Made in Shropshire Coalport, Caughley & Coalbrookdale

mADE in ShropShirE

When the ‘Made in Shropshire’ theme was first devised by the team at Halls we already had our own expectations regarding the calibre of items we would be able to offer. What we did not anticipate, however, was the sheer volume of enquiries and amount of interest shown from day one from vendors and potential buyers alike. as such, this sale could have not been put together without the help of the people of Shropshire and beyond.

in turn, we hope that we have done Shropshire justice by presenting a small snapshot of our local history. The following section includes private collections of coalbrookdale iron and bronze work, caughley and coalport; alongside other pieces of local pottery history such as Maw & co and craven Dunnill; right through to Shropshire’s more modern day accomplishments such as the three original oil paintings by the local artist John alford.

thE CoAlport porCElAin FACtory

The coalport factory is one which is steeped in local history. after taking over the caughley porcelain factory in 1799, the company went on to make further purchases of other porcelain manufacturers in Wales. The mid-19th century even saw coalport gain a royal sense of acclaim, with a specially commissioned service intended as a gift from Queen victoria to nicholas Tsar ii. it is from this period and later that the majority of our items fall.

as with the other sections of this sale, a number of lots are part of a single owner collection which was cultivated over many years. Beyond the same factory name, it is hard to find any great deal of similarity between many of the lots. coalport is a diverse factory which seemed to play heavily on the concept of ‘variation of a theme’, and as a reflection of this each lot has something new to offer in terms of shape, pattern or form. This can be seen from the exquisitely painted pair of landscapes vases in lot 107 (estimated £150/£250), later employed on a smaller more trinket-like pair of fan-shaped dishes in lot 115 (estimated £40/£60). coalport also pushed design boundaries, as demonstrated by the bright Persian-design inspired decanter featured in lot 114 (estimated £300/£400).

The political and patriotic motivations by the coalport factory are also represented within the sale, beginning first with lots 126 and 131, a mug and plate commemorating the life and achievements of local Dawley hero captain Matthew Webb; the first recorded man to swim the English channel (estimates £100/£150 and £30/£50 respectively). This is followed by lot 132’s early coalport election jug (£50/£80), which is dated 1835 and bears the names of the twelve conservative candidates of the Shrewsbury election. coalport continued to produce these election mugs in favour of conservative candidates until they were no longer the majority.

‘thE CAughlEy porCElAin FACtory’

Following the great success of our sale of a Private collection of caughley porcelain back in april 2010, we are now pleased to be able to offer another single owner collection as part of our overall Made in Shropshire theme. consisting of 65 different lots which were obtained over a period of at least twenty years, the vendor demonstrates a particular fondness for certain areas of caughley production; take for example the twelve different coffee cups. Lot 160, for instance, includes an always popular ‘Toy’ or miniature example together with further Toy wares (combined estimate £150/£200). assembled under the influence of some of the big names of the caughley porcelain world at the time several pieces in the sale bear ex. collection labels for well known people such as J&S Wyatt, gittins and Bernard Watney.

in a testament to this, there are two rare examples in the sale that should pique people’s interest. Lot 148 is a spittoon or saffer pot in the ‘Three Flowers and Hips’ design, a pattern which one caughley book describes as being ‘very rare’ (estimate £300/£500). Later on in the sale, lot 173 is a pounce pot, transfer printer with floral sprigs (estimate £1500/£2000) which is a rare survivor of caughley porcelain and does not come up for auction very often. as such, whenever they do re-enter the market they are always a hard fought over success. For example, 2009 saw a very similar example in a London auction room realise an exceptional total of £5,280 including buyers’ premium.

