Agenda
To clearly identify and summarize the goals of the initiative. Review the contributions that can be made from each resource identified, as it relates to the youth (ages 12-15) of this particular community. Also map out a list of action items as well as formulate a timeline for completion.
Discussion/Decisions Made
Lively round-table discussions took place as Melissa kicked-off the meeting by introducing T.I.T.H.E.S. to those who might not have been quite familiar with the initiative.
Introductions took place and each attendee gave a high-level synopsis of what resource to the initiative may be able to contribute
Omar Ford (HCYS) indicates that he is willing to work in partnership with CSS by loading his extensive software onto the PCs already located at CSS’s computer lab
Cynthia Delouise is interested in increasing the computer equipment already located at CSS and their partner service, HCYS
Ian Rochester(SNET) weighed the various options for equipment needed to better serve the youth at CSS. CSS is eligible to receive donated computer equipment from SNET because it is classified as a 501c-3(non-profit) status.
Sherylyn Garner will write a request letter to SNET and various other software and computer companies such as MicroSoft, Dell, Compaq, etc. in order to begin the donation process
Omar Ford (HCYS) ran down the list of activities they are currently planning with the youth actively participating with NFTE (National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship). He indicated that there are some youth from CSS that have already signed up for a trip they will be going on to the business district in New York. The team indicated the need to have even more CSS youth involved with NFTE at HCYS.
Cynthia Delouise asked that any announcements concerning information to be seen by the youth at CSS be placed in the Community Builders Newsletter (a publication written for the CSS residents) be submitted by November 28th.
Cynthia indicated that a lot of parents are already participating in the Workforce Development program already in place at CSS. We should be able to elicit their assistance in getting the word out to their children.
In the past, the newsletters were left at the office of CSS. A suggestion was made that the newsletters be handed out to the residents as an even more effective way to get the word out.
Cynthia indicated that at a recent Harvest party that CSS gave during Halloween, 125 children showed up for food and games. Cynthia would like to see that same number or more participating in the after school initiative we’re attempting to build.
Cynthia had also contacted Cubscouts for their participation in the after-school program. They will be drafting flyers to give out to the residents and they are hoping to have the cub-scouts onsite every Tuesday afternoon.
Robert Hudson (YMCA) is still looking to gain permission from his supervisor to allow a staff person on site at CSS 1 or 2 days p/wk for an Arts and Crafts program.
Robert agreed to also work with the youth at CSS in establishing a youth council that would become self-sufficient in providing council to the after-school project
Olivia Davis (Empower New Haven) would like for this youth council, once established, to act as youth editor to the Hill Newsletter (a publication written for both the North and South Hill districts)
Melissa recorded the tentative dates and activities to be included in the calendar for January.
