Bombardment Squadron. The aircraft was nicknamed ‘Honi Kuu Okole’ (Hawaiian for kiss my ass). In the early hours of 21 May 1943 the aircraft took off from Dobodura Airfield, Papua New Guinea, its mission to bomb an airfield near Rabaul, however the plane was attacked by a Japanese night fighter and seriously damaged, the pilot ordered the crew to bail out and only three managed to escape before the plane crashed into the ocean. Driscoll’s body was never recovered he is commemorated on the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines. (a carton) £200-300

604* Berlin Airlift O.B.E. group. A Berlin Airlift O.B.E. group of six attributed to Wing Commander G.A.E. Harkness, A.F.C., O.B.E., Royal Air Force, a veteran of the operations in South Kurdistan 1930-31, for which he was mentioned in despatches The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 2nd type, Military Division, Officer’s (O.B.E.) breast Badge, silver-gilt, Air Force Cross, G.VI.R., reverse officially dated ‘1944’, Africa Star, Defence and War Medals, Iraq Active Service Medal, mounted for wearing, generally good very fine, sold with copied papers and Hunt & Roskell Ltd case Provenance: DNW 24 June 2009 (Lot 1011) O.B.E. London Gazette New Year Honours 1950. A.F.C. London Gazette 8 June 1944’Squadron Leader Harkness has flown nearly 400 hours as Flight Commander of experimental flying in connection with the development of radar searchlights and gun laying equipment. An experienced pilot his work has been worthy of the highest praise.’

George Augustus Erskine Harkness, born in November 1901, was commissioned from the ranks of the Royal Air Force in May 1928, while serving in Egypt. Shortly thereafter posted to No. 70 (Bomber) Squadron at Hinaidi in Iraq, a Vickers Victoria unit which was re-designated for BomberTransport duties from May 1931, one of his first duties was to assist in the evacuation of nearly 600 men, women and children from Kabul during the Afghanistan disturbances of 1929, when the Squadron was temporarily based in India. Advanced to Flying Officer in November 1929, Harkness remained actively employed on bombing and transport duties, not least in the operations against the followers of Shaikh Mahmud in South-ern Kurdistan in the period October 1930 to May 1931, when No. 70’s aircraft flew a total of 1160 hours: Harkness was mentioned in despatches by Air Vice-Marshal Ludlow-Hewitt (London Gazette 6 May 1932 refers). No. 70 having then participated in day and night bombing operations against followers of Shaikh Ahmed of Barzan, Harkness returned home and was transferred to the Reserve of Air Force Officers in May 1933. Recalled on the renewal of hostilities, in the rank of Flying Officer, he was advanced to Squadron Leader in September 1941 and was awarded his A.F.C. in respect of the above cited deeds while serving at R.A.F. Defford - by which stage, according to the recommendation, his total flying time stood at a little over 5000 hours. Promoted to the temporary rank of Wing Commander in July 1945, he reverted to Squadron Leader in the General Duties Branch of the Royal Air Force in January 1947, when he joined the Secretarial Branch. Shortly afterwards, as a member of Personnel Staff of Transport Command, he lent valuable service in the Berlin Airlift, his duties in the U.K. involving extensive planning for the movement of 250 officers and 4,400 airmen back and forth to Germany - in fact in the recommendation for his resultant O.B.E., his work was described as being of ‘outstanding merit and vital to the smooth running of this Command and its efficiency in the Berlin Airlift’. Harkness was placed on the Retired List as a Wing Commander in February 1956. (6) £1000-1500

A pair of presentation pieces made from cannon balls each with a silver plated flame finial and base with ring turn handle, one with circular cartouche engraved Ramadie [sic] 28-917, the other with engraved base ‘Mesopotamia 1918, Presented to the Officer 6th Gurkhas by J.M.W.’, 14cm high, together with two other cannon balls, including an 8cm high ball mounted on a mahogany stand Probably table lighters. The second Battle of Ramadi was fought in Mesopotamia on 28 / 29 September 1917, the battle was a victory for the British Army resulting in 3500 Turkish casualties and prisoners of war. (4) £150-200

