126 A COLLECTION OF CLASSICAL REVIVAL POTTERY Following the Neo-Classical pottery of the early 19th Century, particularly by Josiah Wedgwood, Stoke-on-Trent caught the fever again in the late 1850s with a flurry of pottery designs, many direct copies of shapes and scenes from recent excavations in the Mediterranean area and acquired by the British Museum. Samuel Alcock and the Hill Pottery were the most prolific exponants, along with Pratt, Mayer, Battams (decorators), William Brownfield and Brown, Westhead, Moore and Co - et al. Stoke marketed this distinct group of pots in its own idiosyncratic way, often resplendant in the striking orange ground appreciated by decorators ever since.
