ERIC CLEMENTS

Born in 1925 Eric Clements is best known for his work as a consultant designer for Mappin & Webb Ltd which spread over seven years.

After studying at both Birmingham College of Art and the Royal College of Art between 1949 and 1953, he won a travelling scholarship and spent three weeks in Scandinavia where he was impressed by the works of silverware designers, Sigurd Persson, Henning Koppel and Hans Hansen. Throughout his career he executed a number of ceremonial commissions, for example a coffee set for the Queen of Denmark from H.M. The Queen (1957) and the sword of office for the Chief of the Air Staff, R.A.F. (1959). He began the curvaceous Clements pattern in 1960, producing eleven initial designs while at the same time developing his signature which graces the base of all of his pieces. The tea set was produced in both sterling silver and Mappin Plate (EPNS) with the bodies of the vessels being “blown” into a two part mould. This design, which bears Clements name, has become one of his most famous and successful; in fact it was so popular that it remained in production well into the 1990s.

MYLES BIRKET FOSTER, R.W.S (1825-1899)

The artist was born in North Shields & moved to London when he was five, he was apprenticed to one of the leading wood engravers of the day, Ebenezer Landells who in turn had been a pupil of Thomas Bewick. He first cut blocks then produced drawings for the magazines, "Punch","The Illustrated London News," and many other publications. He illustrated Longfellows, "Evangeline", & Roger's "Italy".

In 1846 he set up on his own and illustrated books, he turned to painting chiefly watercolours in 1859, and in total contributed some four hundred examples at The Water Colour Society, also exhibiting at The Royal Academy between 1859-1881. He travelled extensively around the continent and made many visits to Italy, particularly Venice, largely on commission from Charles Seeley to produce 50 Venetian drawings for a total of ÂŁ5,000.

In 1863 he built a house in Witley near Godalming, and it is for his Surrey views that he is best known today, meticulously worked up with astounding technical skill, and a fine sense of composition, as well as a command of colour. Manuscripts relating to the artists life are held at The Victoria & Albert Museum.

EUGÈNE GALIEN-LALOUE (1854-1941)

Eugène Galien-Laloue was born in Paris in 1854. He was mainly known for his impressionist portrayal of Parisian street scenes. In 1877 he was a student of Charles Laloue, a long-time member of the Artistes Français. During the early part of his career he used a number of pseudonyms to overcome an exclusive contract with a major gallery. These included L. Dupuy, J. Lievin and E. Galiany, all of which are listed in the catalogue raisonne. Galien-Laloue worked mainly in gouache with a light, expressive style. He depicted the Parisian street scenes of the early 1900's with an accuracy that reflected that iconic era. Indeed he was one of the first painters to historically represent these bustling streets and as such has been a great influence to a host of later artists, such as Edouard Cortès and Antoine Blanchard.

ALBERT GOODWIN R.W.S. (1845-1932)

By Direct Descent from the Artist to the Present Vendor. The Painter was an ardent admirer of Joseph Mallord William Turner, his first exhibit was at the Royal Academy in 1860, when he was aged just,15, during the next decade he was a pupil of the Pre-Raphaelite Painters Arthur Hughes and Ford Maddox Brown who introduced him to the art critic and painter John Ruskin who took him on a trip to Italy, some of the drawings we are selling may relate to that tour in 1872. He travelled widely in Europe, India, Egypt, and the South Sea Islands,. He studied the effects of light and atmosphere very carefully and Hardie wrote, "he can be counted as one of those who have successfully dealt with twilight and sunset". He experimented with methods of sponging and stippling and was one of the first to use a pen-line in combination with watercolour wash. Reynolds wrote "he often reached a higher plane of poetry, with even a hint of mystery in his pictures".

12th June – Sale Report

Pictures, Silver & Jewellery and The Jane Griffiths Collection The June sale was characterized by the dispersal of the collections of the late Jane Griffiths of Gallery 17 in Shrewsbury and the interest in her lots was a reflection of her tremendous eye and good taste. Many followers and collectors turned up for the sale simply to buy a part of her legacy and have a memento of happy times passed in her company. Others, who did not know Jane, bid strongly on material which was eclectic, fun, intriguing and stylish. Before the Griffiths Collection was sold, there was a traditional offering of silver, jewellery and watches from other sources and here there was much interest early on in a set of three Garrards Victorian silver chambersticks, London 1875. Estimated at £1,000/2,000 they sold for £2,300. In the jewellery section an opal and diamond set brooch designed as a cabochon brought a respectable £750 whilst a pair of art deco style ruby and diamond stud earrings proved the popularity of this style at the moment when they made an above estimate £1,500. There was much publicity surrounding two cultured pearl clasps from the collection of Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor. The clasps were attached to uniform cultured pearl necklaces and had first been offered at the sale of her belongings in Geneva in 1987. Here the first clasp brought £1,200 and the second £950.

Elsewhere in the jewellery section an 18 carat white gold and diamond set necklace with a central chevron panel sold for £1,800 and a lovely Georg Jensen carnival ring and necklace climbed to £1,900 (estimate £1,200/1,800) before it changed hands. Later, an 18 carat white gold solitaire diamond ring weighing in at 1.7 carats realized £2,200 and an amethyst set bishop’s ring £1,300. The Griffiths Collection was a near sell out with some immediately spectacular results. Three lots into the event, a Piero Fornasetti occasional table trounced an estimate of £200/300 to take £1,600. This was followed by a slew of strong three figure results including £640 for a Jacques Adnet toy soldier standard lamp, £520 for a Charles Eames aluminium group armchair and £850 for an etching by Wilhelmina BarnsGraham ‘Scorpio I’, 1996. Top lots here though were two Francis Davison collages titled ‘Two Circles in Red and White’ and ‘Green Brown Grey Rivets’ which sold for £2,900 and £3,300 respectively. Coming close to this result was a David Hockney framed etching titled ‘Sunflowers’, a signed edition from 1995 which brought a top estimate £2,000. 134

C ARRIAGE & PACKING

Whilst Halls Fine Art are not packers or shippers we are happy to liaise with your chosen carrier for removal of lots after sale. Please note, no lots shall be released to a carrier until payment has been received.

Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition.

Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.

Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.