615* Medal. Distinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (751333. Sgt. E.A.F. Gibb. R.A.F.), extremely fine, with two cloth Observers badges and stripes plus copied paperwork DFM London Gazette 23 September 1941 ‘751333 Sergeant Eric Arthur Fawns Gibb, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 35 Squadron’. The recommendation states - Sergeant Gibb is an observer of outstanding ability possessed of a high order of courage. He has been the navigator in F/Off. Owen’s crew over a long period of operations and has contributed in a long period of operations and has contributed in a marked way to successes achieved. He is strongly recommended for recognition of the Distinguished Flying Medal. Sergeant Gibb flew on 29 Sorties from 20 July 1940 to 19 July 1941. On 30 June there was a daylight formation attack on Kiel (05.45), Sgt. Gibb was slightly wounded but did not report it to the Captain and continued his duties until the base was safely reached. On 19 July at 05.45 over Hanover the starboard inner engine failed after leaving target, aircraft landed safely at Bircham Down. Gibb was killed on 22 December 1941 whilst serving with No.28 Conversion Flight based at Leconfield, the Halifax L9522 was on a transit flight when it crashed on the Lincolnshire/ Leicestershire border, all crew were lost, Gibb is buried in the Edinburgh (Warriston) Cemetery. 634* RAF Squadron. Carved emblem of 56 Fighter Squadron, carved as a phoenix with burst of flames beneath, the base applied with a WWII period cloth blazer badge of the Squadron, 63cm high 56 Squadron were formed in Gosport in 1916 and were the first squadron to fly S.E.5a, the squadron had several WWI aces including Captain Albert Ball, VC, DSO & two Bars. They were one of the highest scoring squadrons during the Battle of Britain. (1) £100-150

637* Royal Air Force. A WWII RAF presentation piece, with plated eagle on a rough cut marble base applied with enamel RAF wings and presentation plaque engraved ‘Eagle Squadron, Royal Air Force 1940-1942, Sqdr-Ldr W.E.G. Taylor. U.S.N.A.S’, 21cm high Squadron Leader William E.G. Taylor, served with the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force Reserve. He received his Naval pilots licence in 1927 having left the Guggenheim College of Aeronautical University in New York. He was assigned to Fighting Squadron Five, Scouting Fleet. During the 1930s he was a commercial pilot with United Airlines and in 1939 when war broke out he joined the Fleet Air Arm, Royal Navy, where he was in combat operations aboard HMS Furious and HMS Glorious. He then joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and became the first Squadron Leader for the Eagle Squadron (71 Sqn, RAF). He later rejoined the United States Naval Reserve serving with them until 1951 when he joined Braniff Airlines in Panama and then was Vice President for Scandinavian Airlines System. (1) £200-300

THE MICHAEL SHAW COLLECTION OF AIRCRAFT SALVAGE Michael Shaw was born in 1935 into a family of scrap metal merchants, and after leaving school aged 15 in 1950 he joined his grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business, A. Shaw & Sons of Hounslow, specialising in army surplus vehicles. After a period of National Service serving in Korea and Malaya, Michael re-joined the company in 1957, working on aircraft that the company bought and stripped, from which period he began collecting name plates taken from the aircraft. In 1972, the firm purchased 170 tonnes of aircraft engines from International Alloys of Aylesbury, a major aluminium smelter, which included Bristol Hercules and Centaurus engines, American radial engines by Wright and Pratt & Whitney, and 142 German engines, including many by Daimler Benz and BMW. After the bulk of the aircraft were sold the company moved into the jet age and became specialists in this field, being on the government contract list for tenders. During this time the company were approached by film companies making war films who wanted vehicles and aircraft for their sets, and they built up a considerable fleet of historic transport available for hire, including the only roadworthy Sherman tank in the country. Amongst the numerous films for the company provided props were The Longest Day (1962), and The Battle of Britain (1969). This last-named classic film famously used 100 actual aircraft which were adapted and modified to the required historical period. In 1979, Michael set up his own company, M.L. Shaw, as a supplier of aeronautical and marine equipment, working alongside R.J. Coley of Hounslow, buying and selling engines and aircraft parts. During this later period, Michael worked on over 150 films and television programmes, including Star Wars I, II & III, and 19 of the James Bond films. One memorable achievement was the full scale replica cockpit and interior of a B17 for which Michael supplied all the aircraft instruments and fittings on set at Pinewood in just two weeks for the American war film Memphis Belle (1990). He retired aged 70.