Our recent results have proved that strong collecting interest for caughley exists both locally and abroad. The academic interest is particularly high, and even since our highly successful sale four years ago there have been new developments in the market. in particular, the publishing of what is now considered the definitive book of caughley Blue and White patterns by the caughley Society has helped to open up the market and make it more accessible. We hope that by offering this exciting collection of caughley we can continue this trend and bring new enthusiasts into the fold.

caughley Marks index Lot 136 A CAughlEy CoFFEE Cup, circa 1778-88, transfer printed in blue with two opposing oval car touches in the Fruit and Wreath pattern, alongside a secondary print of flowers, foliage and fruit, set below a floral wreath border, underglaze blue c mark, 7cm high

See geoffrey godden, ‘caughley & Worcester Porcelains 1775-1800’ (antique collectors’ club: Suffolk, 1981) hereafter referred to as c&WP, p.42, which shows a reproduction of the engraved copper plate design of this pattern, and where the author notes, ‘The same standard design was more often applied to Worcester than caughley porcelain ... it is applied in the main to teawares but can also occur on other objects, such as patty, or tart pans’. £80 - £120

Provenance: Ex. Basford collection paper label, no.138.

See The caughley Society, ‘caughley - Blue and White Patterns’, The caughley Society, 2012 (hereafter referred to a c, B&W’, page 188189 for a discussion of this pattern and a similar dish). £50 - £80

See c&WP, p.18 where the author notes that, ‘The so called ‘Temple’ pattern is found almost exclusively on teawares, porcelains bearing this printed subject normally bear the printed ‘S’ mark, sometimes with a workman’s ‘x’ or ‘o’ added. a close copy of this design is found on Worcester porcelains but here it appears to be hand painted, not printed.’ £40 - £60 35

Lot 138 Lot 138 A CAughlEy tEA bowl, circa 1775-82, painted in blue with the Waiting chinaman pattern, contained within a double line circle, surrounded by a design of supplementary flowers, unmarked, 8cm diameter Like a number of other caughley patterns, an identical version of this design was used at the Worcester porcelain factory until 1775, the year it began at caughley. This offers up the interesting prospect that the painter responsible left Worcester for some reason and moved on to complete work at caughley. £50 - £80

Lot 142 A CAughlEy CoFFEE Cup, and saucer painted in blue with the chantilly Sprigs pattern, the cup of plain form, with circular section chinese-style stand off handle, disguised foot rim, with associated blue line borders, cup 6.5cm high, saucer 13cm diameter, unmarked (2) Saucer bears Ex. J&S Wyatt collection paper label. See cB&W, page 73 for a discussion of the pattern where it is noted that at this stage caughley was copying the French underglaze blue painted patterns originally developed at chantilly in around 1770. The design soon spread across Europe and was widely copied on both porcelain and earthenware. caughley used it on its shapes which were predominantly in a continental style. £120 - £150

Lot 139 Lot 139 A CAughlEy SAuCEr DiSh, possibly a bread and butter plate, circa 1776-95, transfer printer in the Bell Toy pattern below a single blue line rim, unmarked, 22cm diameter (firing flaws and chip to rim) Ex J&S Wyatt collection paper label.

See c&WP, page 25 for a discussion on this design where the following is surmised, ‘This design was one of the earliest employed on caughley porcelain, for it is found on the mug dated 1776 in the victoria and albert Museum. The subject was re-used by the coalpor t par tners on their post-1799 hard paste porcelain. The original name of this pattern was probably ‘image’, for which there are a number of references to in the chamberlain/caughley accounts’. £100 - £150

Lot 141 Lot 141 A CAughlEy wEt muStArD pot AnD CovEr, circa 1780-85, transfer printed in blue with the Three Flowers and Butterfly pattern, the cover with an open flower finial, an ornate moulded handle, below associated double blue line to shoulder,, printed c with serif mark, 10cm high

Lot 142 36

Lot 147 Lot 147 A CAughlEy CoFFEE pot, lacking a cover, circa 1782-92, half-fluted form body transfer printer in underglaze blue with the Pagoda pattern, with moulded spout and chinese style stand off handle and kick terminal, unmarked, 20.5cm high (transfer pattern to one side has slipped)

Lot 145 Lot 145 A CAughlEy SAuCEboAt, circa 1785, printed in underglaze blue with the Bandstand pattern, of linefold moulded form with a raised strap handle, with scrolled suppor t and projecting thumb grip, unmarked 10cm high (chipped spout)

This pattern is an almost direct copy of the chinese pattern most commonly found on nankin porcelains. Widely reproduced throughout the nineteenth century by many English ear thenware and porcelain factories, it is sometimes referred to as the ‘Broseley’ pattern in homage to its use at caughley, Broseley being the nearest town. £80 - £120

