STAR APPEAL Chanel is not just known the world over for its fashion but also for its jewellery, in particular the 1932 collection that will go on display at a special exhibition

EDITOR/REGIONAL MANAGING DIRECTOR Tan Boon Kean (bktan@bizedge.com)

The ever-romantic Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel first presented her exquisite jewellery collection in 1932 and called it The Constellation. She used plenty of stars, especially the shooting star, as she felt it represented hope for all during the time of the Great Depression. Chanel’s necklaces were made without clasps, and had stones fashioned into stars that dash across the night sky, leaving a sparkling trail behind. Brooches, pendants, bracelets and rings are set on fire with carefully placed diamonds. Can’t picture it? Not to worry, as a one-of-a-kind exhibition titled Bijoux de Diamants will feature these striking pieces. More than 70 items will go on display from Sept 12 to Oct 12 at the Chanel Watch & Fine Jewellery Boutique at 01-04 Takashimaya Shopping Centre. Daily from 10.30am to 8.30pm.

The Skeleton Patrimony Traditionelle by Vacheron Constantin has been hailed as a great work of art due to its amazing technical challenge of fitting all mechanical demands into one watch. The 38mm 18K whitegold case with a transparent dial houses the automatic 1120 SQ calibre movement; the 30mm version has the manual winding 1003 SQ calibre. Both versions also come with or without diamonds. Price starts from $66,300. Available at authorised retailers.

The most avant-garde in the Raymond Weil stable of timepieces is surely the fully mechanical Don Giovanni Così Grande watch. The rectangular case in polished steel shows the “jumping hour” display, which has the hour hand replaced by the window at 12 o’clock. The overlapping smaller display shows the minutes and seconds. View this remarkable timepiece at authorised retailers.