A unique private collection of 195 screw mounted aircraft engine name plates, collected from 1958 to 1985, ranging from WWI to Concorde era, representing aircraft from Britain, America, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Russia, including Armstrong Siddeley, Alvis, Napier, Armstrong Whitworth, Cirrus, Rolls Royce (including all the Rolls Royce Avon Mks), Pratt & Whitney, Bristol, De Havilland, Dornier, BMW, General Electric, Alison, Franklin, Wright etc, mostly approximately 10 x 8cm, displayed on a large presentation board with wooden frame, 127 x 186cm The earliest plate in the collection is the Rolls-Royce Hawk, No 1, which according to the Rolls Royce Heritage Trust was built on 16 September 1916. 663* B.A.C. TSR2 XR 219. A pair of compressor fans from XR 219, 102cm diameter, presented in wooden frames with engraved brass plaques The XR 219 was powered by two Bristol Siddeley Olympus 320 engines, it flew for a total of 13 hours 9 minutes from 27 September 1964 to 6 April 1965. When the project was cancelled XR 219 was moved from Boscombe Down to the gunnery ranges at Dungeness to be broken up. The engines were removed and then laid on the marsh for many years until the ranges closed. The engines were then sold on tender for scrap metal and these LP compressor fans were saved. The fans are believed to be made of molybium, a high duty alloy which was designed to take massive bird strikes, in fact in the development stage frozen chickens were used to test the durability! BAC TSR2 XR 219 was a cancelled Cold War strike and reconnaissance aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for the Royal Air Force in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was designed to penetrate a well defended forward battle area at low altitudes and at very high speeds and then attack high value targets in the rear with nuclear or conventional weapons. The TSR2 was cancelled due to rising costs and inter-service squabbling over Britain's future defence needs which led to the controversial decision to scrap the programme in 1965. (2) ÂŁ4000-6000

The first airship was constructed and flown 30 miles from Crystal Palace to Ruislip in 1902, it carried an advertisement for ‘baby food’, following on from this a second airship was built called ‘Baby’ making her maiden flight in May 1909. A very scarce Iron Cross side fuselage section and data plates from German Focke Wulf FW-190 A5 Werke-Nr 1227 flown by Paul Ratz of JG-54 Green Hearts, presented in a frame with the complete history of the crashed aircraft after being shot down in 1943 and its discovering in Russia in 1989 in a woodland clearing also shown in the frame Staff Sergeant Paul Ratz had been a ground crew member before becoming a pilot in Gruppe (Squadron) I of JG54 in 1942/43. On 19 July 1943 he was flying in formation with another FW190 they crossed the Dvina River which marked the front line, from there they headed east. At Voibakala they found an armoured tran and attacked it through a barrage of Flak. Ratzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aircraft was hit and crash landed in woodland. Ratz survived the crash but was captured by the Russian forces. He was taken to a POW camp and remained there until 1959. (1) ÂŁ2000-3000

