PAC INFORMATION ADOPTION is about giving children the best chance of family life. It is a ‘new start’ for children who, through no fault of their own, are unable to grow up within their birth families. It is a life-long journey for all involved. Whilst the media tells us of many celebrity or Hollywood adoptions from abroad, it is little known that 90% of adoptions in England today are of children born within the UK. These children have been taken into care as a result of neglect, abuse or other family dysfunction. Most of us take a stable early childhood for granted and have enough emotional health to weather difficult times later on in our lives. Adopted children who have not received ‘good enough’ parenting in their early years are uniquely vulnerable: their emotional foundation is unstable and this affects their subsequent emotional and relational development. By the time they are adopted they may have been moved between several different foster families, even 12 or more, and their average age will be around four. As a result, many of these children will have suffered substantial trauma and losses, which lead to negative behaviour patterns. These are often so ingrained that they disrupt the child’s integration into their adoptive family, and their day-to-day functioning in school and the community. These are the families we work with at PAC. Sometimes we are asked to help children adopted internationally. They are likely to have had some traumatic experiences too. Many will have lived in institutions with a lack of physical and, more importantly, emotional, care; all will have been separated from their ethnic or cultural origins. Adults adopted as children may also come to us with an array of issues relating to their adoption and possibly the desire to make contact with birth parents and relatives. We are frequently contacted by older people who, in spite of successful careers and families of their own, sense there is something unresolved. PAC also supports birth parents, particularly birth mothers, who often suffer deep and ongoing feelings of loss and grief after their child is removed. Our birth parent support service includes counselling sessions for mothers inside HMP Holloway. PAC aims to be a centre of excellence in the provision of therapeutic services to adopted adults, adopted children and their families, and counselling to birth parents. We are here to help them at any stage on their lifelong journey.
There is limited statutory requirement for specialist adoption support, so PAC relies on local authority (renewable) subscriptions, fee income, grants and other donations to continue its work. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
“We wouldn’t still be together as a family if it wasn’t for PAC.”
(adopted mother of 2 teenage children)
“It has saved my life, as I could not get help anywhere else. I was so depressed and bogged down with terrific emotional sadness and pain. I could not have gone on for much longer. At last I know why I have (birth parent) these feelings and cope better.” “[I found it helpful] having counselling that understood just how big and overpowering the adoption process is and how something of which I have no memory has become my biggest memory.” (adult adopted as child)

PATRON’S INTRODUCTION
I am thrilled to have been invited to introduce this wonderful Gala Dinner and Auction made possible through the generous contributions of an amazing collection of artists and world-renowned chefs, a number of whom have personal links with adoption. PAC has been making a difference to the lives of adopted children for the past 25 years. But it doesn’t stop there. It works with their adoptive parents, their birth parents and their schools, offering holistic and lifelong support along the adoption journey. It improves lives. YOU can help too. Your generosity this evening will be invaluable – every pound you give will enable PAC to continue to develop its valuable work for the next 25 years! Adoption is about the future – together let’s make the future even better for more vulnerable children and their families.

