CA MAU

In 1725 a Chinese junk filed with export porcelain and sailing ninety miles south of Canton on its way to the Malaysian archipelago sank after apparently suffering an intense fire on-board which was so hot that it fused together some pieces of its precious cargo. This fire, burning at 1400 degrees Fahrenheit may have started in the kitchen as cast iron cooking pots were found melted together and it may have burned long enough for the crew to escape along with the ship’s seals. The junk lay for over two hundred and eighty years without being discovered or disturbed until, in 1998, two Vietnamese fishermen snagged their nets on a quantity of Chinese porcelain and began to haul it from the deep. Before the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture and Information stepped in, the fishermen had managed to bring to the surface over thirty thousand pieces of porcelain. In 2005 the Vietnamese Government decided to sell a proportion of the overall 130,000 pieces of porcelain that had been salvaged and sent 76,000 to auction with Sotheby’s in Amsterdam in January 2007. The shipwreck, the Ca Mau, finally unloaded its cargo to an eager market over three days in the Netherlands and the ring of commerce between East and West for this beautiful porcelain was sealed once more after a two century gap.

Shipwreck porcelains are a fascinating subject and shed much light on history, porcelain, human and marine archaeology and commerce. They represent in their purest form, a time capsule, sealing in the fashion of the day represented by the most popular shapes and designs. After the discovery of the Nanking Cargo by Michael Hatcher in the 1980’s there have been many shipwreck porcelain sales at auction, including Vung Tau, Tek Sing, Diana and of course, Ca Mau. The number of pieces offered have been breathtaking, usually 100,000 pieces or more per sale and reflect the size of these cargoes in their day and the demand for such wares throughout South East Asia and Europe. A great deal of the cargo from the Ca Mau consisted of tea bowls, saucers and saucer dishes for the mass market. The majority were painted in cobalt blue against a white porcelain ground. Such tea bowls and saucers are ideal for collectors, being easy to display, relatively inexpensive and often displaying a myriad of different patterns.

In this sale Halls Fine Art offer dealers, connoisseurs and academics alike the opportunity once more to acquire a selection of these beautiful and delicate porcelain pieces being sold here by a Staffordshire vendor.

Asian Art 5th November – Sale Report Building on the strong foundations laid by the inaugural sale in May, Halls Asian Art sale on November 5th proved that the appetite for Middle Eastern, Indian, Japanese and particularly Chinese art is still buoyant and continuing to grow. The consistently high level of enquiries from overseas buyers together with a strong domestic client base made for a busy run up to sale day, with interest further compounded by the exhibition of select lots from the sale at an exclusive gallery in St James, London, in conjunction with Asian Art Week 2014 in the capital. Whereas Chinese ceramics had dominated the previous sale, newly emerging trends in the Asian Art market-place saw Chinese furniture rise to the fore, with an early 20th century Chinese hardwood full height corner cabinet with carved and pierced detailing selling for £3,400 and a Chinese carved hardwood chair with pierced back, also 20th century, selling for £1,700; both to a determined telephone bidder. The items were from a large and varied private collection being sold on behalf of a local client, and also included a Chinese mutton fat jade carving of two cats, which sold for an above estimate £1,250, and a further Chinese mutton fat jade carving of a cat lying on a leaf which sold for £700. This collection was also the source of an unusual large Chinese bronze mirror; modelled in archaic style and complete with hardwood floor stand, it surpassed its estimate in style, realising a hammer price of £6,500 after a lengthy battle between telephone and internet bidders. Ivory has never been far from the headlines in the last few months, but historically worked pieces are stilled prized by collectors and the market remains strong for the right examples. This was underlined by the sale’s ivory section achieving a 100% sold rate, with multiple Japanese ivory pieces exceeding their estimates by considerable amounts. A Japanese carved ivory sectional okimono of a drunken samurai dating from the late Meiji period realised £1,550 from an estimate of £800-1,200, while a Japanese carved ivory sectional okimono of a fisherman, also late Meiji period, sold for a hammer price of £800 from an estimate of £300-500. A Chinese embroidered wall hanging, with silk and gilt thread detailing selling for £,1000 and a 19th century Chinese Canton export fan by J. Duvelleroy realising £1,250 also showed the diversity in the interests of bidders on the day. Although the Chinese market has dominated Asian Art sales in recent years, the developing Indian economy has led to a surge of interest in historic works of art from the subcontinent, reflected in the sale of an Anglo-Indian carved sandal wood scroll case, dated from the second half of the 19th century selling for £750 to an internet bidder against bids in the room.

Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition.

Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested.