A WWII German Pilots or Observers Air Crew Beobachtungsuhr wristwatch (or B watch) made by LACO 22 Steine circa 1944, 5cm diameter black dial with Arabic numerals, serial number D-06044, stamped on the inside of the rear cover with werk number 127 560b-1, 6044, the rear cover is stamped H6044 (matching to inside numbers) and faint ink stamp markings 24.4.44, the side of the watch is also engraved FL 23883, with part wrist strap and in full working order having been recently fully serviced These watches were Luftwaffe property. In WWII they were given to observers before the flight and had to be returned just after the landing. The watch also comes with provenance of how it was brought back from Germany in WWII by a British soldier Private James Alfred Bartlett (7655397) who was attached to 12th battalion Hampshire regiment part of the 43rd division Wessex. With copies of his army book and pictures. The watch was obtained from a German pilot who was a prisoner of war in allied hands and gifted the watch to Private Bartlett for tending his wounds etc near Glinstedt just prior to the Battle of Bremen. An Omega Speedmaster Alaska Project wristwatch, limited edition 595/1970, ref: 31132423004001, watch number: 77207011, in mint condition with original case, documentation and box In 1970, Omega developed a Speedmaster that was a bit different from the then current Moonwatch models. They called it the Alaska project (it had to withstand extreme temperatures, especially those on the dark side of the Moon) and therefore Omega came up with the solution of an external casing made of red-anodised aluminium. The project title Alaska was from then on used for every assignment they did for NASA, like this 1978 Alaska III project watch that was re-certified for the Space Shuttle missions. The Omega Speedmaster Alaska Project 311.32.42.30.04.001 was introduced in 2008 and only 1970 watches were produced. Like the original model, the Alaska Project limited edition came with a red outer casing and an additional long white strap. (1) £3000-5000

An iconic section from the USAAF 379th Bomb Group B17 which crashed in Essex in 1945, approx. 30cm high Believed to have been part of the aircraft which crashed on 10 May 1945 over Braintree, Essex, killing all 11 servicemen. The B-17 Flying Fortress was cut in half and burst into flames after it collided with another aircraft in a formation flying to Germany. The tail of the aeroplane finished in Woolpack Lane after it separated from the fuselage, which landed near the gardens of the Franciscan Convent in Broad Lane. The propeller tip was taken as a souvenir at the time and later discovered in a barn near the crash site in 2007. (1) £100-150