See c&WP, plate 173 for a similar example alongside two unglazed factory wasters, see also cBE catalogue no. 354 for a similar example, and Panes, nicholas British Porcelain Sauceboats of the 18th century, gomer Press, 2009, page 248, figure 405 for a colour illustration of a similar piece. Pane suggests that contemporary creamware may have been the influence for this design. £100 - £200

Lot 148 Lot 148 A CAughlEy Spittoon or SAFFEr pot, circa 1775-78 of globular form with wide rim, printed in underglaze blue in the Three Flowers and Hips pattern, S mark, 11.5cm high

See c B&W, page 119 where this pattern is noted as being ‘rare’, having only been previously recorded on caughley sucriers. See also c&WP page 104, for a discussion of the purpose of these vessels and their possible use as saffron bulb holders. godden suggests that this could be the derivation of the term ‘safflower’, which, when abbreviated could give the name ‘saffer’ as found in the chamberlain-Turner accounts. remnants of roderick Jellicoe paper label to base. £300 - £500

Ex J&S Wyatt collection paper label, no.16

The entirety of chapter 3 of c&WP is devoted to this well-known pattern. Originally called ‘Pleasure Boat’ in the eighteenth century, the pattern is found on a wide range of caughley porcelain. This mask head jug in this pattern was originally known as ‘Dutch Jug’, and the chamberlain accounts list four different sizes with this pattern. £150 - £200 37

See also Halls sale on 28th april, 2010, lot 73, for an almost identical example which sold for £1000. £500 - £800

CoAlbrookDAlE

From a two-seater bench in the nasturtium pattern (estimate £400/£600), to a cast iron circular plaque featuring the bust of abraham Darby, the founder of the factory, this section showcases some of the best 19th and 20th century pieces the coalbrookdale factory has to offer.

an important segment of the sale is formed around one family’s contribution to the coalbrookdale ironworks and Foundry at ironbridge. These pieces were originally owned by the present vendor’s grandfather, Burton Joseph aldred. The aldred family were noted finishers of the decorative wares produced at coalbrookdale for centuries. The vendor remembers his grandfather proudly displaying the collection within his home in Madeley to show his family’s expertise.

aldred was born only a road’s width from the coalbrookdale works and the step to working there seemed a natural one, and he was soon trained by older members of his family at coalbrookdale. after a few years of service in the First World War with the royal army Medical corps, he resumed his job at the ironworks until the decorative pieces were no longer made. He then moved to the offices and worked there until he reached his retirement.

The pieces from his collection range from a set of three cast iron plaques, each based on Henry Wadswor th Longfellow’s poem ‘The village Blacksmith’, which are sold separately (estimates £100/£150 each). These plaques were originally intended to form part of a cabinet grate, and demonstrate how the pieces produced at coalbrookdale can serve to be both functional and decorative. Within this section, even one of the more modern pieces included in this sale offers a 21st century take on a 19th century design, with lot 233, a contemporary version of a panel from this poem having a noticeable silvered finish and different quality to the casting (estimate £200/£300). a number of the lots (238, 241 and 242) are the pierced fruit dishes which are well known to coalbrookdale collectors and were originally designed by the german architect Karl Fredrich Schinkel. Lot 232, however, is the product of experimentation by aldred - consisting of a comport dish (estimated at £100/£150) which is designed using the pierced fruit dish as a bowl, the stem formed by a figure originally intended to form part of a pair of candlesticks.

