Lot 1 A PAIR OF STAFFORDSHIRE SPILL VASE GROUPS, early 19th century, modelled as goats recumbent before a tree trunk overlooked by birds, unmarked (restored), 15cm high £150 - £250

Lot 4 A JAMES NEALE & CO PEARLWARE MODEL OF APOLLO, impressed title in upper case and neale & Co, 15.5cm high £80 - £120

Lot 2 Lot 2 A PEARLWARE STAFFORDSHIRE BOCAGE GROUP, ‘The Jolly Traveller’, circa 1820-30, the man leading his mule laden with produce, a dog at his feet, titled yellow plaque to the naturalistic green base, 17.5cm high (bocage partly missing)

Lot 5 Lot 5 A RARE WOOD AND CALDWELL PEARLWARE GROUP OF HERCULES WRESTLING A BULL, circa 1815, unmarked, 14cm high (restored) This model is noted as being supplied by Wood and Caldwell in the 25th november, 1815 ledger of a London Retailer named Wyllie. This classical group depicts Hercules, the personification of courage who wrestled Achelous, who assumed the form of a bull, for the love of Deianeira. £300 - £400

For a similar model in see Myrna Schkolne, People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures (2006), p. 66, and Bonhams Knightsbridge sale, lot 67, 28th october 2003 £250 - £450 Lot 3 THREE WILSON/NEALE & CO PEARLWARE MODELS FROM THE FOUR SEASONS SERIES, (Winter, Summer and Spring), circa 1795-1816, Winter depicted as a young boy huddled in a brown cloak, impressed title and crown mark, (chipped base), Summer as a boy holding corn, and Spring as a young girl seated holding her floral attributes, impressed title, each 13.5cm high (3)

Now accepting entries for our 6th July Antique, Design and Contemporary Auction.

Around 1790 James neale withdrew from the business in favour of his partner Robert Wilson. The crowned g mark seems to date from this time. In some cases the crowned g mark occurs alongside neale and Co marks, however. Robert Wilson died in 1801 and the factory continued production till 1820. The earlier work of the Wilson factory continued neale and Co models and £400 - £600 traditions.

LINLEY HALL Linley Hall, an important estate in Bishops’ Castle has its foundations in the 17th century but was most recently modernised by the late Sir Robert Jasper More and his wife, Clare Hope-Edwardes during the 1950’s. As such the items primarily represent the coming together of these two important Shropshire families. Included in the sale are a number of political related ceramics and glassware pertaining the More family’s long line of political association and input within the county of Shropshire and beyond. Historic connections with this estate go even further through marriage and inheritance, with ‘Mad Jack’ Mytton’s loving cups also included and which were most likely acquired when the family assumed either the Mytton estates of Cleobury North and Shipton. Literature: Provenance: The Peter Bradshaw Collection, illustrated by Bradshaw, 18th Century English Porcelain Figures (1981), colour plate B. Bradshaw suggests that the female model is after a Meissen original of Amorata from the Commedia dell’Arte series, as she would most likely have originally held a mask and fan. other Meissen figures may have provided the inspiration, including a model known as Isabella. Most likely this is an original creation by Joseph Willems and it is worth noting similarities to the Chelsea figure sometimes called Isabella, which is usually attributed to Willems, see Margaret Legge, Flowers and Fables (1984), p 40, fig l59) note: Provenance: Linley Hall, Shropshire

After his national Service in the navy he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art and travelled on a bursary to Scandinavia. on graduation he joined Stevens and Williams as a designer, moving to Stourbridge College as a tutor in the early 1960s. There was still a strict demarcation between design and glassmaking, and george did not start to make his own glass until the small furnaces, developed by Harvey Littleton and Dominic Labino in Wisconsin were brought to Britain by San Herman. george soon transferred his energies to mastering the craft of freeblown glass, working on his own without the benefit of the traditional team. He also worked as a designer for Holmegaards glassveark in Denmark and for Hadelands glassveark in norway. This meant that he had to develop unique ways of carrying out procedures, like casting on a foot to a wine glass. george’s forms were, like him, honest, unpretentious, and quintessentially English. He, unlike many others, chose to devote his creative energies on the production of decorative domestic items, working at his studio in Bewdley, and after leaving teaching in the mid eighties, at his 15th century timber frame cottage in Herefordshire. Although his formal repertoire was, on the face of it, traditional, he imbued his forms, whether vases, goblets or bottles with distinctive character, both in shape and decoration. He specialised in applied, linear decoration which was hooked into festoons round the forms, and added ‘splashed’ applications of coloured shards onto clear and coloured backgrounds. His choice of the traditional was expressive of george as a person; he was, for example an expert with the English Long Bow, which he would make from scratch. His exact copies of Medieval glasses were much in demand from collectors and Museums. £100 - £150

28th October 2015 – Sale Report It is difficult, looking at the top ten results for the 28th October auction, to discern any particular pattern in the modern market’s desires. There were four figure results for French bronzes, English tiles, 18th century porcelain, French furniture, Welsh furniture and a rocking horse! This diversity of interest and value is good for vendors and points to a broad collecting base for the very best articles in even the narrowest of fields. The top price of the day arrived early on following the considerable interest in a set of Walter Crane designed Pilkington’s tiles. This set of six rare relief pressed tiles titled ‘Flora’s Train’ and dated to 1900 showed six stylised Art Nouveau women comprising Poppy, Cornflower, Columbine, Daffodil, Bluebell and Anemone. Consigned during one of Halls’ regular Monday morning free valuation events, the tiles were estimated at £2,000/3,000, an estimate reflecting their rarity and the fact that there is a similar set in the Victoria and Albert Museum. After a fierce bidding battle between a collector on the telephone and the internet, the latter won out and the tiles sold for £5,000 to a Dutch buyer. The theme of young Art Nouveau maidens continued when a French bronze entitled ‘Marguerite was offered. Cast after a model by Eugene- Antoine Aizelin, this bronze showed a demure young lady in a long dress and headscarf standing holding a book. It sold for £2,800 to a buyer from Dolgellau. Caughley, Shropshire’s 18th century porcelain factory, has a dedicated local following and when rare pieces surface, they are keenly contested. Here a Caughley blue and white pounce pot dated to 1780-90 and of bobbin form confounded hopes of £1,500/2,500 to sell for £2,800 to a South Shropshire buyer. Blue and white is also popular in pottery if the decoration is rare and the collectors are in the room. On this occasion three English blue and white meat plates transfer printed after Boultbee with the Durham Ox and a castle after an aquatint by Merigot attracted a hatful of pre-sale condition reports. On the day the estimate of £200/400 was soon eclipsed with lively internet bidding and room bidding. The hammer finally came down at £2,800 to a Scottish buyer. A consignment of French furniture from a Cardiff vendor proved very popular and reflected the present interest in China for inlaid and ormolu mounted pieces. Here a pair of French Louis XV ebonised and brass inlaid Boulle card tables sold for £2,400 to a London Chinese buyer, despite requiring restoration. A few lots later a 19th century Boulle style inlaid bureau plat sold to the same buyer for £2,200 well above the estimate of £700/1000. A brass Boulle pedestal cabinet also doubled its estimate when it sold to the Brighton trade for £1,450. Other notable results included £2,600 for an early 20th century dapple grey rocking horse on trestle base, £1,800 for an 18th North Wales oak high dresser and £1,000 for a Persian Isfahan silk rug.