A two-bladed propeller made by the Lang Propeller Company c.1916-17, the drawing number LP3420 indicates that it was made for a Nieuport Scout, powered by the 110hp Le Rhone engine, it also carries the Lang serial number L/12940, 245cm long, together with an unidentified aircraft strut The Nieuport Scout was a French aircraft made in England under licence. The airscrew is also of French design similarly made by the British Lang company. The Nieuport 17 was used in France by several RFC squadrons and one RNAS squadron. 764* RAF Bomber Command No. 8 (Pathfinder Force) Group. An archive of over 1,000 mostly vintage photographs from the collection of Squadron Leader Howard Lees (1907-2006), circa 1942-46, including approximately 700 night and day bombing aerial photographs, photograph time, place, altitude, photographer, etc. details in the image at foot of each photograph, plus photographs of 63 Pathfinder HQ staff, London and Paris, aircraft, technical photos, photographs of India, Sumatra and Borneo (1945-46), etc., sizes varied from approximately 33 x 29cm to 13.5 x 14cm, arranged by subject in 14 folders, ring binders and packets, various sizes An important archive belonging to a technical expert whose work on aerial photography greatly helped to improve the accuracy of wartime bombing. Lees was involved in at least two important developments which helped to improve accuracy by proving or disproving whether bombers had actually been over the target as claimed. These included the two-shutter (master/slave) camera which helps eliminate the frequent ruining of images caused by ground fires and a single prolonged exposure. Another of his developments was H2S photography that enabled the RAF to bomb a target even when cloud was obscuring it; the photographic developments in which Lees was involved enabled the cathode ray tube image of the target to be recorded at the moment a bomb was released. Lees’s work on H2S was so secret that he had to process the results himself, rather than allow them to be released to the station photo sections. He also designed a combined target marker and photo flash device for Mosquito bombers, which helped to improve the effectiveness of the Light Night Striking Force. Key German cities were thereafter regularly photographed at night from heights above 27,000 feet. At the end of the war in Europe Lees was posted to Burma but finding that the unit had been disbanded and that there was no one to feed or pay him he went to Bangkok and then was eventually posted to Jakarta. He was mentioned in dispatches twice and his final appointment before demobilisation in 1946 was at HQ Allied Command South-East Asia, where he was involved in the aerial survey of the region. After the war he returned to Charles Twite & Co, of Wigston, Leicester. He had begun work for this manufacturers’ agents in the shoe trade as an office boy at age 16, and after returning became managing director and chairman. An archive of approximately 50 designs relating to the Mk 1 SUMPA (Southampton University Man-Powered Aircraft), circa 1960-63, mostly large-scale reproductions of designs and plans by A. Lassiere of drawings made for his M.Sc (Eng.) thesis in April 1963, many reproduced and laminated in recent years, approximately 50 x 75cm and similar sizes, contained in a portfolio, together with 4 ring binders of Lassiere’s original manuscript notes including numerous calculations In 1961, a group of pioneering aeronautical engineering students made aviation history by designing, building and flying the world’s first human-powered aircraft, that is an aircraft powered solely by the human(s) on board, and without mechanical or motorised assistance to become airborne, cruise or land. The team of postgraduate students comprised Alan Lassiere, David Williams and Ann Marsden who began the work in early 1960. The single-seat aircraft was built from balsa, plywood and aluminium, and covered in nylon. It was powered by cycle pedals which gave it forward momentum on the ground and provided power to a large propeller for flight. The maiden flight on 9 November 1961 covered a distance of approximately 64 metres, just 1.8 metres above the runway. The aircraft was developed further before being retired after a crash, and is now on display in Southampton at the Solent Sky Museum. (an archive) £300-500

Roller printed dye on flax, a portion salvaged from the wing of a captured late war German aircraft (see hand written note on fabric - dated “1919”) - likely to have been brought to England, examined, flown and tested to destruction as were many “enemy” aircraft, of the 4 colour 1918 pattern designed for the under surfaces. Slight fading of the colours, has length of “rib tape” which was of the “Upper” surface colour way and was cut into strips and doped over rib positions to protect stitched areas from weather ingress, unusually exhibiting steel grommet “drain holes” - which allowed moisture to drain from inside the airframe. These were given to Private 40520 Adam Shaw, Cameronian Scottish Rifles, who was killed in action on 21st September 1918. Whilst being treated for wounds in Belgium, Shaw was cared for by a nun in the Ypres area. Holiday’s early life was spent in St. John’s Wood, London, and from his window he had his first contact with horses while watching the Royal Horse Artillery from his window. He was educated at Westminster and then studied at the R.A. Schools. He worked as an illustrator at The Graphic, The Tatler and the Illustrated London News. Holiday served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery on the Western Front during the First World War and painted many pictures for army messes. (1) £1000-1500