Poem: Under a spreading chestnut-tree The village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; and the muscles of his brawny arms are strong as iron bands. His hair is crisp, and black, and long, His face is like the tan; His brow is wet with honest sweat, He earns whate’er he can, and looks the whole world in the face, For he owes not any man. Week in, week out, from morn till night, You can hear his bellows blow; You can hear him swing his heavy sledge, With measured beat and slow, Like a sexton ringing the village bell, When the evening sun is low. and children coming home from school Look in at the open door; They love to see the flaming forge, and hear the bellows roar, and catch the burning sparks that fly Like chaff from a threshingfloor. He goes on Sunday to the church, and sits among his boys; He hears the parson pray and preach, He hears his daughter’s voice, Singing in the village choir, and it makes his heart rejoice. it sounds to him like her mother’s voice, Singing in Paradise! He needs must think of her once more, How in the grave she lies; and with his hard, rough hand he wipes a tear out of his eyes. Toiling,—rejoicing,—sorrowing, Onward through life he goes; Each morning sees some task begin, Each evening sees it close Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night’s repose. Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend, For the lesson thou hast taught! Thus at the flaming forge of life Our for tunes must be wrought; Thus on its sounding anvil shaped Each burning deed and thought.

On advice from his doctor he wintered in the dry climate of Egypt and there became entranced by the country and its history. That same year he joined the Egypt Exploration Society and quickly became involved in its activities. By 1888 Macgregor was assisting Edouard naville the fund excavator with a dig in Bubastis where he also took on the roll of photographer. in 1902 Macgregor began to sponsor excavations alongside fellow benefactors and museums beginning with abydos then being excavated under the direction of Flinders Petrie on behalf of University college London. Macgregor’s involvement as benefactor entitled him to a share of the antiquities found. already a collector of Turner paintings from his visit to Egypt he turned his attention to acquiring Egyptian antiquities. in 1921 Macgregor decided to sell his collection to the firm of Messrs Spink & Son in the summer of the following year the collection was offered in 1800 lots through Sotheby’s. a total of over 8000 pieces were sold over a period of nine days and it was hailed as a remarkable collection of Egyptian antiquities unparalleled by any other private collection in England, Europe or america. SALE REPORT – 10TH SEPTEMBER 2014 it is not often nowadays that house contents or even part house contents enter the salerooms since most contents dispersals happened in the immediate post war years and are almost a thing of the past. happily, halls was favoured with instructions this sale to sell the part contents of the manor, Sheriffhales, which made up a good percentage of the 10th September catalogue, the first of its kind to specialise in oak and vernacular furniture and clocks.

the day started with a comprehensive offering of nearly 50 lots of clocks with a george i and later ebonised bracket clock proving the most popular. this example came with a later fusee movement signed Saml Delafosse and a matt dial signed william Sharpe, london and carried hopes of £1,500/2,500. After fierce telephone bidding, it was sold to a warwickshire buyer for £4,200. A clock of similar vintage, this time a late 17th century walnut and marquetry eight day longcase clock with a profusely carved case, was also much admired and sensibly estimated at £2,000/4,000. it sold to a Cheshire buyer for £3,200. the trade in 18th and 19th century country oak longcase clocks is not exactly on fire but the examples offered here largely sold with prices falling in the £200/500 range, some distance from the heady heights of ten or fifteen years ago. in the works of Art and mechanical music section, a good 19th century figured walnut cased table polyphon, circa 1892, with 33 accompanying discs changed hands for £1,300 (estimate £800/1,200) whilst a symphonium disc musical box brought a low estimate £800 selling to a local buyer bidding on the internet.

the first lot from the manor, Sheriffhales was a wonderful mid-17th century joined oak coffer featuring a profusely carved seven panel front and lozenge carved frieze. it sold above estimate for £1,550 to a north Shropshire buyer bidding on the telephone.this was followed next lot by a late 17th century joined oak box seat settle of mid-welsh origins which had been estimated at £1,500/2,500. this attractively patinated example sold to a north wales buyer for £3,100.

the manor continued to offer up good pieces of furniture and works of art including a george iii oak high dresser at £3,000, a 19th century French oak gothic revival bed at £700, a Charles ii joined oak coffer at £950 and another mid-17th century joined oak coffer at £700.

Elsewhere in the sale, there was a great deal of interest in a george iii oak montgomeryshire pattern high dresser with a pot board base which sold to the local trade for £2,300 and also for a george iii oak clothes press of small proportions. this was from the Carmarthenshire/Cardiganshire area and dated to 1770 and had featured in richard bebb’s book welsh Furniture 1250-1950, A Cultural history of Craftsmanship and Design. it sold to a Shropshire buyer for £2,000. 107