MESSAGES FROM DONATING ARTISTS A Message from Tony Heywood PAC was incredibly proficient and caring, enabling me to find a direction and a way out of what I now understand to be a common source of emotional trouble that many adopted children and adults suffer from. The notion of ‘choice’ and ‘to be chosen’ is also a complex one for me, as an adopted person. This is something I have wrestled with and I feel that the work I have donated enititled ‘Rest’ hints at this dilemma. My adoption counseling with Maggie was probably one of the most profound and moving experiences that I have had. During our sessions we often discussed the valuable role that art has for me in articulating some of my insecurities. I wish you all the success in this fundraising event and feel privileged to be participating in it.
A Message from Claerwyn James My daughter first came to live with us when she was eighteen months old, and we were lucky enough to be allowed to adopt her when she was three. When we were fostering her we had a lot of support from social services, who were really helpful. But there seemed to be a lot less guidance after the adoption, just as our daughter was beginning to ask questions. I think there’s a common assumption that the moment of adoption is the happy ending to a story. But actually a lot of adoptions fail. Many children have suffered serious neglect, or worse, in their previous homes, and are scarred by that. And even when they are adopted very young there are issues of identity and guilt that can surface years later, if they aren’t handled sensitively from the start. Advice from someone who understands the territory and can recognise and interpret behaviour that might otherwise seem mysterious and upsetting is absolutely invaluable. As time goes on, I know that my daughter will continue to need help to make sense of her story and we’ll need advice about how to support her with that. The whole adoption scenario is much more complicated that most people realise. We’ve had a very happy experience, and we have an adorable daughter: but the journey has been more hazardous and the pitfalls more numerous than we could have expected. It’s a relief to know that there are charities like PAC able to give constant and continuous support to families like ours.
A Message from Russell Young I am adopted and so is my brother and I also have two adopted children, aged 3 and 6years. This doesn’t make me an expert on adoption, but it has played a huge part in my life and I feel it is a wonderful thing. I am involved with many children’s charities and I know there are issues and questions that have gone through my mind over the years, that’s why charities such as PAC are so important. Pre and post support is key and allows you to be truthful about your fears and expectations, and also helps with the surprises along the way. Needing help doesn’t stop when people adopt children and being adopted is very different – it can make you feel very special but also make you feel isolated. I believe that a child’s early years are very important, and perhaps more so if you are adopted, therefore positive charities that make a difference and have a vision are essential – they put a human face on a legal process.

Lot 4. Tony Heywood Rest, 2007. Mixed media. 36 x 17cm. Real bird’s nest and Swarovski crystal egg with taxidermy bird and antique bell jar.
Kindly donated by the artist. The artwork was originally created for the Fine Art Society exhibition ‘Unfinished Symphony’ in 2007. The artwork is a hand blown quail’s egg containing the seeds of ten of the British Isles’ extinct wild flower species. The egg shell is encrusted and beautifully decorated with Swarovski crystal. It sits in a real bird’s nest and is presented inside a Victorian glass bell jar. The artist writes; “Any future custodian has a choice either to view and experience the beauty and the aesthetic surface of the work or to destroy the egg to realize and give life to the internal contents. I felt one of the key driving concepts ‘ destructive creation or creative destructive’, inherent in the work reflected a similar emotional and physiological state that lead me to go and seek help from the Post-Adoption Centre”. Lot 4.

Lot 5. Russell Young. Jackie Kennedy, 2010. Acrylic paint, enamel and diamond dust screen print on linen 86 x 108cm. Framed.
Kindly Donated by the artist. Russell started his career as a photographer, shooting mostly musicians like Morrissey, Bjork, Springsteen, Dylan, REM, New Order, The Smiths, Diana Ross, Paul Newman and resultantly many other celebrities. The next natural step was directing music videos; Russell directed a hundred music videos during the heyday of MTV. Ten years into his career, Russell started painting, but his work remained private. Until 2003, when Young showed his first series of paintings called Pig Portraits, this first show sold out. Young has risen to be an internationally acclaimed pop artist, creating larger than life silkscreen paintings of images from history and pop culture.
“My art is a sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. These would be my heroes that are missing from Art History.” Russell Young has risen to become one of the most collected and sought after artists of our time. Celebrities and the most discriminating collectors like Abby Rosen, the Getty’s, Elizabeth Taylor, David Hockney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, David Bowie and President Barack Obama have added Russell’s works to their collections. Lot 5.