As a Leib Regiment, it owed personal loyalty to the Hessian Duchy family. Not surprisingly, therefore, the “A” on the epaulette signifies Großherzogin Alice von Hesse who was the Regiment’s equivalent to the titular Royal/Ducal Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment. 951 WWI - German Diary. A monumental fair copy transcript of the letters of Walter Berlin of the 8th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment, written to his mother Lina Berlin in Nuremburg, 1914-18, 9 volumes, written up 1933-37 for Walter’s 50th birthday, neatly written in purple ink in a large and legible but very difficult hand to rectos and versos throughout, beginning at the start of the war in August 1914 and writing almost daily until the end of the war in 1918, 1914 as 1 volume, each year thereafter bound as 2 volumes, a total of approximately 3,500 numbered pages, a few scattered diagrams, some original letters, postcards, telegrams, memos, a menu, etc. tipped in, contemporary brown boards, each titled in gilt ‘Weltkrieg’ with year and part numbering, rubbed, one spine near detached, folio (33 x 22cm) An incredible and thorough record of a German Jewish artillery officer’s complete war. His regiment was on the Western Front and engaged actively from the beginning to the end of the war. It was present at the Battle of Alsace Lorraine, Verdun, Battle of the Somme, Battle of Arras and the big battles of 1918. Dr Walter Berlin (1887-1963) was born in Nuremberg. He studied law, obtaining his doctorate in 1913. Throughout the First World War he served in the 8th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment and was discharged as captain and battery commander. He was awarded the Iron Cross First and Second Class and the Bavarian Order of Military Merit Fourth Class with Crown and Swords. He also had the badge signifying that he’d been wounded. From 1919 Dr Walter Berlin practised as a solicitor in Nuremberg, and actively represented Jewish interests. He was a chairman of the Nuremburg branch, and a member of the National Board, of the Central Union of German Citizens of Jewish Faith (the ‘Central-Verein’) whose main purpose was the fight against antiSemitism. In this capacity he gave evidence, in 1929, against the Nazi ‘Gauleiter’ Julius Streicher before a jury in a Nuremburg court. Streicher was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for incitement to class hatred. After the Nazis came to power in January 1933, Jewish lawyers were forbidden to represent ‘Aryan’ clients and Walter Berlin acted exclusively for Jews. In his efforts to help endangered Jews Walter Berlin was often supported by the Nuremburg police president, Dr Benno Martin. Later, during what became known as the ‘Kristallnacht’ on 9th and 10th November 1938, Berlin was arrested by SAmen and severely beaten resulting in the loss of one eye. He was released from prison at the end of November but had his right to practise as a lawyer taken away. In April 1939 Walter and his wife Rose emigrated to England, reuniting with their two children towards the end of the year in London. In London he joined fellow refugees from Germany and founded the Belsize Square Synagogue. Initially unemployed, he became a fire watcher during the Second World War for the owners of a London office building. His main task was to make German incendiary bombs harmless during air raids and for this he was awarded the British Defence medal. He took up accountancy learning the profession in the office building which he guarded. He worked as an accountant until the end of his life, dying in London on 21 August 1963 aged 76. (9)

During the 5 to 7 August 1918 the regiment marched to the front line ready to follow up the offensive launched by the allied forces. The artillery barrage opened at 04.20 on 8 August with The Bays moving forward from Longeau just outside Amiens, they sheltered by 05.20 in some woods West of Villiers Brettoneax, the A & B Squadrons were sent forward and by 07.40 both Squadrons had advanced along the line of the Amiens - Peronne - St Quentin Road, the picklehaube is a war souvenir from this action. Commissioned Lieutenant with the Royal Army Medical Corps (attached to 2nd Bn, Bedfordshire Regiment) and served on the Western Front from 12 August 1914, he was mentioned in despatches on 30 November 1914, for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field at Neufchatel and Festubert he was wounded by fragments of high explosive shell on 17 May 1915, when bringing in wounded men from the trenches taken from the Germans at Festubert and died very suddenly at the Duchess of Westminster’s Hospital at Le Touquet, Paris-Plage on 5 June 1915, Watson was the first officer buried in the British Cemetery at Etaples. H.L.I.), 1939-1945 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence and War Medals, light contact marks to first therefore generally extremely fine, mounted for wearing, with M.M. card box of issue dated 24.1.46, Soldier’s Service and Pay Book, bonnet hat with regimental badge and tailor’s label inscribed to recipient, identity tags and original documents and photographs of the recipient in military uniform MM London Gazette 24 January 1946 No.14725302 Corporal (acting) Leslie Paul Tye, The Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) (Retford). Joining the Bn in September 1944 at Helmond as a Private Soldier Cpl Tye has fought through the campaigns of Holland and Germany with great determination, courage and loyalty. In battle his coolness under fire and clear judgement has gained for him. At Moyland woods on the 14th February 45 whilst still a private during a particularly unpleasant engagement, when the company was under direct fire from an enemy SP gun, he crawled forward on his own initiative to within 50 yards to knock out the gun with two well aimed shots. Returning to his section to find his section commander had been wounded Cpl Tye immediately rallied his section and led them on to their final objective. Again on the 27th March during the very heavy fighting that preceded the break out from the Rhine bridgehead this NCO’s cheerfulness and unfailing devotion to duty did much to inspire his men. During one attack that day when the company came under direct fire from small arms and “flak” guns thus holding the forward platoons up. Cpl Tye whose section was then in reserve personally and with great gallantry led his section to attack the enemy post from the rear. So determined was this attack that post surrendered, thus enabling the company to gain his objective. Throughout the campaigns this NCO has set a constantly high standard of gallantry and unfailing devotion to duty. His coolness under fire, cheerfulness and courage has been an inspiration to all. The fine example set by this NCO is beyond all praise. (5) £1200-1500

