Cultural History - Patients Redemptorists The St. Joseph Church was built as a monastery church for the Patriarchal Redemptorists. The Patriarchs Redemptorists, founded in 1732 by Saint Alfonsus-Maria de Liguori and since 1832 based in The Netherlands. They mainly engaged in their public missions, in which the worship of Mary played a major role. The return of the Maria statue, or the Sweet Mother in 1853, caused the Patriarchal Redemptorists, in addition to Wittem in 1836 and Amsterdam in 1850, to settle definitively in s-Hertogenbosch and want a bigger accommodation. Six years later in December 1859, the Redemptorist church was taken into neo-Gothic style. In general, the St. Joseph church was also called the Patriarchs Church, where everyone was always welcome. Second New Street was at the end of 1890 St. Joseph Street The St. Joseph Church was built at the Second Nieuwstraat. From 1890 the street name in St. Joseph Street changed. St. Joseph Church Even though the exterior of the former St. Joseph church may seem somber to some people, the interior is very special and atmospheric. The ?? Crucifixion ?? with three-sided chorus was built to a design by the architect Van Veggel. The vaults in the neo-Gothic St. Joseph church were made by C. Vrensen to a design by L.C. Hezemans and restored by Th. Hermsen. The remaining paintings are manufactured by Th. Hermsen and A. van Bokhoven. Not to mention are the beautiful wooden communes and the pulpit with its many statues. These were under the responsibility of the Bossche sculptor Hendrik van der Geld (18381914). He was a student at the Royal School. In memory For no centuries, the Patriarchal Redemptors have been able to use this beautiful building. In the summer you will see the back of the Orangerie Den Bosch through the green trees.