Lot 6. Estelle Thompson Switchit 2010 oil and metal pigment in wax on panel 30 x 42cm. Unframed
Kindly Donated by the artist. Estelle Thompson is one of Britain’s most highly regarded contemporary abstract artists. She is deeply influenced by the geometric constructions of Suprematism and the artworks of artists such as Malevich. Her compositions explore the way in which the viewer can interact with a non-representational art work and they ask questions that have often been central to that of making art. Such as those concerning the composition and process of execution, the exploration of colour, the pictorial space and the problems of abstraction. Estelle’s geometric forms continuously evolve as she reworks the composition and the colour to attain something balanced and harmonious both in form and colour but at the same time leaving a sense of intrigue and mystery. Her use of colour and also that of a silver pigment, as in this work, mean that our perception and appreciation of her works can be changed by the quality of light and the space in which it is hung. Estelle is represented by Purdy Hicks Gallery, London she has had several Solo Exhibitions. She is also a lecturer at the Slade School of Fine Art where her pupils have included both Claerwen James and Will Stein who have both also contributed to the PAC Auction. Her works can be found in several private and public collections including New York Public Library, The Arts Council of Great Britain, The British Council and The British Museum Est. £1,000 - £1,500

Kindly donated by Lisson Gallery Julian Opie is one of the most significant artists alive today. His cover design for Blur; The Best of became iconic both of his style and also of modern art at the turn of the century. Opie attempts to investigate the idea of representation in a very distinctive formal style which aims to address the way we interpret what we see. He draws inspiration for his works through advertising, classical portraiture, Japanese art and technology. His ‘Pop Art’ style is not only clear in his subject but in his varied use of media including computers and other technologies which make his art both stand out and so iconic in today’s market. Julian Opie lives and works in London. He is a former trustee of the Tate Gallery and is represented by Lisson Gallery. The Gallery Staff 1 is from one of Opie’s most recent series of works. It is one of five artist’s proof prints from an edition of twenty. Est. £1,800 - £2,000

Lot 8. Dan Baldwin. Cyclone. 2011 Silkscreen Print (Edition of 75), embossed with diamond dust and gold leaf. Artists Proof 2/8. 102 x 99 cm. Framed.
Kindly donated by the artist. Cyclone signed limited edition silkscreen print with embossing, gold leaf, diamond dust and collaged elements by reowned British contemporary artist Dan Baldwin.
Cyclone is a signature piece by Dan Baldwin featuring the themes and imagery for which this young British artist has become renowned. Baldwin states that his work is ‘about the fine line between the sinister and the beautiful’ it as at once joyful and profound. The universal themes that he tackles in cyclone include love and death, the brutality and beauty of nature and decay, religion and liberty. Found images and objects are combined with swathes of colour, graffiti-like markings, diagrams and drawings (reflecting Baldwin’s training as an illustrator) creating a melee of colour, movement and visual diversity against a black backdrop. This powerful image is centred around a golden knife, which sports a single drop of scarlet blood; representative of violence and passion. Overall Cyclone is a memento mori; a reminder of the brevity and ephemeral nature of life, as delicate as a butterfly or bird’s wing. Dan has exhibited in Basel, Miami, L.A, Tokyo, San Francisco, London and New York. Est. £800 - £1,200

Lot 8.
29
Lot 9. Gordon Cheung. Tulip, 2010. Stock listings newspaper with acrylic on canvas. 51 x 41.5cm. Unframed.
Kindly donated by the artist. Gordon Cheung graduated from the Royal College of Arts in 2001 and currently lives and works in London. The city is the inspiration for his works which capture the modern air of a civilization caught up in global Economic Crisis. Gordon uses bright colours and modern mediums such as FT Newspapers, Acrylics and Spray Paint in his art which aim to act, he says as, “metaphors for the loss of the utopian vision for the future” but yet at the same time “offering a glimmer of hope”. ‘Tulip’ is a work from his series of paintings of Still Lifes with tulips. The work questions what we value in today’s society including art itself. It contrasts stock listings from newspapers against an acrylic tulip, thus referencing the tulipomania of the 17th Century and how that is not dissimilar to the events of the present day. Est. £1,500 – £2,000

Lot 9.