Dean was awarded the British Empire Medal which was Gazetted in the 13 June 1946 Supplement. The group included with the lot was consigned from the same estate. Dean joined 51st Highland Division, he was injured twice in Sicily and then in Normandy where he was wounded in a mortar attack a day after he landed, the Guardian obituary quotes a ‘he looked down at his bleeding chest and noticed he was wearing his shirt back to front’, interestingly his father was Basil Dean the founder of Ealing Film Studios. CONDITIONS OF SALE AND BUSINESS 1. The Seller warrants to the Auctioneer and the buyer that he is the true owner or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 2. (a) The highest bidder to be the buyer. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen he has absolute authority to settle it or re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance of bidding or refuse a bid, divide any lot, combine any two or more lots or withdraw any lot without prior notice. (b) Where goods are bought at auction by a buyer who has entered into an agreement with another or others that the other or others (or some of them) shall abstain from bidding for the goods and the buyer or other party or one of the other parties is a dealer (as defined in the Auction Biddings Agreement Act 1927) the buyer warrants that the goods are bought bona fide on joint account. 3. The buyer shall pay the price at which a lot is knocked down by the Auctioneer to the buyer (“the hammer price”) together with a premium of 19.5% of the hammer price. Where the lot is marked by an asterisk the premium will be subject to VAT at 23.40% which under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme will form part of the buyer’s premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified (the premium added to the hammer price will hereafter collectively be referred to as “the total sum due”). By making any bid the buyer acknowledges that his attention has been drawn to the fact that on the sale of any lot the Auctioneer will receive from the seller commission at its usual rates in addition to the said premium of 19.5% and assents to the Auctioneer receiving the said commission. 4. (a) The buyer shall forthwith upon the purchase give in his name and permanent address and pay to the Auctioneer immediately after the conclusion of the auction the total sum due. (b) The buyer may be required to pay down during the course of the sale the whole or any part of the total sum due, and if he fails to do so after such request the lot or lots may at the Auctioneer's absolute discretion be put up again and resold immediately. (c) The buyer shall at his own expense take away any lot or lots purchased no later than five working days after the auction day. (d) The Auctioneer may at his own discretion agree credit terms with a buyer and extend the time limits for collection in special cases but otherwise payment shall be deemed to have been made only after the Auctioneer has received cash or a sterling banker’s draft or the buyer's cheque has been cleared. 5. (a) If the buyer fails to pay for or take away any lot or lots pursuant to clause 4 or breaches any other condition of that clause the Auctioneer as agent for the seller shall be entitled after consultation with the seller to exercise one or other of the following rights: (i) Rescind the sale of that or any other lots sold to the buyer who defaults and re-sell the lot or lots whereupon the defaulting buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer any shortfall between the proceeds of that sale after deduction of costs of re-sale and the total sum due. Any surplus shall belong to the seller. (ii) Proceed for damages for breach of contract. (b) Without prejudice to the Auctioneer's rights hereunder if any lots or lots are not collected within five days or such longer period as the Auctioneer may have agreed otherwise, the Auctioneer may charge the buyer a storage charge of £1.00 + VAT at the current rate per lot per day. (c) Ownership of the lot purchased shall not pass to the buyer until he has paid to the Auctioneer the total sum due. 6. (a) The seller shall be entitled to place a reserve on any lot and the Auctioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the seller for any lot on which a reserve has been placed. A seller may not bid on any lot on which a reserve has been placed. (b) Where any lot fails to sell, the Auctioneer shall notify the seller accordingly. The seller shall make arrangements either to re-offer the lot for sale or to collect the lot and may be asked to pay a commission not exceeding 50% of the selling commission and any special expenses incurred in cataloguing the lot. (c) If such arrangements are not made within seven days of the notification the Auctioneer is empowered to sell the lot by auction or by private treaty at not less than the reserve price and to receive from the seller the normal selling commission and special expenses.

