Furniture, Works of Art & Clocks Recent media reports would have potential sellers of antiques and works of art believing that there is little market for their items. This may have rung true for those pieces of furniture which in past years have seen prices propped up by the shipping market, which has indeed been unpredictable. For those items that are rare and of quality or decorative and fashionable auction following is stronger than ever; especially now with every lot offered at Halls being available through live internet bidding. We look forward to expanding this section in our 2014 calendar along with a new format ‘Oak and Vernacular’ auction in the new year.

Some of the thirty five work collection show a great affinity with The Master and depict ‘The Rigi Lucerne’ in several different lights. There is an exquisite little gem of a drawing of ‘Hastings, Sussex’ and other English views of ‘Robin Hood’s Bay,Whitby’ ‘Oystermouth Castle, Swansea’ and ‘Beachy Head’. More interestingly this collection has never before been on the market and is by direct descent from the artist’s family.

In 2012, Halls was a founder member of the Association of Accredited Auctioneers, an organization of 21 regional auctioneers who came together to forge new links with the emerging market in China. In April 2013, Halls Fine Art’s Director, Jeremy Lamond, participated in the first auction of Western Antiques in Xiamen Freeport, China and established many valuable contacts with Chinese officials, collectors and dealers in Beijing and Xiamen. AAA auctions in China, involving Halls, look set to be a regular feature of Halls’ auction calendar.

EUROPEAN CERAMICS & GLASS The interest in European Ceramics and Glass has proven to be consistently high. Recent results at Halls have shown that the pieces which sell well are those which are good quality, highly investable and aesthetically pleasing. Whilst the more traditional sector of the collectible ceramics market has seen a dip in interest, this can be put down to a change in fashions and tastes rather than a decline of interest in the market as a whole. As a result, other areas have seen a marked rise in popularity and it is in these areas that we are looking forward to expanding our involvement. This next year will see us growing our number of high quality lots in dedicated sections of Fine Antique sales.

SILVER & JEWELLERY Recent jewellery and silver auctions have demonstrated that it is the pieces with a history, name and story that are most sought after in the current market. Pieces dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, spanning from Victorian, to Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and finally Art Deco appear to generate the most interest. The characteristic tendril pattern of Art Nouveau or the bold geometric shapes of Art Deco are arguably the most favoured, perhaps not only due to their aesthetic qualities but the fact that during these periods, the 1900’s and the 1920’s-1940’s, these new and exciting styles epitomised luxury, wealth and the absolute height of fashion.

Over the past year the silver market has proved to be as buoyant as ever, with all silver sales boasting an almost 100% selling rate. The most popular pieces are those usually possessing the mark of a particularly sought after maker or designer. This same pattern appears to be consistent with the desirability of watches; if the maker is established the prices will be high.

Watches Wristwatches and pocket watches have always been, and still are, in great demand. In particular the premier division wristwatches of Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Breitling, Cartier, Rolex and Omega will always sell well and have a prominent place in the market. The 18ct gold cased full hunter, half-hunter and open faced pocket watches are eagerly sought after by collectors and dealers alike, this of course also applies to the 15ct and 9ct gold pocket watches. Although the silver cased pocket watches tend to be a little less buoyant, due to the sheer number manufactured, the 18th and 19th century pair cased examples are in great demand.

Our auctions also include accessories, luggage, fashion illustrations and literature, quilts, needlework, linen and lace, Oriental & European textile and furs. Toy auctions are a wonderful part of our calendar and the Dinky toy is a classic example. MILITARIA The demand for good quality militaria items remains strong. Provenance in particular appears to be key to whetting the buyer’s appetite, and it is those pieces which have a good history behind them which are inciting all the interest. Collectors’ interests remain broad, and the antique arms and armour market is proving to still have a lot to give. With our specialist military sections and online bidding facilities reaching a captive worldwide audience, the only way is up. Looking forward, we expect to capitalise on this stability and see even bigger and better results at auction.