Lot 10. Haroon Mirza Schematic for ‘Sick’, 2011. Work on paper. 21 x 29.7cm. Framed.
Kindly donated by the artist and Lisson Gallery. This accolade follows his success earlier this year in winning the Northern Art Prize and inclusion in the British Art Show 7, curated by Lisa LeFeuvre and Tom Morton Haroon Mirza's work attempts to connect the visual and acoustic as a singular aesthetic. The work Sick, that this drawing resulted in, is an installation which complicates our understanding of sound, noise and music, and how this is interwoven with how we see, understand and value objects. Est. £2,000 - £3,000

Lot 10.

Lot 11. Claerwen James. Girl 2, Red, White, 2010. Monotype. 91.5 x 68cm. Framed.
Kindly donated by the artist. Claerwen’s simplistic approach give her sitters a transient nature yet her reductive style and attention to the eyes give a certain sense of intensity and solidity. As such this instils the idea that these beautiful charachters are truly a part of this world we live in yet at the same time like us are transitory. After graduating from the Slade School of Fine Art with a first class degree and also winning the Melvill Nettleship Prize for figure composition she has had two solo shows at Flowers Gallery in 2006 and 2008. In the past she has been commissioned to paint portraits of Cate Blanchett’s children and also Sebastian Faulks’. Est. £1,500 – £1,800

SILENT AUCTION
Lot 13. Norman Ackroyd CBE. St.Kilda-Boreray, Rain. 2010. Etching. 16.5 x 27.5cm. Framed.
Kindly donated by the artist.
Norman Ackroyd’s etchings evoke the sublime raw nature of the British landscape, and their monochromatic execution gives them an elemental feel as well as a sense of timelessness. It is a testament to his ability that even without the use of colour he has been compared to the great JMW Turner. His works have a sort of pathetic fallacy in his ability to capture the emotional charge of a very British landscape and its weather that the viewer can immediately apprehend. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Art in 1988 and appointed Professor of Etching, University of the Arts, in 1994. He was elected Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 2000, and in 2007 was made CBE for services to Engraving and Printing. Ackroyd’s work can be found in several British and American galleries, and in the collections of major museums including the Tate, the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington. He has been featured in several television programs, including BBC documentaries in 1980 and 2006. Starting Price: £400

Lot 14. Sandra Shashou. The Eye Portraits. Hand printed Silk Screen on Mirror. 40 x 40cm.
Kindly donated by the artist.
A recent development in Shashou’s work represents her continuous passion for portraiture. In the Eye Portraits she gradually reduces attention to the face as a whole, concentrating solely on the subject’s eye, zooming in with the camera catching every detail. Minimalist portraits, the unique eye alone represents the person. Shashou has been inspired by recent technological developments in digital security known as Iris, in which the pattern of the muscular diaphragm surrounding the pupil, different in every individual, is recorded as a bar code for the person it represents. Moving away from paint, she has experimented with hand printed silk screen on mirror with flat monochrome black ink. Starting Price: £800

Lot 16. Peter Clossick Transcription of Bellini’s Madonna of the Meadows. 2005. Charcoal. 70 x 88cm. Framed.
Kindly donated by the artist.
Peter Clossick’s beautiful transcription of Bellini’s 16th Century work Madonna of the Meadow which hangs in the National Gallery was kindly donated by the artist inspired by the subject’s links to that of the P.A.C Charity. Clossick’s works are mainly in charcoal and oil in which he uses the medium to explore the process of expression that takes place during the execution of the work. He believes that art should be neither about the preparatory or the finished article.
“ To me drawing is an attitude rather than a fixed tool, drawing as line describing space and geometry rather than edge – a process of being searched out, rather than toward finished delineation, discovering meaning through the subject, a dialogue, as the event of description rather than the description itself.” Peter attended Goldsmiths College, London. He is a member of the New England Art Club and is also part of the London Group. He has exhibited in London including the Royal Academy Summer show, The Mall Galleries and also on Cork Street. He has also exhibited extensively abroad. Starting Price: £1,200