7. Any representation or statement by the Auctioneer in any catalogue, brochure or advertisement of forthcoming sales as to authorship, attribution, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price is a statement of opinion only. Every person interested should exercise and rely on his own judgement as to such matters and neither the Auctioneer nor his servants or agents are responsible for the correctness of such opinions. No warranty whatsoever is given by the Auctioneer or the seller in respect of any lot and any express or implied warranties are hereby excluded. 8. (a) Notwithstanding any other terms of these conditions, if within fourteen days of the sale the Auctioneer has received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within fourteen days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneer in the same condition as at the time of the sale and satisfies the Auctioneer that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. "A deliberate forgery" means a lot made with intention to deceive. (b) A buyer's claim under this condition shall be limited to any amount paid to the Auctioneer for the lot and for the purpose of this condition the buyer shall be the person to whom the original invoice was made out by the Auctioneer. 9. Lots may be removed during the sale after full settlement in accordance with 4(d) hereof. 10. All goods delivered to the Auctioneer's premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction unless otherwise stated in writing and will be catalogued and sold at the Auctioneer's discretion and accepted by the Auctioneer subject to all these conditions. In the case of miscellaneous books, the Auctioneer reserves the right to extract and dispose of books that, in the opinion of the Auctioneer at his absolute discretion, have no saleable value and, therefore, might detract from the saleability of the rest of the lot and the Auctioneer shall incur no liability to the seller, in respect of the books disposed of. By delivering the goods to theAuctioneer for inclusion in his auction sales each seller acknowledges that he/she accepts and agrees to all the conditions. 11. (a) Unless otherwise instructed in writing all goods on the Auctioneer's premises and in their custody will be held insured against the risks of fire, burglary, water damage and accidental breakage or damage. The value of the goods so covered will be the hammer price, or in the case of unsold lots the lower estimate, or in the case of loss or damage prior to the sale that which the specialised staff of the Auctioneer shall in their absolute discretion estimate to be the auction value of such goods. (b) The Auctioneer shall not be responsible for damage to or the loss, theft, or destruction of any goods not so insured because of the owner’s written instructions. 12. The Auctioneer shall remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller thirty days after the day of the auction provided that the Auctioneer has received the total sum due from the buyer. In all other cases the Auctioneer will remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller within seven days of the receipt by the Auctioneer of the total sum due. The Auctioneer will not be deemed to have received the total sum due until after any cheque delivered by the buyer has been cleared. In the event of the Auctioneer exercising his right to rescind the sale his obligation to the seller hereunder lapses. 13. In the case of the seller withdrawing instructions to the Auctioneer to sell any lot or lots, the Auctioneer may charge a fee of 12.5% of the Auctioneer's middle estimate of the auction price of the lot withdrawn together with Value Added Tax thereon and any expenses incurred in respect of the lot or lots. 14. The Auctioneer’s current standard notices and information (i.e. Collation and Amendments) will apply to any contract with the Auctioneer as if incorporated herein. 15. These conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English Law.