Lot 19. James Holdsworth Theres No Place Like Home, 2011. Mixed media on canvas. 122 x 122cm. Framed.
Kindly donated by the artist and Stephanie Hoppen Gallery.
In the large multi-layered canvas ‘Theres No Place Like Home’ Holdsworth subverts popular culture. This take on our preconceived notions of contemporary culture with twinges of humour really give his works a shock factor that makes his work so interesting. Having recently exhibited at Stephanie Hoppen Gallery London and also Los Angeles, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris, Holdsworth is gaining a international reputation. “In this new collection, Holdsworth addresses the issues of a gritty urban reality exposed beneath the glitz, exposing the disparate relationship between modern society and its icons. The adored modern heroes are distorted and dripping, confronted and cuddled by cartoon-like figures. Each unique piece is a heady combination of texture and shine. Faces of the famous and the infamous gaze out from the collaged backgrounds of the canvas obstructed only by swathes of paint, varnish and glitter.” Stephanie Hoppen Gallery Starting Price: £2,000

Kindly donated by the artist.
This is an interesting sculptural installation from a series called Thoughts (Butterfly) by Barnaby Hosking who acquired an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art London in 2003. Hosking is interested in the visceral aspect of sculpture and in this series attempts to draw the viewer into thinking about the physical substance as well as that which is conceptual. Hosking believes this is encourages an “Integral” understanding of the work where process, object and viewer are interdependent. Roy Mordechay’s works expresses a continuous dynamic between the studio and real life and the sociopolitical implications. It is the synthesis of autobiographical, local and universal interconnections. His work has fused various artistic mediums - painting, drawing, installation, performance and interactive actions and deal with the tension between alienation and the ideals of success; competition and struggle in an everfast-forward contemporary culture, where ones private reality, sensitivities and dreams do not necessarily correspond with the order of things and thus remains in perpetual conflict. Roy was born in Haifa and now lives and works in Tel-Aviv. He is represented by Felix Ringel Gallery in Dusseldorf. Starting Price: £750. 48

CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS FOR THE IMPACT GALA DINNER AND AUCTION TO BE HELD ON 7 NOVEMBER AT THE SAVOY The property offered in this sale and listed in this catalogue will be sold by PAC, registered with the Charity Commissioners under number 294998. Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to Sophie Macpherson and not to Sotheby’s, which serves merely as auctioneer for PAC in conducting the sale and participates on the following terms and conditions which govern the sale of all the property offered (as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the auction): 1. (a) Neither Sotheby’s nor PAC assumes any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity or the authorship of any property identified in this catalogue (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified herein). (b) All property is sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description and neither Sotheby’s nor PAC makes any representations or warranties of any kind or nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the property and in no event shall either of them be responsible for the correctness of any descriptions of property, nor be deemed to have made, any representations or warranties of physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance of the property. No statement in the auction catalogue or other description made at the sale, in any sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty. (c) Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored. (d) Property may be offered subject to reserves. 2.
Any property may be withdrawn by Sotheby’s or PAC at any time before the actual sale.
3. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue. 4. Sotheby’s and PAC reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the sale records of PAC shall be conclusive in all respects.

5. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the property, he may reject the same and withdraw the property from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance. 6. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof, (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price or such part as PAC may require. PAC will not release a lot to a successful buyer until payment of the total amount due has been made. After payment, the purchaser shall remove the Property from PAC’s premises (if held at PAC). If the property is not so removed, it may be sent by PAC at its discretion to storage for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such charges will then be added to the purchase price of the property. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to PAC by law including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, PAC at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any shortfall between the original sale price and the price achieved upon resale, all other charges due hereunder and any incidental damages. 7. Payments for purchases must be made in Sterling and in the following forms; cash, cheque (backed by cheque guarantee card) and all major credit cards. 8. In the case of commission bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Sotheby’s and PAC are not responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from mechanical difficulties or failure. 9. In no circumstances will Sotheby’s or PAC rescind any purchase made or refund the amount paid in respect of any lot. Neither shipping nor delivery costs are included in the price at which a lot is knocked down by the auctioneer to the buyer. 11. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s, PAC’s and Sotheby’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.
